Today I finally had a chance to try our G37xS equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 Ultra High Performance All Season tires in the snow. We have had these tires for about a year and a half and roughly 15,000 miles, but this is the first real snow we've gotten over a winter and a half. Take a ride with me while I go on a reconnaissance drive to feel them out in various road conditions....

Winter Driving a Cayman | Bridgestone Blizzak WS-90 Initial Impressions
Просмотров 5932 года назад
About 2,000 miles ago, the temperatures dropped and I swapped my 19" summer tires for a set of 17" winter tires. I have used Bridgestone Blizzak tires before in the form of the WS-60 about 15 years ago on a Mustang GT I had at the time. Last winter I was able to try a set of Pirelli Sottozero Serie II on the Cayman's factory 19" wheels. This year I've downsized to some 17" tires. This is a shor...

From a G37xS owner to another, have you noticed with the traction control on you could still induce power oversteer accelerating out of a 90 corner? I did exactly that. It made me wonder if my traction control was not even working at all!😢
with that said, I cant believe why you still own this vehicle, lol ...
I'm not sure who you're replying to. As for us, we turned in the lease in 2021 and haven't looked back.
@@IsaacReddinger makes total sense ....
It's crap that I have to watch a 4 minute commercial to see a 6 minute video, come on RUclips don't you already make aenough cash without this?
Wow. That sucks! Thanks for watching anyway!
porsche is much different than a mustang in the snow there isn't any weight on the rear in a mustang so in theory this is a pretty good winter vehicle
They are definitely very different. This car was great!
What was your loaner that was better? And what suv does your wife have that’s better?
Volvo V60 Cross Country. Solves all of your complaints. Comfortable seats, torque-converted transmission, good handling, better fuel economy.
Agreed. But it was out of budget.
I have the exact set up. I also have a set of Michelin X ice, so I have never driven my pilot sport all season 4 under snowy conditions. G37xS is a beast with winter tires though. 😅 Follow up post: We had our first snow this season. Although I could get around in my Pilot sport A4, still there was a huge difference when comparing with my snow tires. It is a little hopeless on ice😅. I guess I was spoiled by years of driving on snow tires. Getting a set of blizzard WS90 tomorrow 😅
Buy a low mileage 2013-14 outback 3.6R. Then you get the heavy duty 5 speed auto transmission and different AWD system that's in the WRX with 45-55 torque split. I did and never looked back.
Nice tip! There are pros and cons to both generations, but that 4th gen might be the sweet spot. Thanks for watching!
Strut tower brace changes it 100% I'd recommend that to any outback owner
I know this video is older but I am looking into a 2013 g37x with 89k miles. It is from the rust belt and had 5 owners. It drove nice and shifted well. Anything to look out for?
Sounds promising! If you can, arrange for a pre-purchase inspection at a local shop you trust or at a local Nissan or Infiniti dealer. It may cost you $1-200, but could be helpful in the long run if they find something major that needs attention. Ours is in great condition, but I have seen some come in as trades where I used to work and they were pretty rough. Also, while a CarFax is not bulletproof, make sure the selling dealer has one of those to show you/give you at time of sale. Look for anything that was a repeat problem that a prior owner had diagnosed or fixed. Check for regular maintenance, inspections etc. You do not have to be scared off by multiple owners if the maintenance was good. Good luck!
@@IsaacReddinger Thank you! 🙏 very informative and the video was excellent as well
I have a 2013 Subaru Outback 3.6 R and I love my car! I love the power it has, its smooth ride. Handles well in all terrains and weather. There are so many perks on this car, that it's difficult to understand all the negatives things you are saying. Your dialect suggests you're a half glass empty kind of person.
To the contrary, I'm usually optimistic. Also, be sure to check out the sister video to this describing the things I DID like about this car. Thanks for watching!
still have this wallet? willing to sell? dog chewed mine up and need a new one....they don't make it anymore!!
I still have it but I don't use it, it's sitting in my night stand. I've moved to their slim card wallet. I love them both!
@@IsaacReddingerwould you sell it
still have this wallet? willing sell?
wait my 2011 Subaru Outback Limited 3.6R is pretty fast. I've gone 118 mph and even raced some WRX and won. Also I've never done any maintenance stuff like transmission fluid changes or car washes lol and it's even gotten in a huge accident, and it's still going strong with 215k miles
Thanks for watching
Then why did you buy it ??? D A whiner
Apparently you didn't watch the video. Lack of wagon options in the US. Also, not every car is prefect. And to your point, it's why we didn't keep it or get another Outback to replace it. Thanks for watching!
