My Story, Alan Beech
I know from my personal experience that one person has the power to change your life - a mentor, a guide, or a coach can have a profound impact on your life and thus impact the lives of those around you.
Today, I’m a business coach specializing in helping automotive shop owners improve their performance and achieve their goals. When a business comes back to health it’s not just the owner that is affected, it's their family, it’s the staff and their families, it's their suppliers and their families. A lot of people’s lives are improved when a business comes back to life.
I had people in my life that helped me. This is my turn to give back.

    I cant believe this clown. This guy is looking for a way to make money without having to really do the work. As your door rates go up, I'm sure so does his service rates do but for what? He may benefit the owners of these shops, but the one who pay the price are the ones that actually do the work. At 25 shops and probably $1000 each, per month, he is trying to run all your shops like they are franchises. If your shop has a competitive edge over another, he will show this to your competitor and now you are all the same, so there is no reason to come to your shop. I wonder if any of the hourly or flat rate mechanics that work for these shops know that their boss is giving a third party company their Personal and private information to be shared with 24 other shops. Things such as performance, personal issues, criminal records or charges and weather or not to hire these people? I doubt it. This guy travels all over to these shops and tells the owners what to pay their techs, I'm pretty sure this is considered wage fixing and is illegal. We all know there is a shortage of techs, but still wants shop owners to treat them like they are a cup of coffee, don't like this one, i will get another one. His philosophy of "slow to hire and quick to fire" says it all! If you have followed this thought process, think how many good techs your company has lost and what you replaced it with. If you are all pooling together to get a better rate on parts, then just do it, why rely on a guy that cost you money to do it. I bet you know you areas and customers better than he does. But with his attitude toward the techs keep treating them the way he says, there will be an "us vs. them" mentality in your shop before you know it. The atmosphere and moral will be terrible. I am thankful that he lists all his clients on his web site, it makes it easy for me and anyone I know to avoid these shops at all cost. Thanks Alan

    Question: $277 on basic tire installation? Can you please break that down for me? I help with a family business in the city of El Monte CA. I charge $30 to mount and balance, most people spit out their coffee and tell me off stating that I'm ripping people off! Making me feel like sh*t by telling me the guy down the street does it for $20 a tire. $80 profit to mount and balance 4 tires, including tire disposal. Keep in mind we are not making any profit off the tire. Most shops here are mom and pop shop, using average of $16,000 to do a basic flat repair, but charging only $15 to $20. One hole in the wall shop down the street from me charges $10!! I charge $30 for a flat repair, I have very good technology and new machinery, yet more than half of my customers tell me off. $20 bucks won't get you into the Disneyland Parking Lot, they charge $30. I don't get how you get a $270 profit margin on a basic tire install.

    The tire manufactures and distributors have long disrespected the dealers. Buy in programs with distributors and manufacture dealer programs are total garage. They give you a $2 per unit spiff on certain models only if you hit certain volume levels; all the while under mining your sells to the guy across the street who may or may not be any program. That's not to also mention that programs will lock the dealer in to terms of service that puts you a disadvantage to the guy who isn't on any programs. I always love it when these tell people tell me to use tires for "up sale" marketing. Given the cost of labor, equipment and other required overhead. I've got a bridge in Arizona I'd love to sell you if you believe that is a great strategy. Tires = Lots of stress and work with no Reward.

    Everything he said is too much bs just to sell tires, listen everyone it’s NOT worth it. At least not anymore. There is no money in selling tires. After taxes and tire disposal fees, paying your employees and the insanely competitive market you’re left with shit. It’s too much stress for no money. He mentioned selling alignments and all that other bullshit, what he failed to mention was the price of an alignment machine. It’ll take you years to pay that thing off. Don’t do it.

    No matter how well you take care of customers there are some people that you cannot please! A woman called my dad one day and told him that she needed a starter. She said the car will not crank and wanted us to just put a new starter on he car. We checked the battery and it had plenty of power. But, that white and blue crust on her battery terminals was legendary! She also had one or both terminals were bad. So, we changed 2 battery terminals and cleaned up the corrosion off the battery. My dad charged her $20 and she left. We could have done the same thing but also change the starter. She would have never known but God watches us. It would be impossible for us to.do that kind of work and sleep at night! That is why we refuse to do such. Also, if I ever found out an employee had done anything like this, they would be fired on the spot! It feels good that after 21 years of business that we have built enough trust that most customers don't even want an explanation. Some want estimates and some tell us to do whatever it needs. It makes me very happy to be trusted! I am far from perfect in my lord's eyes still. We still have our fair share of those who you just can't please. We quit working on Saturday and that made several customers very angry. We are getting older and need more rest than we use to. 20 years we gave customers our Saturday but we just can't do it anymore.

