Freebird is a 2006 56 Carver Voyager and our home port is in Chattanooga, TN. In May of 2024 We started our second attempt leaving to do the loop backwards. We spent our first year cruising The Tennessee River and prepping for our first long range trip up to the tip of Michigan. We left April 1, 2022 and headed up the rivers to Michigan, spent the summer up there and then cruised back to Chattanooga arriving back 7 months later on November 1, 2022. In May of 2024 We started our second attempt leaving to do the loop backwards. Please Subscribe. Thank you!

May want to consider asking permission to film as these boats some whom are shoving Red Flag barges are covered under Homeland Security Act can instigate an issue with being filmed. But, the content is excellent, and AIS is vital in the operation of our vessels and could be helpful to you. In saying that knowing the Rules of the Road as an operator of a power driven vessel if the responsibility of all vessel operators. As a Towing vessel Captain we want to respect your navigation and safety of your vessel as well as ours. Happy travels, the 1 whistle is port to port, 2 stbd to stbd, and when overtaking you are the burdened vessel, the overtaken vessel is the stand on.
Thanks for the information. Since this video we have travelled the river from Chattanooga to Michigan again. At this point we are pretty good at navigating and communication for passing. The cost of AIS for us since we probably will not do the rivers again isn't in the cards. The costs to owning a boat and servicing it is emptying out pockets quickly!
You guys make these videos so nice. The lil mrs. & i can't wait to see these places for ourselves.

Thanks Ed and Maureen... more great locations along Lake Michigan. When you settled into Suttons Bay, there was a view overlooking a smaller inlet with some boats docked along its narrow sides. I think you were having lunch at a restaurant overlooking this view. In the water beneath there was some kind of flow. At first I thought it was propwash, but then realized it was running water. Was there a spring or stream there? With the water so clear, it is usually an indication of an artesian spring that displaces the regular lake water. Also, with the bay water protected from wind, the shore waters don't get silty with bottom debris. That would also allow the shore water to be so clean looking. Very nice to see. Although, I love the sunny side up, those overcast days at these bay towns, are very iconic. I noticed you enjoyed the environment, in spite of the wet weather. Although you have a cabin cruiser yacht, it just seems that when you're out on the water or docked in an area, there is just too much you want to see and do that hanging out in the comfortable cabin of your cruiser is not what is desired. Would that be correct? Gord
Hello Gord, The restaurant is The Cove. It is located above the Leland Dam at the head of Leland's Historic Fishtown. Ed's brother Bill picked us up and we all had a nice meal there and walked around the town. We like to take a walk and explore the area each day that we are in port. Our cruiser is comfortable on rainy and cold days and hot days. One of our favorite things to do is sit in out chair on the back in the evening and enjoy a good sunset. Have a good weekend!
@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop Thanks Ed and Maureen... that explains the source of the water. Glad you take the time to relax on your cruiser. Viewers only get to see what you show. But that's your private time and we don't see that. Have a great weekend as well...😀 Gord
@@gorrdd It is a great little town. I love visiting there. There is also a DNR marina in Leland off Lake Michigan. That water over the dam comes from Lake Leelanau.
@@samagee1 Thanks Sam... I appreciate the input. It seems like there are many really great little towns and villages along Lake Michigan that cater to the marine clientele. It's such a treasure. I wasn't aware there were so many neat places to visit. And I gather it just goes on and on into Lake Huron, Georgian Bay, through the other lakes and down the St Lawrence into the Thousand Islands... 😮😊 Gord

