    you know that old saying " if it works, dont mess with it" i bought a k40 also and before it i had a mpcnc, with swappable diode and milling thingy, and a 3080 before that... thing is they all have same components and electronics, difference is the co2 tube and beefier power supply on the k40... but overal they are all 4 aluminium profiles and 2/3 stepper motors... and honestly after 5 years of owning them... i could probably use the 3080 take the 5k it costs to buy a "pro laser cutting" that in reality is a k40 with a 100-150Watt tube and befier power supply... and build a industrial machine cause in parts... hardware components around 2 to 3000 USD and then is all a matter of wiring it all up and swap the motherboard and stuff. and lets say another 2k to reach the 5k for cooling and smoke exhaust... and u got probably a 25-50k DIY machine from a 3080 bone structure... but as you said in the beginning of the video... the way i have them setup now they work for me... i dont need them to do more... they are perfect as they are... and honestly the more you fiddle with them... the more crap u brake and u sort of waste cash repairing them instead of making stuff with them... but if u got a 3080 or a k40 cheapo original... its a good gateway to cnc machines... what actually brought me into cncs was my 1st ender 3 3d printer... was amazed how reliable and simple it is as parts for the price it came at. awesome stuff love the upgrade you did.

    Looks just like the Franken-40 I have planned. Still gotta get comfortable with my lil 10 watt diode laser first and build some good safety habits before I mess with anything higher powered. I was so close to building almost exactly this as my first laser (on a larger scale) but I thought better of it and decided to start out with a low powered laser which is visible to learn with (since it's low powered and visible there's a bit of forgiveness as I learn good safety practices- being able to see it helps me realize I messed up). I'll be referencing your vids when I get to building a similar setup- I almost can't wait, but safety first! Nice build! In the end I plan for at least 2x3ft bed with 3 foot being the gantry width and a setup so that I can feed wood/work through front to back so that I can print 3ft x whatever my workspace can accommodate and I will likely go with something more powerful than a 40 watt, probably between 60-80 watt. It's going to be completely custom built. I really look forward to putting the thing together but that's down the Road, I first need to start earning with my little Laser and I've already got a few very promising projects in the works to get that done. Wish I'd gotten into Lasering a long time ago- I'm 39! Better late than never. My 20 Years of remodeling and 15 of Game Dev are really paying off, that experience in those two fields is kind of coming together with Lasers... of all things- strange how life works out. Sorry for the rant- love your project. I always get ranty when I'm excited about things and I am about lazing!

    How did you connect the wires to the JST female connects? They are solder pins and won't that melt the plasric socket??

    • @MicroRotors
      @MicroRotors Год назад

      Yes, if your not carful, they will melt. A very hot iron with a small tip and quickly solder. Use a mating plug with alligator clip on the pin being soldered as a heat sink. It takes practice and I did burn my share of them.

    I successfully converted a K40 with the Makerbase MKS DLC32 v2.1. The documentation is really terrible and there is a bit of wiring to do but now I have a 32bit controller with TMC2209 drivers and lightburn compatibility. The DLC32 firmware isn’t open source as of yet I think but I didn’t haven’t to mess with the firmware to get mine working. Up next I’ll be crawling the forums for how to set up the wifi connection as a port lightburn can recognize so I don’t even have to plug into the machine. Even after all this I still come back to check out your machine. Great video!

  • @thehillbillyfarmer4547

    I have not watched your build, and there seems to be a "spitting" sound that I suspect is from a diaphragm type air pump for your assist. If that is in fact what I am hearing you can greatly reduce the sound by poking 2 holes in the lid if a jar to insert a line from pump and then to nozzle and screw jar on. I have used this type of setup as a muffler on fish tanks for many years. The air goes in as a pulse but has to build pressure to get out which then becomes more consistent in flow. Certainly a nice setup you have there.
