    The handling in these cars is easy to fix. For about $300 you can get a strut tie bar and the 20mm rear anti roll bar from the STI. Ya turns out the STI anti roll bar is an exact fit. I agree that the seats aren’t the best but the aren’t terrible either, I’d say average. I have no issues with the CVT in my 3.6r. The thing with most Subarus is they are built to do a lot of things. They take “utility” very seriously. They are super safe and very reliable. What most of them aren’t is sports cars. If what you wanted was a station wagon that was fast then you buy a Mercedes AMG E63. It will cost you 3 times as much to buy and to maintain. Good luck with reliability on the Mercedes, it’s good if you just want fast.

      @@pickofthecrop8039 yup, the STi rear anti roll bar/ stabilizer fits the 2015-2017 Outback and possibly the 2018-2019 as well since they only refreshed the car. I’m sure it fits the Legacy too.

      @@porsche558 That bar kit is referenced in a video from "The Fast Lane" in which they interviewed a couple who own a 2019 Outback and installed the STI sway bar kit. They said it made a huge difference in the handling. ruclips.net/video/DAcOfnGcc4s/видео.html

      @@amirabelardo8203 I don’t know, the 2015 to 2019 Outback and Legacy are all of the same generation. The 2011 to 2014 are of a different generation so parts for those might be different.

    I have a 2017 3.6R. I would have to say I have had a different experience that this guy. The wagon can get up and move when I want it to, and the handling is great for an SUV. Where I think it really out shines the others, is snow and ice. I bought this car because I am not able to takes days off do to bad weather. I swapped out the tires for a set of blizzak winter tires and I am very thankful this car has no problem commuting over a snow covered pass, and it has one of the highest safety records out there. He may not like his Outback 3.6 but I love mine.

      That’s because you Dan are smart and could have more SUBS in a week than this guy has. I have a 2018 3.6 Outback Limited. You want to drive a SHITTY handling wagon? Try a XC70 Volvo. I have one of those as well. Bought it new. AWD system sucks. Feels like you are driving a tank....cause you are.

    My 3.6R gets 21 miles to gallon around town and 26 on highway. my 3.6R has about 10 inches of ground clearance, guess what - that's to clear the ground, you can't have a low car and clear the ground off road. Correct, it is not going to handle like a BMW or a Porsche SUV but they don't have the clearance now do they! And I find the horsepower of the 3.6R quite adequate and faster than many of the cars on the road so how can you complain about that? You bought the wrong car for your needs, Isaac.

    I've had my 2019 3.6R Touring for 16 months and have 13,500 miles on it, about half of that interstate. I sort of agree regarding the seats, but since I get out and "stretch" every two hours, it's not a deal breaker. Handing is exactly what I expected from a raised wagon designed to do family duty; it's neither sporty nor disappointing, but it is secure. In short, it is what it is supposed to be. I didn't buy the car for fuel economy--would have gone for the 2.5 if I cared about that. The 3.6 doesn't make great power, but it makes enough for its purpose. My previous Subie was a 2016 Crosstrek, and coming from that, the 3.6 is a monster. In short, it's the quickest normally aspirated Outback out of the box, and it should have plenty of room for performance enhancements. I'm glad I got mine while the big flat six was still available.

    I have a 2017 Subaru Outback Limited with 75,000 miles with the standard 4 cylinder engine. I have taken that family on vacation to Oregon, Washington, Vancouver, Canada, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona, and this Outback was comfortable to drive on long road trips and was like a mountain goat on the snowy roads with the all-season Yokohama AVID Ascend GT tires. A few years ago, we visited our Southern California mountains for the first season of snow, and it turned into a big snowstorm that stranded many motorists with two-wheeled drive vehicles. The Outback plowed through the snow like a champ and escaped the stranded mess of cars. The Subaru Outback with its AWD system makes it a super-utility vehicle, especially in bad weather. The 3.6R just gives the Outback more muscle for a utility vehicle.

    I’m on my 4th outback in 9 years. I drive 35k miles a year for work and I’m pretty knowledgeable with what’s good and not good about the vehicles. Yes, seats are not great. I actually have a recaro seat I put in mine. The vehicle handling could be a lot better. Stiffer, more sporty suspension I think would help. This is especially true when the vehicle is loaded with gear or people. As far as power, the 3.6L 6 cylinder has plenty of power. I live in the mountains and it’s an ideal engine for passing people on mountain highways. Fuel economy is actually quite good on long flat highway travel. I easily get 25-28mpg with a ski box on when driving on relatively flat highways. The CVT works well in my experience. I often use the paddle shifters to control speed while descending slippery mountain passes. It only prevents you from down shifting when your rpms are too high for the gear. There are definitely things that could be improved on the outback but it would cause the vehicle price to be much higher.

