Moving My Studio - Part 1
This is part 1 of a series of videos where I'll be documenting the task of moving my studio. I am moving from a space that I have been working out of for 19 years into a long-term temporary space, and then finally into my brand new permanent studio.

"Friend or Foe" will depict an actual event that occurred on April 6, 1926 and involved a pilot name Franklin Rose. Rose was a pilot for Varney Airlines which was contracted to fly the mail between Pasco, WA and Boise, ID. On that afternoon Rose was piloting his Curtiss C6 powered Swallow from Elko to Pasco as one half of the inaugural flight for that service (pilot Leon Cuddeback was flying th...

Creating quality representational art often requires a lot of preparation and planning before the brush ever touches the canvas. Drawing skills are a necessary, of course, but we artist need quality photographic references to guide us. Here is a look behind the curtain to see where we western artists gather some of our reference material for paintings.

Amazing! Thanks for posting I personally liked that "As good as it gets" as I can see you through it, really nice !
Excellent video. Thank you!
The footage of the Fokker against the sunset... Simply gorgeous.
that was a great moment.
Is there a reason for his pronunciation of "fuselage" as "fusage"?
Magnificent machine. Much bigger up close than I realized.
Where in the world do you find the rotary engines for these things?
Why always this loud background music???????
thank you, great video
The original engines were made by Oberursel factories near Frankfurt, which had acquired the licence for the French LeRhône rotary before the war. It produced 110 hp and some experienced pilots upgraded their DrIs with Clerget 130hp taken from English planes. You're doing an amazing job guys, wish we would have such replicas in Europe.
Just viewed your 'Moving My Studio' video and realized that the Hurricane Helene path included the mountains of North Carolina. I hope that your family is safe.
Enjoyed your video! And I eventually tried this on a couple of panels and had the same result with both: both were fine after 24 hours with weight applied, and for a day or so after, but then air bubbles appeared 2 to 4 inches from one or more of the edges. I thought I used plenty of GAC100 and spent a considerable amount of time getting any residual air out with a brayer, but within a few days air bubbles showed up. From your experience, what might be the possible cause? GAC 100 issue? Too little or too much? Thanks for your help!
Gr8 video Thanks
Nice work .. WW1 planes being such a theatrical collection. The national insignias, .. and the unit emblems .. very vivid.
Pretty sure i just met Fred at the Greenville airport a few weeks ago. He makes propellers for some of his planes from scratch and shapes them by hand, which is mind-blowing to me. As well as the rest of the plane entirely from scratch and in the same fashion they were made when they were built. Brilliant guy.
Almost makes ya think, I could fly that!
excellent
I say really!
WONDERFUL vid....where do the uniforms come from? and could that guy Possibly be any more Serious?!?! lol
Woundfull series. The marvelous red, white STUDEBAKER HAWK, to me is a show stopper!
Why does he keep saying fusage? I want to scream at my phone and say "it's FUSELAGE"! lol
😂 weird, since that guy knows a few things about airplaines!
@@gregrechesy4178 Just to cater to your logic, I attempted to find a definition for "fusage" and it kept telling me it was spelled "fuselage". Go figure...... It also showed the definition of FUSELAGE as "the main body of an aircraft". 😂😅😂😅
I love the Dr1. But I'll pass on flying anything that someone used a crescent wrench to install the propellor on.
And used it the wrong way...
Good luck and don't loose that last tube of teal!
How wonderful... The dedication, skill and love put into these reproductions is remarkable. Thanks to all involved.
Congrats on the moveThe physical part sucks.Fan of you and your work 4:21
"Working on it for years" ! lol I am sure he has never stopped working on it.
Absolutely beautiful!. Love the subject! How do you go about laying down the initial sketch onto the canvas?
Thanks so much. I create the drawings first, make sure everything is correct, and then I transfer the drawing to the canvas via carbon paper.
Why cant Americans pronounce Fokker its not Fauxker, theres two Fokking Ks !!
The Dr1 has always been my favorite airplane of all time.
Fascinating, I admire their commitment and zeal - but most of all, the fruits of their labor of love. Incredible planes, revived for the world to see.
Those folks were cut from a different sort of cloth, and they were not all guys, e.g. Katherine Stinson - first woman to fly the U.S. Mail and at night.
I'm confused, what's a "Fuesage?"
They flew by seat of their pants no helmets, no para shoots ,just luck and a prayer.
Great video
Amazing!!!
Makes me happy to see Fok. F.1 102/17... The second of three pre-production tripes produced. Of the three F.1's, 101/17 was maintained at the Fokker factory for testing. 102/17 was issued to Jasta 11 and was flown briefly by Manfred von Richtofen for his 60th and 61st kills before being handed over to Ltn Kurt Wolff, who was killed in the aircraft. 103/17 was issued to Jasta 10 and was flown by Ltn. Werner Voss. If was Voss who got into a dogfight with seven Se.6a's of No. 56 squadron, putting bullets through all seven before he was finally shot down and killed. Fok. Dr.1 152/17 was the third of MvR's Dr.1 triplanes (fourth if you count the F.1 pre-production ship). Fok. Dr.1 454/17 was Lothar von Richtofen's Tripe. After the first batch of Dr.1's reached Jasta 11, MvR was known to have flown 114/17, which he crashed when the Oberursel II engine threw a cylinder and knocked off the cowling, 127/17, 141/17, 152/17, 161/17, 425/17 (this was the tripe he was flying when he was killed) and 477/17. Jasta 11's 'colors' were red cowlings, wing struts and wheel covers. As stated in the video, pilots would paint their own colors and markings to identify a particular pilot's aircraft. 114/17 was painted in the factory scheme of Green streaked over doped linen with a green cowling with light blue struts and under wing and under fuselage surfaces. Starting with 127/17, MvR's tripes were painted with a progression of red on the aircraft starting with the tail surfaces as seen on 152/17 in the video. 127/17, 152/17 and 425/17 were known to progress to all red at some time during their use. All the others had a red top wing and red tail surfaces with the red extending forward on the fuselage, first to the aft edge of the white field for the cross, then to the forward edge, and then to the back edge of the cockpit.
With Baltic Birch plywood being hard to find or very expensive these days, have you tried any alternatives? I've heard Maple or Birch veneered reinforced globulus plywood is a good substitute, but I haven't tried anything. I still have some Baltic Birch plywood, but it will all eventually be used. Just trying to look ahead.
Your skill and research are impeccable. That red on Richtofen's 425/17 certainly matches my memory of the tiny, poorly lit swatch of cloth at the Air Force musem in Dayton. My favorite is your super fun self-portrait. Thanks for posting!
thanks so much
Beautifull work!
thank you
love ww1 fighters smith brings out their glory very well
thank you

