Fantastic Tales of Pro Audio
США
Добавлен 3 авг 2019
What went on behind the scenes in your favorite recordings both in front of the mics and behind the consoles? What are the stories behind the good, the bad and the ugly of the pro audio gear that made decades of hits possible?
My name is George Hajioannou and I’ve been part of the East Coast pro audio community for almost three decades so you can probably imagine that I have quite a few stories to tell. This channel will fill you in on the behind-the-scenes stories, from celebrity recording sessions, putting major and minor recording studios together to how I came to meet and work with lots of amazing “household name” clients who turned into really good friends.
Stay tuned, I can’t wait to share my most fantastic tales with you.

Don't Push So Hard Because It Is Going To Get Ugly
The Mana concept is beautiful but their Kickstarter made no sense if you look at it. Their goal was £5000 & 5k was all they needed to launch the production? seems like they took £5000 & vanished
Yep
How do you feel about the 500 series? Have you ever had the chance to A/B some units with their respective full size models? And finally, is it worth the investment to you? Thx
The power supply is the key issue - if you get a good rack with a great power supply you are in great shape. I think the 500 series modules are a good investment but keep in mind there are different levels of quality in the product.
@@fantastictalesofproaudio2391 thank you sir!
Who’s going to pick up and dust off this idea and put it back into production?
Who knows...
I hear you about not speaking unfavorably. Nevertheless I have heard similar (credible) stories regarding difficult work behind-the-scenes with Mariah, and J-Lo. OTOH Beyoncé and Whitney (RIP) receive only glowing reviews. Some singers have lovely voices, other singers are lovely people.
Well said and true
No one likes Madonna.
It's so cute!
Yes it is
Man, I remember the Mana. I was real sad to see that fizzle out. As soon as I saw the Rodec, I had the same thought.
I thought it was the same company ;-)
what a strange story. enjoying these short stories with glimpses into the lives of those working around us. thank you for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
Chris Rock thought Will was joking and found out otherwise lol
Who knows...
Rodec is for DJing.
Yep
@@fantastictalesofproaudio2391 Rodec built this one to be modular for different needs... Pretty interesting idea! When I saw the thumbnail of this video I thought "hey that looks like the new Rodec." From Rodec's website: "Need a great small-footprint tracking / summing console in the studio? You're a small electronic band armed with synths, sequencers, and a bass guitar, or a DJ/producer equipped with a computer, a sampler, and a collection of cherished vinyl records, rest assured, we've got you covered."
Interesting concept
@@fantastictalesofproaudio2391 The problem is that no one has made a good modular design - this one included - for DJing. A DJ mixer is a performance tool and it needs the ergonomics to operate it without looking at the thing, and without using more than one finger, and everything needs to happen instantly, meaning when I need to kill the bass on channel 1, then I need to be able to find the bass knob for ch 1 without looking, and turn it down to zero using just one finger, and that in a split second. Now look at what is presented here in this new Rodec: Wasted space everywhere, and tiny fiddly knobs that are impossible to operate as I explained. The original Rodec went bankrupt many years ago, and this is just some guy who bought the name and is trying his luck. He seems fairly clueless.

Neat!
Thank you for this series of sharing stories. I’m a young man who loves this stuff..
Glad you enjoy it!
If this is true this person is a piece of shit! How can you sell someone out for some gear that we can’t even take to the grave with us. Just pure evil
Shame, the divorced guy got the shaft! Rightfully so to avoid the ethics after that.
Weather vain. This is cool history, thank you for the post. 🎼
Thanks for listening
oh man......that's really horrible. friggin people
Love these stories!
Glad you like them!
I think this is so true. We have far too many options these days. It's overwhelming to the point where it actually stops your creativity. Taking it back to basics can be so freeing!
Totally agree!
Great to see these consoles are still being used. I worked for Trident back in the early 90s and tested many Vector channel strips. I worked for Malcolm Toft later when he started MTA. Fun times!
Thanks for sharing
what do you think about lauten audio mics ?
Never heard them so no opinion
what do you think about the famous adam audio a7X ?
narrow sweet spot - not a fan.
Frank Zappa's Dancing fool version? LOL.
Could be
Cool story.
Thanks!
A free rental. lolz
Great mic! I’ve been recommending it to many friends, and they all love it. However, I’ve noticed that when they use a UAD interface preamp with this mic, there’s a wired high frequency that makes the vocal sounds harsh. I don’t think it’s the mic itself because I’ve used it with various preamps in different studios without any issues. I don’t own a UAD interface, so I haven’t tested it myself. But I did receive some sessions with this combo that I noticed some problems with.
Thanks for sharing!
Gosh, happy to come across this but extremely sorry to hear of his passing. Dave was a good friend in Nashville for a few years around 2006 and so. He began to suffer very poor health that caused him to withdraw and disappear. We never knew what happened to him. Does anyone have info on what he was doing those last years? I can't even find an obituary.
He was the national sales manager for Retro and then he was involved with some guitar companies. He was also working with Alta Moda and with me with Fredenstein.
