David Lynch's Influence on Video Games - A Tribute
RIP David Lynch - 1946-2025
0:00 Intro
2:00 Harvester
5:14 Alan Wake
7:13 Silent Hill 2
11:45 Conclusion
This video is a lot different from others on my channel, but I wanted to talk about my favorite director and artist of all time. David Lynch was really important and a lot of developers and designers for video games thought so too, his influence is genuinely incalculable. This is a look at 3 games - Harvester, Silent Hill 2, and Alan Wake and how they were influenced by his work, but it's mostly a tribute to the best director who ever lived. Thank you.

Have You Heard Gaming? | Sonic The Hedgehog
I'm watching twin peaks for the first time and I keep thinking about disco elysium
I feel like if this generation hadn't been raised on Goosebumps, X-Files, and David Lynch; modern horror as we know it would be completely different. The whole liminal space craze/fixation and analog horror as a whole feels like something that I'd derive from Lynch as a filmmaker. His influence is immeasurable and the fact there's no word quite synonymous with yet as widespread as "Lynchian" is a testament to his unyielding legacy. Hope him, Angelo, and Julee are all up in the white lodge enjoying Cheetos, cokes, black coffees, and cherry pie. RIP David.
That's how you know he's a genius A whole other medium and he has tons of influence. Some great games too. RIP. He was a great one.
It’s pretty incredible how Lynch not only changed film and television but the arts in general. Truly the best to ever do it.
Every yakuza is peak in some way. I can't wait to play pirate majima
Fun fact David lynch ACTUALLY did a commercial for the PS2 called “The third place!” And once I heard the news about his passing it made me think about the PS2 and the amount of nostalgia I have playing games like TEKKEN SpongeBob kingdom hearts SSX Jak and Daxter Sly cooper ratchet and clank and most importantly all of those long trips to Circuit city toys r us Best Buy etc! Also forgot about tak and the power of juju! Man the PS2 really did change my life did it?
I like both and they are the only Sonic games that matters to me. I don't like any 2D games (except of Fighting Games), and the modern 3D Sonic games after the Sonic Adventure games never was the same, different formula of gameplay and such... Sonic Adventure 1 and Sonic Adventure 2 for the win 🔥
Alan Wake (the first one) - I stopped playing roughly twenty minutes in because of the obnoxious gunplay. Does it add anything to the formular later on or do I seriously have to point a flashlight at every single enemy before engaging them in combat? Should I give it another chance?
The flashlight is a major mechanic that drives combat, it’s not for everyone but imo adds to the games intensity. If anything it’s worth maybe trying the game on easy to get through the story, it’s really good
The combat is very, very repetitive in the first game. People like it for the story and atmosphere; the gameplay is just sort of there.
Harvester looks interesting so I added it to my wishlist and skipped its section in the video :P
Alan Wake is quite Twin Peaks, but Alan Wake 2 is VERY Twin Peaks: The Return-coded I appreciate the way Remedy & Sam Lake use Twin Peaks as an inspiration. Because while they take broader character equivalents and the tone and stuff... ultimately a LOT of what Remedy is trying to say with the Alan Wake (a lot to do with art and creation and what that takes from a creator) games is quite diferent different than what Twin Peaks has to say (on the nature of evil, its coexistence among our world etc). Makes it feel unique, while wearing TP's influence on its sleeve.
How could you miss Persona and Zelda Link's Awakening :-)
I’m aware of the influences! If I talked about everything the video would be hours long haha
@@TroyVault That's fair :-)
Also, if you haven't played Deadly Premonition, you absolutely should. It's an amazing experience with how broken and absurd it is, while being (totally not) inspired by Twin Peaks :)
I wish the PC port was better, it’s nearly unplayable which has prevented me from biting the bullet on it, I should put it on my ps3
Harvester is the one video game that I physically cannot bring myself to play, it bothers me and gets under my skin in a way that I can't quite comprehend. The amount of nights you spent talking about Twin Peaks during the pandemic and onwards while we hung out are uncountable. That juxtaposition between the beautiful atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest and the uncanny horrors in Twin Peaks is incredible, I don't think anyone else could juggle those dispirit tones like Lynch could. Great video, Jude.
same bro , same
So THPS3 AND THUG are the best ones. THUG 2 is just a fun bonus game.