🇧🇷 nunca mencionam a envergadura da fuselagem e asa dessas maravilhas??
Was it Verner Voss ?--that took on 5 -SE-5a's--in one of the greatest dogfights of all time ??--What a Legend--"du-doch-du-painted on his tail--witch means "Its not gonna be you,-that gets me !!" fantastic video !!
Hi John. Yes, it was Voss who took on the SE5's of 56 Sq in a legendary dogfight. It was Ernst Udet, however, that had "Du Doch Nicht" (Definitely not you) painted across his tail.
WOW !!-THANK YOU VERY MUCH-BEAUTIFULL PLANES !!=LOVE THE SOUND OF THOSE "ROTARY'S"--YOU ARE REALLY FLYING WITH THE SMELL OF "CASTOR-OIL"-IN YOUR FACE !@@russellsmithstudios930
@@russellsmithstudios930 And it was Udet, in a dogfight with ace Charles Guynemer, showed mercy and chivalry when the outclassed Frenchman’s guns jammed. Awaiting his fate, Guynemer was amazed to see Udet fly in formation briefly above him, inverted, waving before flying off.
My brother and I flew in to this airport in 2011, from PAE, in our dad’s Cessna 172, to spread his ashes on his mother’s grave. (You may have noticed “The Trails End” cemetery just down the road). Some of the hangers were still standing then, and the local who came out to fetch us used to keep a centurion in the hanger, which is now just a bunch of standing pilings. It’s unbelievable what the wind does to buildings in Wyoming…. and even more unbelievable the air shack is still standing. Thank you for the wonderful information about the history. We had no idea. It was the last remaining airmail air tower.
I can’t wait
There is one at the Caswell County, NC airport even today. I remember as a kid when it operated.
It was beacon #33 on the Richmond Va. - Atlanta Ga. Airway. Beacon #32 was almost across the road from the house where I grew up outside Reidsville, NC.
I shot my own video of that same site. ruclips.net/video/M1bQYG9TeWg/видео.html&pp=ygUiTWVkaWNpbmUgQm93IEludGVybmF0aW9uYWwgQWlycG9ydA%3D%3D
I'm little confused about the video title. "Fokker Scourge" was July 1915 to about early 1916 referencing to the Fokker Eindecker that had the synchronized interrupter that allowed the machine guns to fire between the propellers giving it the advantage over British and French aircraft. The Fokker Dr.1 didn't enter service until 1917. I still enjoyed this part one. I'll watch part two later. Nice video and I love WWI military aviation. Thank you for posting sir
