Thanks for the info + video!
Just because someone pulls out a Platinum to pay for lunch doesn't mean they're only doing for the status symbol. Rather, I'll bet the vast majority of CC holders are not into this CC game. Rather, they just have 1 card that they always use. I have a few well off friends that I've tried to advise of these strategies...but they don't care. I'm told they have much more important things to worry about.
Fair point, although I would say a lot of those people could probably get a lot more value for like 10 min of work in terms of submitting an application for a new card that could serve them better. Thank you for watching Greg!
@MattWelterOfficial agreed. Just a few minutes would do it.
What's funny to me is how Amex makes money through spending, yet the platinum is horrible for spend. I recently got the Altitude Reserve, i'm considering upgrading my Gold to Platinum because the credits are easy for me (My dad has been wanting a NY times subscription for a while, easy to do the United travel bank and use Uber cash) and that card would just immediately get sock drawered if I got it.
Good advice,thank you.
Thanks so much for watching!
Matt, Great content brother. You broke it down really nice and I do think people get the premium cards to flex and don’t really use the benefits or have to go out of the way to use them. You prepay for those benefits and they are just given back in little chunks throughout the year. I am on team cashback right now. I can’t travel with little kids so none of that stuff interests me. I have two Amex cards. 1 business and 1 personal I think even having the no af Amex cards people still look at you like wow you got an Amex. I think people still think that Amex cards are hard to get but they aren’t if you are a customer Amex wants I guess. I have a high income and I don’t want any of the premium cards. Maybe 95 dollars if there’s value that I get back more than the fee. Hard to put value on something that is well I get this benefit but how often do you use it? Like you said everyone has to figure out what makes sense to you. Right now cashback cards with no points is my favorite right now. Appreciate the video sir.
Thanks so much Jeremy!! And I completely agree with you. At the end of the day, it’s all about making sure you understand your benefits and that you are tangibly getting more value than the fees you need to pay.
I have been looking for a good travel card. Right now i have the venture one. I love how the CSR you can use points to hyatt, since i work for them. The venture one basically pays you $5 for their card. Amex wont work for me with their credits. Wells Fargo Autograph Journey i like cause you get 5x on air purchased and dont have to book trough them. I travel on AA at least 10 times a year, so just have no clue where to go.
I have a low income too but my future wife and I will be combining our work income together and I’m still trynna get her into credit cards .. she’s got started with a Discover It which is guaranteed to graduate next month so she’s doing good so far!
Do you currently have any Premium Credit Cards? Let me know ⬇
I have two and got the platinum in September 2023 (second half of the year) so I could double up on certain benefits in the first year. my other is the Marriott Brilliant which I got in August of this year. great video very informative

I've had it for many many years, my only complaint is i disputed a Ebay charge... Ordered a inflatable flamingo for the pool... The seller sold me a disgusting worn out garbage flamingo "raft" instead with the head cut off... sent them pics and everything.. "denied the dispute" it was like a 30 dollar item... lol not sure what happened there..
now imagine just having an Amex gold and platinum and having your annual fee for just those two cards be $1,020 dollars for just those two cards is that worth it?
Did you ever try safety razors? I've been on the same $20 pack of blades for like 10 years, much better experience than big box store razors. Also agree with your parking strategy for Seattle sportsball games, easy to find free parking and can be a nice walk - at least during baseball season.
I want to point out something in this comments thread that's probably already been pointed out... Especially as someone who feels like they recently got burned by the .06 cent redemption value of Amex. While Capital One made technically have redemption value, you can do something along the lines of cover travel costs and get $0.01 per point. I've had this card for almost 3 years and I've never had a problem doing that and I effectively consider this card as having a baseline of $0.01 per point redemption value. Unless your listeners somehow happen to make charges that don't code as such... Never any hotels. Never any car rentals. Honestly, I've not really paid so much attention to which types of charges allow me to do that but I've never had a problem redeeming for $0.01 per point as cash back. I consider the card on par with Chase and I consider the cash back redemption value to be superior to that of Amex. The venture x also gives you the $300 credit plus the 10,000 annual Capital One points. Those Capital One points, as I mentioned, can easily be cashed in at one cent per point. That means that it effectively gives you $400 in benefits annually. The effective annual fee is literally $-5 frickin dollars.
