How does it feel compared to Xreas? Would you buy the same again?
I’d do it again, for sure! Check out our update video: 4Runner XREAS Delete Update! Bilsteins vs Stock Long-Term ruclips.net/user/shorts1J1TdIEWpdA?feature=share
Great review friend. Very measured approach to this topic
Thanks for watching, and especially for the kind comment!
Glad to see this-I’ve been recommending these for a while. The design/engineering decisions from Toyota lately have many of us scratching our heads. Gone are the days where ‘Toyota’ = a vehicle that your kids would get one day because of longevity & reliability. Now, they try to convince people that 0W-08, 0W-16, or even 0W-20 (in a heavy 4WD SUV) + 10,000 mile oci’s are somehow good ideas.
Thanks for watching and for the kind comment!
I never fill my oil filters since the 1970 and I never broke an engine for it, as long as you do not rev the engine at 6,000 rpm. . On first start. .
Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m on the overly cautious, I like to fill it up!
@@fixityfix The other thing, on my Rogue, the filter is mounted horizontally 😕
On my friend's 2013 Corolla, the oil filter is mounted horizontally and the big socket to remove the plastic Cap cannot be installed because of the oil pan closeness. .
Nice video! I replaced the aging halogens in my 2019 4R with LEDs from Lastfit LED. I used their "Pro-DC" model with a new fan housing in the dust cover and correct installation angle. I thought it was a huge improvement over the stock halogens. I used the upgraded halogens in my 2015 Tundra- they were bright, but didn't last very long even with precautions to not touch the bulb. Even though they're expensive, the LEDs are going to be my "go-to" for everything now.
Thanks for watching! Thanks for the info on the halogen longevity makes me glad to have gone the LED route. How do the Lastfits do illuminating at a distance from the driver's perspective?
@ very good. The high beams project a long way without dark spots or voids. Side to side coverage is excellent.
Does it change the oil capacity using the Baxter adapter and spin on filter?
Thanks for watching! I used the same 6.6 quarts with filter change I always do, and it was in the right place on the dipstick.
is there a link for the 5mm allen wrench?
Here is a link to the set I’d buy these days: amzn.to/3VIuv08 Thanks for watching!
@@fixityfix Thank you! what oil filter wrench would you suggest? that one is not available any longer.

I’ve been looking for someone who talks about these engines for ages I’ve been rebuilding a 1988 ford ranger and it is a pain to find videos about them lol
I’m glad you found our channel! I had the same dilemma a few years back, which is a large part of why we started up our modest little channel. The 2.9 is such a cool, torquey, versatile engine. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Very cool project! I have a 1983 944 and a 1987 924s(same drivetrain as a Early 944). I was researching EV swaps and found your channel! Very excited to see how you are going to mount the motor and seeing the rest of the swaps progress. Can't wait for the next video!
Thanks for watching and for the kind, encouraging comment!
You cannot use the factory skid plate with Baxter adapter . It is sitting down lower so you have to buy new skid plate. 💰💰💰
Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, the aftermarket skid plates are big $! The RCI skid I got a long time ago has been one of my favorite mods, especially in making maintenance quicker and easier. The Baxter instructions indicate the stock skid plate can be modified, but I have never tried it. Check out the 3:40 mark in this video.
I used a nylon frying pan scraper to separate the pan. Warning! Make sure your partner knows you took it and ruined it!
LOL! Thanks for watching. And I’m totally gonna try that next time.
I’m thinking about doing this myself, I’m looking for the 944 to start with. I’m going to be following along.
Thanks for watching and commenting! I hope you’ll keep me posted on your progress! One suggestion if you haven’t found a 944 yet. Mine is an ‘84, which means it harder to upgrade suspension. 85.5+ years are more desirable since it’s easier to pop in coilovers to accommodate higher battery weights.
@fixityfix I don't know much about EV but I know 944 😊 with a Early car and want to do a coilover swap you can use 1986-88 924s aluminum trailing arms or would be easier to get the whole rear assembly (rear arms, brakes, metal brake line, hubs, pivot arm and the longer axles). I have coilovers on my 924s and will be converting my 1983 944 with the same setup someday.
Update from Sarah - the game is called PERFECTION (not Concentration)
A close up repair video of the old panel could be a cool video topic! Could compare time spent repairing the to cost of new one
Now THAT is and excellent idea!
I just wanted to know, do you use the Tesla toolbox software to make this stuff work? Or you don’t need that after removing it from the car?
