My experience with ATP-CTP airline training at DPS.
To be an airline transport pilot, one of the requirements that must be met is completing an ATP CTP course. The course was created as a result of the 2009, Colgan Air Flight 3407 that crashed in New York, killing 49 on board, and one on the ground. The ATP-CTP class intends to bridge the knowledge and experience gap between a commercial pilot certificate and a pilot operating in a 121 or 135 air carrier environment.
I spent 7 days at Delta Air Lines, in Atlanta, Georgia. Delta Professional Services(DPS) provides ATP-CTP training. 30 hours of ground school, 10 hours of simulator time. Great speakers, Delta Flight Museum access, and other perks were provided as well. It was a great course!

BIRD STRIKE Awareness and AVOIDANCE: SAFETY Guide

Bird strikes happen almost every day. As a general aviation pilot, it may seem impossible to predict a bird strike. But, along with fantastic predictive data, there is a tool available to everyone, to help reduce the risk of bird strikes in commercial aviation, military aviation, and for those of us in general aviation, and it is called: Avian Hazard Advisory System. (AHAS). AHAS, along with re...
Fresh HAZARDOUS ATTITUDES you NEED to KNOW in 2024.
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Hazardous attitudes in aviation are a real thing. The FAA has been encouraging all pilots to recognize and deal with them for decades. They have taken the lives of far too many pilots, passengers, and people on the ground. We need to recognize some of the newer, updated hazardous attitudes and biases that are getting pilots in trouble, increasing risk, and impacting aviation safety. We will go ...

LANDING at the world's BUSIEST AIRPORT in a CESSNA 172
Great job, NB! This was a super informative video, and a really nice recap of your experience. It is no surprise that Delta held a first class ATP-CTP course.
Great summary Nathan! The very best to you on this journey.
Great video. Can you add what the daily schedule was for you during this course? When did the day start and end? How much time did you spend studying after each day was over?
great debrief! I wanna be NateB when I grow up. 16:00 what's the windshear escape maneuver?
Thx! ....Smashing the power to the stops, and basically doing what the FD says.. so not stalling, maintaining sufficient airspeed, and then get away from the ground as soon as practicable.
Amazing video! Super informative
How much for this course?
What a great video, than you so much.
Clear and concise - covered ALL the requirements. I retired as a B767 Captain 24 years ago. There was no requirement for this course prior to taking the ATP written then. Everything you covered I learned AFTER I got my ATP. I think this prerequisite requirement is great.
How many hrs TT u have ? whats yur bio backgrd ? where r u ? ap ? do u have vid on You ?
NB didya see any Aurora n lites ? anybody ? would be great go up at nite try get chance see them over past wkend.. unfirtunately never saw any..suckks
GA q... why does ATC insist making ga ac do 360° circles in pattern trying to land bc of busy traffic w mixed in corp jets .. ofcourse favoring the richazzzjets get all priority to land first. this is Class D .. Does FAA ATC towers do this everywhere now ? or just my area Boston? ithink ctrlrs just be bad and lazy cant separate traffic very good plain lazy and incompetent. Doing 360° turns circles at 1000'agl is very risky dangerous bad bad.. too much going on.. lot of student pilots or ga practicing touchandgos going on. Most stupid unsafe thing ATC could do doing this now alot I hear it 5-10x perday.. some same ac they tell do it 2x in row b4 can land. outofcobtrol .Accident deadly fatal A waiting to happen ATC could easily say extend dw or do S turns or tell jets slow up.. or tell ga ac stay outside classD area will call you and ga can circle at safe 2000'+ away in unbusy sky.. not inside the pattern. ! omg smfh You ever see run onto this any airports ?
Very informative! Thanks for sharing your experience. Subscribed!
I was very glad to get mine there earlier this year. Very convenient and you get some inside info. I’m at 7GA7 if you are ever out and about.
Great video Nathan! Glad you enjoyed the program. Recently retired Delta captain here. The training department is top notch!
Delta has a ATP-CTP course for non employees????!!!
Great job on the video! Super interesting to me to hear what was involved.
Bravo Nathan! What great insight to the ATP-CTP course. I am ready to sign up tomorrow! So cool!
Great video
This is the first time I’ve seen a recap of any ATP/CTP course with this much detail. I really appreciate it since I’ll be attending one soon.
Yes! excellent overview of the course and experience.
I went there in February. Great class!
Thanks bro. That was awesome. Very educational and informative. Highly educational
wow, very humbly.
How did you prepare for the course?
I tried doing some research on YT, but there wasn't a lot out there. The folks at Delta/DPS were great in just making sure you know what to expect. As far as other prep, being instrument proficient will help during the sim sessions.
Great video
How’d you manage to land in that class? I thought Delta’s CTP course was only for their military hires without an ATP?
It is open to everyone, as far as I know. I didn’t see or encounter any restrictions. I just went on the website and registered.
@@NathanBallardSaferFlying good to know!
Nice summary - that would be a fun class to attend! - Martin
Thanks for watching Martin!
Excellent vidéo. Thanks.
Not sure how your channel came up but great job in describing your experience at Delta. Was unclear why you were going through this course or that even Delta offered it but good narrative. I subscribed....retired airline.
Thanks so much for watching, and you will probably appreciate this... The instructors in the class were all retired pilots, and the stories they told were invaluable. I am sure you have many to tell as well! Thanks for subscribing as well.
This is great man as always - you could do an explainer series on anything and I would watch and inevitably learn something.
So... are you thinking of going to the airlines? Or did you take this for your own knowledge and to help prepare your students?
Yes, exploring options to do some professional flying 🛩️
@@NathanBallardSaferFlying Awesome!
How did you skip the regionals and get the ATP with Delta?
He said in the description that he doesn’t work for Delta…
Anyone with $5k is eligible 😊
What an experience! Thanks for sharing….can’t wait to hear about what’s next for you!
Thanks for this Nathan, I will add your video to my Hartford, CT playlist this is very helpful.
Cool thanks! Glad YT sent your channel into my feed - great stuff!
Great video. I’ve been wondering what all goes into ATP.
I had no idea that the autopilot would handle rapid decompression. Pretty cool.
The automation is so crazy amazing, I had no idea is was THAT good! Thanks for watching!
Decision fatigue isn’t making decisions while fatigued. It’s having to make so many decisions that the quality of those decisions decreases.
I have been told and I believe that a pilots license is a license to learn. You never know everything about aviation, your learning all the time.At least, that's what I believe.
Hey, thank you for adding this. I want to add one thing to that for when you talk about having a medical advocate I’m not trying to promote it, but I have the AOPA pilot protection services and they are very great service used to be a medical advocate for you so just wanna throw that out there
Agreed, I am a big fan of AOPA PPS, thank you for mentioning this!

