Sea to Summit Ether Light Insulated VS. Extreme review
How strict in your experience do you need to comply with the max carrying weight of 12kg
I didn't know there was a max carrying weight and have gone slightly over (about 15kg including water). Can't say that I've noticed it too much. But it's true that if you're going to carry heavier loads, at a certain point an ultralight pack is going to start working against you.
Love my PR500. I live in the UK and they're not available here because of the carabineer issue 😏 I was fortunate enough to get mine from eBay from someone who'd brought one back from Europe. I've done a long cycle and paddle trip with it and it moves a lot better with the weight of the bike on the front. I've also done some gentle whitewater with it and it's fun. I've got 3 packrafts. This one, an Aquaglide Expedition 85 which I also love and a Biluta. The latter I didn't like so much until I started using it as my sacrificial craft - I've stabbed holes in it several times in order to test different quick fix repair tapes. It's taken a lot of abuse and is still going strong. For me packrafts are expensive play boats. They're great fun on the water and like you say allow you to do things you can't necessarily do with a standard inflatable kayak. I've also got an Aquaglide Cirrus and more recently the Aqua Marina Halve - both ultralight TPU full size kayaks. Both a lot of fun with their lightweight being a boon. Thanks for your comparison between the 2 Itiwit models - great idea 👍😁
What do you think about the tent in 2024?
I think it's still an amazing deal. If I was on a budget and didn't mind the single wall construction, it would be my first pick.
I've owned the 100 for over two years now. I love it. It packs down tiny and lives in the camper with a 5piece paddle, and an inflatable PFD. On calm water you can do 3-4mph no problem and it feels extremely stable. I have used it down a few rivers (2-3), and it bounces off rocks with no issues, the side material just conforms to the obstacles it meets, the bottom experiences the most abrasion, but that is not what keeps you afloat anyway, nevertheless no damage. For the use and fun I have had from it, it is well worth the money👍
Interesting, thanks ! Which one of the two is the more confortable for the lower back -For people, like me having lumbagos ?
The difference isn't huge, but I think the 500 gives a bit more support since it's a bit higher in the back. Plus the rear attachment points for the knee straps could come in handy if you want to retrofit a backrest.
@@BelgianHikers OK thanks

Grtjs uit As.
The lack of a sprayskirt or self-bailer floor is not (just) a temperature issue, in whitewater your raft would fill up quickly with water and you'd need to stop all the time to empty it. It seems like the Itiwit 100 is a good option for flat/slow water and the Itiwit 500.. does not really fit anywhere imho.
Thx for the vid 👍
You seem to be doing a lot of trips with the guys. Some sort of trip video would be fun with some voice over. It’s slightly different than doing reviews I admit.
Well we do have a couple of trail reviews on the channel, those are a bit more vlog-style. The problem is we speak Dutch, so we'd have to put subtitles on everything. Not sure our international viewers would watch that 😅
You just did a review on two chairs that you didn't even sit on.
Haha, I sat on them plenty. The question is: how do you sit in a chair, film yourself doing it, and still have the footage come out halfway interesting.
@@BelgianHikers True 👍
The fan is very loud, not suitable for me. Thanks for the video review though, appreciate your point of view.
I had the Forclaz MT500 air backpack, loved it, thought I wanted to upgrade to an Osprey, so went with the Exos 58, but ngl it feels like a step backwards. I'm very consumed by *proper fitting* gear, and as my back length is 55cm, the MT900 UL seemed to only work to 53 cm. That being said, I think I might end up buying one.
Thanks for the review!
I tried both, the „male“ and „female“ version in a local decathlon store and one of the main differences and the reason I ended up buying the blue version was that the grey-orange version has tighter/ smaller shoulder strap space where your neck is. This space then is shaped more towards the side and gets way bigger on the chest area. So it’s a design choice that I guess fits women better and guys with thicker necks worse. I would have preferred a smaller volume but it just wasn’t nearly as pleasant to carry as the blue version.
Oh that’s great info, thanks! Gonna pin this one 📌
Mine often creaks and occasionally not. I have not yet invested the time to figure it out. I am looking for an additional shoulder pocket for mobile/water. Do you have any suggestions?
Nice review
Altijd goeie content, merci!
i'd get one or two if it's in Rusty Patina Orange
I like how we saw next to nothing from the tent inside and you using it 😅 /s
That’s fair, sorry about that. Always a bit harder to do when you’re filming yourself. I used to take a tripod on hikes but they’re just too heavy 🤷🏼♂️
Seriously, what's with these tent companies making bright coloured tents? Unless I am in an emergency situation, I'd rather not draw too much attention to myself Great review, I just would have liked seeing the pack size
Right, should have included that! Packed size is pretty compact, closer in size to a (traditional) sleeping mat than a tent.
No worries :) Great info
The white fabric is undyed. This is to reduce the impact on the environment during manufacturing.@@BelgianHikers
I think it's probably made for snowy winters
@@Obi-Wan_Pierogi Why can't it be a nice bright happy color if you don't camp wild? And I'm not going to a war.
I'm not seeing it on the Decathlon website in the US but it is great to see them getting into more UL type gear.
It is probably possible, though perhaps more difficult, to set up this tent without the inner. Then it really is a tarp tent.
Yep, definitely possible!
