Hi Cassie, I watched your first day from hospital video and this video, Its great to see your recovery. How are you doing now? Even I was recently diagnosed with herniated disc about a month back, and was wondering if I should take the surgery route. Wanted to ask what made you decide on the surgery, and during the 3 months before your diagnosis to surgery, did your symptoms of numbness and weakness in your hands get progressively worse during these 3 months or was it nearly the same? Also how bad were these weakness and numbness compared to your current, was trying to understand whats the % of reduction in numbness/weakness post surgery, if at all you could put a number like that based on your experience? I have spinal compression but one episode of acute pain (thats when the diagnosis happened) and since then just slight pain on my right arm and upper back but no numbness/weakness yet. Have been wondering whether to wait and see and how long. Would love to know how you are doing now. :-)

I had trouble in recovery.. they said I was holding my breath but to me it felt like I was sleeping. Im in a Aspen Vista collar and I sleep in a zero gravity lawn chair the incline is PERFECT! Still eating apple sauce and yogurt. Trying mashed potatoes tonight! I live alone. I had a hip replacement six months ago. I was brought home by a friend but then was alone for the rest of the time. I figured I could do all the stuff I had to do but of course much more slowly. It was a disaster. I fell using my walker and cut my arm. I crawled back to my bed and passed out. I woke to a bunch of blood on the sheets - the cut was not serious at all. Now I have to have ACDF in the next couple of months. I am freaked out by after hospital situation. What do you suggest??

This was very helpful! May I ask how long it was from the time you had symptoms until you had the surgery? My biggest discomfort is numbness and weakness in my left arm and hand, and loss of dexterity. At this point for me it has been about 4 months - have tried quite a few things with no change. My biggest concern is permanent damage if I leave it too long. Dr doesn’t seem to think this is too big a deal, but I can’t imagine letting it go is a good thing. Thank you again for the informative videos!

9 months of symptoms for me. Pain left side of neck, upper back (rhomboid area) and pain radiates from left shoulder to whole arm to pinky finger and ring finger. Took long because my doctor did neck xray and said it was osteo arthritis not satisfied went to an orthopedic doctor says severe rhomboid strain and asked if i want steroid shot. I change primary doctor and once he found out it was going on for 9 months now he told me to get an MRI. Referred to a Ortho Spine Center and diagnosed with cervical Radiculopathy and some bone spurs on 4 levels. I had to have ACDF surgery on 4 levels (c3-T1) stayed in hospital for 3 nights and on hard collar for 3 weeks then switch to soft collar for 2 weeks. All pain gone and on the road to recovery, light PT and OT for mobility and strengthen muscles (light rehab since i'm not fully fused yet). It's a gradual recovery, takes time once fully fused (9 months for me) my ortho surgeon lifted restrictions and i workout more to strengthen muscle on my back and left arm. 3 years later i'm 80% better! I have slight numbness on my left finger and thumb due to compressed nerve damage i am used to it now. Got my life back, glad i had the surgery wish it was sooner. I joined StrecthLab to improve my mobility and improve muscle stiffness.