    My wife has a 2016 limited. She refuses to give it up. 3.6 continues to do the job 140k miles later

    So this is what a Karen looks like when spending little money and expecting top of the line performance and luxury. Its a Subaru. Consumers buy them for their safety rating, best awd in class, and utility. Eveything else included is just icing on the top.

      I mean if you say so. It's a 37k car. Thats 1 year old Audi Q5, bmw X5 money right there. And in the new competition it's fighting Honda passport and Toyota RAV4 which are a massive leap in reliability. Not to mention riding on a platform that hasn't seen a true update in almost 15 years.

      They are one of the safest vehicles and offer more from that AWD system over a Honda, Toyota, Mercedes… ect…
      You can get more from those vehicles but the Germans will break every other day and a Honda/Toyota can’t even come close to off-road offerings that a Subaru offer… and yes I have a 2012 3.6R limited with 151K is my daily
      Was so glad I chose this vehicle as I live in NH and they are absolutely incredible in the snow!!

      J&L, Subaru is NOT the ONLY vehicle manufactured as AWD "from the ground up". The main version of Audi Quattro found on most models (A4/A5/A6/A7/A8/Q5/Q7/Q8) is full-time AWD and the cars are built around it. It's why everyone complains that they aren't great track cars or when pushed to 9/10ths on the road because they understeer due to engine placement because of the AWD system.

      Some are, many are AWD, and within Quattro there is a mix of FWD and RWD based platforms. Q7/Q8 A7/A8 are rear wheel drive based AWD. Other cars might depend on the generation.
      There was a limited edition R8 that was RWD only, so not all.
      Subaru is the only car manufacturer that designs its care as AWD from the ground up as only AWD except for the BRZ…

    4 things I hate about my 2019 Porsche 911: (1) can't get a sheet of plywood in the trunk, (2) no 3rd row!, (3) ground clearance is a joke, (4) fuel economy! My wife's Lexus has the same size engine and gets much better gas milage!

    you are asking for fuel economy on a 6-cylinder engine which no 6 cylinder cars have. If you want fuel economy buy a 4 cylinder

      That's not always true with 4 cylinder. There are "economy" cars with a 4 cylinder that can't break 25mpg.

      @thespiritofthenight8196 that's incorrect. All cars can get stuck. It's ok to be a fanboy. And it's ok for me to get a car that fit our needs (somewhat) and not be 100% happy with it. No car is prefect.

      People are shitting all over these comments, but he’s not wrong - plenty of other 6cyl mid-full size cars get upper 20mpgs. Subarus have never been the best fuel misers, and the constantly-engaged awd doesn’t help. It’s exactly why Audi went from a mechanical Torsen-style center diff to an e-Diff that can run the car in fwd mode 98% of the time.

    Must be some big differences with the US and AU markets then.
    1) I find the seats in my 2019 3.6R Premium (we only have two flavours - Standard and Premium, with the latter having all options included) to be very comfortable, but they don't look like yours - mine do look fatter and cushier.
    2) I find the handling to be surprisingly good around corners with a lot of lateral flatness, with the only unavoidable downer being a bit of bounce over fast speed bumps and dipping under heavy braking. Hard cornering works, but you rely on the corners of your tyres for the grip. Fatter swaybars may fix this at the cost of some added firmness in the ride.
    3) The CVT is great! If I switch to Sports Sharp mode, it's snappy and leaps off the line with plenty of pull. If I use Intelligent mode, yeah, it's a little laggy and acts a little like a regular auto in that respect, but it's waaaaay more fuel efficient in Intelligent mode. I agree that the fake gears with the flappy paddles aren't that exciting, but they are responsive, and you can do some effective engine braking with it, which is good for spirited mountain drives. The biggest niggle for me is a bit of lag sometimes in actioning reverse gear with movement.
    4) The 3.6R is definitely more fuel efficient than previous Subaru's (not comparing it to other brands here). My old 2008 Subaru Liberty (Legacy) 2.5i which was a manual transmission consumed 10-12 litres per 100 kilometres on a regular basis, with my absolute record being 7.7 litres on highway and that was REALLY trying for an economy run, spending the entire tank on full highway driving and minimising slowing/stopping as much as possible. The 3.6R regularly pulls 9-10 litres per 100 kilometres on a regular basis, and my best record so far has been 7.4 litres on the highway (!!!!!), and I wasn't even trying for an economy run at all, so it should still get slightly better than that! Granted there's almost ten years between these models, but I'm seriously impressed that you can get so much fuel efficiency out of a 6 cylinder engine!
    I do agree that the cabin can get a little noisy under full noise, but how often do you do that?