👍✅ Great info as usual Nathan👏
Glad you think so! Thanks for all the support!
This is a great guide, thank you. I'm hoping to get up with my family to give hem great views. One thing I'd add: I really don't think it's a great idea for pilots to be wearing the eclipse sunglasses themselves. See and avoid other traffic, and focus on giving your passengers the safest flight possible!
100%, that is what I meant to say. Now that I re-listen to it, it sounds like advice pilots should wear those glasses when flying 🙈.. thanks for clarifying here! Can't wait to see you pics of the flight!
👍✅ Great observation! (pun intended). But it is an important point Josh.
@@paratyshow I laughed out loud. Thank you for that 😂
Also, when you're training where the sun is out, be aware that buzzards hang out around thermals, and glide between them.
What's crazy is when you're washing your plane the next morning and see blood guts and feathers on the struts, not knowing how it got there yesterday.
Great info! Thanks!
Thanks Eric!

You very briefly showed it at the end, but pilots should know they can send remnants of a bird (feathers, meat, etc) to the Smithsonian for DNA testing. Not only will they tell you what kind of bird you hit, but they can use it to determine if it’s a local species and try to relocate the birds. In my case, it was a bird that spans all of North America (red head duck) so not much that could be done to change their habits.
Such a good point BadgerPilot, thanks for pointing this out. The FAA's strike database is terrific, combined with all the work the Smithsonian Feather Identification Lab, there is a lot to gain for us pilots (and birds) like you said by sending in your samples. I would love to see the report back that you got from them, I am more curious than anything! Thanks for watching!
@@NathanBallardSaferFlying I’ll send it to you!
I was disappointed he didn't use the word "snarge".
Nathan did you ever get the report? I tried sending it via Discord but not sure if it went through
@@thebadgerpilot I did not. You can email if you want to nathanb@saferflying.info. Thanks!
This may be your best video yet. Obviously a lot of production into this so it was visually outstanding. Also this is totally new info that I never heard of before, nor had most others I spoke to. Great content!
Thanks Biff! Appreciate the watch and kind words!
Really well done video! And AHAS is completely new to me, will definitely add that to my preflight planning. Thanks again!
Awesome, glad you liked it and the tool too. 🙂… it’s so useful. See you around the hangars!
I mean it's obvious... don't fly into a bird... and if the bird is sleeping just honk at them :P
“97% of animal strikes involve birds”…. I’d love to know more about the other 3%!
As long as you don't get a worm strike!
Deer probably
Wild hogs? 🐗