Thanks for watching! I don’t use the Tesla toolbox. I am probably going to use the T2C for this one: www.ev-controls.com/product/ev-controls-t2c/
This is a good video. I don't even own a Toyota.
Your comment makes my day! Thanks for watching!
Exceptional, patient and detail oriented tutorial on the proper way to change oil on my fifth GEN as well. Thank you and kudos!
Thanks for watching and for the kind comment!
What type of fixtures did you use to cap off the hydraulic lines? Thank you your video was excellent.
Thank you for watching and commenting! I didn’t end up capping off the hydraulic lines because I like the new Bilsteins so much, I ended up taking the hydraulic lines out altogether.
Did you give any thought to installing the Baxter remote oil filter adapter? Relocating the oil filter to the top side of the engine bay?
I did! I was tempted, but decided I didn’t want to add any more complexity (hoses/passages) to the oiling system. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@fixityfix having the oil filter up top is something I really miss about my Subaru. I hate taking off the skid plate to change the filter on the 4Runner.
With a Fumoto valve on the engine drain plug and the Baxter adapter installed, oil changes are really fast and not messy anymore. When I was Ubering with my 4Runner I would rack up the miles really fast. No way I was going to a dealer or Jiffy lube.
Thanks for watching! Yes! I love the quick change valves! I have the Stahlbus valve on this 4Runner! amzn.to/3xrsKLE
Any idea how to fix the rest of it?
Thanks for watching! Not this one in specific, but usually it comes down to replacing belts and replacing capacitors.
Good for you !! I see you got a Baxter adapter. Only hand tighten. They won’t leak or back off.
Yes! Spoiler alert…loving it so far.
@ I had to sell my 4Runner but whoever ends up buying it is going to appreciate all the mods I made.
If you add baxter modification to oil filter does it void toyota warranty?@@fixityfix
Are you using SR5 struts?
Thanks for watching! I used these, with the factory Limited springs. They are also compatible with SR5. Front: Bilstein 24- 329064: amzn.to/3wtOlD3 Rear: Bilstein 33-329093: amzn.to/3XILYa6
@ Is there a reason you reused the flanges for the rear shocks? I thought you can use the flanges and bushings that come with the new Bilsteins.
It was long enough ago, I don’t recall. I’ll be curious to know what you decide on yours!
@ Yes, definitely need to replace about 120k miles 2 of the 4 are leaking. I always go for conventional. The limited had the 4wd which is why I wanted it. I am sure it will be good.
@@GreatSax1, sounds like it’s time for sure! We’ve been happy with the Bilsteins. Here is an update video we did in case you haven’t seen it yet: 4Runner XREAS Delete Update! Bilsteins vs Stock Long-Term ruclips.net/user/shorts1J1TdIEWpdA?feature=share
Where did you purchase the hose that goes from the engine block to the air intake box? Trying to find a replacement for that hose and am struggling!
Thanks for watching and commenting! Here is a link to what I used: amzn.to/4evGBjX This was a good question - I will post a new short on it, well...Shortly ;-)
@ appreciate it, I’d love a full breakdown so I know where the map sensor goes as well
@@fixityfixhey, I saw the video you uploaded and was actually interested in the black hose that connects to the top of the engine block to the air intake box!
Ah! Believe it or not, that intake hose is original! I just cleaned it up really well and treated it with Meguiar's Extreme Marine: amzn.to/3YALuCi
Good idea! One of these days I will do a full breakdown of the engine management stuff. In this rig, it has a Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor, running off vacuum. That sneaky part is actually in the firewall right behind the passenger valve cover - it has an electrical and a vacuum connector coming out of it. They go bad pretty frequently! Changing mine out made a big difference as mine had been damaged by water intrusion/condensation.
Baxter Adapter and spin on filter.
What happens if you don't swap the shorter uptake tube with the old longer tube?
Thanks for watching and commenting! My understanding is that leaving the short tube in will cause the filter to be bypassed altogether, leaving the engine with unfiltered oil.
Would you be willing to make one of these for me?
Thanks very much for watching! My shop is pretty backlogged from Hurricane Helene damage. The quickest way to get into an AGM mod is to order a diode/fuse block from these folks: voltageboosterpro.com/product/og/
Im curious if that will be the fix. I too have an 87 ranger with the 2.9 that has idle issues. Thanks.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, the PCV fix did improve the idle issue I was having a lot. My next project, when I get time to work on the Ranger is going to be replacing the capacitors in the ECU.
@@fixityfix cant wait!
I have noticed 4Runner owners are meticulous with there maintenance. Never seen such a clean and careful oil change. Good job. I guess smart people buy smart vehicles.
