Honda Trail 125 YSS Fork Kit - Install Tips and Review

I put about 2500 miles on the YSS Fork Kit, was never very happy with it. It doesn't seem to perform much better than the stock fork in my opinion. Lots of variables to suspension, this is just one fool's initial experience with the kit and things I have learned trying to figure out why it doesn't seem to work too well. I gathered some additional info from these channels, good info on both: ruc...

Went chasing the rain I saw on the horizon; it never comes but it was a beautiful afternoon on the bike. Caught some good examples of how poor the tires are off road. They need replace if doing serious off-road riding, all in all still a great bike.

To switch the sub transmission (L/H) the rear wheel needs to rotate slightly, while moving the lever, to allow the gear teeth to mesh. If like my Trail 90, there is a label on the chain guard with instructions for switching the sub transmission…
Thank you for this. I know it's a 3yo video, but I'm trying to decide between the Cub or Trail and was hoping a gearing change would get me a little more mph 'cause I really like the looks of the Trail and its taller seat. Bummer.
@@pedlpower glad it helped, the Cub is definitely a better bike if mph is a concern.
Hello ...did you just use the adjusters ....ive seen a few videos not that owners are not totally happy with the yss kit..mim in the process of returning the items to Yss thailand...thank you
@@brestman1 hi, yes eventually I was just using the adjusters and PD valves, though I don't think the PD valves make any difference with the stock piston. I tried the whole kit at first, but it still bottomed out pretty bad no matter how much I tightened the adjusters. So I went back to the stock springs with a 15wt oil and that was about as good as I ever got it. Nothing I tried ever got rid of the clunking noise however.
Oh gosh..sad yss didn't do a good job on RND on this kit...clunking sounds esp on a bike is irritating indeed..I guess il be returning this kit to yss thailand....
I've bottomed out and dented the front fender with stock initially...took it to my mechanic and just tipped up the fork oil from oem 50ml to 100ml..now the front is firm and nice..also I don't think a softer setting on a ct125 will be comfortable with a very short suspension travel
Thank you so much for your reply and reviews...I'm convinced now to wrap this back for shipping to thailand
@@brestman1 you're welcome, good luck getting it sorted out. It's ironic that just more oil has a greater affect than all those expensive parts.
I'm surprised it's carbureted. It's 2024 and carb is so outdated anymore.
@@BritonAD yeah me too. Outdated but simple and easily fixed. One of the reasons it costs what it does. Build quality the other
Keep your head still while filming please or attach the camera to your torso. The riding shots were great but the static stuff made me feel dizzy. Thanks for the great hill climbing footage.

