Very cool man!!! Keep up the awesome work you do.
Nice blast from the past!
@@espeemike3698 wow, my first layout - that’s really old! Lol. Makes you see how far you’ve come along in the hobby though.
Glad to hear you are gaining real-estate but sad to hear about tearing down this one. It's a tough job and a pain in the butt but remember, bigger and better things are coming. Congratulations on your new home and railroad buddy !! 🎉🎉❤
@@williamarseneau1575 thanks Bill, so far this one is coming apart as planned. I built in sections because I knew I would be moving at some point. Hoping to get it set up at the next place as only one level if possible and some additional sections built in to make it work (and longer). 😁 Thanks again! - Steve
That much room ya gotta go HO, lol. Can't wait to see the new layout buddy.
@@garykcs5532 very tempting, still on the fence about staying N scale or switching to HO. I guess once we finally get settled in, I can look at options and possibilities down there. I’ll keep you guys posted. - Steve
Wow congrats! Best of luck to you with the move!
@@NoFear2473651 thank you. - Steve
Hi Steve, Do some hard negotiating to get as much of the basement as possible! lol! The Phoenix will rise again! Good luck with your move, and take care buddy.......Mike
@@espeemike3698 Hi Mike, that’s the plan. I know we have some “other” uses planned for some of the basement but I’m trying to get as much as possible. Anything is better than the garage in the long run. Who knows, if I get enough space it may force my hand to switch to HO. Thanks and take care. - Steve
Wow....New House with a Big Basement....Sounds like a Model Railroader dream. Hope no problems moving the Layout and good luck in the new home. We be a watching!! Bob
@@Longshadowsmodeltrees thanks Bob, I guess if it doesn’t go as planned with the layout move I can always start over! 😁 Thanks - Steve
Congrats on moving on up…sounds like you’re proposing an even grander layout….
@@georgiasunbelt thanks Anthony. I’ve considered upgrading to HO if it’s possible but still on the fence. Need to get settled in and really evaluate the space and possibilities. Thanks and take care. - Steve
Good luck on the new location. Hint-finish the the wall and ceiling of the basement first.
@@ronjenkins549 that’s the plan hopefully, thanks! - Steve
Good job buddy, looks really good. You and I have talked over the years about doing helixes and problems that exist with that. At least you came up with a plan and it looks good.
@@garykcs5532 thanks Gary, yeah I don’t like helixes and will never do another. At least it works for now. - Steve
Thats the worlds longest train right there
I know right! 😂
Looks nice Steve, you wouldn't know they were there, if you didn't tell us. Bob
Thanks Bob, appreciate the feedback. - Steve
Hi Steve, Feel lucky to have two weekend posts back to back! Good solution for the access to the top tracks. For even more access, cut the fascia back inside the helix to 1.5"-2.5". Paint the new narrow fascia and remaining levels and blocks black. Just my two cents worth :) Take care my friend......Mike
Hi Mike, thanks for the feedback and yes two weekends in a row is a first for me probably! I was actually thinking about doing that with the fascia too. Eventually it will have black curtains hanging from it so it shouldn’t matter how long or short it. I’ve actually been able to unscrew the hardware keeping those inner helix fascia pieces in and remove it as needed. I had zero incidents on the helix until I put in the fascia. 😂 Thanks again for the feedback! - Steve
Looking good, be cool to see a video of your Digitrax setup integrated with JMRI
Thanks for the feedback, I’ll definitely do some videos of the systems once interfaced with JMRI. I’ve never used it before so it will all be uncharted territory for me though and probably slow-going. Thanks again. - Steve
For your electronics / DCC drawer I would you use a computer case fan. Amazon sells them for about $10 to $15 dollars and they have USB or DC models 3 to 12 volts. They have 2 different types. Great layout thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the feedback and recommendations. I was thinking about adding a fan but a computer fan is perfect since I can just power it from the computer power supply. - Steve
Blew my mind when you pulled out the electronics drawer. It is arranged nice and neat and the drawer pulled out smoothly. If I was worried about heat I would put a small muffin fan in the back of the drawer to pull the air out the back.
Thanks for the feedback, the drawer was a fun project to do. I was thinking about adding a small fan too if I did put the PR3 in the drawer. - Steve
Good job buddy everything's looking good too bad you were out of service so long but you can get right back into it. Can't wait to see the rest of the scenery. Get that Helix problem fixed, lol. And highball
Thanks for the feedback buddy, I’m making a video on how I make the access panels. Yep, definitely good to be feeling better and able to work on it without pain or a cane! I’ve got to watch your video too, just didn’t have time today. - Steve
I really like the backdrop I think it came out good. You should do more.
Thanks Adam, that’s the plan. Going to do the backdrop on the BNSF side of Devore and then start working some others on upper level and also the yard backdrops. Appreciate the feedback. - Steve
Great job! The scenery looks excellent! I love the yard design that you have.
Thanks Michael, appreciate the feedback. I need to get to finishing the yard. Have some buildings and service tracks to add still. Thanks again. - Steve
All looks good Steve, you have some great idea coming. Thanks for the plug on my Trees....You should have a scene of the cop's arresting them taggers. Great update. Bob
Thanks Bob! Anytime, the trees are great. Really enjoy finally being able to put them in too. Appreciate the feedback, Cops arresting taggers - great idea! Thanks again - Steve
Another great update, Steve. It's really coming together. The backdrops are outstanding and do a stellar job of truly making it Cajon. In the words of Freddie Prinze, "Looooking good!"
