Placeholder Assets - Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly
While developing Enter the Dragonfly, Check Six used various placeholder assets. Thanks to leftover unused data within a handful of scripts, we can tell what these placeholders were. All assets seen here are used in other forms in the final game but once were used temporarily for these functions.

This is by far the most significant video featured on this Demo CD. This appears to be a level mockup for Jester's Quest made in-house by Check Six's own artists (which is interesting as later almost all art would be created by Equinoxe). Running off of what's likely a camera spline, this seems to be the actual project file running as an animation in Maya itself and not the Jester's Quest game ...

      @@Mike14264 Yeah, hundreds of bugs big and small have been addressed and fixed in this mod. There’s many small oversights or inconsistencies that were left in. This mod goes further than just fixing bugs and adding unused content as it also polishes anything asset where possible and adds features and behavior to characters where they didn’t exist before. It’s still not perfect and the game will need to be fully decompiled to fix source code related bugs (which there are a plethora of), but all the improvements make this the definitive way to play the game. It’ll release next month :)

      ​@@MrFO1 also, funny thing I noticed... That last bit about the text not matching Spyro's line? I think it was a flub on the VA's part 😅 Tetsu is a real japanese name, so I think he just mispronounced it as Testu 🤣

      @@Mike14264 You’re right, it is a misread on the actor’s part lol. Though I wouldn’t blame the voice actors as the voice over recording was all over the place as multiple actors recorded lines meant for other actors, and the script they read is not the one used in the game. The whole thing was mismanaged. Plus, the name Tetsu is one of the developers of the game. I first tried to edit the dialogue to make it sound like “Tetsu” but couldn’t get it natural enough so I opted to just adjust the text.

    Honestly, this is incredibly nice! I have no history with this game whatsoever, but I always enjoy seeing people restore games with lost potential, especially after hearing about all the ideas turned down and cut by Universal! The modders are doing a splendid job!

    2:45 this line was actually in Spyro Season of Flame, which has fireflies as collectibles and uses the Spyro 3 challenge portals as opposed to ETD's minigame portals (and the game calling the time trial gates "challenge portals"). Seems it somehow slipped into the Spyro 4 script, heh.

    Mr. F01 i think i found a new odditie, the baskets on thieves den maybe was an beta texture of the baskets, this will explain the differences, but a little different, and spyro had three textures (at least in gamecube version) and they are in different formats, 64x64, 128x128 and 256x256, you can put on your mod the textures with bigger quality (and put the honeycombs more satured in honeymarsh)? I'm really excited about this mod and thank you so much for what you're doing for the spyro fandom.

      @@FreezyTD The Thieves Den Possessed Baskets are actually using the prototype era basket texture, you are correct! I believe I showed this off in a video years ago, it’s not 100% confirmed as a prototype early enough with the texture has it but footage from that era looks awfully like those early textures.

    Bianca and Zoe are pitched/toned DOWN, not up... Some of these are a tad weird, but most make sense.

      @@Diablo_Himself Bianca/Zoe’s lines have been pitched up after recording the actors, to restore their original pitches they must be pitched down, Bianca’s is more significant than Zoe’s. When it says ‘PITCHED:’ I’m referring to pitching them down as those are my edited versions.

      @@thebubsy3dgamer Correct, Moneybags’ model in Dragonfly Dojo is the Kimono Moneybags variant. I’ve also thought he would’ve had a different appearance in each level they intended him to appear in which is pretty much confirmed as his save game icon is him in a completely different more standard-like outfit. At the very least they had one other model variant for him.

    If they had the Cloud 9 theme finished and used it in Dragon Realms, then why did they use Cutthroat Cove for it? Same for Jurassic Jungle using Enchanted Forest's music! To have a unique track play in each level I suppose?

      @@thebubsy3dgamer It’s simply due to them not getting around to updating the tracks at that point as various placeholder music tracks were used, first being Spyro 3 music and then with the first batch of EtD songs. Same thing happened to SFX being inconsistent throughout the levels, and not being updated till very close to the final build.

      @@thebubsy3dgamer Yeah, it’s all due to bad asset management and not keeping every level up to date with changes at the same time. All of those issues have been fixed in my mod.

      @@thebubsy3dgamer Correct, it was just a placeholder track considering it was one of the first couple composed for the game. I once thought it was meant for Monkey Monastery but have since learned much more about the soundtrack now that we have the Master Disc which lists the tracks in order of completion.

    I have played both versions on ps2 and GameCube. The Game cube port seems to have a slightly better frame rate when played on a CRT TV.

    Greatest Hits PS2 NA version: If you have more than 800 gems from a 900 gem level like Luau Island, and you haven't broken them up between the other portals in one of those 900 gem levels like Luau Island, before exiting the level, and you exit the level with all those gems at once, so the "exiting level" screen shows you collected more than 800 gems, the game will freeze at the exiting level screen, with some of the gems still floating in mid-air just as the gem count reaches 0. I could never beat the game with my original copy because of this glitch :( I had to buy the gamecube version as I couldn't figure out why it kept freezing

      Neat, I've never heard of that before! That bug does sound very strange. I just tried to replicate it in Luau Island by collecting 900 gems and then exited the level via the portal, the bug did not occur - can you provide more information?

    Blindly guessing here, but I'm guessing Sparx's last bit of dialogue could very well be "That I'm pretty sure they could have stolen."

      @@MiscDan64 That’s a very fitting guess! From the sounds of it I can hear 6-8 words but it’s incredibly hard to decipher what the actor is actually saying. In other cases I’ve been able to pick up on what’s actually being said even if the text doesn’t match, but not this line.

    weird that this is "pre-copeland". Copeland makes this country sounding stuff in a lot of his movie soundtracks. Maybe he actually found a love of it from this soundtrack?

      @@coreylapinas1000 All of Enter the Dragonfly’s music started with 4 additional composers creating a base mix using Copeland’s instruction about the theme of the level. The project files were then handed over to Stewart to be finished off, in some cases he only added basic percussion and in others he added entirely new segments, I have dozens of the Pre-Copeland mixes on my channel acquired from the original composers.

    I'm always so happy to see you post these! btw that blank string at the end of those strips, I'm willing to bet they're stoppers. during development lazy developers will build spaghetti/prototype code. sometimes we want it to break out on its own. if you put a blank string at the very end it might indicate that THAT is the last line in said script and the scripting event is then over so it doesn't repeat endlessly.

      @@cwiggs1483 Sadly not. But if you kill fodder, then move a small distance away till they respawn you can keep killing them. This way you’ll easily farm extra lives - this can be best done in the starting Dragon Realms area.

      @@lxmusic2256 I wanted it to but it freezes on real hardware likely due to memory limitations. It can be played on an emulator such as PCSX2 which is free to download.

    You forgot about they kinda patched the ladder glitch in Jurassic Jungle on GameCube version. I'm not sure if people actually know about this glitch .🤔 😅

      @@dustinbriggs1991 I don’t think they did fix any ladder bugs.There’s several issues with the physics and mechanics of it, if it is fixed it was probably because they had to change something for it to even work on the GameCube console

      @@MrFO1 I use to do out of bounds in Jurassic Jungle a lot years ago when I was a teen. Around 2004, I think. Found the glitch by accident for completing the game.