@@fantastictalesofproaudio2391 Appreciate the info. We worried his health kept him from working. He loved being part of the community.
He did
you are so righ!
Thank You!
Yes! Very wise words, new producers should try. Thank you for your posts and content!
You are so welcome!
Fairly Simple 😂 Who’s Paying the Storage Fees All these Years For this so-called Lost Storage space 😮 ??? I Call, “(BULL CRAP)” on this story 😊
So you think Gamble and Huff could not afford to pay for the storage...
Quick question: Is Wu-Tang Clan something I should just go ahead and fuck with? Asking for a friend.
Its all about the music
Yes it is
The only summing mixer I can see being useful is the Undertone Audio one. It's fully passive allowing you to use any preamp to color the audio. I agree though most companies summing mixers are a money grab. Always trust a blind listening test.
YES...trust your ears
That man knew what sound he was chasing and knew how to get there 😊
Yep
What would be your suggested tube compressor on the two buss.
DW Fearn VT7 has a magic to it. Also the Retro gear never disappointed.
Thank you again :)
My pleasure!
I use a summing mixer so that I can split the mix into 4 buses (usually drums/bass/insts/vox), each with different outboard inserts, apply different amounts of tube gain to each, and optionally run through transformers, before summing to my 2-bus chain. So in that sense, a summing mixer makes a big difference to my workflow and sound, but yeah in terms of _pure_ summing, with all that stuff bypassed, it would be pointless for me.
In terms of pure summing, with all stuff bypassed, it is pointless.
wow I love the fern gear, amazing
The best!
Thanks for sharing George!
Your welcome
Way out of my league, but I've been admiring those units forever.
Great units!
Me too! Hazelrigg ( who make Fearn) make a whole other line of more affordable based on the Fearn. Amazing stuff, cannot talk up the comp enough. Now they got 500 series too
@@DR-es5ey Oh wow, will definitely check that out. Thanks for the tip!
DW Fearn / Hazelrigg still make the DI now called the VDI, about half the price it used to be. It’s amazing, a real sleeper for studios/live sound . Fearn and hazelrigg both still make the best gear over anyone today. The Pulse Width Modulation compressor is just heaven
Great stuff!
The second (circa 1972) Electrodyne console at 212 sounded amazing.
Yes it was
They have the giant room high ceilings
Nice!
@@fantastictalesofproaudio2391 recording drums in there orchestra gospel quire really anything a vocal track would have bin fun u get all the close mics set up however after that and the normal room mics then sum one has to put the stereo directional condenser mics maybe a set of super ribbon mics , ya get up on a ladder in there and get the super far room mic placement so we can bring that back up in the control room and mix it in under all the close mics to give it extra de-mention in the mix like i had said must have bin fun in there ( i used that teck neek on a rock bands bass cab close mic-ed the crap out of it had sum mics a little bit away also had the direct box mixed in for the super close direct sound but i had the bass amp cranked up shaking the room and on a angle so it was blasting bottim corner of the room to top corner of the room , so on a ladder i put up the russian octova hand picked stereo condenser pencil mics which get down to 20 hrts so they have good low end so they can also pic up a bird flying a mile away so a giant bass wave coming at them blasting around say 35 feet distance, with this method this room mic on the top corner of the room was picking up the far field bass wave it was all blasting into the top corner like that , so it was like 12 mics or so and the direct all mixed together and i had the bass sound from hell in the control room with all the out board gear the console ect,. so phatty i tracked the record then the band took the tapes and wanted to mix it themselves they could have bin rock stars and the record was never mixed or released the thing sounded better then led zepplin )) .. /there were a few places,, studios , that had this kind of giant room thing going im not totally sure like how needed it is in a recording studio atmosphere, but its all - ways impressive ,. a drummer looking for that big fat warm john bonham type sound i just think it gives lots of options to play with all the studio gear and mics for picking up the sound its the kind of thing musicians would gravitate to ,. no lack of space in there ,.. cheers
the Fearn effect. legendary.
Yep
love your channel. i have a pair but according to a pink noise read showing a massive 5-7db dip around 2.5k. Kinda freaking me out. haha
Thanks for sharing
I had the 8816 for many years, recently pulled up old stems ,summed through it to compare with my current interface ...well ...can't really tell and I just sat there not wanting to believe it but ....lol
;-)
Serban we need a Mix with the Masters series
Who knows - maybe one day...
It would be great if somebody who knows him suggested to him Mix with the Masters. Surely his ears are petrified of hearing over compressed and too many plug-in mixes when he turns on his radio. His approach with headroom and natural tone saves our ears.
I know him well and he hardly has time to breath with the work load he constantly is obliged to do.
Thanks for sharing this history!
Glad you enjoyed it
absolutely love your stories! Thank you so much for sharing!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Any notable songs that they mixed there?
I don't know
The infamous SPL Machinehead, hiding in plain sight. Glad make believe made the plugin 🔥🔥🔥
Cool plug in
