GM 3.8L 3800 Series II engine upper and lower intake manifold & valve cover gasket replacement
Просмотров 142 тыс.8 лет назад
This video shows the steps I did to replace the upper intake manifold (air plenum) on my 2001 Monte Carlo SS 3.8L 3800 Series II engine. The replacement was need due to material and gasket degradation of upper intake manifold resulting in coolant (anti-freeze) loss or leak near EGR valve stove pipe. During repair I also replaced the Lower intake gasket and valve cover gaskets. Here is a list of...
Superb video!!! Only wish you showed filling fluid on the 1200
Know I am late to the game here. But I would have gone ahead and replaced the Valve seals while it's apart. That's just me though 😉
Yeah I would have but was leaving for a bike trip the following week and didn't have the time to.
Wow, the 1200's engine looks a lot like this.
great insturctional video ,thanks helped a lot .
I would like to know why you replace the whole plastic intake for
if overheated, it may get warped and start causing coolant to pass through the EGR tube. coolant then may get into cylinders. In this video he used Dorman plenum, I prefer ATP brand for that part. They should be kind of equal in quality though, I guess.
Very good vid. I know it's an old viid, but in case you or anyone else can use the info, I have a trick for easily filling the forks. I was a Honda tech for 15 years, did lots of fork jobs. I filled a measuring cup with the proper amount of fork fluid. Take the valve core out of the top of the forks. Hook a vacuum brake bleeder to the air valve. Remove the drain screw from the bottom of the fork. Get a length of rubber hose that will fit snug in the drain. Put the hose in the drain, put the other end in the cup of oil. Turn on the vacuum and it will suck all the oil up into the drain. Put the screw back in and turn off the vacuum. Install the valve core and you're done.
My mechanic didnt quote me a new plenum..jus the gasket for the plenum and the lower intake gasket....for 1100! i thought i was getting a new updated plenum!!! This dont seem right?
That sound like ripping off. The new plenum cost like 80 bucks. Why not include that in $1100??? It's not updated, just a new aftermarket one though.
@@romanmatyushchenko9140 it's not updated?
Why put a plastic back on when you can get the gen 3 metal just curious?
@@bwet2901 because you need a different throttle body, adapter plate, and drill a hole for the vacuum return line in order to use a gen iii intake on a gen ii engine.
@@flipdry Yeah I actually seen a picture of that engine lastnight and was like ah ok that configuration is all messed up.
Thank u but u could of done the video in 8 minutes 😊
Because that is bs
Thank you so much for this video man got my 04 with 350k back on the road I noticed a knocking an started to freak out so I looked into it found this video and replaced the 2 bad bearings and we are good to go spent about 100$ in parts and did the work myself. Would have costed me 2-3k to have any mechanic in my town do it. Really appreciate people like you
Glad it was helpful
I am working on my 98 Intrigue and your video is a big help, thanks.
Glad to hear it was helpful
what torq you use for the bearrings??
I don't recall, but it is covered in the video.
He used 15 ft-lbs plus 90 degrees
Currently doing this on an 03 Corolla. Hoping I caught it soon enough.
Doing this on my Matrix with same engine. Same here. I bought the car at auction, and didn’t notice it until I put nearly 300 miles on before I noticed it because road and wind noise is so loud compared to the engine. Who knows how long the previous owner drove with it this way. Fingers crossed, but I’m also more than prepared to rebuild the engine.
@@Dude13450 how did it hold up? the crank shaft are pretty strong in these
@@thenman23 not a single score just pure mirror as if brand new. Slapped new bearings in and no sound!
Hey how did you order 2/2 and 2/3 was it over the phone or online and are these considered standard
Ordered the bearing from a Toyota dealer on-line, I used standard bearings.
Did you replace the rubber boot, and if so where did you get it.
I did not replace the boots.
😂 those head screws are a mutherfuker lmao i hate them! Lol pisses me off each time because you gotta get them in there lined up exactly right
The con-rods on my 1zz is making side to side movement like from crank side going to flywheel side.is it worn out bearings also? No up and down movement yet
side to side movement is OK up down movement is the movement you dont want any of.
@@tabletop45 thanks a lot sir!

