5,000 minutes of meditation

Growing up I was quite anxious, my mind runs very fast and I can get easily overwhelmed. In class I would often day dream and found it hard to socialise with others being so stuck in my head. I still have these features but I can now operate better because of meditation. I've become more focused, calm, aware and relaxed. In this video I give 3 of my lessons along the way implementing meditation...

@GovernmentElusion in a way yes. but I think an important note is to not force things and to try and be open and natural that way you find people that connect with you rather than just playing a part and having a ton of more shallow friends. Something I'm getting into is the Wim Hof breathing and cold treatment. For waking up and getting energy going (and a bunch of other stuff), both are said to be pretty amazing in RUclips videos. Even when I feel really lazy and can't be assed getting out of bed, I can still do the breathing one and summon up some energy that way. Once I get that little start, more typically follows: motivation follows action as they say. I guess it's almost like a starter motor in a truck. Without the small starter motor spinning, the big engine is unlikely to start from cold. But once the big motor is going going, it keeps on going. The cold showers and baths are tough and it's hard to see them as a good/positive challenge as I hate the cold so much. I'm trying to harness that hate and turn it on itself ... to spite myself by doing them anyway, to use the anger against itself to get through them. Yet to feel massive benefits from the dopamine/noradrenaline that's said to be released, but getting enough to keep me interested. The whole Win Hof thing may be crap or placebo or something else, but I'm determined to give it a go for the next while as there have been some positives so far. Looking back on how far I have come (whether through journals or wallcharts or just memory) is usually effective in keeping with something when the going gets tough; tough times don't last, tough people do.

@mccannger yeah I've tried wim hof too, definitely has a benefit though for me I found doing what feels best for me rather than forcing someone else's system to fit my life was more beneficial and enjoyable, I still learnt a lot from trying it out and will probably do it every now and again. everything has it's time and season.

@@MalinAtkins The thing I like about it is the breathing. I've tried meditation and felt literally nothing from it, yoga too. His breathing stuff somehow actually feels like I'm fizzing for like the first minute of the breath hold, then after that I feel uber relaxed for another minute of breath hold, then when I breathe again, I keep some of the relaxation. Not for much time, but it's a very welcome thing to have a still mind even for a little time! Hoping there's some accrual from the effect, plus when I add in more of the cold therapy. Totally agree, it's about finding what works for us, rather than systems or gurus.

I did intermittent fasting (IF) then keto for around a year. Whilst great for weight loss and lower blood pressure, I just couldn't live without sugar and having a little bit of sugar/non-keto begets more of same. So bye bye keto. Therefore, I went with a different option: whole foods only with 70% fruit and veg and small amount of protein, the pegan diet. Much more sustainable. Can still do IF with it, though it feels harder than when combining IF with keto. Will up the IF and if necessary add keto back in if I want to lose more weight in future. To my mind, whatever we go with has to be sustainable and work for us personally. I remember the line from a diet show years ago: diets don't work, lifestyle changes do. Agree with your point that whatever we change has to fit into the bigger life picture and as it takes 3 weeks to form a new habit, we may need to do something like setting a reminder till the habit forms. If the habit never quite sticks, then is it really right for us? Sure, few things that are good for us are easy, but certainly they should get easier IMHO otherwise maybe we are right to look into different approaches...maybe use the thing we were trying out, but in a more tactical way with something else as the base everyday option... I think it's good to keep experimenting as life's a journey not a destination... "We often learn what our right path is when we take steps off it."

But in the sense of genuine kindness, women do often find that attractive. Hey Malin! I related a lot with your experience in this video. I've struggled (still struggle haha) with balancing seeking a successful career and enjoying the life Im currently living. Its a lot of pressure to live up to other expectations of “meeting your potential” especially when it doesn't match how you view yourself. While grappling with my identity, I watched this anime called Neon Genisis Evangelian which I'd be interested in seeing your opinions of. It made me rethink what my identity really was, why I have this certain drive to fulfill others expectation of who I am. It also dealt a lot with the loneliness that accompanies being your singular self. It really triggered something in me to let go of these weighted expectations I carry. Anyways, love your videos! They inspire me to think more critically about my life!

Thank you so much for sharing your story, it feels really special that this was recommended to me as it's like looking into a mirror of what I'm currently going through, you're extremely brave for putting this out there for people to watch. The biggest hurdle I've faced is opening up to people, because how people perceive me is so different to the behaviour I experience when I binge; I go to the gym 6x a week, study hard for university, etc, so people always dismiss it when I say I've overeaten, or that it's fine because it was 'only' a protein bar, when in reality I'd bought 16 of them to last two weeks only to eat them all in one sitting. It can be really horrible to know you're putting on weight and damaging your body while other people are telling you it's fine, even though they don't understand the harm your causing yourself under the surface. I think for me it's triggered by the desire to be punished in a weird act of self-sabotage, I feel I'm not working hard enough or being good enough, and then I binge because I deserve it and the hard work I've put into my body should be destroyed, only for the guilt to set in immediately after. It's very hard to let go of perfectionism and the need for control because the weight of other people's expectations is such a burden to bear sometimes. Just writing this comment has been very therapeutic for me, and a lot of your other videos seem really relatable, so keep doing what you're doing because it's immensely appreciated :-)

