Most dogs can learn to find truffles. A dog like this sounds perfect.
Its a breed likes english fox hound
Learned more from the dog than you two.... Useless
You're giving ZERO useful information!!! You're just showing us truffles!!!
What can I say Will try harder in future 🙏

Thank you very much kind friend
Thank you very much for your generosity in sharing all this knowledge. I have heard that truffles are often found in the remains of old bonfires, do you know if this is a myth or if it could be beneficial to add ash to these spore nests?
Hello and thank you, we are all so fortunate to have a platform to share these unusual bits of information we pick up from living close to the earth and trees and to be able to connect with others who have or would like to have a similar connection to our fascinating ecosystems. What you have heard is correct in a sense, fires and ensuing ash can raise the pH of the soil which makes it more suitable for truffle growth. However if the trees are badly burned , they lose their vitality and won't produce the sugars and other nutrients necessary for truffle growth. Morels also love burned forests!
Tuber gibbosum 😂😂😂😂 un'altra vera schifezza.
Tuber oregonese????😂😂😂😂😂😂 in Italia quella si chiama caciola . Neanche i nostri cani la mangiano. Americani 🫣🫣🫣😱

would you say a french bulldog is a good truffle dog? im almost done with training him and im very happy of how he is doing.
I have never worked with a bulldog or come across one as a truffle dog, so cannot say. However I do know that the breed is highly trainable and smart and like all dogs has a strong sense of smell. There may be challenges however- French bulldogs are brachycephalic (flat-faced) which can limit their airflow and cause them to tire more easily so Intensive or extended periods of scent work might be too much for them. Also the breed is not known for its prey drive- a trait we usually look for in a truffle dog. That said, it is often down to the individual dog and if you like a challenge and want to keep your intelligent friend active and stimulated, I would certainly give it a try. And I'd be very interested to hear how you get on!
Great stuff. I have a 21 month old Lagotto, and my experience mirrors that of Jesse in the video. I began training at six months old, in the house, outside, and then my orchards. By December, Lotti could find truffle, though remaimed easily distracted, and would as a preference, prefer sliding down hill sides on his back rather than hunt. I brought in a friend with experienced dogs (his mum and uncle) to shadow, though initially, he wanted to barrel boisterously into them at speed. Eventually, pennies dropped and Lotti began to gain more focus. This year, school is a different story, he's on point, focused and loves it, finding hidden truffle very quickly and with great excitement upon doing so. (I hide fresh pieces of truffle inside pierced kinder eggs. and reward him with loads of praise, enthusiasm and mature cheddar cheese)). And so I'm looking forward to this winter season. Lotti's ready and good to go
Thank you, it is interesting to hear how many people have had similar experiences until as you say, the penny drops. Hope that you and Lotti have a great season!
Howdy Julie. So two years with Jesse, how the time has flown. I remember when you first git her. And the little set backs when re addressing some discipline issues. But she looks great now. It will be interesting when she gets a few years older and starts to be part of the " teaching " staff. My thoughts from watching your videos on her is i don't believe the Loggoto would be a recommended first timers Truffle dog. It would be like learning how to drive a car for the first time but with a Ferrari 😂. Now I'll give you a update on my health. Ne,t Saturday it will be one year since they rushed me to the hospital where i almost died. 3 days latter they amputated my right leg. That might sound bad but i don't think so. Yesterday for the first time since then i actually drove my car. FREEDOM 🎉😂. I now look at Halloween week as a celebration of life, a new beginning. Im beginning to be able to walk more. And i believe ill be able to walk around enough to finally get my pup( boy is my cat going to upset about THAT! ) Im planning on attending the Truffle festival in Oregon. And it definitely means ill be able to go salmon fishing this next spring. So yuppers a celebration of life. Have a great day.
WHich breed you suggest for a beginner?...I think a English cocker is a good choice especially if it is a female..What do you think?
Well hi there Victor. Yes the time has sped by and I will definitely be documenting the rest of Jessie's career. At the moment the idea of her as a teacher is very amusing, she would be the teacher who lets all the kids run wild on the school trip, handing out beers and letting them smoke at the back of the bus. Great to hear that you are looking at these changes in your life with such positivity and I am positive we will meet up in Oregon some time soon!
Yes a cocker is a good choice for a beginner or a lab. Whatever the breed though, training takes time and a lot of effort!
Nice video😉, I really liked. It has remminded me when I started training my dog 3 years ago with the same problems and situations as you😂. Greetings from Spain
Yes these problems do seem to be fairly common. I hope you managed to overcome them. What did you do to solve your training issues?
@@TheRealTruffleHunters I finally overcome them😄 My main problem was the part when I had to go with my dog to find real truffles in the forest, durig the trainnings It was very easy to work with my dog, however she didn’t find any truffle the first season, I was so frustated, because she associated my smell with the truffles during the trainnings and she did’t find the real ones. The next year she finally did It, I was very patient because I knew that the dog was able to do it. Last season she did it awesome. In 1 month starts here in Spain the season, I think that is going to be a bad season because of the lack of storms in summer, but I am looking foward to go with my dog to see it. 😁😁
Congrats on the progress, and thank you for the update. I have a question though, can you train the dogs to sniff out ripe truffles, or do they just dig up all truffles? I went on a truffle walk with a guy in Germany, his dog found many tuber aestivum or maybe uncinatum. The thing was, most of the trufflles were very light in the flesh and they had very little / almost no aroma. I have a feeling they were not yet fully ripe. We hunted in the end of August. I wish you good luck for the upcoming season 👍🤞
Thank you! Truffles will start to emit their famed odours when they are ripe, this is so they will be found and eaten by wild animals when their spores are mature. So if a dog sniffed them out, then these paler truffles were probably ripe but not at peak ripeness. It sounds like you witnessed the unearthing of some early season uncinatum. Mid-season truffles tend to be a lot more fragrant
Is there tips on finding them without dogs
I wouldn't recommend. Jackie. Raking around in the undergrowth may turn up a few truffles but these will be unripe and have zero culinary value. Also raking destroys the soil structure particularly the mycellium which takes years to form. So it's best all round to use a hound
@@TheRealTruffleHunters got it, thanks
Aren't bloodhounds and beagles ranked #1 and #2 for scent detection work? Why don't you use them? I'm curious because you said you do this professionally. Narcotics puppies sometimes have their toys scented with the smell they are going to detect to get them started early. Do you do anything like that? This channel is awesome by the way.
Thanks! Bloodhounds and beagles could certainly be used to find truffles. I would be interested in a training beagle. The bloodhound however is a different matter, it may have the best nose but I don't think this edge would make up for it's heavy build. A good truffle dog should be athletic enough to run up and down slopes and be able to navigate dense forests. I imagine a bloodhound would struggle here! Hope this answers your question!
Hi friends. Very interesting and helpful. Thank you. Which country are you from?
Thank you, I am from Liverpool in the UK. How about you?
Thank you, Ma'am 🇵🇷.

