Old Penny Arcade Puppet Show Vintage Slot Machine Circus Themed 'Clown Around' Renovation
It’s been a few months since we collected a dusty old slot machine puppet show from an auction house, and even though we only paid £130 for it, it was in pretty bad shape and we wondered if we’d made a huge mistake buying it! 😱
Thankfully Chris is a dab hand at thinking outside the box (feel there should be a pun there, but couldn’t think of one!) 🤣 and over a period of 5 months, he carefully renovated it into a fully working circus themed puppet show, we’ve christened ‘Clown Around’.
Sadly, we were unable to identify the original maker of the machine, but newspapers inserted inside suggested it originated from the Oldham area in the 1970’s. Of course, if having watched this video and reali...

I know these have quite the following (mainly from the VW fraternity) so thought I’d show you around! Normal service on fairground/pennyarcades/themeparks will resume soon! 😬🤣 ENJOY!

Ruffler & Walker Try Your Grip Tester Vintage Arcade Slot Machine
I am working on exactly the same machine as this. I think the V Payne is almost certainly a credit to the guy who restored the artwork for the new backflash. Lovely machine
Ahh thanks for the heads up on V Payne, I was only saying today I may restore it back to original but we decided not too and it’s such an eye catcher. Hope yours is coming along nicely.
Tell chris to go out the door backwards.
It’s the only way! 🤣
Hello is it for sale?
Sorry it's not for sale, we use it in our old Penny arcade!
I love steam trains 🚂
I'm with you on this!!
How much did that cost
It was around £200 if my memory serves me right. That was about 4years ago now, if that helps!
Fantastic job looks great. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching! You’re our first, we loaded it up yesterday morning and it’s taken until today to show up! 😄
@@amusementsrevisited Wow! Fantastic restoration I have to say it looks so much better than it did before. Before it looked all sad and almost abandoned it's such a shame these days there's not so many of these in arcades although now you sometimes see them in old penny arcade machines. The hand and feet buttons remind of an old puppet machine called Peppy The Clown where you control the clown's arms and legs whilst he sings I think there's plenty of videos of that machine on RUclips I think it's made by Williams.
@@HarryYT22 Thank you for your kind words! Yes, I agree, it's sad not seeing these old puppet shows around seaside resorts anymore...they need to come back into fashion. It's funny you say that, my thought was Williams, because the stencil on the side was very reminiscent of pinball designs and similar colours too. Also Zelda had mentioned Williams did the Peppy the Clown and those buttons are definitely the same. I'd love to think it was a Williams machine, that lost it's way somewhere.
@@amusementsrevisited I'd say the rarest machine I have seen in an arcade up in Chapel St Leonard's once was a laughing sailor. He didn't have an original laugh but everything else looked original including the figure inside.
I’ve seen a couple of reproductions but would love to see an original in the flesh!
just come across your viio i have the exact set in my workshop waiting for paint im half way through painting them good vido
Fantastic! It's a great little set of boats; have fun with the painting!
I like these kind of machines but they do creep me out a bit 😆
Same here, the Mrs begged me to make her one, so couldnt refuse her. haha
You're so welcome, love the content 👍
Really appreciate that, hopefully lots more content to watch this year.
I remember these on a side stall at my local summer fairground a big row of them heads turning 😅
We sold ours on, as we found kids were scared of them, but I do miss them. I bet your side stall looked fabulous! I'd sad ours have gone now!
This video appeared in my recommended list and wow what a treat, long story short i worked on the travelling fairs in the 90's and my boss had to go to the Showmans yard Edwards' of Swindon we were collecting some fairly modern fruit machines for the travelling arcade and at the same time in the shed was some older games collecting dust i think destined for the skip 😮 I asked if i could possibly have one of these games and i took with us See Saw as in your video here. Not seen one since mine, regrettably i sold a small collection of arcade machines that i built up as a teenager later on including See Saw. Thanks for the memories and what a grand looking arcade you have 😀 Subscribed too 👍
Thank you for your wonderful comments, we're so lucky Chris is a fairground artist by trade, so all our attractions look beautiful. I don't know how he puts up with me, telling him what to build! 😂 Chris said he think a lot of Edwards' machines went to Dingles. You have exactly Chris' taste in machine, he wanted the See Saw, I love the old Allwins (ironically I'm 9 years younger than Chris..but an old soul!) *lol*. I can well see why you miss your machines and they're ridiculously hard to get back now too. *sob*. Thanks so much for subscribing; very much appreciated!
@@amusementsrevisited Thanks for your reply very interesting to learn alot of Edward's old games machines ended up at Dingles that makes sense with the fairground rides there. I miss my machines so much especially seeing similar versions on RUclips. I had a Sega Space Trek cocktail space invaders, see saw, a bally 2p Cascade Star bandit and several old 80s Jpm Bell Fruit machines and Jamma video cabinets in the bedroom and in the garage when at home with my parents. It's when I went travelling with fair at 16yo I sold all the machines as my parents were moving downsizing property. To see the value of these machines is astonishing but it's not the money just wish had them all back now. Again lovely to see your arcade and the traditional fairground artwork is a real talent 👍
Great video thanks for posting.