This will soon belong to a no quema cuh
Wha?
You seem like a plastic wallet with some type of animated character on it type of guy.
Haha. Not for a long time. Thanks for watching!
Tires won't on a Subaru
Tires won't what?
Thank God I no longer live in an area to have to worry about snow & ice.
I'm one of the few I know who enjoy it. Unfortunately, here in southern Pennsylvannia, we don't get snow like we used to. We've even considered relocating a few hours north. You were at least smart enough to move away from something you don't like. Most people I know complain about the snow every year but don't do anything about it. Thanks for watching!
The rule is simple. If you you use a lot of cash like me (and I do because it's much easier to hold track of your finances this way) the only wallet which makes sence will be a bi-fold or a tri-fold. Also if you live in a country where documents are bigger than the credit-card (my case).
Fair point
@@IsaacReddinger In the country where I live, if you pay by the debit/credit cards or the Apple Pay, the expences will appear on your account only 3-4 days later. So after a good week-end of spending, you will easily lose the track of your money. While if you just extract the monthly cash, you know precisely how much you have, and even can divide it week by week. I tried the card holders from Recycled Firefighter (love these guys) with the cash strap. It was awesome and super-durable, but yeah you can't fit 5-6 bills in there, and when in shops, it takes time to fold bills each time. Bi-fold is simpler, plus, these bad boys can be friggin gorgeous. Also our ID is much bigger than the credit card size (it's like double) and they require you to have a paper document for the car each time you are driving (fits in the bi-fold), if you are pulled over. And they say to ALWAYS have it with you and never live it in the car, because if you are carjacked and have this car-passport inside, the hijacker can legally drive, pass by cops like nobody's business, and it's far easier for him to sell your car.
I have a 2006 Subaru outback and it is running strong at 177k miles.
Glad to hear it but that is a totally different car...
I have a 2019 Subaru outback 3.6R with 110K miles and I’m on the 2nd transmission it is cheap junk not worth 40 thousand dollars of my money one bit
While it is frustrating to have had to replace the transmission, unfortunately sometimes that can happen before 100k with any brand. Hopefully the new one lasts you longer!
@@IsaacReddinger no not with any brand
Yes with any brand. I've seen it
@@GideonMcCarthy how do you drive it? Sounds like you neglect it one way or another? If you're an American, I can assume you don't know how to drive (ive seen the way an average Jo drives in the states). Slamming into drive while still rolling in Reverse... Over stressing drivetrain by towing excessive weight... driving in freezing conditions then not servicing more often etc... many ways to neglect the transmission.

Thank you! I still use mine every day!
Just bought a 2013 G37 with 90k on it. Loving the car but dealership was pushing extended warranty for $3500 (engine/transmission). Everyone says the cars are super reliable and I do a lot of my own mechanical work. Is it worth it.... not sure? Any thoughts??
I have yet to get it. Leaning towards no.
See if you can get the service history. Does it have gaps? Be careful what warranty you buy. Make sure you ask to see what is excluded. Some warranties won't cover fluids or one time use hardware, even if it's needed for the repair. Sometimes they also don't cover the full labor rate. Any difference would be owed by you in the event of a warranty repair. Try to get a warranty from a reputable company like Fidelity/JM&A, Zurich, etc.
@IsaacReddinger Great advice. I just checked the Carfax and called the Service Department to verify work done. I also called the previous dealer who transferred the car. The salesperson who sold me the car said it has all new fluids. The Service Department said they didn't do anything other than lube and filter. Called the Sales Manager and he says they were done, except the brake fluid. I asked if this is in their records, and he said yes. Good Motto: Trust but verify. Going down later today for them to do the work for free. Always verify what a dealer says as the Car Fax doesn't show everything.
Exactly
Good luck!
I get too much snow where I’m at, and it gets too cold… I wish I could get by on all-seasons it would save me a lot of money.
Perhaps an all weather tire might work for you next time you need tires? There are some really great ones available and they are severe snow rated just like full winters. Michelin CrossClimate2, several from Vredestien, Goodyear WeatherReady, etc.
