Typing test with a dual channel mic (rode wireless go 2)
I thought it would be a nice idea to do a typing test with a dual channel mic, one in each side of the keyboard. I find the results really interesting and I am definitely going to try more with these mics in the near future.
I definitely need to label the mics as left and right channel as I used the reversed :D

Is that an aluminum case? Also, what's the price difference between the Zen and the Corne? Does the Zen have rgb LED on each key?
@@LLF1234 yes the zen has an aluminium case. No backlight. And it was around $300. The difference is the spacing, one is Mx the other is Choc. Price difference is an odd question. I can build a corne from 50-150 it depends
Oh the first corne in the video is a custom build one ...so it's not like normal corne ...it's a modified PCB design to have Choc spacing

How and for what purpose are displays used with split keyboards?
@@UBO58 mostly for fun. Or as indicators which layer is on, if you like sticky layers
@@voidmachines Thanks a lot! 🙂
where can I find that mousepad?
that mousepad was part of a group by, so it won't be easy or simple to find it, but similar ones are occasionally available from prototypist.net
where is your tab key?
@@trench6118 it's that triangle. It's a dual function key tab on tap, layer 3 on hold
Only thing I miss with those keyboards is the number keys and I don't really want to use a FN key to activate them
do check out the lily58, then.
Momoka frogs. Definitely my favourites but they not so reliable, they start to chater after a year of usage
Sorry for beeing late but thanks a lot!
what switches are those?
Impressive.. very nice... Let's See Paul Allen's Corne
why tho u literally wasted money
This is a hobby I got 11 corne variants. I just love this keyboard and when I got the zen I didn't have a Bluetooth variant
@@voidmachines i c my bad
My name is corne😮
caps?
Mbk legends
You should separate and rotate inward the two boards. You have a split ortho keyboard and are still twisting your wrists like a regular keyboard. That's causing your fingers to splay instead of falling naturally together. Put away the keyboard, put your hands on the table lined up with your shoulders and look at where your hands naturally fall. Put the keyboard halves there.
I might love split keyboards and have a big collection of them, but the keyboard I always go back to and have been typing 80% of my time the past 2 years is the Unibody version of the Corne, Cornelius. So yeah I am quite used to having them close together. I know it's not the most ergonomic way, but it's hard to shake of muscle memory and habits
I'm confused. Title says silent. Other comments say silent. But those are loud compared to my silent mxs
Those were the most silent chock switches until at least yesterday. Kailh just released an actual silent switch called ambient nocturnal. They are a bit expensive but I might get a pack
@@voidmachines Thanks for pointing this out. Just ordered these. 20 euro from Netherlands to Denmark for 10 :)
that keyboard looks pretty, which is it?
It called cisne its from a small group buy
how do the sunsets feel to you? I saw somebody on reddit describe them as "crunchy" lol
I like them. I don't use them often enough as I don't participate like Bluetooth keyboards but they certainly feel better than every other choc switch I tried so far ..and I tried quite a few of them
Dude those are CLICKYYYYYYY!
Hi what keyboard is this?
It's the Cornish Zen. A choc spaced variant of the Corne keyboard
Hi there, Where is the Deskmat from? Best
All the deskmats are from prototypist, but this one is a really old one.
Thanks for the quick response!
I know. Since I got this... I cannot tolerate another keyboard 😂
Sounds so goooooood
Love the setup! Ploopy is my dream mouse, but I've got a Logitech Marble mouse that I'm not giving up on yet
Now I switched to an elecom deft Pro. After 2 years one of the ploopy switches, doesn't always register. I need to find some time to repair it.
nice colors i like the combination of grey and blue. if its not a problem i will use your video in a page that i am making just to learn web tech. If it is not ok let me know.
Yeah no problem. This is just a hobby channel. I don't take it that much seriously 😁
Can you recommend an MX style keycap set? I'm thinking about getting the bluetooth microcontrollers, a screen, and 3d printing the case. I am also looking at getting Boba U4T switches for my first build.