Son todos buenos. A mi el que mas me marco y el que mas jugue fue el 2011
SA1 still has roots tied to arcade game design. You have a ton of control with the spin dash, you can mash it, cancel it, charge it for different speeds, spin dash jump and more. The level design is built around this level of control, creating a beautiful gameplay system. SA2 streamlines everything while removing the ability to make sonic move as fast and precise while simultaneously putting more focus on pixel level precision to maintain your speed which is more frustrating than skill based. It also emphasizes shallow things like properly timing light ring dash like mini quick time events. It’s not bad, just not as elegant, expressive or deep as SA1
American Wasteland was a huge part of my childhood. Probably beat the story 10 times. There’s something to be said about the feeling you get when beat a game and this game had it. I was probably 10 at the time and I swear shit made me wanna cry 😂 P8 was a amazing as well with the skater videos you could watch
I highly prefer adventure 1 to adventure 2
I suppose SA2 was more linear to accomodate the ranking system but yeah, SA1 feels more like an actual classic Sonic game.
25:00 I was about to be like “you didn’t even grab the board” (for the kill it objective) and immediately after I noticed you moved a picnic table to hit the gap on that one. I forgot you can literally grab and move stuff, and the game tells you that. I’m new. Loving the game in 2025. Heard about it for years.
Guys over at Sonic Retro looked up character tables in the code and found no traces of later addition of Tails.
That’s really interesting, almost makes it even more frustrating that they put the effort into making him playable without the mech in Chao Garden though imo. I miss the tails levels a lot in SA2, I think I would’ve felt better about mech stages if it was limited to eggmans stages
The music alone in SA one is just way better. Even the ost is similar to the classics, where some themes are remixed as if its the 2nd act
People love to hate on things nowadays, it's so tiring. Granted, there are issues within each game but they are all so much fun. Great video!
I see often ppl saying that IW is weaker storywise than LAD but honestly? I can't agree with that. LAD had alot of earlier plot points completely dropped and condensed into a cutscene at the end, furthermore the game kinda meanders once you reach around ch 10, not to mention that the whole plot point in ch 12 is not well handled considering the weight of it. This culminates with a very contrived ending and honestly a weak main villan whose motivations I don't really feel that much and let's not go how they hanlded one of the endings. Anyway just my feeling on the whole thing edit: This is to say that I feel that if ppl are to lob down aspects of IW for not being well developed, they should do the same for LAD, because the game does have the same problems
Now do all of the side titles (I'm only half joking. Yakuza is my favorite game series, and I love them all. Yes, even Dead Souls).
They need to make a remastered collection of these games for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S
I read the thumbnail as THEY ALL ARE GOONERS
As someone who has played through the entire mainline yakuza/like a dragon series. There wasn't a single entry I hated or despised, since I love this series so damn much. It isn't perfect, each entry tries to improve and evolve what the previous one did. Sometimes they might even change things if it gets too boring like with 4 and it having multiple playable characters or 7 changing the gameplay system to be a turn based rpg. Both next entries (5 and IW) expanded on those ideas and improved upon what the problems were in the last entry. We need to be grateful, we have a series like Yakuza and also a company like RGG that are willing to shake things up and take a risk. Let's not take it for granted and enjoy some shirtless men brawling it out!
I think the yakuza 4 story IS stupid but thats why i love it so much. It doesn’t have to be some perfect story its fun
I think yakuza 5 is soo underrated. Saijimas section is definitely a bit too long but he has my favorite sub stories in the game. It also has one of the best characters in the franchise and i think they deserve credit for trying to make a story that big
Every Yakuza game is like a snack platter. Its all different, every one has different tastes, but its all good.
Gaiden short? hahahahah in what way is Gaiden short?