its scary how similar we are. i also just gained 5 kilos in a month. 2 years ago i lost about 20kg and finally felt more comfortable with my body. yes i developed a complicated relationship with food but i was finally happy, confident. now that i gained weight i want to loose it again but this time in a healthier manner. i am working with a nutritionist im eating more and not starving myself. because i know that the binge eating came from me starving myself all those months. this time i want to work with myself and not against. im also a very healthy and active person. the people around me know that and i do get compliments on my healthy habits. binge eating was my secret. it was something nobody got to see, it was so private i was just so ashamed… ive been binge free for 2 weeks now and for the first time in a long time i actually dont feel the desire to binge. yes i binged on stuff like nuts, low fat cheese and yoghurts, sorbets etc all that healthy stuff but i still gained weight because its not all about what u eat but its about how much. its about how u treat the food. treat it with less respect and it will treat u with less respect.(i believe in karma) i have more patience now and i understand that i wont loose it all in a week this time, and thats okay yk? im sending all my love and hugs over to u, we will get out of this. to everyone reading this, u can do this and U R STRONG u r not pathetic or weak u r human and like a child learning to walk, we will fail over and over again but eventually, with enough patience, discipline and love we will make it. be gentle to yourself and treat yourself like u would treat others. and dont make it too complicated !! sometimes u just have to start from the roots and go from there. and if it takes weeks, months or even years, learn to come to terms with that because its time well spent. in case nobody told u yet, i love u and u r enough.

This video has made me feel less alone and thank you so much for talking about your experiences. I completely relate to you with everything you said in the video, when I got more stressed, I gained 12 kgs from all the binging i was doing, and having a painful medical condition that is only worsened by excess weight has effected me a lot. I think when trying to get out of your cycle, you think that you are going to completely stop and never binge again, but that isn't true. Its going to take so many attempts to ease back into a better relationship with food. You say you wont go back to it but you do, and when you recover, that will happen less frequently. Eating more protein in my meals has helped me stay more full, and curb cravings for binging. Other than that, I agree with you when it comes to fixing your external stressors to help yourself, because its always about something else. I really wish you all the best and hope you're doing better. Thank you so much for uploading this, Malin. I never hear people talk about this.

I can relate Malin! My partner hangs out with his friends on a Monday, so I would order maccas to my door when he was out. One night I was hungry so I ordered it while he was getting ready to leave. I was tracking my order and it was on its way over and about 3 mins away and my partner wasn’t close to leaving let. So I messaged the driver on the delivery app asking him if he could please wait til my partner left! He said he had another order to deliver so couldn’t wait around and asked if there was anywhere safe he could leave it for me. So I got him to leave it down the road in a park so that when my partner had finally left for the evening I walked down the road to the park where my maccas was sitting waiting for me. I don’t remember the order but it would’ve been two large chips, nuggets and two burgers that I would’ve eaten within 15mins. I haven’t told him I did that, I’m so embarrassed. But one day I might. I have been a month binge free now and have lost 2kgs. It’s something that I’ll have to manage for the rest of my life as it’s a coping mechanism for me. Something that has helped me is getting excited about cooking again. I love to cook and eating home cooked meals that are not ultra processed like chicken nuggets, help you to stay fuller for longer and help you to feel better about yourself. I love fast food, but I also love healthy tasty food I’ve made myself and can be proud of. Thank you for sharing your story, I wish the best for you.

Hi Malin, I wouldn't ordinarily comment on a YT video, but I noticed that this was just published and hasn't had much of a response yet. I just wanted to say that I've experienced all of what you described, from eating a whole loaf of bread for toast to hoping the delivery driver would just drop off the food without saying anything - even to eating beyond fullness. You've described very well not just the symptoms of binge eating, but the feelings around it too. I can't point to anything in this video that I haven't experienced myself. For me personally, I've experienced bouts of depression throughout my life and food is one way that I've used to treat it, to the point of bingeing. However, and I expect that this isn't true for all binge eaters, I believe now that my eating was a response to ADHD. I know it's trendy nowadays to claim that you have ADHD, but oftentimes the symptoms for the two overlap and are confused for one another. I haven't yet sought treatment for this, but the mere recognition of my ADHD has helped a lot and has eased my symptoms significantly. With that said, I think that this is an excellent video and describes very well not just the symptoms of binge eating, but the feelings too. I hope you're doing better nowadays.

Well i tend to disagree with some of his opinions. Why just see the good and ignore the bad. Looking at the world is like looking or inspecting a house, car or even a person. We inspect a house to make sure its in livable conditions or one who inspects cars to make sure its safe to drive etc. We ignore the good things we inspect bc they speak for themselves but the bad things that needs fixing sticks out like a sore thumb. If we inspect the roof of the home and its damage we need to replace it before it causes more problems. Turning a blind eye to the roof means you dont care about the house or your well being. If y

I agree with what you are saying, unfortunately I didn't make it clear. I believe we need both sides for as you mention we can't be ignorant of the bad and the decay as that leads us to delusion

Depends what context are you speaking about. Sure, many things are better, especially the things that are talked about. But many are not: "Western morality" is in fact letting genocides happen as we speak in the world. Tech companies and capitalism are going further and further to rid you of rights and F u in the ass whenever possible and more. U can't repair your devices anymore, u have to buy new. Companies force you to accept ToS that are unlawful. It's a clown world bro. I love my people, but world is definitely not going the right way.
