BMW R1200 GSA auxiliary lights DIY repair. I thought they were beyond repair so stripped them down anyway just for a look inside them. Turns out I cleaned the terminals on one of them and it began working again. The one with the crack was left inside over night. I re assembled them to put back on the bike until I sourced a replacement only to find them both working!!. So, before they got wet ag...

Great video I done 4.4 update a few days ago and finding it changes the bike alot for the better. Have you got a link to the nav bar that's on the bike ? Cheers
@@pauldobbo Hi, the nav bar came from 'uncle wangs shop' just Google it. It's a trustworthy shop, we've had various accessories from that site and they are good quality. 👍
@@jameswalton8532 cheers mate does the screen still move up and down with the bracket attached
@@pauldobbo hi, yes the screen is still adjustable. Uncle wang sells 2 different types of these items. The one on chiko's bike is more difficult to fit. I have ordered and am waiting for the one that mounts behind the screen. It's easier to fit as you just take the screen off, position the holes over the screen mount holes then just refit the screen, I'll post a video of me fitting it when it arrives if that will help?
@@jameswalton8532 that would be great cheers
Thanks for the mention guys, the black screen does make your backside twitch. ✌️
Just did mine haha thanx for the video!!

Excellent just fixed mine , heated front got it off and contact cleaner cleaned pcb glued back together all working Ace video mate
Great news, I'm pleased for you. I don't mind using main dealers when I have to, my local one, bowkers in Preston, UK are very good but when you can save a bit of cash like this it's terrific.
Hi James I bought a 1200 from a dealership 2nd hand not long after I washed it 1 LED failed and was not covered under warranty…so I bit the bullet and paid for a new light@£199 Then the other failed,I kept the 1st set,I found your vid and thought I’d have a go and bingo the pair of failed lights work after drying out and doing the hot glue “thing”,I just wished I’d found your vid first and saved me £400….thanks anyhows👍
Mate that's great news. I'm pleased to have helped. Least you have a spare now👍
Nice, any more footage of you paddling that stretch of the canal?
Hi yes there are a couple of other videos from that trip on my channel. The title of this clip should say the disused section of the Lancaster canal as it's only about 3 feet deep. I recommend you go and do it, summer is best time when it's really over grown👍
@jameswalton8532 Thanks will take a look. We are just getting back into kayaking and want to do the whole lancaster canal especially the disused sections 😎
@@l333boa well worth doing, just watch out for the swan's, if they have young with them you might have to get out and walk past them!!
I need to remove my fog lamps but finding it difficult to unclip and disconnect them can you tell me where I need to stick the flat screwdriver to disconnect them
Hi, it's difficult to explain, you have to push a very small screwdriver down the side of the plug to release the catch. Sorry if that doesn't help much but get a good light in there and you should see it!
@@jameswalton8532 many thanks for the reply I didn’t need to remove them in the end , the reason I had to remove them was to register bike on Spanish plates but got the engineer to add them onto the COC document and it sailed through the Spanish ITV test after adding them on to the document
@@andrewpringle5568 that's interesting, are you saying that if they didn't get added to that document, you can't have them on you bike in Spain?
@@jameswalton8532 yes apparently so
How did you get the connector off? I cant figure it out.
Hi, in the video at the point 3min 43 sec you can see a tiny tab on the outside of the plug. If I remember correctly you have to disengage this tab from its housing using a small thin screwdriver. That should allow you to pull the plug apart. Hope that helps and good luck. Regards James
0:41 Next incorrect point. Most engines actually require some form of back pressure to work as efficiently as possible (that's why a cat also isnt bad for the engine, removing it does much more harm than good). The engineers accounted for the flap, dont take it personally but I'd rather trust the engineers that studied the matter over several years than anybody out there who thinks he knows better
I'll trust the Dyno figures! My latest 2018 has been Dyno re-mapped at BHP-UK, check their RUclips channel. As well as correcting the terrible fueling the bikes are delivered with they 'lock' the flap in the open position. Every throttle percentage setting throughout the rev range produces a smoother increase in both power and torque. All the leading tuners including BMW sell flap delete systems!! Any one with half a mechanical mind knows some engines need back pressure to perform but most modern performance engines run negative pressure. These flaps are for noise pollution only. If anyone reading this fancies doing it, and theirs hasn't sized up yet, probably in the closed position, try it! If it's not for you just put it back to original. I don't think I'm more knowledgeable than a BMW engineer but everyone knows the auto industry is 'hamstrung' by the ridiculous nonsensical environmental mentalist's in the EU that set ever more stupid restrictions on engines. I encourage everyone to release the real potential from their bike, whatever make or model. Talk to a tuner that knows if it's suitable for your bike not the arrogant RUclips 'experts'
0:32 Nothing more British and dumb to complain about a flap/valve "because of the EU" 🤦♂ BTW the American models also have this flap 🤡
cracking little Vlogg of your Travels, Well done and thanks for sharing! Ant !
Cheers Ant👍
Thanks for sharing. How did you unplug the power plug to the light? Is there a catch or lip which needs to be disenagaged somehow, or did you just pull it straight off?
Hi, don't pull it straight off, use a thin electric style screwdriver to release the tabs at the bottom of the holes you can see👍
Which holes?
@@fabriziomargaroli4398 hi, if you push a very thin screwdriver between the plug and the outside of the housing it should release a retaining catch which then allows you to pull the plug out. Hope that helps.
I have the same problem, this is going to be another winter project, thanks
Good luck 👍
Your tip saved me from buying a replacement, thanks.
That's great👍 it's nice to have some feed back. BMW is a great product but if we can save a few 💰💵££ here and there it helps. Regards from England

