"The Night Before Christmas, Deep Under the Sea" by Kathie Kelleher Day 7 of 12 Days of Christmas
Hi
I have a pet woolly worm right now
I live in a highly forested neighborhood in Hope Mills, NC. I’ve seen these moths several times times in the 12+ years I’ve lived here. But yesterday was a first… I was painting my front porch… sat down to take a break, a friend called, we spoke for a while, and I happened to look down. Half on my shoe, half on my pant leg, was one of the biggest, brightest green caterpillars I have ever seen. And it was trying to eat my jeans. Or just hold on with its jaws. It had a death grip on them. I have never seen one like this, and I know if its highly visible, do not touch, is the basic rule. On close inspection there were tiny little tufts or spikes at regular intervals around its body. It seemed highly agressive as I got out my pocket knife to move it off my ankle to a better spot to view it. It was very bright green. Almost glowing. But the most fascinating feature of all, that my camera phone could not pick up, was little dots, that looked like tiny LEDs at the end of its stripes coming around its big fat body. I say LEDs because these things looked electronic. Obviously it was the setting sun playing tricks on my eye, but I swear it was bioluminescence. It took a few pictures, and placed it back in the closest plant. Just its head was the size of a pistachio.
Being from the south I always thought my grandpa calling them June bugs was just a ole nickname, lmao I guess the old man was right ❤️
I tried to rescue one today and he bit my pinky :(😢
I love their furry antennae
Ok, I have thousands in my orchard...first time seeing them. What do we do?
My brother in law gave me a mature 5 yr old concord vine . It’s July and it pretty large with grapes all over it. I had to get it out of there now. My question is can I get away with not pruning it back if I took the time to dig up the entire root system (which I did). I don’t know a whole lot about growing grapes yet . I really don’t want to cut it down to next to nothing if I don’t have to but I also don’t want to kill it. I have the whole thing in my back yard now soaking the roots in my yard pond for the night. Gonna bury the roots in the morning. Let me know your thoughts on what I should do please. Also I case it matters I am in Ohio. It’s summer so doubt that matters lol
Thanks for the bug plug me and the wife thoroughly enjoyed it!!
That was a really helpful demonstration! Thank you.
Can you eat them?
THEY LOVE FIGS
Mr. Brown buzzes like a bumblebee and tweets like birds up in a tree. Mr. Brown croaks like a frog and snores like turtles on a log. He hisses like a rattlesnake and chomps like zebras eating cake. He makes a sound of kissing fish or elephants eating from a dish. Mr. Brown sounds like a car or nursery rhymes played on a guitar. He sizzles like eggs in a pan and goes vroom vroom just like a van. Mr. Brown quacks like a duck and goes like music from an ice cream truck.
I've always thought of June Beatles as one of the coolest Beatles out there green metallic belly and a green bronce suede surface on it's back; definitely cool 😎
Informative, thanks! Might do something about that echo-y audio, though. Put up some sound-absorbing curtains or something?
But WHAT IS THEIR PURPOSE. Like why do they exist. Like does it live to be food for frogs and birds n other insects. They do nothing for the environment and there’s thousands of them.
There is not a magical being that put them there so there really isn't a "purpose" in that sense. A lot of animals are passive influences on ecosystems but their disappearance likely would lead to a lot of hungry animals. Animals live to mate and pass on their genetics, not to be food for frogs and birds and stuff, that is the only "purpose" of any animal.
@@brooke6838 i like that explanation. I get where you’re coming from
You couldn't survive without them
What is your "purpose"?
What is my purpose😔
i miss when i went here so much fun
One flew pass me today, I thought it was a bird! Then I got up close, took pictures, it clearly was a Luna Moth, very beautiful, first time seeing it, I'm in Quebec Canada.
Luna moths are beautiful to watch
I saw two of them the other day, I picked up one and then another one started hovering around my hand that had the other one on it, maybe it smelled the other one
Amazing! Thank you for sharing that wisdom! God bless you!
I’d love to get head from u 😍🥴🤤
I use to catch them an keep them as pets as a kid in California. Would get a string or floss and make a leash for them 😂
I’ll say this u have more heart me when I was in middle school one was in my face in front of friends I took of my backpack and start swinging 😂 traumatized back then I still don’t like em
😂😂😂😂😂
you are fearless
Tennessee here, we did the string thing too with June bugs. What’s so bad is we let them fly away with the string attached. I’m sorry we did this now but as a child, we weren’t taught any better.
