RF Field Strength Meter - Radiation Patterns
Let's take a look at the Surecom SS-10 Field Strength Meter. We use this device to see what an antenna radiation pattern looks like (in the field).
The @CoffeeandHamRadios crew will be doing live testing in Orlando in a couple of weeks, to compare near field radiation patterns from our Poseidon antenna - hung on a fiberglass mast, vs. carbon-fiber mast.

Step attenuator - ARRL Auction Find!

I got this for cheap from the ARRL auction a couple months ago. This is a step attenuator, and will let you "dial in" specific amounts of attenuation, up to 100dB. The particular model I have has BNC connections on either port, but it does work just fine. I think the vintage is somewhere in early to mid- 1970's. Amazing High-Power Portable Radio Project!
Hey im Australian, what was yhe first season? Skeeter season? Is that a mosquito season. Or a "shooting" thing ? (Bad dark humour incoming) Do you have marshmallow roasting season? That's when everything is on fire and all you can do is make smalls? With hope the house will still be there
Your definition is correct on terminology Jim, the idiots saying you're wrong, are, idiots. They've learned from Chinese whispers, or donald trump, both comical anyway, comet should know better, but there is a reason comet does home user stuff, and doesnt do any good in the big boys league like TXRX/Bird or Telewave, (ie: commercial and government world who do know their stuff) and this is one classic example why when they cant get something as simple as a diplexer named correctly, its also why I dont buy comet.
Make sure you are 2-3 wavelengths away
A wideband, frequency insensitive, amplified rf level measuring device at a ham convention. Results will be interesting.
YES!! 100%! Plus no matter how long you take to make cables nice and neat, within a week you have a matted mess under your desk! EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!
What I have not found is what is the current draw on this, on high power?
Hopefully this test puts the matter to rest.
I'm positively THRILLED to see that you have a good FS meter now Jim! I personally believe that they are an indispensable item and just as vital as a dummy load for proper operation of ones station. A FS meter was generally one of the very first projects a ham would build as a technician. Use it to measure the antenna patterns, and also the coupling between adjacent conductors. Looking forward to more videos using this tool. 73 OM 👍
Which antenna? Poseidon?
Yes - two "factory built" Poseidons
Looking forward to the results. i have worked with similar studies on smaller antennas where we had an anechoic chamber that let you have a lot more control of the variables in the environment the antenna is in. You don't have a lot of control over reflections and outside signal interference in the environment I would imagine you will have in the park in Florida. good Luck! 73
Are you going to put one of those on a painters pole for z axis measurements?
It would be cool to have something set up with a drone that could fly a route fixed by GPS and capture the data at a number of points. 4 arc's over top of the antenna starting at ground level and samples at ever 15 deg of elevation change. Probably would have to block out the drone control frequencies, but it would be a very handy tool!
I doubt we're gonna get that much science - We'd have to get 4 poles, or folks bring their own. On top of that, most of us can't read the screen more than 6 feet away..
That would be sweeeet!
@@FEPLabsRadio I know.. I was just "running" with an idea, I don't expect that it will come anywhere near to a reality, unless someone gets a wild hair and wants to do something for a story in the QEX magazine.. As for reading a meter far away, (here I go again), get one of the maker kids to take a PI Pico with wi fi, and hook it to the meter to read the voltage when its told to from a supervisory program over the wi fi, and then send it back to the program so it could record it some way. More dreaming on my part I guess! Although the Pi Pico's with wi fi are under $10 each..
Looking forward to Data
A theory every bit as provable as String Theory itself.
It is -6F in Boston NY with 1 FT snow and wind chill -15F . still snowing and forecast 1 to 3 FT snow toll with low of -10and wind chill of -40 . never got over 5F today ! Where did global warming go ?
Right?? it will be up in the 50’s here by Friday
This is what it takes to get you outside shooting a video! Nice Jeem!
I thought there was promises of a snow angel?
Heat Miser must have taken the day off.
I think you should have used your Ape Approve micrometer!
Wow I didn't know they get snow in Alabama
Enjoy it cold, but no snow in Huntsville, AL
My nephew lives up there. Y'all got the cold weather, we got cold and snow!
We got over 5” over here in Southeast Louisiana. Crazy
I saw some places in LA got 10" or so
Bout the same in Beaumont Tx
That Jacket must be keeping you warm
and 2 t-shirts underneath. Same jacket I had in the fire dept.
@ still use my Ambulance jacket because a t shirt and sweatshirt keeps you nice and warm
Gonna need to take measurements in 6 different locations of your property and average them out..ya know for accuracy
You have about as much snow as I do here in Wisconsin
It's a level 2, French toast emergency. Bread, eggs, milk and go.
For all that are watching this is just LA (Lower Alabama) They got blasted with snow. Us in the norther part of Alabama got nothing but dry chapped lips and cold as a witches breast in a brass bra weather….I smell a government conspiracy!!! Just joking hope your are enjoying the snow and be careful with your hip.
Pretend I am shaking my fist and yelling about you getting off my lawn! We're up to about 2" or so, just south of Montgomery. I'll ship some chapstick up that way!
Holy cow Jim.. hope ya stocked up on bread and milk
More importantly - Diet Dr Pepper and smokes, son!
Im from neshoba county which is 2-4 hours from Alabama and hes so right on the seasons😂😂
Right, Courtney?? I forgot holy crap hot and swampy season.
@FEPLabsRadio the weather is bi polar😂
Son, it's so cold up here it could freeze the balls off a brass monkey.
24 here. I think down in the teens tonight. 40's or better by THursday
This software is implicitly good, but it interferes too much with the basic system, e.g. bluez, if you install it, it will automatically be uninstalled. This means that other services such as svx are not possible because the required components disappear again. Better keep your hands off it.