i went back to my stock 14/39 and just went my top speed over 62 mph for 17 miles.i made a trip to the beach and the wind was so bad 40 mph is the fastest it would hit. we have one very tall bridge just before we get to the beach and i toped it at 18 mph. got to the beach it was a joke that day so i headed home. and 62 mph was easy to hit and maintain. i topped that bridge at 48 mph. and going down it i just pulled up my shifter and it hit 67 going down it. that dont count i know but i did find out i dont think i want to run that fast on that bike again. but when i got to the bottom and slowed down to about 60 i let it go back into gear and it picked up to 62 and stayed there until i had to turn off 17 miles down the road then it was back to my normal 45 to 50 mph. but it was fun while it lasted.
Did you forget to mention the comparison to the Honda CT Trail 125 Dude?
This YSS kit worked much better than the stock forks on my first generation ct125. Especially matched with the basic YSS preload adjustable rear shocks. Stock was too soft/squishy, underdamped/overly bouncy, and uneven compression/rebound front to rear on my bike. YSS seems to have better damping/less bouncing, I could firm it up to my liking, and could better match up the front and rear for a more composed and controlled ride.
Thanks for the magnet tip. I also used a thin clear tube to suck/pipette the oil out. Not having to remove the forks or handlebar made it an easy install. It doesn't remove all the oil though so I pre-measured the stock air gap above the oil. With the springs still in, forks compressed, and spacer removed it was 50mm on my bike. With YSS kit I'm currently running a 35mm air gap to firm it up. Playing with the air gap makes a big difference to feel of the forks.
The YSS CT125 kit does not include or use a "PD Valve Spacer" so the "Note" should be ignored. Just follow the diagram.
Just installed the 15 tooth and for what I do it’s perfect. I can cruise at 40 with very little buzz vs the oem 14 tooth that got very buzzy at 40.
Hi all. So I just installed this kit in April 2024. I weigh 220 pounds. Everything worked perfectly! Perhaps they have tweaked the kit over the years. Definitely recommend removing the fork legs for cleaning and emptying the old oil (loosen top caps before you drop legs). No bottoming…less dive…way better damping. I’m at about 1/2 way on the preload adjuster. Used 125cc oil each leg …highly recommend! Rear shocks come next week.
Glad to hear it worked out for you. Maybe they did tweak it. The best I ever got mine was using the original springs, with the PD valve and adjusters from the kit and 15w oil. Still clunked on occasion
I appreciate your process. I sincerely hope the product has improved in the last 2 years. You still have to pump the forks to completely drain the oil right? When you pump the individual fork legs does fluid drain easily from the bottom drain nut?
I pumped them to get all the oil out yep, but they seemed to drain pretty much all the way on their own
My yss fork kit just arrived..now im a little worried bout installing them...I'm a 73 75kg rider ...do I really need this kit???my stock fork rides fine after changing oil to 15w n topping it up to 100ml
Something to let your brother ride if he would ever come to visit.
Yeah what the hell is up with that? 😂
Sweet! I miss my old CT110. 😢 The video looks and sounds great! --QM
Thanks, definitely a fun bike. This one only took me 3 different tries to overcome the obligatory GoPro glitches 😡
Awesome video, I wish the original 110 was a lot more available here!
Thanks, it's definitely a cool little bike
So happy to see the next chapter! Can't wait for number 8!
What is your height and weight?
I'm 5' 11", about 175lbs
Not good on hills 40 max
Always enjoy watching your rides. I have a CT125 and a Himalayan - now you're making me want a Navi lol. The struggle is real.
Thanks for the kind words. I haven't posted much for awhile, appreciate you watching. I always love riding the Navi, short trips to the store always turn into multi hour long rides
I have stock front forks on my CT125 and have the clunking noise too. The addition of a small quantity of fluid is an interesting idea. There is quite a discussion on Honda Trail 125 Forum about front suspension mods and also the clunking noise some of us have. An idea put forth by some members is that the steering stem headrace nut (my understanding is it preloads the ball bearings in the steering stem) may be inadequately torqued, allowing excessive vertical play and the resultant clunking noise. Maybe I'll try a fluid level check / addition as that may be an easy & cheap first shot at solving this issue. If that doesn't work, then I think I'll try the headrace nut torque for a little more work and $50 to buy the special socket. Then my bike will be perfect!👌
Pretty cool that you're just taking it easy and living within your bike's limitations.
I have a 2023 and I bought the Chimera preload cap and changed out to 15w oil. I did measure the amount of factory fork oil that I drained and it was 120ml in each fork. You could add a little more as needed because the service manual states you can have +/- 2.5 cm3 which equates to 2.5 ml. I weigh 195lbs and it has made a big difference in the stance and performance of the front end.
As a side note, make sure you have the fork cap fully seated in place when you remove and replace the drain plug on the bottom of the fork. Remove the drain plug first then remove the fork cap. Pump the front end up and down several times to make sure you get all of the oil out. When drained, put the fork cap back in, then put the drain plug back in and torque to 20Nm, then remove the fork cap and add your oil.
@@yodasands thanks for the info, I ended up selling mine as I just wasn't riding it. Hopefully others will see your comments. I never did figure out the clunk.
I wish they'd have put the high/low gear box into this model.
Have you changed the gearing on your bike?
I experimented with a 15t sprocket, ended up going back to the stock 14t. It did smooth out the buzz a bit, but it doesn't have enough power to pull the higher gearing, not at my altitude anyway
@@zamdrang thanks for the info!

I can understand why manual bikes are dead for cities like NYC, but on an open road like this, I can understand why manual transmissions are still alive.

What fairing is used on the 300L?
That's the Zeta Adventure windscreen. Doesn't do a whole lot, sort of helps with chest pressure, creates a lot of noise.
Nice scenery with plenty of time to enjoy it on the Navi.
That screen & frame your running on the front of the 300L ? Any chance we can get a link or website as to where you go them please. . Many thanks . .
Hi, that's the Zeta Adventure windscreen. I don't recall who I bought it from but a google search should find it. I might have got it from crfsonly.com. Heads up the amount of down adjustment is hampered by the brake line. It will just barely slide past but puts a lot of tension on it. I'm 5'11 and find it creates a lot of noisy buffeting right at my head when slid down to where it's hitting thr brake line. It's not subtle, very loud. I slid it past the brake line for one ride just to test it ans it helped a bit and moved the buffeting point to my neck area. So I will be chopping mine or removing it altogether. Overall imo after 5k miles it's just very loud. If you stand up or move your head to the side everything is much calmer and quieter. Not sure how much it actually helps if I'm honest. Your opinion may differ. Best of luck and thanks for watching :)
Many thanks for your very generous reply . . Much appreciated . . Im also 5,11 so I will concider this when I begin my build. Awesome countryside your riding in there. . Im from the Tropics in Far Nth Australia. . bit different. . Keep enjoying life and keep safe. . Many thanks Ash . . 🏆
