Really informative video, thank you so much!
thank you for all this information!!!
You are so welcome!
My filly was born with splint bones sticking out of her front legs and now it is growing proportionally to other bones, meaning it’s enlarging in size. I’ve contacted two different vets to get an opinion and been told it happens and his doesn’t affect physical health of the horse. Just wondered if you have any knowledge of horses born with splint bones showing and what is there that I can do if anything. Many thanks 🙏🏻
Thanks for your comment. This is something that I don't have the knowledge to reply confidently, have your vets done Xrays on these? As this is aside from a 'normal' splint, and is actually an abnormality - advice really needs to be given by your vet after a thorough examination including xrays/ultrasounds etc. Sorry I couldn't be of more help and good luck!
I have a horse that cribs. All of your suggestions are very helpful. But when he's turned out he is adamant about cribbing. So I've attached dog chew toys to a few of the top fence pipes that he likes to crib on. This has saved his top incisors. I've also added some plastic lattice to the top piping of his stall, this makes it difficult for him crib while in his stall. I've found that as long as he has food in a slow feeder, he does not seem stressed about not being able to easily crib in his stall. Hope that helps someone.
Very good points especially who drives innovation. And thanks for the OTTBs, I love them!
thank you. They really do make some lovely horses after retirememt
Excellent footage of symptoms. Thank you Millie and glad you got better!
You didn’t show what you said you would at the end
oops will look at that :) thanks
Yes do an ebook please!
Thank you my horse has increased his tripping after a shoeing job that left his toe too long, now I’m back with my good Farriers’s but I feel like muscle memory has caused some lingering events. What can I do to rectify this? He is a draft cross 15 yr old gelding.
Hi Lisa, It is really important to consider proprioception in recovery from anything. With shoes on the horse will have a reduced blood flow to his feet, so will have less responsiveness to changes under foot. Ideally you set up an area for him that means he must walk on many different surfaces and terrains so that he can build that proprioception back up.
But.. dosent many of these exercises kinda simulate a trailride with uneven ground? 😃 would that be just as good?
Good question. The answer is a very non committed maybe. When you are on the horses back there is an unnatural influence on the way they carry their muscles in their back due to the saddle and weight. If you have a super well fitted saddle, and are really confident that the horse will lift his back muscles in the correct way despite a rider, then yes they would help. My opinion is that they will always work more correctly for themselves without the interference of saddle and rider. The idea here is to strengthen the back enough that the rider influence is less :)
@@CazedarnesEquestriancool, thank u very much for a detailed answer! 😃
Sounds a lot like my lumbar spinal ste nosis
Very good advice
Thanks and welcome
I just bought a horse that has very little muscles in the back and the muscles at the shoulders look like this horse.
This video was the first time visiting your channel. Thank you for nicely presenting this info. Will be watching more of your videos
Thank you so much. It has been awhile since I added new ones, but this will start again shortly!
Me too, I love the red ones, especially red mares❤
So darn beautiful running with the strength and power. Horses are special
Yes they are! It really is a beautiful thing to watch!
Thanks, some good ideas here. My pony is able to look like he's working correctly when I can feel he isn't lifting through the back properly, and he is therefore not building back muscles well. I will start some of these walk groundwork things, especially the hill work. But interested to know what you would suggest for a horse who tends to overbend and drop the contact but also not lift the back? At the moment I'm lunging in cavesson with no 'gadget', he's never had a gadget in fact. Also he kicks at asking for back lifts, but I'll try starting further towards the girth area.
Hi there, has he had a proper vet check over his spine? Maybe there is something going on there that causes pain when he lifts it?
Thank you for the video. I would like to ask how the suspensory apparatus distributes weight when the horse is in a resting position.
are you meaning the 'stay apparatus' that helps to keep the horse upright whilst resting, or just when they are resting a hind leg?
Can i ask where ypu got the civer inage from?
I love this video. I have a mature horse in his twenties. Any conditioning exercises are appreciated.
Thank you, I learned something new with your video. My 15.5yr old Shetland pony mare has been diagnosed with PPID and IR. Both. Right now she is on Prascend. Her feet are changing shape. It seems at the moment I am controlling the laminitis. She has had only one episode. At what point will her quality of life decline? What do I look for? Is this the results of our domestication of the horse? This isn’t prevalent in wild horses, is it?
apologies for the delay in responding. I think that predictions are quite tricky in this spot. If you are controlling it, then while she doesn't have an issue that is wonderful. Once tipped over though, they should be ALWAYS treated as laminitis or IR. I think the best and accurate source of information is: www.ecirhorse.org. I hope this helps
Excellent discussion, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow only 30 minutes of REM sleep a day?? They are amazing
Great video. I didn’t realize the horse benefits so much just at the walk without a rider!
Glad it was helpful!
This is so helpful for me!! Thank you. My ASH has been out of work for a while and needs a stronger back before riding
So glad it is helpful. I have an ASH too - love them. Good luck
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
So pleased it helped you and your horse 🥰
Thankyou so much! I was really able to grasp this insightful information because of your natural gift of communication! @@CazedarnesEquestrian
I have a 14 years oldmare . She is suffering by laminitis. She was overweight, low exercise with bad hoofs. I feed them(mare and 3 old mules) alfa alfa hay all of ther lifes. Recently i fed them wheat bran and the other day my mare couldnt walk and diagnosed with laminitis. Which was the main reason? And what can i do. I injected voltaren and vetaflumex.