All the games are good. My favorite one is Yakuza 7/LAD
One thing that I don't like about the criticism of the yakuza games on twitter or on reddit is how reductive can the fans comment about the games (either in a positive or negative way). I really agree with this video, and the yakuza community needs to chill
You immediately hooked me with the best Sonic CD song in the first few seconds
players get a little extra with it but it seems like you cant really love something like this unless you hate it a little bit. like star trek fans that have watched everything will absolutely tear individual episodes to shreds. lol
I genuinely never thought I'd find a video that's so spot on to how I've felt with not just the Yakuza fandom but most fandoms as of the last few years, prime examples being Falcom and Atlus fandoms as well. Yakuza 5 was my absolute favorite because it was so focused on itself rather than trying some macro plot focus and that's one of the reasons why Infinite Wealth finally dethroned 5 for me. It's everything about this series and its legacy that means so much more than any individual title or overhyped online fandom drivel. I think all too often people take being "objective" as this all or nothing approach that removes their experience in a way to cater to people that aren't them which is a shame. Cheers on making a video like this man and I hope this type of behavior settles down over the next few years.
Here's my perspective, as someone who used to think Yakuza was just Japanese GTA: I bought Yakuza 0 for my PS4 back in 2018 on a whim while buying my Switch. When I booted it in, for almost a full year, I lived and breathed 20 year old Kazuma Kiryu - I adored the story, setting, music, and combat. Skip two years later, I got all the Kiryu games till 6 - including Dead Souls (which I'm still playing) - and never have I cried so much until The Song Of Life. Yes, I got emotional a little during 0, 2, and 3, but NONE OF THEM could even come close to making me feel how Yakuza 6 made me feel. And despite all of the stuff I read up afterwards on reddit and other sites (Blockuza 3 is still my favorite joke title) I still think it's an amazing series - especially the story of The Dragon of Dojima, Kazuma Kiryu 🐉
My conclusion when I played both was enjoyed both but had more fun in SA1, my biggest gripe was Tails being tied down to a mech. His gameplay was pretty much my favorite of SA1 so his SA2 gameplay was a major downgrade. When both games were finished I went back to SA1 way more, sometimes I’d boot up SA2 but just to play City Escape and maybe something else.
In terms of gameplay, I think SA1 takes the cake every day, but I find myself coming back to SA2 more because I like SA2’s story more. Well, to be honest, it’s a combination of that and the fact that SA1’s UI and menus honestly make me sick to look at. I get it was early 3D era, but they’re SO UGLY. Not bad by any means, I think functionality-wise it’s perfectly serviceable, I just hate the look of it. If there’s a mod on PC to make the UI look better maybe I’d find myself enjoying the game more, but it actually makes me want to avoid playing the game, so I just play SA2 instead.
My thoughts exactly. All I did on Adventure DX was restore the graphics back to the original Dreamcast and not much else. In Sonic Adventure 2, I actively got mods for gameplay tweaks, like removing the limit on the treasure radar.
I think the problem is that this minority tends to be "noisy" in social networks, also pointing the negative get more attention which leads to discussion on forums, as for me, I'm glad there's variety to enjoy from Yakuza series and spin-offs. Also unrelated question, where is that clip from at [05:11]?, I have a vague idea but I cannot remember. Great video!
Sonic adventure!
My personal favorites are THPS 3&4, THUG 1, and THAW. However the original game has a certain charm to it that is unforgettable.
really nice video and well said! and like you mentioned at the end, I don't understand how there are still people recommending to skip some of the games, especially yakuza 3 like I heard many times (or yakuza 4 since it's also not as favorite but I haven't heard people say to skip it unlike y3). if someone really doesn't like it that much then at least watch a summary or cutscenes only
EVERY GAME SUCKSSSS 😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬💥💥💥💥💢💢💢
my complaints of the series are really just gameplay oriented, and they only bother me a lot if i'm replaying a game. the story goofs no matter how bad they are don't hurt the series one bit for me. infinite wealth has a weird ending though i probably won't ever change my mind on that
Perfect....not perfect...Upsides,downsides... Who cares? One thing stays unchanged. They are GOOD overall.
I think it just comes down to some people suck and love to moan