      There are a handful of things you guys seem to get that we don't too, like heated rear seats, remote start, rear cam washer, etc.

      Just like the toyota landcruisers in Australia are direct imports from Japan and reliable compared to the toyotas in America.The subarus in America are made at the lafayatte plant in Indiana state and they could be different from the ones that come from Japan.

      I, too, own 2018 3.6R. Good looking, fun to drive and reliable as a stone. Don't know what would please this fellow and his wife but I think they should find it and trade their Subaru in.

    Have a 2015 3.6r since 2016. Put 10,000 miles per year on it. No issues with the CVT or windshield. The flat 6 is heavy and noisy but gets the job done. Highway mileage is great. City driving can be smooth and effortless if you are light on the pedal.

    I have a 2018 Outback Touring 3.6. Don't find it to be any of the things mentioned. I love it. It's an SUV, you don't need sports car handling or power-like you stated. I've owned both. For example. I had a 2015 Lexus Gs 350. It has about 312 horsepower, and that was plenty of fun. Great handling/cov. But, at the end of the day-the 3.6 outback has adequate power. It's fun to drive. Even if you stuck 50 more hp, like, what's the end game? I've put 5 people in it several times, and it still has some go-juice.
    But, to be fair, I'll choose one at random. I think the Acura MDX has 290-355 hp, depending on the trim. I've driven several of them and, to me...they're sloppy. Way too big. The only upside was the seat was a bit more comfy. But..I've driven both by virtue of my job. I've driven almost every car, truck and suv on the market. And I chose the outback. That says something.
    Maybe the Lexus Rx 350 or the Honda Pilot Touring wins for confort and power.
    Lexus is too expensive. Pilot...ok, if that's your thing.
    I've driven them ALL!
    BTW, Pilot touring has 280 with 262 ft torque. That's 35 hp. It also weighs 400 more pounds.
    You can't match up VW bc the reliability isn't there. Same goes for GM or Ford. Of course these are my opinions.

    wait my 2011 Subaru Outback Limited 3.6R is pretty fast. I've gone 118 mph and even raced some WRX and won. Also I've never done any maintenance stuff like transmission fluid changes or car washes lol and it's even gotten in a huge accident, and it's still going strong with 215k miles

    Honestly sounds like a car buyer that has never driven a Subaru before and decided to see what all the hype was about. The stuff about mpgs is not unheard of as that is what the outback sticker says and it varies, but people have to try a CVT transmission if they haven’t done so (which seems like it) it might feel foreign when paired with Subaru’s boxer engines. Subaru builds their suvs for everyday all-terrain usage and when pushed otherwise they don’t typically make you feel like Denny Hamlin, unless of course you go for their turbo engines which will often comes with the best type of transmission.

      It came down to the fact we wanted a wagon and there were 2 in our budget. The Golf Alltrack/Sportwagen twins and the Outback (if you consider it a wagon). The Buick, Audi, Mercedes, BMW, etc wagons were out of budget. This is the state of wagons in America.

    When I got my last Subaru, I almost didn't even take it for a test drive. I was getting it for the AWD, decent gas mileage, EXCELLENT safety ratings, etc. I figured I would deal with whatever else it gave me, ha. It was a good car. I will likely be getting my second Subaru for the same reasons, and again, the minor things I will deal with whatever they may be in order to have the things that make Subarus special. =)

