HI guys... what fun with the dogs... great video. Truffles yumm ❤
Do you sell the truffle cuts/peels we can use by any chance?
I don't sell but can send you some depending on where you are based!
@TheRealTruffleHunters thank you so much :) we are based in Suffolk, UK, not sure if that is too far! Xx
@@elizavetastepanishina8194 email me with your address julie@realtrufflehunters.com and I can send you some next time I am in the UK. Happy New Year!
Do you still send out truffle spores? That would be so cool.
Yes we always have spores to send. Whether we can send depends on where you are in the world 🌍
@I’m in Germany
@@rofl970 Great I can send you spores in the new year. email me your address julie@realtrufflehunters.com
I've been teaching my GSD how to find truffles and I'm at the the find stage (still inside). My dog will do all the previous stages perfect but he will not attempt to uncover the truffle foil ball, he will only point at it with his nose and sometimes just hold his nose on it.. I've been using towels and shirts to cover the foil ball and it doesn't seem to be much effect, I've tried teaching a command word once he approaches the truffles and using that to try and get him to dig but he only just smells them through the shirt/towel and waits to be awarded. How do I get passed this obstacle or maybe teach him how to indicate instead if he refuses to search and dig?
Hi if you want to email me julie@realtrufflehunters.com, I will give you the secret, I am planning on making a video on this next year so prefer not to leave the whole technique in the comments!
May🙏🙏🙏
I'm very grateful for your efforts putting out content, you're really helping to educate budding truffle foragers.
Thank you, I also appreciate you taking the time to comment - that's very thoughtful of you!
Great video the only thing i would ad is that dogs are place learners. They learn a behaviour at a location and don't generalise. So when going to a new location initially you have to lower your expectations. The famous phrase:" but at home he performs perfectly". Therefore start variating the training places as soon as possible.
Can i clarify for the slurry, after mixing all of the solution, i sieve out the water? Then the slurry thick thing is mix into soil to plant with the tree/sappling? And that water i can dilute in water with ratio 100ml + 10L to water them?
No need to sieve the water, from the slurry it will be absorbed. The liquid I use to water the saplings is the slurry mix further diluted with spring water, the gently raked into the ground!
@ thanks for the tips! 2 days ago we brought our 4months old weimaraner for a real truffle hunting in a friend's farm, she found worth 190grams of perigord! The owner was so impressed he joked he wants to buy our puppy 🤣. Thank you so much for your other video on how to train them to sniff truffles! Your techniques were so clear and it works so fast for the puppies to learn!
@@ShirleyTjandra It's always great to hear people's results, so thanks a bunch for taking the time to comment. Above all though, congratulations!!
Nice video thanks!

What species of truffle are you looking for?
Summer truffles and tuber borchii
1:17 every Chef I’ve ever talked to said that EVOO is way too strong a flavor to be using to make truffle oil out of
Exactly. Reputable truffle oil makers like La rustichella uses quality olive oil due to its Mild taste but not evoo. They could if they wanted.
Leave them alone!
I’m picturing this😅Whoever made them edible and expensive was betting with his friends to gain money out of rocks or dirt!😂 “who is the best salesman. Anyone who can sell dirt?” Says Tom Sawyer (My interesting scenario😅) the rest is history! I’m just guessing why would people even eat this🤢🤤

Hello, I love truffles and your videos even more. Is the laggoto a good dog for a first time dog owner and a beginner truffle hunter and is Buckinghamshire a good place to truffle hunt. Thank you very much. Good luck truffle hunting
Thank you so much for writing to me. The lagotto can be a tricky dog for a first time dog owner, a good breeder with solid knowledge of the parents' temperaments is a must! As with all breeds the most important factor is that the dog is a good fit for you and your lifestyle. Lagotti are working dogs so they need activity! As for Buckinghamshire, there are plenty of chalk soils, Chiltern Hills etc. so I would say it's an ideal place really!
❤❤❤❤❤❤🫶💯👌
Super cool, thank you.
First, I want to say that you have created an absolutely fantastic channel, and I enjoy your videos !😊😊 I have some questions about training a dog: 1. Do you use a specific command when you go truffle hunting so that the dog knows it’s not just a regular walk? 2. Do you use a specific type of truffle that matches the one it needs to find, or does it not matter (for example, will it be able to find Tuber Brumale if it has been trained with the scent of Tuber melanosporum)?
Thank you very much, I am glad you have enjoyed these truffle videos. 1. Yes, we keep everything specific to truffle hunting - commands, treats. clothes etc 2. It seems that we are training dogs to find sulphides rather than a particular species of truffle. . Our dogs have turned up brumale without ever having been trained on their scent. And all kinds of nasty truffles for that matter. However, if you have a fresh truffle of the species you intend to hunt, that is without doubt the best way to start, especially factoring in that some dogs seem to generalise less between odours!
