2 Amtrak Capitol Corridor Trains + San Joaquin 718 in Emeryville, CA (January 12th, 2025)
Amtrak Capitol Corridor services 741 and 734 along with San Joaquin train 718 are each found here departing from Emeryville station on Sunday, January 12th, 2025 during a nice afternoon and evening in the East Bay. These were a few out of other trains I shot this day as part of my first train session of 2025. 734 happened to be accompanied by two SC-44 Charger locomotives with one on both ends which I was impressed to see. After 718 left some hooligan also trespassed onto the track.

    ERROR(S): 1:33:00 This was meant to say "UP 8075 West" as the engines for this powermove went back west to the Roseville UP yard. 1:54:52 There were 3 engines for this powermove, because the GP22-T4 from earlier on that one had been detached.

      Thanks man! My father and I usually use an FJ Cruiser for our journeys especially for those with areas that are off-road. The climb is more difficult if you want to go along Hill 582.

      Thanks Larry! The EMD F40PH's (900 to 919) are the ones retired, but 920 to 922 are a bit different and have been rebuilt by MPI in Boise, Idaho and will continue to run on early morning and evening commute services to/from Gilroy on weekdays alongside the MP36PH's for a while more. And yes, it would be wonderful to see a mix of new rolling stock on the route. The Alstom Coradia Multilevel coaches that Metra and VRE plan to purchase are a perfect idea since the platform level is perfect for the doors and the floor level inside the coaches. The Bombardier Multilevel (now Alstom Adessia MAX) coaches also sound intriguing but the only component I would want adjusted are the doors - double-doorways with steps that raise up and descend and a wheelchair lift would be useful for those coaches either EMU or push-pull. As for locomotives, the ALP-45DP's on EXO in Montreal could use service over here given that their electric line had shut down and was taken over by a light rail. SC-42DM Charger locomotives would also be very reliable but with a pantograph instead of third rail shoes. Amtrak could also transfer some of their ACS-64 locomotives over here when the Airo sets and ALC-42E engines enter service, but the consists will have to be allocated to ensure which locomotives can run on the unelectrified section south of Tamien.

    HOLY CRAP that is a lot of smoke. love it. that spot is definitely on my bucket list now. I want to see that for myself. that really happens on the EMD locos a lot. can't wait for when its warm enough to go out. awesome video. in not a big engine guy but i do know this. that happens because the train is already working hard up the grade out of Tehachapi, so it is using a lot of air. when it goes through the tunnel where oxygen is limited because the exhaust fumes are in the tunnel it causes plumes of mostly unburnt diesel fuel to come out the exhaust. so the combustion fuel ratios are outta wack for a second

    Goofs: The information on the locomotive for Caltrain Local 236 is incorrect - 921 is an MPI Rebuilt F40PH-2C, not an EMD F40PH-2CAT.

      Thanks Larry! Yeah, we still have some F59PHI's running around on the Capitol Corridor + San Joaquins. I think someone said something about them getting a rebuilt of some sort, it could likely be something to do with EPA Tier 4 standards. It would be nice though to have some other type of Tier 4 passenger locomotive to go with the Chargers when AmCal is not ready to use them anymore, but they do need new doubledecker coaches soon which would also be useful for more trains.

      @@railtechadventurer Agreed with your statement. Here in Southern California we have the Tier 4 F125 Spirit made by EMD / Progress Rail. Metrolink uses them. I haven't looked into their reliability. We have a lot of them and they and they are quieter and more fuel efficient.

      @@Balerio2357Hopefully something can be done when Metrolink is ready to replace their MP36 engines. It would be nice to see them converted into a Tier 4 MPXpress variant for use on the Capitol Corridor, San Joaquin and Pacific Surfliner (maybe the new proposed train between San Jose and San Luis Obispo?) to help with more train frequency on those services. Caltrain and MARC should definitely join in on this idea, but the locomotive would have to be lower than 5,400 horsepower. Self-propelled DMU's (or DEMU's) being Tier 4's would also be useful as well on Amtrak again.

      @@Balerio2357 Alstom would be the perfect choice for new doubledeckers on Amtrak California and Midwest though after Nippon Sharyo's crash test for their designed coaches failed. For instance they could make something Americanized the Coradia series, where the Cabcars are also designed with the flat cab exterior for passengers to walk between coaches in the middle of the train. My ideas were one design of coaches to be called the Coradia S1 and the other being the Coradia S2, both having double doorways on both sides. My ideas for the MPI converted locomotive suggestion I had would have them use the numbers 2600-2609 and 2650-2659 for the Surfliner, and 2675-2699 for the Capitol Corridor and San Joaquins. Something like MT44AC, or MT44PHAC. The only component that would need adjustments though is the window seeing as 4 windows with 4 windshield wipers would be a little bit difficult for good forward visbility. 25 for both of them because MBTA and West Coast Express using theirs would also be useful to send in to WABTEC for that upgrade than just those from Caltrain, MARC and Metrolink.

      It's today, although the MPI Rebuilt F40PH-2C (920-922) and MP36PH-3C locomotives (923-928) will continue to haul Bombardier coaches for service to Gilroy on weekdays. All EMD F40PH's (900-919) and Gallery Coaches will fully be replaced today, although Caltrain has retired some until today.

    Great video! Sad to hear that F40s are in their final months of regular service! The good thing is the MP36PH-3C and the Bombardier cars will remain in place, but in order to see them, we'd have to travel all the way to Gilroy until CAHSR takes over in the 2030s or something like that.

      The K5LA's on Coaster's Cabcars are loud indeed, but I think the audio on that file was too loud when I tried to look at the settings after a problem with another file for a train I shot on the way. I did do my best to try to make it not as loud while editing.