@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop We traveled down to Michigan City leaving South Haven. So, glad you posted videos of you traveling up through Illinois. Your Channel is very helpful. We just left Biloxi heading west to Texas. Our daughter will be getting married in the spring so we decided to skip going back to Key West (what were thinking it's cold here) and stay close to home. @@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop we will cross in Key West next December. Then off to the Bahamas in April 2026. Hope to see you on our travels
Great subject, Ed. Things can change so suddenly on the lakes. Like you showed, one moment it is clear skies and idyllic... and then in 30-40 minutes the sky turns dark gray followed by gale conditions. I loved the way you showed the approaching storm on your onboard radar system. These storms pop up out of nowhere and you may need advanced warning to get to safe harbor. As long as you're at the helm, all is accounted for. But let's say you anchored out for the afternoon and you're not watching the radar in the area. Next thing you know, it's on top of you with little time to out run it. I watched an interesting video of a convoy of 40' yachts that got caught in a localized gale on their way back from the Bahamas. The tactic the lead pilot used to navigate the storm was great. He needed to cross through the storm with the least impact on his vessel and passengers. He changed headings so that he rode the storm at an angle, going with the swells as quickly as conditions and his vessel would permit. He did this for over an hour until he managed to push through into calmer waters and then changed his heading back toward his destination. There are some vessels that are more designed and equipped to handle these conditions. Express cruisers with a SeaKeeper that have ample power to go 60+ in good conditions, can often cut through the big swells at an angle and ride mostly the tops going 35-40. Of course, it just depends on how big the swells are. But at the right speed, with the right angle of attack, a good gyro system, and not too big swells... it's amazing what can be done that other vessels simply can't handle. They are left behind bobbling and taking on water from the constant dunking and spray... and likely suffering from sea sick symptoms after too much exposure. I grew up in Cleveland, OH and remember the warnings and reports of people and pleasure boats going down from these instant storms on Lake Erie... Which is a more shallow lake, capable of generating treacherous swells. Gord
Hi Gord! We were glad that we were safely in port that day. The Great Lakes are nothing to mess with. We always have an eye on the weather and stay another day if it doesn't look promising. Take care! Ed and Maureen

@@paulbetka6477 WE will watch it! Thanks!
Interesting that you mention the "plethora" of bugs (I take it mosquitos) again. When living up North the bugs on the screens in Wisconsin would block out the fading sunlight. When we moved to Florida (Bug State, allegedly) we never had that problem. Yes, some mosquitos but not at all like up North. I don't use bug repellent at all.
It was actually some kind of flies by the thousands! Attacked us as we drove. Someone told us they hatch out on the lake. They were biting flies! They were horrible!. The lasted for a few days and took forever to kill on the boat. I don't think ever ran across one mosquito in Michigan. Flys and Fish Flys and some kind of fruit flys.
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop In Wisconsin it was mosquitos. Along the beach here we have "no-see-ums" which are definitely annoying.
@@cestmoi1262 We remember those from Florida and Savannah! Do not miss them at all!!!
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop Maybe we live in different worlds or it just could be like real estate: location, location, location: I am sure living in a populated area has something to do with the lack of bugs. (luckily).
@@cestmoi1262 Yes, I guess there are some king of bugs bugging us everywhere!
Thanks FB... another beautiful bucket list location on Lake Michigan. These places are so iconic in their own way, that they deserve a few days stay to just enjoy the atmosphere. I think it's great that you have a dinghy to get around in, once you arrive at such a location. I can see it makes the trip so much more diverse from the water side. Lake Michigan rarely is that calm. I wonder if that had something to do with the fisherman all getting their limits so early in the day. I suspect it did. Great places to eat, for sure. Would have been nice to see some of the views from the elevated boardwalk.😎 Gord
Hi Gord, Thanks for commenting. Glad you are enjoying following along!😃
@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop Thanks FB. I enjoyed hearing of the davit issue from Ed and how it was resolved. These vessels are definitely two men operations for the exact reasons Ed stated. Yes, you can run it with just one person. But in this size vessel, it's just not safe enough. Someone needs to be at the helm at all times when the engines are running. Look at the cascading issues that happened just because the davit cable jumped the pulley. Fortunately the cable wasn't damaged. The davit hoist really needs a more fool proof cable guide, so that this doesn't happen so easily. Gord
Have you ever replayed your YT videos? Your commentary is no more than a voice in the background (first half) when it should be the most understood sound. You have a beautiful voice. Let it shine.
Sorry about the background noise. There is a lot of noise from the boat and the wind when you are out there. We try the best we can to reduce that but sometimes we just can't.
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop Not trying to be negative but making you alert to when things aren't "up to snuff".
@@cestmoi1262 We looked it over and there are parts that the voices are quiet. Really only a small perecentage. I have a few programs that help but they are not perfect so you will notice there is music in part of it and no voices because those videos were not reparable. The noises of the engines on the boat and the wind noise are hard to compete with, even with a microphone. I have tried programs that supposedly remove the background noise but they do not seem to work. They make the voice cut in and out. Will keep trying. If you know of any tricks, please let me know.
That can't be Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan is never that flat. O_o Hello from central Michigan.
It is amazing the diifference between calm days and wild days! I lay down all the lamps and prepare just in case every time.
So what did Ed do for a living? So I can tell my kids what career to go into. Because thats amazing boat.