Stall rest, feed her an anti inflammatory medicine. Do not feed her grains or high sugar or high starch foods. Feed her low quality hay, and no treats. And keep her off pasture for the rest of her life.
it is impossible to know the exact cause that put her over the edge, as many horses are different. This is the website (they also have a FB page), that I would recommend for accurate information.
I love the information, as I am using your videos to attempt to create a set of exercises for my dogs
fabulous :). I've been thinking of doing some dog exercises as well. Sadly I have no dog currently to be a model :(.
Very informative. Thank you.
thanks you!
cute
Thank you I'm interested in 3 yr old she is windsucker and although she has this issue she is good with her work and she has been in a stable environment for racing. So this video is so helpful I shall have her vet for ulcers teeth investigation and her new environment I shall be sure to add extra foliage slow feeder as my salt blocks and soft toys mirrors. Thanks heaps Il keep you updated with how we are both going Lisa Melbourne
thats great Lisa - had a bit of a sabbatical from videos - but will start again this year, and would love to hear how your mare is going. :)
I love these! I am not a rider but taking care of my daughters Hunter horse while she’s away in college. Our property is super flat and we don’t have hills. Is there a way I can get the same results on the flat, in hand?
You can do any of the exercises in hand for sure. You will certainly not be doing any harm!
First I have to say my TWH mare is 21 years old. I have had her since she was 3, I have kept really good care of her over the years. She is in good flesh and appears healthy although she isn’t as spunky as she once was. She fell and really injured a friend who was riding her. We are having a really hard time diagnosing her. My vet came out and did a lameness exam. Nothing was diagnosed, he suggested I take my mare to the state school vet hospital. They did testing, EPM and other tests were run. Nothing was shown wrong with her. I’ve been riding her but on a soft surface (for my safety and hopefully for her benefit)and at a gentle pace, for about 30 minutes a day, mostly just walking and she has been stumbling. I have been having body work done on her and I see no difference in her movements. I guess her riding days are over. 😞
very sad to hear :(. Does your horse have shoes on? I have found that sometimes they are better at this point without them. Shoes can inhibit blood flow down to the feet, so as she is getting older, perhaps her circulatory system is struggling a little? Just a thought, but good luck
I am an amateur rider and my horse often stumbles, but my coach and other expert riders say that I need to sit strong and keep the reins tight at all times.
Hi my fresian mare got stringhalt, called vet, to confirm removed from pasture. Treating with herbal medicine, good diet, plenty of hay. Its only been about 6 months. My horse canters pretty good, expecting especially up a hill. Ive seen slight improvement, hopfully when the weathers warmer, she will improve more, thanks for the video, Rhona ❤
That's sounding really positive, thanks for sharing your story :)
So for the older horses you get an elevated memory foam mattress 🤔
Thank you this was a great help and will be easy for me to do
Glad it helped :)
can we give water to horse after feeding oil?
Yes, no problem with that 👍
@@CazedarnesEquestrian thanks I am new owner of a horse and where I live there is no vet for horses . So I am always confused

I had a really tight bond with an Arabian. Worst part of my life when that ended. Horses are truly a gift from god.
one of mine that you see in my videos is an Arabian, so smart and versatile :)
By the way - this guy is super happy and healthy, just a well loved retired paddock ornament :)
I just found your channel. Thanks for your videos, they’re so informative.
Thank you! Please feel free to share around :). I need to start putting some more up!
But this isn't true. Plenty of fractures are surgically repaired.
Absolutely there are some that can be repaired - not all owners can carry the burden of cost for this, given the length and difficulty of recovery combined with the prognosis. The video doesn't say ALL horses are put down
@@CazedarnesEquestrian you know you can give them up to organizations that will pay for the horses injuries and you can readopt. Stop being selfish because you can't afford to help it.

If it is classic stringhult what is the best treatment ???
My videos give alot of information - but I steer away from giving any treatment or diagnostic advice as I am not a veterinarian, sorry.
Its simple really.......ban horse racing as it is cruel and barbaric.....End of broken leg problem for horse.
sadly there are many reasons a horse breaks its let, certainly not just racing. Pleasure horses break their legs in a paddock, it is sadly an evolutionary thing for them - they evolved with great speed and athleticism, with that are the inherent risks involved in their structure and function of their legs.
Some horses like racing like mine. Not all are abused and forced into it.
My horse started stumbling a lot. Feels like his left back leg slides out from under him, especially during half halts or change from canter to trot or walk. He is only showing signs of soreness on the left side of his back. I have been working him from the ground since it started and he is completely sound, but we'll see a horse chiro next week. I'm fairly certain it's something he's acquired while in the pasture, it started very suddenly and in the almost 3 years I've had him, he never had a problem like this. Any suggestions for what else I can do to help him out?
The reasons for this can be many and varied - ideally at this point I would do a full lameness work up with an appropriate vet.
@@CazedarnesEquestrian 4 days after I wrote this it turned out he'd been hiding a hoofabcess on his left front. His back got sore because he was working overtime to compensate. Abcess has been drained and treated for a week now, he is back to his happy self. No soreness anywhere, not even the abcessed hoof. I wish he could have told me exactly what was wrong. I'm so glad I worked him in hand instead of insisting on riding when I felt something was off. My poor boy.
So helpful, thank you!
thank you Janine
and when a 4yo in pasture suddenly has issues with his stifle catching.......................
Hi Deb, anything sudden like that is probably important to get a vet have a look first. Could have done some damage that is important to identify
Apart from weed intoxication it is caused by Iliopsoas muscle issue. Check Audrey Declue research she specialize on this diagnosis
