Cella is good stuff Maynard

It's so funny, I have no problem with cinnamon and clove, but I do have a reaction with almond. It sucks because I love this scent-haha! My guess on the razor is that you're having the same thing that you'd have comparing an Astra Green to a Gillette Silver Blue. They're both razor sharp, but one has a much keener edge. You might be able to get there with the new stone and it might have some secrets that you haven't unlocked yet. I'm far from an expert on stones, but I do know that some take a while to figure out and if you're using a slurry stone, it can add some more variables. I'm sure one of the straight razors guys will have some sage advice! I'm sure with your determination you'll get there! Take care!

A solid shave with some classic gear

I know this is an older video. I never see it mentioned, but lately I've been filling my scuttle with ice cold water. Its a game changer for sure. Like it more than warm lather, I can feel the coolness more than the slight temperature change that comes with using hot water.

Wow, that razor is keen, not a bit of drag, exactly the kind of sound I love. We have talked about this but my neck is an issue. And if my Coti or any natural edge is not where I want it. The neck is where I can tell, and that’s my passing grade. I just had to find stones that worked for me. After learning, most all Coti’s worked. But even now, I chose to finish on oil to bump the edge or I use convex to get them exactly how I like them. The tinkering and the learning is what I enjoy most. Keep at it, i promise you will get it. You have the right attitude for sure. Stay warm.

Don't get down on yourself with not getting the cotiule to preform the way you want. They are tricky and require much finesse compared to other stones. It has taken me months of exclusive practice on them to get an edge that I consider acceptable. So just keep at it and you will be rewarded. Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a good one.

I haven't used Cella for years, maybe need to pick up a jar and try it once more. I find many of the Italian jars are labelled "cream" and turn out to be more like soft soap. Let it snow ....👌🤠👌

Perfect shave Matthew!! Sometimes it takes a little practice to get the hang of a one stone hone using a coticule! But keep at it! I’m confident you’ll have no problem picking it up! Now I’m curious about what your normal honing progression is? I’ve also been noticing a lot of guys using that cella lately. At some point I’ll have to try it! Thanks for sharing Brother. Great shave ! It depends whether you want to pronounce it like any English speaker would read it: Sell-uh Or if you want to pronounce it in its original language, the brand is Italian and it's pronounced: Chella (with the same ch sound as Cherry in English) which makes sense, even similar English words borrowed from Italian are pronounced similarly. For example, the word Cello (the instrument) comes from Italian hence why it's pronounced Chello even in English. I'd say pronounce it however you prefer. The most important is to use it, it smells like delicious marzipan !

one thing i’ve started to do with the aftershave sample is apply some to the back of my hand. i used to only smell the little stick, but some scents change completely when i applied them! i went from not really liking high jump 47 to absolutely loving it just because i smelled it on my skin. great haul!!

2:07 Taylor Swift aftershave? That brief flash confused me, lol. I also bought Chella Cool to go with the Cella soap because their aftershave smells nothing like the soap. Unfortunately I can't use it because it literally burns my skin, on my face and between my fingers. The web page warns about being allergic to almonds which I am not, and it appears to be the excessive amount of alcohol and menthol. I wish they made a version without menthol

I find things I like about all the variations of knots. Boar, Badger and some older synthetic knots like Timberwolf. That said, it sounds like you've given them a fair shake and should use whatever makes you enjoy your shaves. Take care Matthew 👍

Nice shave Matthew. I had one of those inexpensive Amazon razors. I remember it being difficult to hone. I put an edge on it but it didn’t seem to last very long. Definitely better luck with Gold Dollar.

Great video. I’m just learning everything about straight razors and how to use them and it really is very involved and I’m enjoying it. I bought a Thiers Issard LeGrelot from Griffith shave company and they did a wonderful job with honing it. They are great. Highly recommended. I liked it so much I bought a vintage CV Heljestrand from them too. It’s still in the mail. Happy New Year and keep them great videos coming. : )

You’re a brave soul Matthew!! I did the same thing and bought a cheap razor for my first one and I couldn’t even get it to hone properly… then I bought my Boker carbon elite and realized the difference between a cheap razor and a quality razor and never looked back. That original cheap razor has been sitting on a shelf ever since. Never even shaved with it. 😅 Happy New Year’s brother !!

Hey mate just wondering having used so many razors what are your best shavers ? You seem to have coarse hair I do to and also sensitive skin so I love razors that are nice and efficient but also gentle on the skin

Happy New Year. I have four of Eric’s soaps and they are awesome in my opinion.I have used his most recent soap about half a dozen times and it is my favorite. I have tried honing my straight razors myself. I have a few stones and strops. I am not sure if I am making the edge better or worse 😅. I am going to keep trying though. I find many things associated with wet shaving to be very relaxing. I know that might sound odd but that is how I feel when shaving.

Nice shave! The only thing I'd say on the Gold Dollar is that there could be some edge alignment issues for someone new to honing. HRC can vary depending what steel they are using and some can run into problems if the are too hard. I think Swedish steel and some of the Japanese steel run into the mid 60s. They can be fun to hone when they are really hard-lol!

Way to power thru that shave Matt. Not sure I could have done it 😂. I quit recommending Gold Dollars, Monkeys or any other China Razors. I reached a point that my good ones started falling apart. It’s vintage Solingen for me; too many good ones for under $30. My sanity is worth that much. I am glad you’re still enjoying “Your Soap”. Great idea, I used the fire out of it this hunting season. Good shave. LongHaulTanker recommended the Union razor he picked up at a truck stop. It likely wont shave out of the package but I figure if I'm gonna own and use a straight razor, I'm also gonna learn to maintain that razor and id rather risk ruining something cheap vs something quite literally anymore expensive than 20 bucks lol. Razor Emporium did a video about the cheap vs expensive straight razor's and the sound difference you mention has to do with the quality and hardness of the steel. The cheap razors don't have the ting of a razor made from better hardening and better quality steel. It was an interesting video. Apparently some vintage razors have an even better ting than even some of the best straight razors you can get today. Old stuff was just made different. My vintage DE razors consistently outperform even new ones I've tried. Have a great new year and God Bless.

I know exactly what you mean about the slickness on Erics soap, he's a straight razor guy and he made that soap for him and his needs when straight razor shaving. Those amazon razors really do give edges that can shave, i'm not sure if the feel is the same as my other more expensive razors. When I started to learn how to hone I definitely had 1 or 2 of these lying around to use and experiment with. This was a great video Matthew, can't wait for what 2025 brings