Thank You!
I remember as a kid the amusement Park in redcar had a coin operated puppet show with these puppets.
It's seeing puppet show slot machines like you remember in Redcar, which sparked my love of them!
Well done! i was most reluctant to operate one at Old Penny Memories Bridlington but it was very popular and i still own it 😀
Same for us; thought it would be a good filler, but actually love it! Is OPM still there? We love coming along and spending some pennies at arcades!
Not operating but still got the collection plus more! Are you Yorkshire based?@@amusementsrevisited
Love the videos, keep em coming.
Thanks, will do! Glad they're going down so well!
She's absolutely stunning! I love the fact that she doesn't speak as well like most old fortune teller machines way before the modern Zoltar machines we see today in arcades that actually talk and move. Looking forward to the puppet show video you don't see much of those these days same with the laughing sailor.
It's funny you say that as we did discuss putting a voice box in, but liked the sound of the creaking arms and drop of the coin more, which we felt more atmospheric. I am SO EXCITED about the puppet show (not sure if Chris feels the same *lol*). I'm keeping everything crossed we find a makers mark somewhere on it. Thanks for watching!
Ok thank you 😢
No problem 😊
Would it be possible to have the lengths and sizes of wood metal poles etc to make a set myself please
Sadly, we've sold this set on, so can't help I'm afraid.
🎉
Thank you!
Top spin ride
Gotta love a Top Spin Ride!
What an absolutely gorgeous little machine. I love it!
Thank you so much; it was a delight to renovate!
Hi my guy was wondering how much would it cost to build one for him as he thinks you have a lovely one there please and delivery
Thanks so much for such kind comments. Unfortunately, my days building Swingboats are long gone, so thank you for the offer, which I'll politely decline. You could check out vintage sets, eBay have them come up regularly. Look for paperwork with them if wanting to use commercially. Lots of luck!
Just bought a 6 bay 14ft high Adult set that comes with 6 kids boats as well
That must be some set! I'm getting too old for an adult set; lovely to hear yours comes with 6 kids boats too!
My wife and I bought a 430 from 1998 which is in brilliant condition some weeks ago and had a lot of good times since then…we love the cute little caravan!❤
It's a fabulous van, especially for a couple, so much space! Have some great travels this year.
We’ve got a 430…..i could do without the gas rings….instead a microwave would be nice…are you listening Eriba..
I'm not disagreeing with that ask! :)
Hi, I want to build a set, I am a Joiner by Trade so not a problem to me, just wondering what timber yours are made of and are the Boats made of Marine Ply, the only thing I can see might take a bit of thinking about is the profile of e Boats, getting it wrong would be expensive, making a pattern is the obvious solution, but getting the scale right, mmm! any tips from yourselves, it would be great to get hold of a pattern from someone, hiny, hint thanks in advance
Sorry for delay replying, you could well have sorted it by now. Yes, I used Marine Ply and the legs are Douglas Fir (I think) and the top beam Oak (quite the Heinz 57!) Regarding patterns, Doug Roseman Engineering does scaled patterns for Swingboats, maybe worth a shot. Thanks for watching; much appreciated.
You know you are getting old when you spend your friday night watching this whole series... I enjoyed your videos, nice tips and tricks! Maybe I will be building one in the future. Don't really need one for anything but seemed like fun build.
haha! I'm with you there regarding spamming series! Good luck if you go for a build!
Love the vintage rides!
Same here; delighted to see them at the Festival!
Hi Chris and Zelda, By the wonders of the Internet I found your business page!. I love your set up, and as I have a background in building trailers and garden rooms as well as signwrighting I would love to start a similar business in Northumberland. I wonder if you would mind if I contacted you for a few ideas. Kind regards Will
Hi Will, thanks for your lovely message, we're delighted you found something enjoyable in the videos. We essentially placed up these video's for folks who wanted the odd attraction to help them along, not a whole business to replicate our own, particularly as we cover the UK, but thanks for thinking of us!
@@amusementsrevisited Thanks for your reply, sorry I didn't realise you were nationwide!, completely appreciate that would not be something you can help with 😁. Looking forward to more of the videos, currently I work for a business selling Sheds Summerhouses and Garden rooms up here in Northumberland and as you can probably imagine customers can be cfar and few at this time of the year 😁, so your content would be well received. Thanks again Will
Loved the series!
Thank you! Are you gonna have a go at your own striker now then? 👍🏻
Fantastic little ride.
Thank you! Delighted you like it!
In the freezer compartment ive filled it with 4 freezer blocks ,to pop in our bags to keep the picnics cool…or fetching milk from one of the big 4..
Love that idea! Happy camping!
Enjoyed this visit to the fairground models. Great video. You might like one of mine (ruclips.net/video/iyvyDHdIwKQ/видео.html) which is from the Links Market Model Show (very similar to yours) and I have a few heritage railway videos as well you might enjoy.
Hi , Loved the videos, so glad you're passing the knowledge on. A quick question, if you used the same build for the box and mechanism, how tallcould the backboard be made. Would you need to change all of the dimensions. Thanks for the videos again.
