    I wonder what Ford did to those cars to keep them from overheating during the climb? Those flathead V8's were notorious for overheating in the best of conditions. It makes me question how "stock" they were, LOL.

    • @timdailey2571
      @timdailey2571 2 дня назад

      By 1934, Ford had solved much of the overheating of the earlier cars. I’ve run flathead V8’s for over fifty years, and they rarely overheat at speed, usually only in parades or city traffic in extremely hot weather

    • @kensmithgallery4432
      @kensmithgallery4432 2 дня назад

      Another factor is the altitude in general. Cooler temps for sure the higher you climb. I think the temps drop 2.3 degrees for every 1000' of elevation gain or something like that.

      @@timdailey2571 -- Not to my understanding. Ford was still using the old primitive water pumps up until the 1948 8RT. By the way, when you say "early cars", 1934 was an early car with a flathead V8. Remember, Ford came out with this engine in 1932. Considering how Ford routed the exhaust through the water jackets and was using the older primitive water pumps in 1934, and running 4,000 rpm up 12 miles of mountain, I'm a little skeptical of the "stock" claim.

    • @ironcladranchandforge7292
      @ironcladranchandforge7292 2 дня назад

      @@kensmithgallery4432 -- However, according to the video they are maintaining 4,000 rpm. This is still the early V8 design with the primitive water pumps. Ford didn't upgrade to their better water pumps until the 1948 8RT engine. Considering how Ford routed the exhaust through the water jacket and the older, and lower flow water pumps, I find the "stock" claim dubious at best. Constant 4,000 rpm climbing up 12 miles of mountain in a flathead? I don't know.......🤔

    • @timdailey2571
      @timdailey2571 2 дня назад

      Perhaps I should have phrased it “earlier cars”, there were improvements over the ‘32 & ‘33 (especially the casting issues of the initial ‘32. The water pumps were not at all primitive, in fact they often were too efficient, drawing the water through the block so fast that it didn’t have time to cool in the radiator. Without spending too much time in detail, the problem is that exhaust passages from the center cylinders runs through the water jacket. This was Ford’s compromise to make the first low cost V8 - not perfect, yes - but good enough to change the landscape of performance in a low priced car, and the basis for many a race car, experimental car, etc. , not to mention a good portion of cars & trucks on the road. plus, remember that an awful lot of time has elapsed, and the cars and engines have seen many a mile and the march of time. I have restored cars for customers who owned and driven them when they were new, and had no idea that some considered the V8 as an engine that would overheat - they never experienced that issue. They were “late model cars” then.

    Quite apart from tariffs and protectionism or the lack thereof, in 1948 it was physically no harder to load a crated CKD kit ("Completely Knocked Down") onto a ship than a completed car. Sometime in the 1960s that changed with oceangoing "Ro-Ro" (roll on, roll off) ships where cars completed to the point of being drivable can be, and are driven on board and driven off just as they would be from a river or lake ferry.

    Built between 1917 and 1922, the Fordson tractor advanced mechanized agriculture away from draft horses and mules (such as the Ford Model T advanced transportation). In order to consolidate its core automotive businesses, Ford sold its tractor operation to FIAT in 1991. Under the arrangement, New Holland was allowed to use Ford branding for a limited time until around the year 2000.

      Thanks Andy. I actually did that along with 2 earth magnets, one in the fuel bowl with a Wix filter and one in the carb fuel bowl. I can tell you this. I ended up pulling the tank and sealing it. Pure rust is not very magnetic, and my tank was so bad that magnets were nothing but a band aid over an artery. While the magnets did grab some rust, it still made it to the carb. Everyone's results can and will be different, but sealing the tank for me was the solution. Thanks for your comment and for watching. BTW, I did a series of videos on sealing the tank if you haven't seen them yet. I was very pleased with how easy and how professional the results were.

    Ford was nowhere NEAR bankrupt at the time. That's a magnificent lie!! The Company was flush, and Ford himself was rich beyond the stratosphere. Sales were slower due to the Depression, yes, but the Company was in no danger. They had even shut down all the plants completely, to retool for the change from Model T to Model A, that's how strong Ford was at the time. The Model A was very successful. High-priced car Companies were the ones going bankrupt in 1932, not Ford. Ford was picking up some customers who could no longer afford higher-priced cars. Henry was already near completing design and engineering of the V8 when Chevy brought out their new engine. There was no panic at Ford over this. Post-WW2 is the first time Ford had some financial difficulties, when HFII took over leading the Company after Henry Sr became senile and unable to lead things. The Whiz Kids came in and restored the Company's health, while HFII was learning the job.

    Ford Motor Company was likely the most vertically integrated automaker at that time. Henry Ford was so distrustful of vendors and suppliers that he built factories (and purchased groves of hardwood trees and rubber plantations) to produce his own components. In Ford magazine advertisements it was mentioned that vertical integration eliminated the profit of suppliers, thus making the Ford car (the finished product) cheaper for the customer. In reality, it was not necessarily cheaper for FoMoCo to manufacture its own components. Third party suppliers who concentrated on a limited number of components could often be more efficient at production than FoMoCo. The River Rouge plant in Dearborn Michigan was vertically integrated to the extent that raw materials entered and finished cars exited. After Henry Ford passed in 1947, his three grandsons made numerous changes... including using more third party suppliers.

    I’d sure like to walk outside and see a brand new ‘35 Ford V/8 sitting in my driveway.

    He said the V8 had the economy of a 4. Well, not in fuel economy. Those flatheads were strong smooth motors, but fuel efficient they were not.

    "These are not merely claims; we know these statements to be true." Unlike the unfortunate misstatements of previous model years.

    Note Edsel showing his Father Henry the "new " Ford. Transverse leaf springs mechanical brakes & all that good stuff-but at least it could be had with a V-8. That overheated.