    I'm Aussie & last year bought a 2017 3.6r with 150, 000 kms, I overall love her to death. She had a couple of things that needed to be fixed (minor) & I have a some niggles which seemed to be gone & addressed by the Outback XT which was only released here this year 😕😞 Point being for a second-hand car with decent Kms plus all the bells, whistles and a tow pack, she eats nearly everything asked of her without any problems (also being in a small country town my mechanic loves Subies, big plus) The difference in roads she's had to cope with include dirt, mud, potholes that eat cars for fun, highway, corners with reverse cambers (like they're not supposed to be that way) sudden changes in surfaces, she's done a bit of rock climbing (completely unexpected that one), carpark nightmare event courses and even a round trip from the border between NSW (where we live) to the coastline of SA via Melbourne VIC & Sydney as well. Fully loaded with 4 adults, 1 small dog and massive amounts of luggage.
    My husband and daughter-in-law shared the driving, they picked the same niggles as me, aside from that she didn't chew as much petrol (it's not gas people!!!!!!!!!!🤨) as was expected & was very comfy except for said niggles & my daughter-in-law has a problem with the steering wheel. Which is one of those really odd niggles that most of us wouldn't notice. Again the whole seating thing seems to be fixed along with that issue. I do have puddle & see me home, which I love & I've just had her suspension, brakes, brushes and tires done with her service. The tires are now All terrain and 😱 OMG!!!!!! the difference is amazing, she just sticks to anything at almost any speed in any weather now.
    It's the difference between riding a pony for children and a racehorse X cross-country track horse!!! She basically just wants to have the road thrown at her simply to show what she can do! Specially on those bad corners and potholes. Plus we both love sitting on the cruise control & having people pass us, because obviously the speed limit isn't for them, only to find we're right on their hammer with the next hill and haven't even broken a sweat. Anyhoo, for now I can't afford a new XT Tourer & with what my Princess (yes thauher name & if you say anything, we'll both bite your leg off) can do & if I take a long trip by myself, I can sleep in the back even with my bits and pieces, she'll do well for a few more years😊😁 ❤️🎉🇦🇺

    My folks have a 2017 Outback 2.5 4-cyl, and I don't enjoy the handling or CVT. I would consider an older 2009-14 3.6R with 5EAT. Can't really expect something like this to handle. It's a purpose-built war wagon, especially the 3.6.

    The 3.6 was great until they went to the CVT trans. The 2012 outback with the normal automatic transmission can take abuse and have a lot of torque for towing and off roading

      The Gen 4 was an improvement in some ways, more refined, better interior, more space over the gen 3. But having driven Generation 3, 4, and 5, I prefer gen 3 for its small size and nimble handling. Gen 5 is a big improvement over gen 4 when comparing chassis rigidity. A 100,000 mile gen 5 will be much quieter than a gen 4 with similar miles.

      I have a 2019 Subaru outback 3.6R with 110K miles and I’m on the 2nd transmission it is cheap junk not worth 40 thousand dollars of my money one bit

    I have a 2013 Subaru Outback 3.6 R and I love my car! I love the power it has, its smooth ride. Handles well in all terrains and weather. There are so many perks on this car, that it's difficult to understand all the negatives things you are saying. Your dialect suggests you're a half glass empty kind of person.

    I have a 2011 3.6r and pretty much all of these problems dont applied to mine. The seats are different that the newer ones and feel pretty comfortable and I have a 5spd. I will say the gas mileage isnt amazing so i can relate there but it drives sporty pretty well. Seems the newer ones are worse.

      They made the newer ones bigger while continuing to use the same steel frames. 2019 3.6r weighs 12% more than the 2011 with the exact same 256hp output

      Part of that is additional tech, sound deadening, etc. The 2011-2019 are the same car underneath

It's part number 20451VA000 for the bar and 20464VA000 (2 needed) for the bushings. The cost is about $85, is easily installed, and dramatically improves understeer.

      Yes, I have had 3 Outbacks (2014, 2016, & 2018) and each one I put a 19mm rear sway bar on -- it COMPLETELY changes the driving experience. Still rides nice and smooth but corners flat. Did the same thing to a 2017 Forester XT (which I hated because of the body roll in just normal driving) and it was like a completely different vehicle.

    I have a 2018 OB 3.6 and love it, you must be driving something else. On very long drives the seats do got uncomfortable but everything else you said is not true

    I added a white line rear sway bar ($250) - a nice upgrade. Also put on a 1.5" lift and King heavy springs because its just too low, Id like better shocks. I dont like the throttle response, its sluggy, my pet peeve - my trans is the 2013 automatic... I kinda wish I had gone with the 2.5 turbo, more options for mods...

    I get disappointed some engines don't get much better fuel economy with the amount of power they have, my car is like that. Its got a good amount of power, but not as much as others I could've gotten, and the fuel economy isnt impressive. Im sticking with it though, its good otherwise!

      I worked for a Subaru dealer at the time, so yes. Also, we test drove it alongside a Forester for comparison. Again, as mentioned in the video, we didn't/don't have many wagon choices in the US in general(not that I consider this a wagon, IMO it's not because it rides as high as an SUV), before even taking budget into account.

