while a stock/low performance engine can get away with only using plastigauge.... you should still actually measure everything (with calipers, bore dial indicators, ETC) . plastigauge is pretty damn good... but in todays world of parts.... i check ALL of it lol . idk... i just remember that an "old breed" mechanic friend told me plastigauge isnt as accurate as measuring (with bore dial, you can check all 360 degrees. ETC) . best practice is what im saying ive done plastigauge only and sent it . . when i rebuilt a 74 kawi G5-100 in my dads basement...with a 2x4 and hammer... i didnt even do ANY measuring (or trimming of rings) i just sent it . now i did send the crank, rod, piston and rings ETC ETC.... off to get replaced/balanced but its got like 8000/9000 miles on that rebuild.... still runs great, starts 2nd kick cold, everytime 80% of the time. (when its -20F it may take 3 or 4) . i LOVE!!! that little G5... just indestructible.
