249) 2-Night Winter Camp at Mew Lake!
On Friday, January 17th, 2025, right after work, I zipped up to my happy place, Algonquin Park, for a two-night stay at Mew Lake Campground. The first night dipped to only -6°C, but the second night dipped to -23°C! I cooked three different meals over the campfire and hiked four trails which were unbelievably pretty beneath a beautifully thick blanket of snow. This was my first winter camp using my car’s winter set-up, including my Mr. Heater Buddy for warmth. Join me on this wonderful wintry weekend! 🌨️❄️🥰🥾🥾❤️✌🏼

In my previous experience, I often got green wood from the self-serve. I see they also sell kindling now, which would be a big help in getting green wood to start, but the last time I was at mew lake (some years ago now) there was no kindling and i couldn't get that wood to burn with the bits i could scrounge. So if you paid extra in huntville, almost certainly you didn't waste your money, probably even came out ahead.
it's a great video by the way. i've seen a bunch of mew lake camping videos, but most people don't actually get out and do very much. so there are a lot of nice little touches here. i've slept in my car too back in the day, i had a volkswagen golf not much bigger, and yet it was not a good sleep at all. don't know how you manage to fit all the stuff in that space!
I saw your channel listed in the Patreon thanking list in one of Steve Wallis videos. My first time watching your video here and I already love it. Just hit the spot of relaxing and camping genre!
@@Wabbajack-kj2kg Yay! Welcome! I will be posting a new video on Wednesday! I hope you’ve subscribed, Wabbajack! 🥰🙏🏼🫶🏻✌🏼

On batteries and resupply, I've had success hiking with a three-panel solar panel tied to outside my pack. It's slow and you have to manage it against weather but can work if you're having trouble finding outlets. ...or want to keep hiking. Cheers! 🥃<<Fireball in there
@@garagebrewer Hahaha, Fireball! My trail name! Since this time, I have graduated to less sugary whiskeys, ha ha. But, I still very much enjoy my fireside whiskey after a long day of hiking. I hope you’re enjoying the series, Phil! 🥰✌🏼
Welcome back, Ms Christina. Love the winter camping and hiking video. Glad you were warm with your heater buddy.
@@lindaandrews1892 hi, Linda! Did you see that I’m going on tour promoting my book? I know that you’re an author, too. Would love to meet you. Are you located in Phoenix?
@ Yes, I am. If you come, please bring rain
I’m heading to Mew Lake next week with my van. This will be my first camping trip in the Winter. Any tips for me?
I’m excited for you! I’m curious what your van set up is like. Without knowing anything about what you’ve already done to prepare, I would just remind you that layering in wool clothing is of utmost importance. What kind of sleeping bag do you have? What do you use for a heating system in your van overnight? What do you plan to do during the day time? I suggest doing some of the day hikes as keeping moving keeps you warm and the views are absolutely beautiful with all of the snow cover. Have a wonderful time and thank you for watching and commenting! 🥰❄️✌🏼
Thank you so much for your response. I have sent you an email, I hope you don’t mind.
@ That’s why I make my email public! I’ll have a look and respond as quickly as I can! 🥰✌🏼
Oh man, I've been wanting to get to this series. I've seen your repeat hike from 22. Of course you're a pro now but it's fun to see you work through new things and reminisce about similar experiences. Cheers!
@@garagebrewer i’m afraid to even watch the series, I was so inexperienced back then! But I’m also curious myself, ha ha. Anyway, I hope it’s enjoyable for you, Phil! Happy Tuesday! 😊✌🏼
Hi Christina, this was super fun to watch, despite being rough around the edges. For me, this was very reminiscent of my first backpacking trip. A lot of self-questioning and, "am I really going to do this?" I took my whole family and my pack was 40 lb. I had to decide what everyone was going to carry. You should rewatch 7:52 and be proud of how far you've come. Cheers!
OMG I will watch the part you’ve mentioned but I am scared and laughing already. I’m sure I sound quite green and naive, haha! I’m so curious now! Will message again after I watch!
Hahahaha. I’m sure another sip of wine helped with the packing! 😂😂😂
Just got back from Mew Lake after a beautiful sunny Sunday, and after meeting you this weekend decided to check out a video. Was confused until I realized this video isn't from this weekend but the weekend before 🙂. Anyway, looking forward to checking it out, it was soo good to meet you and hope you found your Moose on Mizzy!
@@sbirnstiel Hey, Britney and Curtis! (Did I spell those correctly?) So awesome to meet you both! I admire you guys for knowing it is worth the long drive, even for a day trip. @Womaninthewoods13 Should have left my name, it's Susanne with the Nepali Hoodie, one of the other couples you met 😀