It seems the postage will be well over R300 (£16)! :O My Drift was a gift so I have no idea of what they cost, but it might make more sense for you to buy a lens kit or a second-hand Drift for that amount? Sorry, I did not even consider that postage might be so expensive. I remember it being much cheaper when I sent some things to Canada a couple of years ago.
Thanks for the offer anyway, I appreciate it👍
I should have said before, I'll re-emburse the cost of the postage to you if you send the item? James
The USB charging port on my Drift Stealth 2 is broken. If I can not fix it, then I might as well throw the darn thing away if you do not want it. Maybe you can use the lens from mine. [Your drift repair video has comments disabled]
That's very kind of you thank you. If you don't mind sending it I'll try to fix mine. If you could send it to firefighter James Walton Fleetwood fire station Fleetwood FY76UJ I will try and re-emburse your postage cost if I can. I will enable the comments on the video Thanks again James
Hi! My Right AUX light suddenly did not work after I wash my bike. I didn't use any pressure wash, just water hose it... How did you remove the connectors, I have a hard time trying to remove it... What are the things to look out for? Just the clip terminal?
Hi, I used a small but long, flat head screwdriver, follow the wire down into the plug and you should see where to release the fastening. It's a simple catch, just hard to access. Let me know how you get on, good luck. James
Hi. I removed the whole valve assembly on my 2010 GS and replaced it with a piece of plain stainless steel tube of the same length and diameter. I left the servo box in place but sealed up the holes where the cables came through. Bike thinks all is still intact so no issues. Added bonus is no more skinned knuckles when trying to clean behind it. John
Hi John, nice job I expect it would look 'cleaner' as well. I now have a 2018 GSA and have just disconnected the cables that operate the valve after the bike showed a exhaust valve fault, the valve is in the fully open position and the cables operate freely and the fault has disappeared! As a side note I've had the fuel map tuned on a Dyno, the flat spot at 5000 rpm has disappeared, I've got 8 more horsepower at the wheel and the mpg has increased, well worth doing. Seasons greetings, James.
@@jameswalton8532 My venerable old GS (2010) has 65000 on it now and still feels sprightly. The exhaust is a little louder and the bike does pull a little better. If I could find a way to add it I'd send a picture
@@johnroberts5924 65000, every credit! I haven't run a car for 2 years now so maybe mine will reach those big miles, done about 7500 this year. I had a 2010 anniversary GSA and of the 4 I've owned it's still my favourite, it's the yellow one in the valve removal video.

What year is the bike? Do they all have the valve in all countries? Does it set a code when removed?
Hi, bike is a 2010, I believe all models throughout the world are the same? The only code that appears is when the valve spindle seizes up and stops turning, they all do that even if you don't touch them. If you remove the disk carefully you can put it back if you don't like it. I now have a 2014 Gsa and found the valve to be seized in the open position, so I've disconnected the cables that operate it and just run it in that position. The valve is only there to keep the noise level down and they definitely run better without them, 👍 regards James
That’s ingenious!
Cos' I'm too tight to buy new ones🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 As it turns out, we went to raceways to see if they could get bulbs and I've traded up again, pick new one up on monday🙈🙈🙈

There is no one on youtube ho do this with the r1200 gs lc i video share
I now own a liquid cooled 2014 GSA. I was removing the valve on this one but found it to be seized in the open position so I disconnected the cables that operate the valve and now it runs with the valve constantly open and the bike runs fine. I'm going to buy a 'straight through' exhaust system that has no catalytic converter soon, so the valve and cat will be gone🎉👍
For sure mic, they'll be turning in their graves!!!!
That's a DISGRACE there must be thousands of men and women gave their lives from the Blackburn area ☹️
And now, after these months, it's all right? No problem, after the valve removal?
pippo19741974 Bike is fine, I use it almost every day without any issues at all!! Regards james
Hi limitedinfinity, there is a definite increase in torque as a result of removing valve, I've noticed it on local roads where I find myself backing off the throttle in places I didn't have to before and also trying for another gear when I'm already in 6th!!! Have a go at taking it out, you can always put it back if you don't like it, as you know, it's behind the CAT and lambda sensor so it won't affect the bike. Thanks for watching, good luck.
i released the cables from the valve motor's end~ and hell does it feel a whole lot smooooooother on pick off~
I suspect the valve is provided to get the CAT to light off quicker when starting off with a cold engine. My 328iX has a similar valve to restrict the dual exhaust pipes down to one when cold for that reason. Thank a tree hugger for that P.O.S.
Best friend how you have disconnected the valve cable, is there error on the display when you have disconnected.
Does the bike go better now without that flap in there? I've owned GSs since 2000 and never had that flappy thing, it must be for noise reduction and nothing else, my present GS has that damn flappy thing in.. BMW Motorrad tell me the bike needs it, but like you've said its a mechanical thing at the end of the exhaust system so what if its removed... I have an Akrapovic slip on, that still sounds like the OEM pipe... I'm getting my drill out on Saturday and doing some modifying..
Did you do it?
cool wish I was there
Nice job. Good video. I just did similar with an iON Air and a Contour+. But instead of Heli coil, used Brass 3/8"-16 to 1/4"-20 Convert Screw Adapter. Used 5/16 drill, followed by 3/8 tap. Yes, you're right. Hard to tap such a shallow hole. Let me tell you, once a drill starts going into one of these little camera, they want to go all the way. I lucked out. Thanks for the video. Have one more iON that I may try your way.