So glad to see some homies on here. We live in Chattanooga and went through the Chickamauga lock on a friend's boat last summer. Safe travels!
Love Chattanooga! We will be back with the boat when done travelling!
If you drop anchor and take a dingy ashore. Where to you keep the dingy and do most the marinas charge to tie up such a small boat?
Not usually. Most marinas and restaurants, at least in Michigan have free dinghy docks. Some of the towns have public docks also, like Saugatuck.
@19:00 the sounds of the water hitting the boat would be very soothing to me If I owned a boat as beautiful as yours.
One of the best things about boating: Hearing the waves and water sounds.😄
This lady is cracking me up, in a good way. I live in Holland and have frequented Sagautuck's downtown especially the bars mostly on Independence Day weekends. What cracks me up is her critique of the subdivision, that is basically the way W. Michigan is. BIg houses on a few lots compared to more smaller homes on smaller lots. People around this area seem friendly but they definitely love their space to themselves and don't like alot of neighbors, if they can help it. Especially down near the water.
Glad I could give you a laugh. I came in the boat after that video and told Ed I probably wouldn't post this video! I was rambling on about stupid stuff. But then when I put them all together I thought, what the hell. 😁
Beautiful area, beautiful yacht!

So.. question. Do all the marinas charge per foot? What is the average per foot cost? And this is per day?
Yes, as far as we know, they all charge per foot. The cost depends on the part of the country you are in. Florida and some of the East Coast are the most expensive. Michigan averages around $1.75 per foot. Tennessee River is about $1 a ft. We have heard $6-8 per ft in Florida and even more in New York City. And yes, this is per day. We try to anchor as much as possible to cut down on the costs.

@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop I've always been drawn to the water. I live on a small river now. Canoes only LOL
These are very large bulbus birds that will steal your fish when you're not looking. Sometimes they will steal them right off your line after landing them.😮 Gord
Bird watching is one of our favorite things to do!
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop Yes, I just wanted to give you the inside scoop on pelicans! They have a gullet that never quits. Gord
@@gorrdd Nice to hear from you Gord!
So cool! Very jealous
Thanks for watching.
My Grandfather Paul J. Beebe Sr. rebuilt Saugatuck in the 1970's!
That's pretty neat! I hope you get to spend time in Saugatuck! It's one of our favorite towns!
Thanks for sharing the stops along the way. Its great to see what the harbors look like and what is in town.
Thank you for commenting! We started doing this so we could save our adventures to watch when we are old and sitting in our rocking chairs. It has been a pleasant suprise that so many people are following along and enjoying our videos!😀
FB, I enjoyed seeing this next visit after South Haven. Again, another really nice vacation port off of Lake Michigan. I was wondering how your Carver would do in the five foot swells. Without some real speed and a gyro, you will tend to rock and roll rather than lunge from swell to swell. That's why I like express cruisers and especially the Boston Whaler with their foam filled hull... no drumming on the waves... much quieter. But EC's just don't have the room like you have on a bigger yacht. Tight living quarters... but the speed and time saved on rough waters makes up for allot of sins... 😊 Gord
Hi Gord, We can get her up on a plane and get going if it gets rough and it makes it a much smoother and quick ride. Freebird can go up to 30 mph. But she drinks a lot of diesel so we don't do it that oftern.
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop Indeed, FB. Twin diesel inboards are thirsty critters. Filling up those enormous fuel tanks is definitely going to set you back a ways. Glad to hear that it smooths out on plane. Looking forward to seeing more of your destinations this past summer... on Lake Michigan and through the other lakes. Were you able to steer clear of Helene on your way around? West Coast Florida got smothered with sand and waves. Most of the construction on the Keys along the intercostal, from Ft. Meyers all the way up to the panhandle were smooshed out. You will need to plan accordingly. Gord
@@gorrdd Thanks for the warning. We have decided to not head down to Florida this winter due to the destruction and not wanting to take up marina space from those that are residents who need it. Stay tuned for future plans after the summer.