What you call "duplexer" is not a one-way device: generally speaking on a repeater are used a band-pass filter + a band-stop filter. ... And what you have in your hand is not a "band-pass" filter as you say: it is a low-pass + a high-pass filter.
NOOO! DON'T USE THAT DEVICE TO CONNECT MULTIPLE RADIO ON THE SAME ANTENNA !!! Generally speaking separation among the bands is not enough (it needs at least about 60 dB) to avoid the risk of damage by RF power into the rx of the other radio. Don't do it at home !!!
The industries are rife with mixups. Doesn't help the I/U keys are right next to each other on a QWERTY keyboard.
At HF it looks like you have 60db of isolation, given 100W you'd have 0.1mW of HF power on the VHF radio. On VHF you have 45db, given 100W on VHF you'd have 35mW of power on the HF radio. The answer might be as simple as an extra lowpass filter on the HF port to get more VHF rejection. Thanks for the follow up
Thumbs up, not sure if you terminated the antenna port of the duplexer during your testing, but the isolation may improve a little when antenna port is terminated verse left open circuit.
I didn't terminate the antenna port - was just looking at the isolation of the diplexer. I did mess with it off camera, and really didn't see much change at all - very negligible.
I have a Comet triplexer. It is connected to a 2m-only radio, 70cm hotspot, and SDR to pick up my county 857MHz P25. The 2m port also passes HF. I am not sure I would want 100W out of the 2m radio. It goes to 65W, but I run it at 25. The hotspot still works!
RIght - I keep the 9700 power low-ish, and it's the only radio on my triplexer. Normally, it's just d-star on a hotspot, and a few random repeaters. I've not used either of my *plexers in a 2 radio situation.
Can you use two diplexers, one on either end of a coax, to put two antennas on a single run of coax?
Are you talking about a 2 port radio to 2 separate antennas?
Yes you can. I did that in the commercial world. We put 800 MHz Nextel and 1900 MHz Sprint base stations on one coax and then diplexed them out to different antennas.
@FEPLabsRadio yup
"ya'lls comments" He has been assimilated by the bama bug! Thanks for the video Jeem! 73
Oh god! He reads these? What have we done?!?! 😂
:D
At around 10:00 it looks fine. They are not "band pass" filters. It's a combo "low pass" / "high pass" filter. That's why your not seeing it drop off at the top end. In the case of a diplexer they usually specify a upper frequency limit for the high pass side because above that it will start to attenuate the signal more and more the higher you go. A triplexer on the other hand has 3 types of filters. A low pass, band pass and high pass filter.
It's a duplidiplexicator.
Thanks for the explanation Jim. Learned something new today!
Glad I could help!
The definition I've come to know is that a duplexer allows two signals on the same band. A diplexer separates signals across two bands. Don't know that this is the definition established by God, but it's what I understand. And if you really want to cause a stir, try defining what signal is full duty cycle versus partial duty cycle. You'll get people resorting to fisticuffs over that one!
Amen to that - and I think your distinction about the "duplexer" is a better analogy with regards to splitting the same band.
I have an ICOM 705 (HF & VHF/UHF). What can I use to connect an HF antenna and a VHF/UHF antenna to the 705’s one antenna connector?
This is the exact thing you want. One connection to the radio, and then one connection from the device to HF, and the other to VHF/UHF.
@@FEPLabsRadioGreat!Do they make it with BNC connections?
You'd have to look around, check DX-Engineering. Amazon has a bunch of models of these, based on different frequency ranges, or outputs. I have a triplexer connected to my IC-9700 (2m,70cm, 23cm). Worst case, an adapter, or make a BNC to PL/N connector based on the diplexer you get. The cf-530 is PL-259 on all the common connector, so for the 705 you'd need a BNC to PL-259 cable.
@@FEPLabsRadio Thanks! Yeah, I’ve seen some possibly less quality ones with BNC. So, this one with adapters might be the best bet 👍🏼
This was very educational. Thank you!
While I applaud your desire to teach, I must inform you that you are wrong in your assessment of how each “device” works. Duplexers and Diplexers are the same thing! Both work on the separation of “frequencies” not “direction” of the signal. You are confusing a duplexer/diplexer with something that does move radio wave based of “direction” and that device is called a “circulator”. The duplexer/diplexers signals based on frequency, hence the fact that true repeaters separate the transmit and receiver frequency’s. There are many publications that describe these facts are far more detail should you choose to learn the “facts” about said devices! 73’s!
I should also say that duplexers tend to be capable of separating frequencies based on very small separations while diplexers tend to perform separations on a broader rage of frequency separation .
Thanks for watching. Multiple definitions said the same thing, which is what I said. Maybe circulator is yet another term for duplexer.
Perhaps you should disassemble a duplexer and then a diplexer…. They are NOT the same things!
@@FEPLabsRadiomuch like a Chevy and a Ford, diplexers and duplexers do close to the same things! Ergo…. They must be the same things…. Do you see the comparison?
I wish they were all called (de)multiplexers with qualifiers, as seen in other domains with similar issues. For example, signals can be time-division (de)multiplexed or freq-division (de)multiplexed.
Exactly - that is what a "mux" is - a multiplexer. We used mainframe terminals that were "muxed" to a single device that ran back to the mainframe, back in the day.
I think you have it bass ackwards... Diplex is directional and duplex is 2 Plex, tri is 3 Plex and quad is 4 Plex. All the duplexer cavites I've tuned has been for frequency. The diplexers have had 3 ports one for the radio, one for the antenna and one for a dummy load to dump the reverse RF.