@TheRealTruffleHunters Thank you Julie! Great response, and thanks for making the time to answer, much appreciated ☺️
You made som cash
These truffles are pretty cheap. I think they were selling for 120 euros/kilo. The price can drop to 60/kg.
My god look at the size of those black diamonds 😮
Hey I’m in Washington and need buyers, can you help??
For US truffles the first question is always "How were they harvested?"
I’m in Washington and really need buyers.. we get about 5 lbs a day. Can you help?
It depends on how the truffle was harvested. There is a demand for truffles sniffed out by a dog. Raked truffles are pulled from the ground regardless of maturity and most have zero culinary value. Truffles DON'T ripen once unearthed. Raking also destroys the mycellium and can affect future production. Let me know if I can help you either shift dog harvested truffles or train a dog now you know where to find a good supply!
Hi!! Great videos, thank you for the info!! I am in Washington and need a buyer! Can you help? Or have any ideas??
Thank you friend . Are you finding truffles with a dog?
Can I know if Weimaraner would have the same strong sense of smell like the german shorthaired pointer?
Both dogs are very skilled scent hounds but there are some differences in their abilities. The Weimaraner often has a higher prey drive and works independently whereas the GSP seems to enjoy cooperation more. I think the Weimaraner may need more guidance than the GSP in order to become a focused truffle dog and that the latter would be easier to train.
@ thanks!!! Im training my 3 months weim now, she seems to be picking it up well as i try to incorporate other smells scents in the training area
Nice vid, cute doggy. Just, the burgers...I don't like to give unsolicited advice but ....your burgers could be so much better if you cooked them in a pan. No oil, and definitely never squish the burger down through the grate. I know it looks good, kinda like some fast food painted stripes, but you actually don't want that. Leads only to dry burgers that are more akin to hockey pucks. Only salt and pepper prep, and a pan so the burger retains the juices. Pro tip.
You are so right , those burgers are a disgrace. Far worse is some rice I made in another outdoor video - that's a real shocker. Tips much appreciated 👍
Damn what’s her social media 😋 she looking sooo good
Great video, very interesting. I think I stumbled across a truffle sticking out of the ground, but unfortunately I didn't realize what it was until just now. Would it be a safe bet that I can find more truffles around the same spot? Do I need to get a dog, since I know the spot, or can I try digging for them myself?
You should get a dog for this task.Often those early season truffles grow semi above ground. They don't have much of an aroma and we often spot them and the dogs can't sniff them - no sulphides yet. As season progresses, truffle quality improves, they become more fragrant and are deeper underground. You need a dog to sniff them out. If you use a rake you will destroy the mycellium and future truffle production also the truffles you rake up may be immature and have zero culinary value! Also yes go back at the same time of year and check the place out again!
Very nice and helpful video, thx👍
🇨🇦😎🙌❤️🔥
Training would have gone faster if you had used more Italian language with her
Good point!!
@TheRealTruffleHunters your videos are delightful and your style beautiful!
My friend give me bulgarian hound dog breed. Can i learn the dog for truffles they have very good scent also the breed is for working special for wild boars
Most dogs can learn to find truffles. A dog like this sounds perfect.
Its a breed likes english fox hound
Learned more from the dog than you two.... Useless
You're giving ZERO useful information!!! You're just showing us truffles!!!
What can I say Will try harder in future 🙏
safe truffle hunting miss.. awesome..
Thank you very much kind friend
Thank you very much for your generosity in sharing all this knowledge. I have heard that truffles are often found in the remains of old bonfires, do you know if this is a myth or if it could be beneficial to add ash to these spore nests?
Hello and thank you, we are all so fortunate to have a platform to share these unusual bits of information we pick up from living close to the earth and trees and to be able to connect with others who have or would like to have a similar connection to our fascinating ecosystems. What you have heard is correct in a sense, fires and ensuing ash can raise the pH of the soil which makes it more suitable for truffle growth. However if the trees are badly burned , they lose their vitality and won't produce the sugars and other nutrients necessary for truffle growth. Morels also love burned forests!
Tuber gibbosum 😂😂😂😂 un'altra vera schifezza.
Tuber oregonese????😂😂😂😂😂😂 in Italia quella si chiama caciola . Neanche i nostri cani la mangiano. Americani 🫣🫣🫣😱
Ci sono tuber oregonense in Italia?
The thumbnail makes it look like your dog turned into a truffle.
Omg please save me a seat
would you say a french bulldog is a good truffle dog? im almost done with training him and im very happy of how he is doing.
