This quote demonstrates one of the biggest issue I have with Sowell. Cause has little impact on his perception even when he alludes to it. What he is alluding to is representative of culture influences and cultural proclivities. However, the least natural of all American cultures is that of descendants of slaves. People cobbled together regardless of ethnicity and language. Stripped of almost all original cultural, religious, ethnic and ideological practices only to be replaced with a restricted version of Christian European version of the above. What could possibly go wrong when you strip tge identity of people, make fathers not part of their children's lives when the kids are sold, make it illegal to teach them to read or write in the language that was forced upon them. Later free them then, in many places, make it a requirement to be able to read to vote. Setup a "separate but equal" policy in name only for the subsequent 90 years. Expecting and artificial culture to change in the span of my parents actual generation (born in 1952) to me (born in 1983) to my daughter (born in 2020). In reference to me my parents were generation zero of full agency, me and my siblings generation 1 and my daughter, nieces, and nephews generation 2. None of this matters to him because if he could could escape it why not the entire culture? He routinely demonstrates a lack of understanding of what a culture is an isn't. Cultures seldom change rather they are replaced.