Keycaps are personal preference. For all tastes and prices. Generally most sets have enough keys for the corne. But if you are looking to have the correct legends you probably need a 40% set. zmk now is mature enough so doing a Bluetooth build is not such a bad idea. I don't like having to charge the 2 halves. I think screens consume too much battery. That's why the zen has e-ink screens
What microcontrollers does the “zen” use and what categorizes it as a zen?
@@rx2gamingofficial the zen is a preassembled variation of the corne with choc spacing. Designed and sold by lowprokb. It's not a kit. They used to do runs every year but I think this year they want to try something different. lowprokb.ca/products/corne-ish-zen
I don't think you are typing correctly on this keyboard: one of the benefits of using these small factor keyboards is that you don't need to move your hand at all. The index fingers should only press the internal two columns, then one column for the middle finger, one for the ring finger and finally the last two columns are for the little finger. You are not using your little fingers at all. You use 3 columns with the index finger and for the external columns you use your ring finger: for this reason you are forced to move your hands left and right quite a lot.
I have mentioned it quite a few times, It's not easy for me to type in general, due to my arthritis, if you watch my videos, you will notice that I type quite differently from times to times.
@@voidmachines sorry, I didn't know about that, I'm sorry, it's the first video of your channel that I watch
@@krige don't worry it is a comment I get pretty often 😂 I don't mind i that much. But to be honest before I got into mechanical keyboards I was typing probably with 2 fingers on each hand so I do have some bad muscle memory from over all these years.
why are your fingers so weird placed over the board ?? cant you type normally like a human being.
I've mentioned it before in a different video. But no I can't ..the reason I got into ergonomic keyboards is mainly because I got arthritis
The size looks pretty good. Trying to imagine what the Ploopy mini would be like compared to my Elecom HUGE. Don't need a trackball as big as the HUGE anyway...how do you like it 1 year later?
I love it. I am actually thinking of getting a second one as a backup. Although two weeks ago I switched into an elecom deft Pro. Because I had a weird issue that one of the switches doesn't work intermittently when plugged to a KVM. For work reasons I need to be using 2 computers for a couple of months. So I had to set it aside
@@voidmachines ahh I was just reading about that issue today. Something about KVM switches interpreting the ploopy as a keyboard. I don’t need one so I’ll take that as a solid endorsement. I also noticed the new Ploopy Adept so I’m debating between the 2
Man not having the Esc key there is nuts... why would you do that?
In reality it is there. You can still click the rotary encoder and get escape ...I thought it would be usable but the force of constantly clicking that is insane.
I have my Esc key behind a layer, it is Thumb + Regular Esc position. but not having it there... damn man.@@voidmachines
@@mvargasmoran I have now removed the encoder completely and added a button there. What was I thinking. ❤️
Damn, this case is dope.
bruddah you still don't touch type?
I don't use the pinky on my right hand often but apart from that I am using everything other finger.
@@voidmachinesTouch typing is much more than just using every finger. I highly recommend you learn using it, especially with a split ergo keyboard. It’s faster and less fatiguing.
Looks amazing! Where can I buy something like this without keycaps or switches? I just feel I am not confident enough building all from scratch.. :X
I buy most of my things from mechboards.co.uk/ but there are quite a few other places selling corne PCBs though
What keyboard is this?
It's called the Cornelius and it's a unibody variation of the corne
For anyone like me wondering what is "sort", "shots". He probably means the short - as in the module is shorting against the case.
Yes that's what I mean. Sorry I know my accent is not perfect 😁 I am doing the best. Indeed this version had a small chance of the Bluetooth module shorting against the case....which could be easily fixed just by adding kapton tape between the Bluetooth and the case. Easy fix....just need to be a little bit careful with the screws
I also noticed it was wrong in the description, so I fixed that as well. Thanks 😊
No worries, just mentioning it as I stumbled on this. Thanks!@@voidmachines
Really like your key caps. Do you have a link for where your ordered them from?
They are the standard mbk keycaps...those were probably ordered from splitkb.com
Informative video! I was also wondering where you got that desk mat from, it looks really nice!
I get all my deskmats from protoypist. This one is from gmk Polybius
@@voidmachines Thanks so much!
Did you look into miryoku layout? Any thoughts?
