Riding 3 Harley Shovelheads | No music ride to Naples Cars & Coffee
Took a ride to on the 3 bikes I have, all are shovelheads but each one is quite different, not just in style but also years, and how they ride. All 3 of them have different clutch/shifting set ups at that!

Is there anywhere I can see how you mounted the rear fender to work with the swingarm? Is it just mounted into the sissy bar and the rear section of the frame?
You can message me on Instagram and I can send over some photos. The front bottom part of the fender is mounted to the swingarm, then the rear is mounted to the sissy bar which then the sissy bar is mounted to the fender. I have a walk thru video of the bike on my channel here too that you can kinda see it
@ yeah I watched it! I’ll send you a message to get some more photos 🙌🏽 thanks!
I have been through the exact same issue you are having with this clutch and the clearance with a primary cover. I added spacers between the oil bag mount and the lower frame mount and bent the whole primary outwards hah. I cannot fit my derby cover on. Unfortunately my research for a longer belt to actually allow the clutch to be centered in the derby cover also was unsuccessful, BDL doesn't have "longer" belts with the same tooth count. Someone in the comments suggested adding a gasket between inner and outer primary so I will likely give it a shot at some point to see if I can add a derby cover. I also realized even after chasing my lurching clutch issue / grinding from stop or on a hill was really related to my clutch plates being shit. I had done a tamer, long roller clutch hub, and new basket, and the sugarbaby super clutch. None of it resolved that issue. So I ended up getting BDL clutch plates and its never been smoother. My only caveat with the sugar baby clutch is there is very minimal friction zone, its pretty much on or off , but after getting used to it i dont notice it now, foot clutch as well.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Me like !!!!
They say for every one tooth in the front its equivalent to 3 in the rear. Did you ever consider lowering teeth in the rear instead of pulling the primary apart. Just seems easier. Unless you already have like a 48 or 47 rear on.
Not really, since it's a hydraulic drum in back the sprocket it riveted onto the drum, there aren't really options for different teeth and it's way more work
@drmikemerkt ahh i see. I have a 1979 and have a disk rear.
Cool primary cover. I have one just like it on my shovel chopper
Hell yeah! The best primary covers
Awesome scoot, good to know there is more of us shovel owners in Naples, other than Chopper Dave there is only a few of us
Hahah yeah!! If you have instagram give me a follow and we can connect there @mikemerkt
killer bike bro, where you at? Looks like lighthouse point
I’m down in Naples
I would love to know how much $$$ is this project. Looks sick
Thanks! Not too much, a lot of stock parts. I built it 7 years ago now so don’t really know how much I spent. Most expensive parts are prolly the rear wheel/brake, primary cover, and fork lowers
Congrats! Great looking bike. Foot controls are killer
Great video - Love your bike! I see your throttle cable is hidden. How does the throttle mechanism work inside the handlebar?
@@garystahl8137 thanks! It’s a stock panhead/ironhead internal throttle. I got a ride side stock handlebar from one of those bikes and took the internal throttle assemble out of it and transferred it to this set of bars
Hipster
I prefer yuppy but to each their own
itr's not the ankle that's at risc. it's your knees .After 35 years kicking my shovelhead my knees are shot.Lignaments and cartillage. It looks cool and tough but believe me better use an electric starter. I'm rebuilding my kick only to electric this week.
Totally hear what you’re saying! Have you looked into the Indian Larry electric start set ups? We have one on my dad’s 67 flh you’ll see in my videos and it works great! You can keep the tin primary with it
a real beauty
@@sqd37l thank you!
Nice clean lines on that bike. Looks well cared for. 👍
Thanks!!
What kind of seat is on the light blue one?
It’s a custom seat I had made when I built the bike 7 years ago
Florida?
Correct, I’m down in Naples
Now ya need an 81. First year Harley Davidson was back in action out from under amf. Shovel on 💪
You’re not wrong!!
This is the type of content im looking for!!! I want a shovel so bad lol.
Thanks!! Start scouring market place
Camera is fine !!
Hahah thanks! I think so too
@@drmikemerkt by the way I own a78 shovel. Great video and sharp looking Harleys.
@@richardhier3847thanks, that’s awesome!!
Agree! Gives a much better perspective and feel, as if more part of the ride than when the camera is on someone's noggin.
Camera is not in an attractive angle for the viewer, too low!
Thanks for the feedback
@@drmikemerkt Give that man a full refund! 😊
Well, that don't seem right!😂👍
😂😂😂
is that a lowbrow wx split gas tank ?? looks cool !
Correct! Thank you
Buddy seats are like bonds after bikeriders came out
😂😂😂
Great bike!!! what bracket you used to mount to 2 into 1 exhaust? I have the same set up but I’m having trouble finding the right mount bracket for the exhaust
Thanks!! I made a mount for the exhaust
Hi, what fuel tank do you have on your bike? 3.5 or 5 gallons?