    Heck yeah, I must have saved a fortune! My truck is a 2000 year model. It has been paid off for many years. I can't see spending a bunch of money just to see it lost $5,000 or more as I leave the car dealership! Oh, it also helped me have no house payment since that is paid off, lol! It is about time to finally give in and buy one though :)

  • @MichaelWilliams-xs3bj
    @MichaelWilliams-xs3bj 3 года назад

    I agree with the video! I try to ask extra questions! Whomever said the customer is always right has to be an idiot! As a customer to my doctor I can prove this. My left wrist swole up about 3 years ago. Mr know-it-all had the doctor to give me a shot of cortisone. He tried to ask questions but I just knew it was tendinitis. He said ok and gave me the shot. I had had many shots in my knees and shoulders of cortisone. I figured it would improve after the shot. Oh man, that was a huge mistake! About 30 minutes later I was at home on my sofa screaming in pain. So I thought I must have had a flare up. Cortisone can cause painful flare ups but I was wrong. I went to see an orthopedic surgeon and found out that I had multiple ligament tears and a tfcc tear that was large. He also found a bone issue. I had to have a terrible surgery that ended up with bone being removed from my wrist and 5 ligament repairs. Missed 2 years of work for that surgery and the worst pain of my life after surgery. The customer has no clue of what they need. We customers are sometimes idiots or ignorant of information! Doctors had to go to college for several years to aquire the knowledge to diagnose problems. Customers want to describe as best they can what the issue is. It is our job to process and ask more questions. We like to take the customer out into the bay and show them the problem. We also give free estimates on any work if the customer is worried about prices. Most of our customers just tell us to fix it at this point. I don't see how some shops do shady things to get work! Most of those guys are gone in this area! Word of mouth can be the best or worst advertising for a company so never sell a customer anything that they do not need. We all make mistakes and have replaced the wrong part but the intentional stuff will take you down so avoid at all costs!!!!

    I would think that the electric cars are gonna break just like the cars of today. It will be sad when the last v8 fires up!! It reminds me of that movie, I robot. Will Smith had the only gas powered vehicle left and it was a motorcycle! Hollywood scares me because they predit the future very well!! 5g along with smartphones and other devices are like skynet on terminator movies. The only place Hollywood seems to be wrong is that there is a God and the return of Jesus! I am living proof that God exists! I tried to end my life several ways and God would not let me die!! I did some really stupid things as a late teenager on through the 20's and even 30's. God changed the heart of the worst man to ever live and filled my heart with love. Great video about the future of the electric mistake that we have to get ready for!!

    Hey Alan! My dad and my mom bought a tire shop December 1999. I knew nothing about tires at the time but I knew I wanted to work for my family and myself. I never liked other employees attitudes at any job I had up to this point. I absolutely hate when someone said, " I am here for 8 hrs so I don't get in a hurry"! These same employees always use to gripe about not being paid enough by whatever company i was at. Every company I ever worked for I gave it my all to complete as much work as possible. I was highly motivated to earn my bosses as much as humanly possible! I always hoped that would lead to me making more money on my check. Most employees just seem to do the minimum and complain that the company doesn't pay them enough. I grew tired of that mentality. That motivated me to have my own business or at least family owned! I am 47 years old and have had less than 7 jobs my whole work career and never drew an unemployment check. If I left a job I always had a new one lined up first. For the last 21 years I have worked for my family and myself. We own a company called Blue Ridge Tire Co. Inc. We live in a city called Lenoir, NC. This use.to be called the furniture capitol of America. Those jobs are mostly gone now. Luckily for us Google built a large facility in Lenoir. Our city is growing fast! Restaurants are moving in and many other businesses. There is a lot of money to be made here as it grows larger. Google is about to begin another massive data center here. I have been told by a reliable source that Google plans to make Lenoir the largest data center in the world! Lenoir will be a much larger city in the next 5 years and has grown a lot in the past 5 years. When my dad bought a tiny tire company in 1999 we had no idea that this city would grow so fast. We never advertised in 21 years but we stay super busy!! There is a problem in Lenoir right now though. Almost everywhere you look is a now hiring sign! The labor sector is very volatile in 2021. We lost 2 employees this year so far. I hate to say it was a good thing but it was. That same " I am here for 8hrs" attitude! Anyway, I just came back to work 3 weeks ago. I was out 3 years due to injury. I love to get in the action and help keep the customers happy!! Heck, I still run road calls in our service trucks. I work myself to the brink of injury everyday! When I work harder I notice that the other employees work harder and smile more. A few years back we had 7 or 8 total employees and went over $1 million in sales. Only 5 employees were in the shop at that time. We don't have big city prices so that is why I feel that was a big number. I believe we could do over 1.5 million in sales if we could just find help. I hope the government will quit giving money away soon. We have had a now hiring sign up for 3 weeks and 1 application just yesterday. Luckily, it was a great application and we are planning on starting him very soon! I love the tire business but my dad is 70 years old and his health has declined some. We hope to sell out or rent the building when he is ready. I think my dad wants to retire by early next year! Since nothing is cast in stone yet, I am treating our shop like it will be open for 25 more years. I am for sure that once my dad is done then I will be right behind him!! The only way I would stay for a bit longer would be for transition period, if that were even needed. I am going through your videos to see if I can learn anything that i may not know. I don't know everything and always willing to learn new things about business. Sorry for the bookni wrote here, lol! Thanks for the video and i will look for more to watch

    Hello sir! My family owns a tire shop in a small/medium sized city. We could never make $277 a set profit for one set! The local competition sometimes drops to $10 above cost per tire and no labor added either. And , he rotates for free!!! Oh, I miss took your profit chart. The beauty of being in the automotive business is that the average person doesn't take care of their vehicle. People may think you're just trying to sell them things they don't need... but most of the time when a car comes in for one thing you can spot 3-5 other things it needs done as well. Either because the customer just doesn't know it's something that needs to be maintained or because like most people they excel and pushing things off well past when it should be done. Though I will say a lot of shops will say you need a service done, because by manufacturers guidelines it's due, but the service could actually be pushed off a little longer as those guidelines are often shorter intervals than they should be. Like changing oil every 3k miles. You can get 5k easy on even basic oil these days.