I think the snow mode on the g37 just starts at a higher gear and makes the adaptive awd stay on four wheels, i enjoy the tires so far I've had them for a couple months now in the northeast, they are more stable in the snow than the Continental dws all seasons i had in the past that wore down so fast. Great in the rain and light snow for certain. Thanks for the info!
Thanks for watching! The DWS are very popular with many people I know but I've never liked them.
@@IsaacReddinger I agree I didn't like them at all the sidewalls always wore down quickly, even with an alignment and tire rotations it made no difference, very mediocre compared to the PS 4.
crazy how the Infiniti is in the garage but not the Porsche lol
It's no garage Queen!
Rear cameras were invented by Infiniti and first appeared on the 2000 Q45. Rear cameras were required by law in the US in 2018.
Thanks for watching!
Good vid mate
Thank you!
Is there a head gasket issue on the 3.6r? Also, have you experienced any shuddering or vibration from the CVT.
During my 2 years working in a Subaru service department, we had no 3.6 or even the older 3.0 models needing head gasket replacement. The 4 cylinders however, we did several of those. Granted, the 4 is much more common than the 6, but it's not like they are rare. I would feel more confident with the 3.6 than the 2.5 model. As far as the CVT, it was honestly one of, if not the best CVTs on the market. That is not to say that I like CVTs, but if you are going to have a car with one the Subaru CVT is very good. During my 30,000 miles with ours it never had any issues and was always smooth. If I remember correctly, the CVT in the 3.6 Outback and all Ascent models were a high torque version and theoretically more robust/reliable.
Head gaskets were an issue with the late 90s early 2000s naturally aspirated Subarus. It hasn't been an issue with any of the turbocharged cars or any post-2009-ish. Believe the last years were 2009 but I could be a little off with that. Anything newer won't have that issue though, Subaru learned from their mistakes using the thin graphite head gasket. The multi-layer steel head gaskets aren't any more problematic than any other vehicle - just don't let it overheat and change your oil and coolant on time it's totally fine.
Did they include any informational materials in the packaging?
What kinds of materials did you have in mind? They did include a business card, but I think that's it. Maybe a thank you note.
Great, that car looks so fun to drive.
It is! Favorite car I've ever owned!
I've been looking at getting either the Bridgestone Blizzak ws-90 or the Michelin X-ice Snow tires this winter. I have a new Mazda AWD CX-30 this year and the stock all season tires look to have horrible reviews in the snow and ice. I live North of where you do so I see more snow and deeper snow. I think after watching your video and then tire shopping and finding out that I can get the Blizzaks for $200 cheaper than the Michelins, I am going to get the Blizzaks. Great video, I enjoyed it!
Thanks for the comments! I swear by the Bridgestone Blizzaks and I think you will love them great choice! It's the standard of the industry.
I just ordered the Blizzak WS-90 with a deal to buy three and get the fourth tire for one dollar. It cost about $612 installed which seems well worth it. Thanks again for your excellent video.
@Wigglythegreat2 smokin deal! Enjoy!
I’m actually looking at one now do you recommend it
We love ours! I always recommend sending the car to a shop you trust to preform a pre-purchase inspection to check for any major red flags. $1-200 now could save you thousands. If you treat these cars right, they'll treat you right. Good luck!
I’ve been driving my 350z year round in brutal Minnesota winters for 10 years and I can testify, Blizzaks make it possible to race Mack trucks on unplowed highways mid blizzard.
How long would each set last?
Depends on how, where and what you drive. I used mine for 2 winters (about 5 months each) and I drive about 1,000 miles per month, so I put about 10,000 miles on them. They currently have 9-10/32 of tread left. I think they start new with 12 or 14. If you drive hard on them, or have a heavy car, or use them frequently above 50-60 degrees, they will wear faster than if you have a lot of snow/rain in cold temps. We didn't have any snow here in the winter of 22/23 and it was mostly dry. The Cayman also weighs just over 3,000 lbs. These are all factors of how long the tires will last. Also keep in mind, winter tires are deemed worn out at 6/32 and they have a specific tread wear indicator in addition to the standard 2/32 wear indicator.
