Building A Death Trooper Helmet and Failing, but Learning Along the Way (Star Wars Prop Build)

---------------
I spent these last two weeks building a Death Trooper helmet with lights and sound! This build started off pretty easy going, but the details quickly took up more time than I had expected. As with each build I take on, there were a few firsts. This was my first time assembling a helmet that was split into multiple large pieces and required prep, paint, and assembly in different stages depending on the piece.
This led into another major first for me since this was also my first time painting a large surface area with gloss paint. As most peopl...

    Rust-Oleum paint is the worst, and most of your paint related issues is because of it. You can follow their instructions to a T, but it'll still ruin itself. Duplicolor makes a much better paint. Some people don't like it, but unlike Rust-Oleum, it actually dries, instead of just feeling tacky forever.

    My father always told me “measure twice, cut once” when it comes to woodworking, an approach that can be easily adapted for anything. Including situations like this! Fortunately it’s a prop, or rather a costume. I used to work in the film industry making stuff like this. You’d be amazed how often mistakes like yours happen! But you roll with it. So the paint finish doesn’t come out how you like because you mistook layer and enamel….great, now it’s authentic weathering! Or battle damage even! You roll with the mistakes and adapt! 😂 It’s like Adam Savage says a lot of “hiding the crimes” with weathering or other things goes on! 😂

    • @brungerbuilds
      @brungerbuilds 4 дня назад

      Sorry about that! Usually I mention it. I used 150 grit for heavy removal and then switched to 220 once i got closer to the surface of the helmet. Then 220-400 on the filler primer.

      @thecia9051 4 дня назад

      @@brungerbuilds thank you. I’m working on a few project right now and swapping between using plain filler bondo, the heavy Dudy bondo that’s 2 parts and wood filler. Do you recommend wood filler the most?

    • @brungerbuilds
      @brungerbuilds 4 дня назад

      I imagine bondo is probably much tougher if you were to be wearing armor or a helmet all day at a convention or something like that, but since most of my stuff is just going on a shelf I use wood filler since I don’t want to have to worry about the toxic dust from bondo. I still wear a dust mask when I sand, but its nice not worrying so much about it floating around my garage

  • @crazylegsmurphy
    @crazylegsmurphy 5 дней назад

    I think the mico-bubbles are a result of not allowing the previous layer(s) of paint to flash off long enough. The result is that as the layers before attempt to release the gas, they get trapped by the layer above causing bubbles. You can reduce this by allowing the layer to dry 10-15min (depending on temp) before the next layer goes down.

    • @crazylegsmurphy
      @crazylegsmurphy 5 дней назад

      As for tape. Frog Tape brand makes a "delicate surface" type that is much less sticky. I'm sure other brands have similar tape as well.

    • @brungerbuilds

    Hey Brunger, if you have a bit of down time check out WLED it is an open source ESP32 (mini arduino type controller) code that allows control the LED's via a phone or home assistant. With a bit of extra work (not sure if you can be bothered) you can also make it audio reactive. You can run the ESP32 with any NeoPixel LED set. All this allows you to change the color of the LEDs to exactly what you want or change it for different effects, and is pretty easy to install. But I guess if you're happy with the device you've been using, you've been doing a banger job nonetheless! Great Job!

You then use a file, knife etc to scratch down to the metallic layer. It gives the scratch, weathering a more organic look.

    I know it's counterproductive, but I wish more connectors were unnecessarily complex like this. Like, USB is a neat protocol, but I love the haptic feedback of, like, a nice M12 or GX16 connector that people sometimes use on custom keyboards. Also, I think the imperfections of the overspray on the stencil isn't a bad thing at all. If anything, it conveys the feeling that this was done on a factory line by underpaid Sullustans; not like they'd care much for the quality of the paint job as long as it was legible enough.

    This was a very visually stunning project with next level weathering application! Quite impressive in finding the counter rotating moving parts as well as excellent execution of most of that... Now for the "other part"... You did a relatively good job with integrating the electronics that you used, however you could have ratcheted the whole project up a few notches by biting the bullet and learning a bit more of the electronics. There are many possibilities available that are really pretty easy to use and there are also programming languages that are little more than dropping operational "bricks" into place and telling them how long or number of times to run. There are also various magnetic and roller type switches that would have worked better without adding friction to the moving parts. With a little more thought, you could have also set it up to be more secure by adding contacts in certain places so only placing and turning the Droid SCOMP in the right places would allow the box to open using a simple servo. Overall, a bee yoo ti ful build with impressive attention to detail! I encourage you to keep at it and keep adding new skills to your "toolbox". <Subscribed>