      I don't think comfortable seats should be a luxury exclusive item. Nissan has apparently figured it out with zero gravity seats but their cars are affordable. It's important especially for people with bad backs, so I think Subaru could do better with that. Not that a single video criticism may push Subaru to change things, but it might? Who knows.

      Thanks! I have not driven the new turbo engine, but I expect it to be very similar to the 3.6. The power is nearly identical as is the weight. You may get slightly better fuel economy, but I wouldn't expect much.

      XT is QUICK! It takes where the 3.6R was and hits notes that are even higher. Where the 3.6R stops in the high RPM range, the 2020 2.4XT goes. Handling is much of the same, but you would be impressed if the 3.6R high end hp isn’t enough. I was very pleased with the 3.6R in terms of power with the 5EAT. Perhaps the CVT makes it slower. I also got 30 mpg with the 5EAT-the 3.6R is a highway car

      It’s nothing like the 3.6. I have that and just drove the Onyx. You want a fun car get the onyx. If you are going to lift and mod for soft road travel get a 3.6 if you can find it.

    I’m sorry but o don’t agree these car are great I have a 2010 4 cylinder which is great it’s my fifth Subaru you should have done research before you leased it there are cards out there that are worse in my opinion but I hope you find a car that meets your standards.

      First, while you would probably like the newer 2015 and up models, you are correct, there are worse cars out there. Second, apparently you haven't watched my other two videos. Across my 3 videos covering my Outback, I mentioned that we were looking for an AWD wagon that was somewhat fun to drive. That simply doesn't exist in the US and so we had to settle for something that was not 100% to our liking. Unfortunately, no car is 100% perfect for everyone, there is always a compromise. I'd venture to guess that there is probably something you'd like to change about your 2010 if you had the chance. Thanks for watching!

    Good review! I was looking for a real world assessment of the fuel economy on the 3.6R as well as seat of the pants power. It did seem like the output was a little low for the engine size, and it doesn't seem to have the fuel economy to offset that low output.
    I had a 2011 Maxima a long time ago and that car worked great with 3.5L and CVT combo. Fast, easy to drive, crappy fuel economy though. I was hoping the Outback would be maybe slower with better fuel economy, or both quick and frugal. Alas.

      Unfortunately it's both show and inefficient. On the plus side, it's not very stressed mechanically like say a high power 2.0L turbo making 300-400hp, so it should have pretty good reliability in the long run

    I have a 2019 Subaru outback 3.6R with 110K miles and I’m on the 2nd transmission it is cheap junk not worth 40 thousand dollars of my money one bit

      Slamming into drive while still rolling in Reverse... Over stressing drivetrain by towing excessive weight... driving in freezing conditions then not servicing more often etc... many ways to neglect the transmission.

      You can't drive a CVT like a you would drive a conventional automatic. If you floor the accelerator, the CVT will drop to an overly low ratio that results in "all rev and no go" because the engine is out of its maximum torque range. The longer you hold it on the floor, the more disappointing the result will be. Treat a CVT like it's your sister rather than your [insert your favorite term for someone you sleep with but don't respect], and it is much more satisfying. For maximum "go" it is necessary to keep revs of the 3.6 at 4200-4300 (the top of the torque curve) and let the CVT work likes it's supposed to. Flooring it will rev the engine higher, and the torque will drop off significantly.

With this CVT, anything more than about 50% throttle and the transmission will then pick a 6 set ratios to shift through similar to a normal automatic to help the engine go through its normal rev range and I actually like that about it.     Yes the seats , the small holes get clogged with every spec of dirt , the passenger seat has no height adjustment that sucks , riding in the second row I find noisy. We have a 2019 touring Outback 3.6 , and the variable transmission sucks also, like a rubber and

      In general? I had a good experience with mine, but the early models (2017) had some issues. The units were produced by either Clarion or Harmon Kardon, not Subaru. I think eventually they sorted most of it out.

    Bad seats? You cheap shit, you bought garbage! My seat with leather is great 8 years later!
    You also got small wheels and cheap tires...so yes bad handling...mine is great because I bought the bigger wheels and fancy tires!My transmission is great...no problem there...PERFECT! brakes? what's your problem? My brakes are perfect! My 3.6 engine burn a bit more fuel, but got a lot of power too! Mine is perfect and have zero problem with my Subaru Outback 3.6The expensive version)