I got mine last week and tried it out over the weekend in my backyard. I agree on the difficulty of setting it up for the first time, it's not the smoothest experience but I guess the second time will be at least twice as fast. I also ordered the MT100 poles and after some tinkering I had a pretty solid setup with the pole at the door side set to 115cm and the backside at 120cm while putting this pole at a slight outward angle, maybe I have a different version of the MT100 trekking poles because my tips fitted nicely in the holes. With my body height of 188cm I had two comfortable nights on my MT500 air XL Minimal Editions mattress and even had a little bit of space to spare at the foot end. Condensation was present but didn't find its way into the inner tent. I'd surely recommend this tent but also strongly recommend to set it up at least once before you hike out into the wilderness :)
Ah, that's weird. The tips on mine are 8mm wide, just too wide to fit. I'm curious how your white-mattress-inside-a-white-tent will look after a few trips 😄
@@BelgianHikers Haha yes me too! I will let you know after my three night trip to the Vosges which I have planned in two weeks. I recently got back into hiking and needed to update my kit. Didn't want to break the bank right away and this Decathlon minimal series seems good value for money!
@@BelgianHikers O and regarding the trekking poles: I have the Mt100 Black trekking poles and going by the photos on the website these poles have a narrow point on the tips, which the slightly cheaper Mt100 blue poles dont seem to have.
Good to know that someone 188cm will fit inside.
Thanks, I was waiting for a review of this tent. Seems like they made a good compromise between quality and price. You don't mention it in the video but it comes at 150€. There's also a 2P-version at 190€ which weighs 1,3kg (2.9 pounds). A downside is that the foot-end is only 55cm wide, so only suitable for 51cm mattresses and aimed at mummies. I agree that the color is badly chosen, and seems to be a marketing decision to clearly separate these tents from their other models, while ignoring the preferences of backpackers.
apparently the white color is a 'environmentally motivated' decision, as the tent doesn't require any dyes. I like it in white but wonder how long this snow white theme will last :)
They're coming out with a green version later this year.
@@toon6476 how do you know?
How long would you say the trekking pole needs to be?
Ideally you'd have adjustable poles in the 115-120 range. I would guesstimate that the one on the side door needs to be about 116cm and the one on the other side about 118cm (since it needs to be at an angle). It helps if the tips are on the narrower side, so they fit into the eyelets.
Fantastic and professional looking review man! So nicely elaborated!
Gerry Lake
You can actually buy those velcro patches seperately. At least they've been available in the past.
Ooh, didn’t know that! Great tip!
Works great on my Nemo pad at least.
😂😂😂. This was very helpful thanks yall
When I combine the spark1 and Spark 2… in what warmth would I be?…
Hm, that's a tough one. My main concern would be that perhaps the one on the inside would be too compressed to loft properly, so you wouldn't benefit from the extra down layer as much as you'd hope. Perhaps a Spark 2 plus a quilt (like the ones from the Ember series) would be a better combo?
@@BelgianHikers thank you so much for your answer ☺️ well I’m quite small so they should have enough space to decompress 🤔 but that’s also a great idea ☺️
I just bought the updated Spark 0°F version, and it seems they've really listened to all the feedback. The zipper is now double-sided, making it easy to get in and out, and they've added more down insulation in the draft collar along the zipper for extra warmth. At 6'7" and 270 lbs, I opted for the long version - doh 😂, and it fits perfectly.
I'm pinning this comment, great info Philip! And good on Sea to Summit for fixing those issues. Though I'm still mad at them for launching their new versions right after I published this video 😂
Mooie video en cool kanaal 👍
Bedankt!
Excellent review from someone who has looked and pedalled it - you’re getting my head straight 🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️
Great review! I agree with your pros and cons. I bought the Altaplex in 2022 and as a 6'5" tall person I have found it to be a bit small. Pitching it correctly for rain coverage is also a challenge at times.
Thanks Jim! Slim pickings for tall people in the ultralight world unfortunately.
6’6” here with a tensor xl pad. Taking Xmid pro 2 on a thru hike soon and am pretty satisfied with the head and foot room especially when lying diagonal. Strongly recommend. Footprint is big but can be “skinny pitched” if need be.
As a 6'5" hiker looking for a UL tent myself i'm very interested in what tents you considered buying alongside the altaplex. Have you tried other tents as well?
I’m guessing that this is not the one that’s avail now, which people say is worse than thus one (& I just ordered). We’ll see.
Bloody expensive.
Great video!
How easy is this to pour water on and pack right back up? Wondering if this would make for a good tailgating grill or substitute. Does it create a complete mess if you need to shut it down in a hurry.
If you have enough water to really hose it down, I suppose you could. But it's definitely going to be messier than a grill that's closed on the bottom. The cleaner solution would probably be to put the fan on max and burn through the remaining wood or coal as quickly as possible and then brush it off.
I followed all the instructions from their own videos and website how to pack this. But after not even a year the fabric tore while stuffing it into the sack while hiking. Got any tip on how to fix it?
Ouch! Have you contacted their support?
@@BelgianHikers Life happened and I forgot about it and missed the 3 year guarantee. So im screwed xD Looking for ways to patch it now.
@@frankytap Well I’d probably go ask a professional seamstress for such a delicate task, but I would email Sea To Summit first. It’s a long shot, but sometimes companies’ll surprise you with their customer service.
What’s wrong with spring?
It's a reference to the last lines of an old Chet Baker song (I Get Along Without You Very Well). Probably shouldn't have used it since so few people know it. But I promise it made total sense to me at the time 😅

Are there any camping sites near London for the first time camper families to try out?
Hi guys gratis video im on my way to start the trail and with this video im really excited for it!!!
I meant great video😂
Thanks for the vid, good work. I'd like to know which were the really cool camping trailers, which photos have been shown in the start of the video?
I think I just did an image search for trailer tents, can’t name all of them I’m afraid 😅. But in the ‘really cool’ category, I’d start looking at Opus trailer tents. Those look amazing.
Great video guys! Well-made, entertaining to watch. We'll be hiking the trail in September this year. Your video makes us even more eager to get our boots on!