Sigh. I don’t think I’ll ever find info on box elder bugs that doesn’t involve killing them. I like them and just wanna learn.
same
Especially since they are harmless I let them call all over me, they are pretty cute at time
Right?! I thought a university would have actual information. Had a similar problem with carpenter bees.
Fr!
I really dislike bugs, but these little guys are so docile and adorable. They even stop in their tracks when I screech if I see one on the floor ! So, when it’s nicer outside , I just use a Dixie cup and put them in there, and relocate them to my maple tree . It’s blizzarding out right now, so I’m hoping they keep to themselves . I picked up a lame box elder off the carpet to relocate it to a windowsill yesterday , but it’s … not doing well . I thought it would die overnight, but it’s little legs keep going . I want it to die a happy death , so I’ve put it in a cardboard box I reserved last year for helping out injured butterflies - it’s got sticks and dried hydrangeas in there. I cut a tiny square off a sponge , put it in a little container with water and maple syrup, and put my lame boxelder on the sponge . I figure they probably like the same things that butterflies do, since they like sweet fruit. And I hope my tiny patient dies happily before any of its friends get a clue about the situation ;)
There is one that has been harassing me everytime I go to my sister's house. I was hoping to find out why. And it's o ly just me that it chases.... do I smell like rotting fruit?
Dumbest video ever.
I had one now at my home
They are here in Sacramento ca
NO ,..they do not sting nor bite,..but sound real scary
My main question is, when do they just go away? Lol jk. Thank you for the video. I grew up terrified as a kid. And till this day, still terrified lol but I respect them. Before I die, I hope I have the courage to hold one in my hand.
I’m in poinciana Florida and I see one green June beetle 🪲 I saved him from drowning in the pool and I put him back into the yard
ill bet your the life of the party aren't you lol
How do you control these beetles in a non-pesticide way? I don't think they will go in Japanese beetle traps, and we have a zillion of these bugs eating up our farm. Thanks.
THEM LITTLE GUYS ARE LOTS OF FUN WHEN I WAS A KID WE USED TO TIE THEM TO A STRING AND SWING THEM AROUND IN CIRCLES AND WATCH THEM FLY FOR HOURS
Ok so I know they won't hurt me but I can't stand these bugs. There are so many flying around here in east Tennessee I can't even walk outside without freaking out.
i find a tennis racket is fun with these little guys 😁🐰
My lab pit mix used to chase after them and it was funny to watch, he would get frustrated
There's one that has been visiting me everyday after work. It just flies around me. Today it landed on me and hung out with me on my hands for a good 20 minutes. Awesome experience.
When you get a chance grab him tie a string around his upper area and swing him around in a circle and watch him fly like a motorized plane
@@bulldogface8259 I've done that as a kid, but this is a female so I'm sure it has kids somewhere nearby. As a matter of fact it just flew around me 2 minutes ago. :)
You must’ve been enjoying some herbs 🌿 to have hung out with him for 20 minutes!
@@johnathancucumbermelon Darn right! I live in the middle of nowhere. :(
I want to grow the courage to hold one lol
Seriously? Hot water? Ever hear of ... never mind. I was hoping to find someone who would tell me something good about the box elder bug, besides the fact they dont eat your house. Please. The web of life,,, where do they provide an important link or necessary function??
currently they are an endless buffet for my pet toad
@@davedunks4647 Thanks for the response Dave. One of my favorite creatures as a kid, were toads and frogs. Here on my 2 acres which is surrounded by cornfield, I managed to attract a lot of wildlife including toads. The past several years they were popping up out of the grass everywhere. This year not so much. Hence the box elder bugs are extremely plentiful. I have to wonder what they're spraying out here or who is eating the toads? Could it be the chipmunks? 👀😳
@@lukebieniek9069 I was lucky enough that where I grew up I was able to witness several natural cycles like that. One year we'd have a lot of rabbit in the area, the next year we'd have a family of red fox move in and suddenly no rabbits. The fox's would move on, then the rabbits come back and it would repeat. I imagine some birds probably also eat the box elder bugs. As for the toads - I'm not sure but I'd guess they have to be on the look out for hawks, snakes, fox, coyote, wild dog and barn cats, possibly musk rat, raccoon, possum? Toads have small poison glands that can irritate small mammals but overall they don't have much in the way of defense
Wondering the same, Luke
I just think they’re neat.
Thank you for the info. I will go out in my yard again!!!😄👍😊
Can’t wait for my daughter to go and have fun at rock eagle!
I’m going to rock eagle tomorrow
I love your intro
had a field trip here in 1999