Great you love the videos! Thank you! Tbh I think to change the size of the backboard you’d need to scale the box and mech up, as the arm would need a bigger swing to lift the mouse higher. Hope that helps!
@amusementsrevisited Thanks for your message, l will build a striker so thank you for your video and channel, if I can upscale I will message you with some pictures. Thanks Will
@@williamroberts9852 looking forward to seeing it completed! 👍🏻
Hello can I ask how did you do the side panels. How did you adapt them to the main upright with those big hinges please thanks
The side bits that say test your strength and the mighty striker bits
Hi there! Sorry for the delay. To add side panels, you’d need to get hold of 4 pieces of flat bar 30cm length 25mm x 6mm. Bolt half the bar to the side panel horizontally near the top and do the same a couple of feet further down. Then bolt and wing nut them on to the main panel. Hope that makes sense! 😬
Hello and thankyou for your reply back to me that makes sense to do it that way thankyou very much for that I will get photos if RUclips will allow me to and give you my progress on mine. Watching your videos has help me a lot and I've done it all by the book too. I've had mine out on a few occasions for charity events and I must say it is very popular 👍👍🙂🙂
Thanks - nice video. I have the one on new penny still with the speckled yellow case. A 1d version sold yesterday at auction for £880 if you're wondering what it's worth now!
The speckled yellow case ones look fabulous! Nice investment there then! 👍🏻
Congratulations! The Eriba is an iconic caravan, well-made in the south of germany and with a little care you will have much fun with him for many years 9:31 . We own a 420 and wont miss it.
Sat in ours now, so relaxing! I agree they’re fabulous! Happy travels in your 420. ☀️
We’ve got a 320…with a mover..but no shower curtain.,
@@griswald7156 I also have ka mover - my wife! She ist the best mover, Pusher and puller J
@@jeandechabrier3998 how could i fit your wife to my chassis ?
nice tx a lot ! Merci beaucoup !
Absolute pleasure!
Merci de la France, demain je me lance, I go to the shop for le materiel 💪💪
Bonjour! Great to hear and lots of luck! 🍀
All you need now is a set of Supercar dodgems...
Wouldn’t say no to that myself even! 😁
Hello ive been studying your videos and ive decided to make one myself, now my question is does it have to be 12mm ply and laminate both sheets as i have one long 18mm ply would that do without lamination o do you have to have two sheets stuck together thanks 3🤔
Sadly, this is the way I was taught and built so not sure using an 18mm would work as it’s all measured to create grooves for the top and bottom. Good luck!!
@@amusementsrevisited thankyou for your reply. The one I'm doing is near on finished and hopefully should work as it should but like you say in the mouse video it's a pain in the backside
Enjoyed that very much! Eish i had a pound for every time i helped to build up and pull down a set of swingboats! .
Thank you! Must admit this set was a pleasure to own and run
I love Amusement Parks! Haven't been to one in a long time. Thanks for the visit. I am a professional artist and I share my paintings and demos here. So much to see and hear on RUclips. Cheers on a Wednesday!
Just had a look, very beautiful artwork! Thanks for watching 🥰
Thank you so much! Welcome!
Mudder hu
Thanks for watching!
Pinball Ancestor! I believe Trust Anyone who doesn't believe in Evolution 😆
Absolutely! That said I do adore the vintage Gottlieb machines...fabulous artwork on them!
@@amusementsrevisited I love the design of the threedimensional cast metal parts (kind of loom shuttle shape?) with the wire rails. Early pinball playfield layouts are really inspiring.
Wonderful video - do you have scans of the two triangular cards? I am working on a restoration
Thank you! I only have the score card, but I should also say at this point, it wasn't 100% accurate to the original, but happy to send it over if you'd like it.
@@amusementsrevisited thank you - I sent you an email
Really good series enjoyed it. I am finishing off a fortune teller build at the moment and then... You have inspired me to build a striker. On a side note have you ever made a fairground curved mirror ?
Thank you so much for your positive comments; much appreciated! The fortune teller build sounds great, that’s on my to do list. Lots of luck with yours. Made a couple some years back from acrylic glass, absolute pain to do though. 🤣
Would A la4ger striker be just double the size and would the striker be double the size ?
Thanks for your message! You can make the box about a third bigger, but keep the same width along with the backboard, then make the backboard higher (same width again) and add a set of legs and the rear for stability.
@@amusementsrevisited Thank you ..I liked your kids swingboat build ...was going to build a set but was put off ..as one needs a design build plans I have been told and don't know the next steps even where to get such a thing ..pity ..
First class well done 😊
Absolute favourite ride of ours, and thanks for the sub too!
@@amusementsrevisited I was interested in building swingboats but have asked about and it seems I have get a design build first etc ..couldn't get any further as didn't know where to turn to ...
@@cathedralImages yes sadly any rides you want to build must have design review on and ADIPS testing (for insurance purposes) if wanting to take them out. Rundles is where we get our rides tested so perhaps a good place for you to look into costs (depending on the ride you wanted testing).
@@amusementsrevisited Thank you 😊
@@cathedralImages Should also add, if you buy a set of Swingboats that need 'doing up' and have previous ADIPS paperwork, you should be able to forgo the design review.