Thanks for watching, and thank you for the kind comment!
Easy peasy for a master like yourself. Thank you for the hose listening tip!
Thanks for watching, and for the kind comment!
@@fixityfix, absolutely! Never too old to learn from someone with knowledge!
Excuse me if you already mentioned it, how many quarts did you use for the return line clear hose start to show the new fluid?
I used a total of 13 quarts for the whole process, if memory serves. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment!
@@fixityfix thank you
I'm from Philadelphia
I have the same truck I needed to put distributor got loose it came off a time you got to put it back in time😮
I’m having issues with mine running rich I’ve replaced the EGR valve. I’ve done a tuneup and can’t quite figure it out.
It's common for these to run rich - mine does too, even after servicing Fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, Timing, Vacuum Lines/Leaks, Air Filter and Housing, Throttle Position Sensor, Idle Air Control Valve, MAP Sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure), Fuel Pressure Regulator, Coolant Temperature Sensor, Injectors, Intake Air Temperature sensor and Oxygen Sensor. All these things helped a lot, but it is still running rich. I suspect bad capacitors in the Computer. Soon I am going to re-cap the computer, and will do a video when I do (for better or worse). Thanks very much for watching and for your comment!
This video saved me. I’ve done dozens of brake jobs in my life, but replaced a caliper on the wife’s 4runner and COULD NOT get them to bleed. Did not know about the “on” secret with this car. Thanks so much!
My pleasure! I had the same struggle and did lots of research trying to sort it out. That’s when I realized I should make a video on it. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks a bunch for taking the time to make a video.
My pleasure. Thank you for the kind comment and for watching!
Had two Toyotas concurrently, one with a metal housing and the other with plastic. Much preferred the plastic one, the metal one was actually always harder to get off and I never liked it. Funny enough the resistance you're talking about was only an issue with the metal housing for me, the plastic one was much easier to work with. I also stopped using the drain on the housing of both too because I felt it was pointless.
The old oil looks so clear! How often do you change the oil?
Thanks for watching! Manual says every 10k, but I do every 5k for oil and filter every 10k.
Guess what... the plastic housing looks just like my 2008 Toyota Highlander aluminum metal housing, perhaps with out the center tube being taller. I still hate with a passion changing out the oil filter in this style... give me a standard oil filter screw on cartridge any day.
Let me get this straight, the aluminum OEM toyota oil filter cartridge isnt compatible with the 4runner block aluminum, but toyota uses a different (same aluminum as oil housing ) aluminum block in the vehicle that is made for the Al housing??? Why does toyota use different aluminums on their blocks? Why would toyota use an aluminum oil.dilter housing in one block and use a plastic one in another block? Why wouldnt toyota make an oil filter housing made of the same aluminum for the 4runner?
Two hints: 1- replace the plastic housing with metal from Toyota. 2- Remove the whole housing, no need to remove the bottom to drain it... sorry did not see that you already did that...
It’s a nice mod. I did this exact swap out 2 years ago….no problems at all
F.F, You have the RCI skid plate, good job! now get the Baxter Performance Spin on Oil Filter Adapter! the use a Wix 51348XP filter! You need the RCI skid plate so the conversion unit fits! I did it to my 23 TRD off road Prem. Oil change day is a breeze!😇
Thanks for watching and for the info! I will definitely check out the Baxter, once I use the rest of my case of filter elements :-)
Wondering if the aftermarket males a spin on filter?
Thanks for watching and commenting! @bryancooke2445, mentioned this mod below, pricey, but looks like a cool idea: www.baxterperformanceusa.com/shop-by-make/toyota-ts-501-bk-cartridge-to-spin-on-adapter-universal.html
Never had a problem either, one of the reasons I’m still driving a 4th Gen . Celebrating its 20th birthday. Enjoyed the video, have fun with your 4 runner.
Right on!
Love the easy under hood 4th gen filter location. Didn’t know they moved it on 5th gen. Kinda a bummer.
With that skid plate do you still use the plastic guard for the radiator?
I drain my Tundra’s housing each time I change the filter. Metal housing is a mistake, use plastic and torque to spec and never have issues.
Turdota quality has took a nose dive
Not in my world it hasn't. 12 Toyotas over the past 45 years and never a major, or for that matter, a minor issue. But you keep buying whatever you want as everyone has choice in what they purchase.
Yeah good upgrade no doubt. But cmon Toyota, give me a dip stick on the trans. Please, I'm begging you