Not saying you didn’t but every time I tear that far into my engine I make sure to set valve clearance ohh scratch that as I’m typing you start setting clearance lol
Just installed an oil pan gasket and new sensor that were leaking on my 03 Bonneville. I appreciate you taking the time. Very informative. I'm ordering the kits today and gonna get the rest of this done. Thank you.
You did not show how you put the plastic gauge on the journa, the put the cap back on and l then torque it. Then remove the cap again and then it would show what you are measuring? which should I guess the plastic part that stuck to the journal, is that right?
Shown at 40:42. That is correct.
This is the best video I've seen on this procedure for the 3800 series 2. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Very nice video. Well done..One thing i was un decided on, after viewing several videos, was what sealer to use on the lower intake manifold bolts...and how much to use....LIM and valve covers are installed tho...keep fingers crossed! UIM tomorror followed by injector cleaning and install...05 Lesabre has become a hobby. Thanks for the very nice video! jp New..8 days later..The 05 LeSabre is complete and running very smooth ! Thanks for all your tips and for a great video. jp

Great video Mr. Mark.

Just tackled this job on my sons 07 Corolla and this was an excellent step by step video. I know this is an older video but these things run forever with proper oil changes & maintenance. Fine job sir!
What happens if add more engine oil his sound going to stop
No adding more oil will not quite the knocking sound, ear plugs will tho🙂
A rod can only knock a few times before it's no longer in able to maintain standard clearance. It's essentially impossible to react quick enough. So adding oil won't help. The only rod knocking that doesn't do permanent damage is the few knocks you can get when a car hasn't been started for weeks. Thicker oil will fill the bigger space but only for so long until it eventually wears and starts knocking again. It's a good idea though if you're unable to fix it immediately and need to keep driving - it may slightly limit the damage.
Vary easy to listen to. I just got my first WHANG I've always wanted one but the seals are shot. Thank vary Much
Brooooo very detailed vid,and very informative, helped me find my leak easily, vid should have waayyy more likes, thank you bro, keep on wrenching👊🏽💯💯....
I’m not really a car guy. Wonder what a shop would charge to fix it ? ( 2023 price)

Industrial engines class bosses..shown that...muriattuc acid at..ace hardware.... Can....dissolve alum..copp..off steel...then soap off or neutralize........then polishing bands...I...get ingenious and use OLD bearings over coarse....then basketball lace to polish on down to 1000+
Top class
What are the torque specs for the bolts? I need to work on my sister’s corolla that happens to have the same issue
It's all in the video.
15 ft lbs (20Nm) plus 90 degrees. works out to around 40Nm.
Thank you for filming and being very thorough throughout your video.
Thanks, hope you were able to get your done.
Thank you so much! And dang, your bike is so clean. Looks like it's never been ridden. I gotta up my game! Thanks again
Thank you i have an oil leak seems like the same problem going to give it a try you make it look so easy.
Good luck with yours
Hello, very useful - going to be doing this on my 83 Aspencade shortly. I would like to know where you got the nice chrome radiator screen if possible - looks great.
That was a Markland product that is no longer made, it was purchased back in mid 80's.
2000 Grand Prix, 3800 same issue fixing it now thank you for tell me what you did simple to do✅
Hello good Stuff 2 questions did you re use the old bolts ? And I got lost with the marking with plastic in the sleeve is that step necessary? Also did you remove crossmember Thanks
Yes, I reused the original bolts. If you are referring to the plastigauge it is necessary to make sure you have the correct oil clearance for the bearings. i did not remove the cross-member I was able to access the bolts with a swivel socket.
Do all of those parts come in the complete gasket kit or do i need the kit in addition to all of those?
The VG-195 Vesrah kit includes all the necessary engine gaskets, O-rings and valve guide oil seals to rebuild a complete engine. The other parts list in the description above are the parts I purchased to complete my job. You can google the other parts to see what the are, but mainly what you will need are the oil seals and O-rings list above and a Vesrah Top End Gasket Kit - GL1100 VG-595.
how much would one charge for a job like this?
You shouldnt charge for a job like this, its a stopgap solution
These are the best engines America ever made

Nice video, thanks for doing it. In the future please turn off the damn music.
Nice good Job 🙏🇺🇸
That C clip gave me hell
I can’t seem to get the rod a washer out where you had finessed it. I got the o ring out but the rest seems to be solid
Thank you for this video 💯 couldn’t find anything on my leak problem u had exactly what I needed to kno‼️‼️
Is it kinda the same procedure for the GL1500 /6 ?
I've only done my 1100, but they are all basically the same.
@@mrmarkg8564 Ok im about to buy a 88 gl1500 /6 with 70k miles runs but needs a head gastket. 800$ looks like a pretty simple job.
@@jerry5736 it's not difficult at all, if the bike is in good shape grab it for that price
That thing is a beauty. So clean