Hi! I'm your newest subscriber! 😊Just wondering if you have any tips for not being scared of bears? I solo hike everywhere except for where there are bears but I am trying to get over my fear.
Bring a whistle and bear spray, stay alert, and just go. You are afraid because you don’t have the experience of being out there (in bear territory). The more you’re out where bears are, the more comfortable you will be. I’ve never seen a bear. Make noise as you walk. You’ll likely never see one, either! I hope that helps! 🥰🥾🥾🫶🏻✌🏼
So happy you posted about the warning tent! I was wondering if it was always available like that.
Yes, the warning tent is always there in winter. At this campground. Next weekend, I am going somewhere else where I don’t think there will be one…but who knows! ❄️❄️🥰🥾🥾🫶🏻✌🏼

Re: Mr Heater Buddy, my understanding is that it has a low oxygen sensor, not a carbon monoxide detector. It shuts off when it detects a low oxygen situation.
@@Atlanta_Cyclist I think you’re right. It amounts to the same thing, pretty much, in the end, I think.
I don't think you needed the bear spray and that was a squirrel not a chipmunk.but that was a very nice video. My wife has camped there, but i never have.
@@herb1553 I don’t think I need the bear spray, either. But better safe than sorry. Also, it’s for intruders “on four legs or two.” Just a smart thing to always have. You start taking it out of the pack and then you forget to put it in when you actually need it. ❄️❄️🥰❄️❄️
My theory is that the pylons are to keep snow out of the fire pits. 31:34 is hilarious, "there are neighbors gasping?", lol. I like the idea of the prepared pots of food, I've never thought of that. Snow hiking was beautiful too. I'm glad to see people getting out, even if it's cold ❄️. Cheers!
@@garagebrewer Haha, well if it’s to keep the snow out, the method is failing miserably! I think it’s just to locate them under all the snow! Ooooohhh, I’m thrilled that you’d never thought of doing prepared pots of food! It really worked out well and I did it again this past weekend. Talk to you again soon, Phil! ❄️❄️😊❄️❄️

Wonderful seeing you again! I was going through withdrawals. This video was lovely with the snow and views. Amazing how quiet it was, so quiet it hurt the ears. I have marked my calendar for March 1st at Indigo in Oshawa. What time should I aim for? I'm booked in for a yurt at Mew mid-April. Check-in is 4pm and out by 10am, which means my 2 night stay will give me one full day at a cost of $354...damn HST was 40.82! ouch. But I wanted to check out a yurt. A fantastic video Christina. I have had a very long and extended time away from spending any measurable time watching videos the past few months. A very busy time for me with family issues, travel, and some other long needed home related projects. It appears that I have returned just in time to see your return also. I did not realize that you too were away for awhile. Anyway, I guess enough of that. Things are back to normal again. I was very pleased to see that you had a video uploaded for me. Thank you for these …they are just right….keep me company on the treadmill. Will be doing GR5 starting late August. Not sure I will finish before the season ends. But we will give it a go. I will be slower than you (73 years old from Okanagan Valley BC. Question …did you need or use All Trails at all? I found it helpful on Pennine Way in May. Really enjoyed Lycian Way on south coast of Turkey ….might be worth some research. How do you drink a beer mid hike ….very impressive
As I did the Tour du Mont-Blanc two times (in 1969 when I was 20, in 1998 when I was 49) I looked with special interest to your videos. Again, it is splendid footage, like your series on the GR10 and GR5. Looking at the videos, it was as if I was walking there myself. Your videos show the essence of hiking in the mountains. In 1969 there we a few other hikers. In 1998 there were many more but not the crowds that I sometimes saw in your videos. There was always place at campings and in refuges. I must say that we both times walked in July which means not in the French top holiday month August, but I have the feeling that the TMB suffers a bit from its own popularity. There are so many other splendid hiking circuits in the Alps, why everybody does the TMB? Your footage confirms my feeling that the TMB is less difficult then other hikes. Both times we did not walk the Arpette variant but in stead the main route over Bovines. The first time we did not climb the famous ladders near Argentière. The second time I did. My opinion is that they look more difficult then they are in reality. A final tought on the snow cap of the Mont Blanc massif. It looks to me that there is less snow and much shorter glaciers. Are we really seeing there the effects of the climate change? It worries me much. I hope to see more trips to Europe in the future. Our continent has much to offer for hikers. A bientôt.
Hello Christina! I hope life is treating you well 😊. I haven't been on YT as much lately but I'm glad to have stopped by & caught this video of yours. So unfortunate that those noisy campers had to be so inconsiderate but I admire your patience & ability to focus on the positive. The night shots, the reflections in the lake were beautiful & the swimming otters were a cute little sight to see 😊. Hope you had a Merry Christmas & if you're in the area next spring/summer maybe we can connect for a mushroom hike! 🍄 All the best, Sharon