I have never worked with a bulldog or come across one as a truffle dog, so cannot say. However I do know that the breed is highly trainable and smart and like all dogs has a strong sense of smell. There may be challenges however- French bulldogs are brachycephalic (flat-faced) which can limit their airflow and cause them to tire more easily so Intensive or extended periods of scent work might be too much for them. Also the breed is not known for its prey drive- a trait we usually look for in a truffle dog. That said, it is often down to the individual dog and if you like a challenge and want to keep your intelligent friend active and stimulated, I would certainly give it a try. And I'd be very interested to hear how you get on!
Great stuff. I have a 21 month old Lagotto, and my experience mirrors that of Jesse in the video. I began training at six months old, in the house, outside, and then my orchards. By December, Lotti could find truffle, though remaimed easily distracted, and would as a preference, prefer sliding down hill sides on his back rather than hunt. I brought in a friend with experienced dogs (his mum and uncle) to shadow, though initially, he wanted to barrel boisterously into them at speed. Eventually, pennies dropped and Lotti began to gain more focus. This year, school is a different story, he's on point, focused and loves it, finding hidden truffle very quickly and with great excitement upon doing so. (I hide fresh pieces of truffle inside pierced kinder eggs. and reward him with loads of praise, enthusiasm and mature cheddar cheese)). And so I'm looking forward to this winter season. Lotti's ready and good to go
Thank you, it is interesting to hear how many people have had similar experiences until as you say, the penny drops. Hope that you and Lotti have a great season!
Howdy Julie. So two years with Jesse, how the time has flown. I remember when you first git her. And the little set backs when re addressing some discipline issues. But she looks great now. It will be interesting when she gets a few years older and starts to be part of the " teaching " staff. My thoughts from watching your videos on her is i don't believe the Loggoto would be a recommended first timers Truffle dog. It would be like learning how to drive a car for the first time but with a Ferrari 😂. Now I'll give you a update on my health. Ne,t Saturday it will be one year since they rushed me to the hospital where i almost died. 3 days latter they amputated my right leg. That might sound bad but i don't think so. Yesterday for the first time since then i actually drove my car. FREEDOM 🎉😂. I now look at Halloween week as a celebration of life, a new beginning. Im beginning to be able to walk more. And i believe ill be able to walk around enough to finally get my pup( boy is my cat going to upset about THAT! ) Im planning on attending the Truffle festival in Oregon. And it definitely means ill be able to go salmon fishing this next spring. So yuppers a celebration of life. Have a great day.
WHich breed you suggest for a beginner?...I think a English cocker is a good choice especially if it is a female..What do you think?
Well hi there Victor. Yes the time has sped by and I will definitely be documenting the rest of Jessie's career. At the moment the idea of her as a teacher is very amusing, she would be the teacher who lets all the kids run wild on the school trip, handing out beers and letting them smoke at the back of the bus. Great to hear that you are looking at these changes in your life with such positivity and I am positive we will meet up in Oregon some time soon!
Yes a cocker is a good choice for a beginner or a lab. Whatever the breed though, training takes time and a lot of effort!
Nice video😉, I really liked. It has remminded me when I started training my dog 3 years ago with the same problems and situations as you😂. Greetings from Spain
Yes these problems do seem to be fairly common. I hope you managed to overcome them. What did you do to solve your training issues?
@@TheRealTruffleHunters I finally overcome them😄 My main problem was the part when I had to go with my dog to find real truffles in the forest, durig the trainnings It was very easy to work with my dog, however she didn’t find any truffle the first season, I was so frustated, because she associated my smell with the truffles during the trainnings and she did’t find the real ones. The next year she finally did It, I was very patient because I knew that the dog was able to do it. Last season she did it awesome. In 1 month starts here in Spain the season, I think that is going to be a bad season because of the lack of storms in summer, but I am looking foward to go with my dog to see it. 😁😁
Congrats on the progress, and thank you for the update. I have a question though, can you train the dogs to sniff out ripe truffles, or do they just dig up all truffles? I went on a truffle walk with a guy in Germany, his dog found many tuber aestivum or maybe uncinatum. The thing was, most of the trufflles were very light in the flesh and they had very little / almost no aroma. I have a feeling they were not yet fully ripe. We hunted in the end of August. I wish you good luck for the upcoming season 👍🤞
Thank you! Truffles will start to emit their famed odours when they are ripe, this is so they will be found and eaten by wild animals when their spores are mature. So if a dog sniffed them out, then these paler truffles were probably ripe but not at peak ripeness. It sounds like you witnessed the unearthing of some early season uncinatum. Mid-season truffles tend to be a lot more fragrant
Is there tips on finding them without dogs
I wouldn't recommend. Jackie. Raking around in the undergrowth may turn up a few truffles but these will be unripe and have zero culinary value. Also raking destroys the soil structure particularly the mycellium which takes years to form. So it's best all round to use a hound
@@TheRealTruffleHunters got it, thanks