Thanks for this response it was extremely helpful. I drive a camaro LT1, and it is my daily (with the right winter tires, these cars are meant to be driven, and not stored). It has a weight of about 3600LBS and im planning on driving very carefully to make them last at least 3-4 winters. Our michigan winters get snowy but also melt a lot, and temperatures usually stay very low.
Glad to help! You're scenario is ideal for long life. Enjoy!
@IsaacReddinger thank you! Also lovin the cayman. Such a great car 👍🏻
Enjoyed the video ! , definitely agree , with the R&D that brands like Michelin , Continental and Pirelli have done with the tires all round, compounds and new tread patterns etc you can enjoy driving cars that otherwise in the past would have been considerably more difficult. Then you add a experienced driver who can make adjustments, getting a good feel for the road along with one of top winter tires it’s definitely possible. Having a good or great set of winters changes everything without getting overconfident. Like the drivers who have AWD cars and think they’re invincible out there. I’ve used the WS90 on my last car and other then the Michelin X-ice it has been the best tire I’ve driven on. I’ll most likely be driving a mid 2000’s 911 AWD with solid winter tires and I seriously look forward to it as it will be tested in the Canadian winter. Good on you for enjoying your car all yr round.
I agree and thank you for the kind words! Have fun in your 911!
one of the best winter tires in my experience really good gripping on ice and snow..can't complain. will be using it for 2022-2023 winter season again.
Enjoy and thanks for watching!
car looks well taken care of. like how you kept everything original, no mods. love it.
Thanks for the kind words!
so why the heck does someone think that a transmission with six actual gears is so much better than a CVT with six simulated gears? I really think that's kind of nuts, and I would actually prefer to turn off the simulated shifting and have one smooth transition of power like these CVTs were really designed to have.
Indeed, with my 2.5 Crosstrek, if I keep the revs at 2k when accelerating from a standstill it does not do the simulated shifts. Of course it's not the fastest to get going at that speed, but I'd say unless someone is really in a hurry behind me, there ends up being more space between the cars behind me after 2-4 seconds. The 3.6 is even better in this regard.. I appreciate Subaru enormously for this, the cars are really well thought out in many aspects including this one.
For most people, the feeling of the car never "shifting" and staying at one RPM is disconcerting. In what I do, I have literally had poeple call me and ask if their car is broken because they were going down a hill, the car sensed it, and downshifted a gear in order to use engine braking to help maintain the speed. They heard the higher RPM and thought the transmission was bad.
More reliable with set gears, durable long term over the "band/chain" and performs better acceleration wise,no hesitation. As far as the droning sound, you do get used to it but still doesn't sound like a real down shift but that part is preference, not performance
@whoami-eb7cq well said!
My 3.6R gets 21 miles to gallon around town and 26 on highway. my 3.6R has about 10 inches of ground clearance, guess what - that's to clear the ground, you can't have a low car and clear the ground off road. Correct, it is not going to handle like a BMW or a Porsche SUV but they don't have the clearance now do they! And I find the horsepower of the 3.6R quite adequate and faster than many of the cars on the road so how can you complain about that? You bought the wrong car for your needs, Isaac.
Agreed. The car I wanted is not sold here.
BMW is a joke
Thanks for the insight!
Did you test drive it?
I worked for a Subaru dealer at the time, so yes. Also, we test drove it alongside a Forester for comparison. Again, as mentioned in the video, we didn't/don't have many wagon choices in the US in general(not that I consider this a wagon, IMO it's not because it rides as high as an SUV), before even taking budget into account.
I added a white line rear sway bar ($250) - a nice upgrade. Also put on a 1.5" lift and King heavy springs because its just too low, Id like better shocks. I dont like the throttle response, its sluggy, my pet peeve - my trans is the 2013 automatic... I kinda wish I had gone with the 2.5 turbo, more options for mods...
You should block all the haters . What year was this car ?
2018. Haters gonna hate
Yes the seats , the small holes get clogged with every spec of dirt , the passenger seat has no height adjustment that sucks , riding in the second row I find noisy. We have a 2019 touring Outback 3.6 , and the variable transmission sucks also, like a rubber and
I wonder if that guy on the Road was lost
Haha, I would've stopped and asked if he needed to go someplace (now I realize while typing this that he seemed to be heading in the same direction to boot), but maybe things work differently where the video was filmed..
Good driving! Nice tire choice
Thanks for the kind words! I swear by Blizzaks!