3.5
Thanks
carb needs to be leveled.
Correct, it will be level once I actually use it, just wanted to see if the bike would actually start with it before going any further
Very Interesting video. But I will stick with the Mikuni 38 VM Carb on my 83 FXWG.
I would too, one of the best carbs around
Thanks and it has a front brake looks like? I love these bikes, but usually no front brake. Yours has a clean drum look.
Thank you! Yeah it has a front drum off a 70’s husqvarna dirt bike
Subscribed, can not wait for if this is gonna work or not! I consider installing on my Ducati monster 900!
I'll keep you in the loop!
You’d think a Dr would know to actually MOUNT a device that meters fuel before starting it up…
Legitimate comment. At the same time I didn’t feel like spending the money on the oil lines I like if the bike wouldn’t fire. Since I have past experience with the carb on a motocross bike I knew I’d be able to start it with it in the position so I could get an idea if it worked or not. Looks like I achieved what I was going for so…GO ME!
Might i suggest, an intake spacer with 2 bolts on one side, and a short rubber intake boot with proper clamp bands next time before testing? That way you can lever the carb, and get float level correct and jetting correct for that engine👍 Its a great idea though
For sure! Gonna get different oil lines and a Branch intake manifold. With that being said there are no jets in the carb
Right 👍 on brother sounds great nice bike.chops
Thanks!!
heh, heh....

@@jerrybigrig9475 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
I'm interested in seeing where this goes. Definitely need to level the carb, or the float will not operate properly. Good luck!
For sure! Wanted to see if I could get the bike to fire before I went further. Gonna get an old Branch manifold
I love your bike and you have really good energy...You understand the understated, sutle old school look. I wouldn't do my bike the same.If i were to do a project like yours, i would want your expertise ....Fantastic Paint... What kind of Doctor???? Be well God bless you,Enjoy...Thank you .
Thank you, appreciate the kind words! I'm an upper cervical chiropractor
👍🏼 🇺🇸
Hell yeah!
It sucks that you had to ruin the cover to install this thing.
Yeah it did take quite a bit of grinding to make it fix and I ended up spacing the outer cover out on the bottom but it’s absolutely worth it for how well it works
5:57 - That slabside Shovel looks a lot like a bike that I built back in the late 1960s. That's a great road bike. Thanks, Dr. Mike Merkt.
Nice! Really cool bike, yeah what I liked about it is how great it looked but it also looked like you could ride it a lot
@@drmikemerkt That's exactly what we were after back then - rideability. Things didn't get crazy until after Hopper and Fonda's little motorcycle movie. Be safe.
I ran a riviera diaphragm clutch on my 80* and love it….definitely need to try one of these on my 74
Yeah it's a game changer and a pretty ingenious design that's super easy to install
You did a great job
It's not a dirt bike so I wouldn't worry about that air filter. Got something similar on an old sportster i have and it works fine
Understandable for sure
That's a badass chop right there buddy 👌
Thanks! It’s a blast to ride
I like it more manly.
Hahaha
So much nice work on this bike, looks great!
Thanks!
I love vintage Harleys BUT the buddy seat seems to sit too far forward (over the tank) for my liking. As a long legged individual I would feel cramped and with a wrong center of gravity. Did you find you had to adjust your riding style even when riding solo?
When I ride solo I’m definitely sitting more in the middle of the seat
Good stuff 👍 👍 Caleb would probably call that carb the one thousand dollar carb 😝 …at minimum. But yes, still worth every penny of time spent on it considering the alternative. Two questions: 1. What do you, good doctor, think about initially using a sonic cleaner in order to get much of the crud off, thereby lessening the time spent on initial grime removal? Seen the old gray-beard, Pacific Mike, applying the services of his new one to great satisfaction recently. 2. What about just using the nifty little Dremel? It seems as though the Dremel “OEM” collar, utilized on THE actual Dremel would maybe be less of a threat in regards to nicking the surface than that adapter set-up. It somehow seems as though that Milwaukee unit, as nice as it is, is a little more cumbersome to handle for finesse work than a Dremel would be. It’s just a thought. Lookin’ forward to the progression of the slow-build 😎 From Southern California ~ Ride Forever! 🦅
Thanks for the kind words! You’re definitely right in regards to both those points. At some point I’m sure I’ll get an ultrasonic cleaner and an actual dremel would for sure be a bit less sketchy to work with. I debated getting one for this project but since I don’t need a dremel very often I went with the little adapter piece for my Milwaukee tool instead.
@@drmikemerkt Onward and upward! 👍 😎