Thanks Travis, I’m going to do add them for other areas without backdrops too. They definitely make the scene pop compared to other areas without them. Appreciate the feedback as always. - Steve
Cool video
Thank you! - Steve
Good morning Steve, Sorry to hear about your back troubles, and glad to hear that you are healing! The layout is coming along nicely. Back drop screams SoCal with the haze. Thanks for the idea of using Google Earth to catch scenes. Take care my friend........Mike
Awesome Mike, thanks! Back is 100% better and looking to pick up steam on other layout projects. That’s the look and feedback I was hoping for. Should I add more trees, or keep it sparse like it is? Just to clarify, I used google maps, not earth. I might have to go back and see what I said in the video now. If you have questions, give me a shout. Thanks again and take care. - Steve
I personally think no graffiti, but thats me, i love hiw your layout looks, I'm glad your healing as well. Keep kicking ass as bst you can
Thanks for the feedback, I honestly don’t like graffiti and don’t support it… but to get that realistic look of modern day SoCal, it’s everywhere unfortunately. Feeling much better so hopefully I can get some more projects knocked out. - Steve
@@CajonSub Use modelers license and create a world where graffiti does not exist. I can't stand it as well.
@@troy.peters yep, it’s out of control.
Nice update, Steve. I’m glad you’re doing well now. The layout is beautiful. Great backdrops. Very nice runby. Beautiful consist. 🚂😎👍🏼
Thanks Drew, appreciate the feedback on everything. Take care - Steve
I feel that a slightly blurred background gives the feeling of distant horizons. A sharp focus backscene looks too unreal.
Thanks! The more I look at it, I agree. I think if it’s too focused many will focus more on the background rather the scene. - Steve
Ya a nice marine layer look to the backdrop 😂 seriously looks good
Thank you, I like the look of it too… “the marine layer” that never goes away. - Steve
Things look great Steve, you have a bit of graffiti work to do if you are going to make it realistic. Seriously though looks awesome
Thanks John, I know right…. It’s not nearly enough sadly. I lived in SoCal for 25 years too - I should know better. 😁 Thanks for the feedback. - Steve
I really like the idea of using a bridge to disguise the entrance to the helix - but in your case taking it to the next level with the multi lane highway bridges adds part of that sense of "big power" that a smaller bridge just can't do. In the sense of "big bridge and lots of cars dwarfs a lot of things yet the train still exudes size and power." I'm definitely looking forward to the finished scene
Thanks for the feedback, it’s slowly getting there and I need to get out another update. - Steve
Happy New year. Dude ya gotta get some dups going on your trains. Cajon pass is duo country, especially on that loaded coal train. 2x2. Get on it ..Gary
Yep, I’ll have to try again. They didn’t like the helix last time. Lol - Steve
I have question ? I'am looking for windows n scale , I'am making 5 different grain buildings on my layout w/silos..
I haven’t had to make any buildings that didn’t already come with windows but for scratch building, if you’re looking for the clear part to make glass - I’ve heard some use clear plastic for windows. If it’s the window frames, think fine N scale or another brand make them. - Steve
Great scenery work and love the consists! Sound is awesome too on those NS units. I model HO and have been curious about N, are the intermittent cuts in power/sound a layout issue or just the nature of imperfections with N scale?
Thank you, appreciate the comments. I actually need to clean the track, haven’t run trains in a bit prior to making the video. - Steve
Awesome video. Happy New Year

Good morning Steve, Nice surprise to railfan your layout this New Year's Eve morning! You have nailed the Cajon track ballast color mix! Looks great. Hope that you and the family have a great day and coming New Year! All the best.....Mike
Thanks Mike, appreciate the feedback. Happy New Year to you and your family too, cheers to more videos coming in 2024! - Steve
This layout is fantastic. The desert scenic is quite realistic. I am impressed. It would be useful if you share with us how you overcame any problems? Will you be weathering the track and ballast to blend it in with the surrounding scenery?
Thank you for the feedback, I do plan on weathering once I get the basic scenery in. Haven't had too many problems along the way but I think as I have, I've posted in the other videos or asked for suggestions etc. Maybe at some point I can do a video of lessons learned or things I would do different. - Steve
the yard looks great. looks very prototype.
Thank you, I still have a few tracks to put in and some facilities on the right side of it. It's slowly getting there! - Steve
Coming along nicely. Just an idea have you tried to do a light black wash on some of the rock here & there? May add more look.
Hi Terry, thank you. I have not tried a wash but should. Great idea and appreciate it, most painting and brush/ground cover/rocks I do in small batches and move around so the colors aren’t the same in one place. What do you recommend for the wash? I’ve heard of using India ink and also diluted black. - Steve
Hello Steve, Looking good. HWY / Interstate bridges have precasted concrete I-Beams ,set inplace then plywood forms on bottom side with shoring to help hold up & in place plywood so concrete road deck can be poured. Also some places they still use precasted I-Beams then have a deck/ floor poured to help hold the two I-Beams in place. Transported to site & set inplace, then poure the actual road surface on top of the deck. Those places on both end of bridge is a bridge inbutment/ under bridge its called a Retainer wall. Its details like this make a layout look good.Good job.
Hi Terry, thanks for the feedback. This was the first of three short videos in the series. I changed it a bit by the time I got to the third video. Also think I released a update since then so hopefully I captured it a bit better. Appreciate the inputs as always. - Steve