Yes, I am aware of the layout but no matter how much I tried mod tap doesn't cut it for me. I make too many accidental mistakes. Also I tend to use a lot of prefix commands in neovim (similar to default tmux) and it feels more like trying to play the piano than actually typing. Having said that I do use 2 mod tap commands but neither are part of the alphabet characters. I might make a video about my layout at some point 🙂
@@voidmachines please do!
which one is the most comfortable for you between kyria, waterfowl, and corne? and as a software engineer is it enough to use 42 keys or less? I'm a software engineer too, I want to try 42 keys or less, but I'm afraid that it won't be enough to meet my needs and might hinder my work.....
I know a lot of people that go lower than 42 keys without any issues. Personally I have tried many times but can't. 42 is my absolute minimum. The kyria and corne are equally comfortable. I love waterfowl but I struggle with it.
@@voidmachinessweet, thank you so much!
Is it true that Sunset switches are a lot quieter than other Chocs ?
They are quieter than the clicky but on par with the linear...
@@voidmachines Ouchhh, just ordered 50 sunset switches, could have ordered linear switches than. Anyway, thanks for the info !
@@JohnIdlewood sunsets feel way nicer though 🙂 they are as tactile a tactile switch needs to be (for my tastes)
For stats 🙂
What’s the bag where you have it? It looks perfect for it
It came with the keyboard. I didn't get it separately. 🙂
Can you make a video about split keyboard and Neovim? About non querty layout and Neovim if you use that? And about that ploopy trackball?
I am using qwerty so I don't have a strong opinion on non qwerty layouts. Also what makes a split keyboard special with Neovim? I can share my Neovim config if you are interested. But I don't think it's so interesting anyway 😁. I recently started a more tech oriented channel tbh. But unfortunately lately I have been unable to finish new videos because of some overtime and deadlines we got at work
@@voidmachines I use Lunarvim config. I was curious about alternative layouts and my wife is looking for a better trackball.
@@hcjkruse the ploopy trackballs are amazing I got 2 of them. But out of the box they are really really noisy. The steel bearings with the pool ball are not the best combination. If you have a 3d printer and time, there are several mods you can try.
Nice video, thanks for sharing, well done :)
What mouse are you using?
It's called ploopy mini
@@voidmachines Thanks for the reply. I am considering getting one do you have any advice on it?
@@RobertHall-x3v not really. It's a great trackball mouse. Since I got it I have never used another one. The only downside is that it's noisy by default and you might need to mod it. i.e. change the steel bearings to BTUs. But that requires a 3d printer.
did you use QMK to build the firmware? I have one of this, and i want to change the default behavior of the encoders, but i'm quite noob and not sure how to do it
It definitely supports via or vial ...I am not sure which of the two. Nowadays they have a web driver. So if you visit vial keyboard site you can connect the keyboard and configure it.
I meant the default firmware provided supports vial. I rarely compile things in qmk anymore most people provide compiled firmwares and I flash them with the qmk ui tool
Really love this build. By any chance is your PCB MX spacing or choc spacing. I really want to get this keycap set but my Corne is choc spacing with choc switches and the description for this set says MX spacing. very new to this realm of custom keyboards so I'm still learning lol.
Kyrias are MX spacing. And indeed those keycaps are not compatible with Choc spaced keyboards. I am surprised though bey only a few corne are Choc spaced like the zen and most are MX spaced
@@voidmachines I made a mistake, you’re correct my Corne is MX Spacing. Just double checked with the PCB seller. Super stoked that I can get this cap set. Thanks for the help!
nice stream
Hey there, where is the case from? Do you know if there's a similar case for a corne 5-column?
The Cornish zen was produced by Lowprokb and was indeed also available in 5 columns. But they won't be making it again, as far as I am aware, at least exactly in this form.
what about numerical keys are the not necessary?
Both numbers and symbols are on the top row accessed by modifiers called layer keys. And they do act like layers while. It's similar to a shift button
@@voidmachines so does it change back when u release the "layer" key or do you have to switch back manually with another key to base layer?
@@harmonyinchaos6381 you can do both, most people prefer the momentarily layer which reverts back as soon as you stop holding it down