Can you use frozen truffles will it work?
Yes, frozen truffles are entirely useless in the kitchen but fine for training purposes. Refreeze after each session
Any recommendations on species that would be suited to wet western Washington state? I want to try this out but am worried about the soil. I know I can add lime to adjust the PH but i'm not sure "well drained" is a thing when we get so much rain. Maybe I could install some french drains to help or plant on a slope?
I would research your Oregon species and see if they lend themselves to cultivation. Rain is good as long as the trees are in a sunny spot and it is not boggy!
@@TheRealTruffleHunters Thanks i've seen mixed results about being able to cultivate them and also that they spoil really quickly. With your Brumale's how long do you have before they start to go off? I think I'm going to experiment with multiple species and see what takes.
I thought this would be more informative...
Sorry about that!
Hello beautiful 😍 let’s go camping ⛺️

@@TheRealTruffleHunters thank you very much🙏
Are there no good varieties in the north east forests of the US?
I am sorry to say that I don't have a great deal of knowledge about the US truffle species. At a push I'd say the tuber canaliculatum would be your best bet!
Thanks!
Thanks a lot for the informative video! One question: does the dog have to be a puppy when trained? I have a dog that's 1.5 years old and would love to try and teach her this, but I'm worried that it might be a little too late... Thanks!
We have had success with much older dogs than this, it really does seem to be down to the individual animal. Give it a try, see if she enjoys it and make the whole process a lot of fun. Smart dogs love having something to do and this is an activity that really allows them to indulge their natural behaviours so she might take to it straight away
Thank you! I have a 2 month old Laika - hunting dog when should i start training him for truffles? Basic stuff is very good ( sit, lay, paw, bark and so on)
Start now getting the puppy used to the smell of truffles and encourage him to use his nose when you are playing. We usually start proper training around six months old . I have some videos on this channel where we do pre-training exercises. Good luck with Laika!
Thank you for your youtube xxxx 💟🙏🕉 xxx
Thank you Andrew for taking the time to write!
About 14 years ago I build a lot of clay banks on our farm in Ireland and planted 6000 hazel for copice on top. I am thrilled to hear that it seems one can inoculate the roots after germination, did I get that right? My Jack Russell is already trained on truffles from puppy age, I would really like to get him to work some day.
Wow that's a lot of hazels. In the wild, we see that roots of older trees have become inoculated with truffle mycelium all the time. This lead to us experimenting with spores and established trees in hazel groves and this has been successful. Whether this can be replicated on your farm will depend on a few different factors. If your soil is fairly alkali (pH 7+) you are off to a good start. I imagine you know your soil and its composition well. Heavy clay soils aren't great for truffle growth they need decent drainage. You probably also know that tuber aestivum - the black summer truffle - is regularly found in Ireland and as your dog is trained and ready, sounds like you'll want to get cracking. How exciting! Good luck!!
@@TheRealTruffleHunters thank you for your reply. The clay in the banks is pretty well drained, as it is a bank and also airated fairly good, because after those years the is plenty of organic activity taking place within. It is mulched by foliage and any debris branches we occasionally pile on there. I will have to measure the Ph levels again, it's been a while. I will have a dig around if I can get the dog to indicate. Do you have any tips for what source material I should use to inoculate as seen in your video? I could probably find some local truffles, I hear some people are finding them in a few different places here in the West.
Very interesting ideas Julie… hope it goes well
Thanks Dave. Have you thought any more about dog breeds?
Guess what we are doing in The Black Sea region of Turkiye which holds the %75 of world's hazelnut forests and production. And yes it works especially for Brumale. Trying to inoculate Aestivum too. We will see. :)
Take your dog in late January around the hazel orchards, choose the ones that don't till the earth. There are some areas around the Black Sea that will be a gold mine for tuber brumale, beautiful limestone bedrock in parts and large calcium deposits. Coupled with this you have thousands of years of hazelnut growing tradition. Turkey was one of the places I had in mind when I made this video so I was very happy to get your comment!
Keep up the good work!
I’ll enjoy seeing the progress of your experiments for years to come.
Howdy young lady. Interesting we have chatted about this subject in the past. Through your videos and other resources plus my already horticulture knowledge i have a few thoughts. Before i discuss i have to say i hope i can sit down with you and your husband and talk about this subject while drinking sone Oregon and Washington wines, eating salmon and other smoked foods some day. Ok,so have you heard of Permacultere? It is a holistic view of horticulture. So focusing on trees that produce "mast"( nuts like walnuts, oaks and filberts aka Hazel nut trees). Yes these hardwood tree's are familiar tree's with truffle fungus. And the falling nuts are a huge amount of very nutritious food sources for wild and domestic animals. A person could do what necessary to prune and improve the old orchard for the benefit of the tree's and fungus making it easier to get in and harvest the truffles. But wait, there's more. Lets say you bring in some pigs at the proper time to thin out certain competing weeds and other none desirable plants, feeding this pigs, especially those nuts, to make better tasting and healthier pork by eating all those nuts? Of course you would need to be careful as to when the pigs were in the orchard. You don't want them digging up the truffles. As to inoculation i still feel firmly the the spores will do better going through a mammals intestines and being deposited in manure. This also helps the trees get THEIR fertilizer helping THEM be healthier and more productive. And the good news is you don't need to own or operate a pig farm. Find the right pig farmer and cooperate together and you both benefit along with the land owners. Im considering a similar situation with our Douglas Fir forests and cotton wood forests we have here in Washington and Oregon. There's no need to create new orchards to start the process. We literally have thousands, maybe millions of forests that are already in place and with a little help be productive. You have the advantage of those nuts though. Firs and cotton wood don't produce those valuable nuts. Think about this. And hopefully some day we can sit down and enjoy a great chat about this subject. Have a great day and good luck. 😀🌤👍🍷
Hi Victor, I know you have a lot of knowledge on the subject and some very valuable insights so it'd be a great experience to chat with you over a plate or two of salmon !
We used to keep pigs in the past and still have our pen ready for new occupants - it is worth considering although I have had experience with a truffle pig and it did not go well! There is an interesting study about insects and how they help in the spore cycle if you fancy a read www.researchgate.net/publication/364217597_Mycorrhizal_fungi_and_invertebrates_Impacts_on_Tuber_melanosporum_ascospore_dispersal_and_lifecycle_by_isopod_mycophagy

Hello from Michigan land of the Tuber canaliculatum.. well figured I'd give you a update.. didn't train much over the summer I'm a bee keeper so I get busy.. started training again and she remembered those sausages that's for sure. I bury tinfoil truffle balls for training it's not even a challenge anymore. She gets with in 25 ' she's right into it .. they say season runs Aug thru November.. does that mean they start to grow in Aug ? How long does it take a truffle to grow? . I noticed that our Aspen trees need high pH so does the hemlock and dog wood. Red dogwood needs 8 pH or higher. So if I see those trees should be good area for pH anyway. We did scout 200 miles north lots of beechnut and huge boulders of lime stone sticking out of the ground.. been going out every morning to start the day . Seems like the dog is hunting truffles all the time she's looking for sausage treats takes it seriously.. all beef hot dogs I'll cook her steak she starts finding them.. it's been really wet summer for honey production so hopefully it's good for truffles.. wow what a awesome start for y'all congratulations
These are impressive results - you have truly understood the importance of the high quality treat! August will be the start of the season, though novice dogs may have difficulties with the earlier truffles which are often not as aromatic -so keep at it. You might also find you have some issues transitioning from buried to wild truffles - let me know if you do. Hope you and your girl are chowing down on steaks before the year is out!