My annual fees are over $2000 but I can offset those annual fees. As long as I know I can offset the fees I will get more cards 😅
It sounds like you are being thoughtful in your credit card pursuit. My fees are about $1k, mostly from the Amex Platinum. The others are either low or no annual fee cards. I revisit the Platinum around annual fee time and almost canceled it this year. Monthly statement credit fatigue is real and it’s work to use the credits & justify the AF. That being said, you’re only young once, go for it. Those premium cards will give you a lot of benefits, especially traveling internationally. As long as your income is growing, you use the cards responsibly and get good value, enjoy them.
I have 10 annual fee cards with an annual fees total of $2,970. This all changes in 2025 because I’ll be downgrading most of these cards
no, the best property to redeem on the hilton card is the Waldorf Astoria Maldives.... Just get 6 aspire cards per couple and stay 6 free nights there.....
Haha that would be ideal! Thanks for watching!
Perfect timing, I was literally reevaluating my annual fees and looking to cut some fees down as I have gotten to over 2K in annual fees. You bring up a lot of good things to consider. One thing I'm looking at is overlapping benefits like Priority Pass as I currently have 3 Priority Passes and I don't need that much.
Awesome. Really glad this video was valuable! Absolutely- overlapping benefits is a great way to understand which Cards to cut, because if you can get similar benefits across multiple Cards, you probably don't need more than one, centralized one. Thanks for watching Luis!
Pump that rookie numbers up lol I'm sitting at 3k right now. Mainly due to multiple aspire cards
Nice Brad! I'll get there someday haha.
Matt, I am at the stage in my life where no AF cash back cards are where I go for now. I have kids and to travel or to try and get value out of hotel cards won’t happen. You can write off the business cards AF correct? I know you can’t write of the personal cards. But business you can write off the AFs. So that might make it easier but I dnk. This all seems high to me anything over 95 dollars is to rich for my blood lol.
Yes, you are correct that you can write off Business AFs! Which like you said certainly helps haha. Totally fair- whatever fits your lifestyle or preferences the most, different paths for everyone. Appreciate your support as always Jeremy!
Great job on RUclips ♥️
Thanks so much for watching Vicki!
What is the total annual fee in your Credit Card Setup? ⬇ 🎥Watch this video on 10.5 Things I Stopped Buying: ruclips.net/video/JKLtiVt541I/видео.html
👍🏻
Thanks so much for watching!
Great video, Matt! Annual Fees are definitely something to consider when getting a card. I agree that the amount of value that someone can get from a credit card should equal or outpace the annual fee. The annual fees in my setup total $344 with the Hilton Honors Surpass ($150), IHG One Rewards Premier ($99), and the Chase Sapphire Preferred ($95). I think I am getting more than $344 in value out of these cards because I will use the $50 Hilton Credit every quarter, even if it's to buy a Hilton Gift card. When i redeem my annual free night certificate with IHG, I pick a room that would normally cost quite a bit more than $95 if I was paying cash. I haven't used my CSP $50 travel credit yet, but I plan to use that in the spring of 2025 before the end of year one of me having the CSP.
Nice John! Yeah that is what it's all about. Making sure that you are specifically getting more value than the annual fee. It's awesome that you are tracking the benefits you are using and are confident in those outpacing the fees. Thanks so much for your support as always!
The real hack is for military. No annual fees on Chase or Amex 🤑😎
Definitely haha. Thanks so much for watching!
I feel this 😂 I’ve been adding more hotel cards and a few are expensive. The ritz is basically a must cause of the sapphire lounge, but I also want the brilliant and those two alone are over $1k. Toss in the other hotel cards, VX, CSP, and a few others and it starts to get crazy
Definitely haha. It's hard to even realize it until we actually look at the Fees haha. At the end of the day, the annual fee itself doesn't matter as much as long as the perceived value is more than the Fee. Thanks for watching Cody!
Very thoughtful video Matt. If your home airport had a Sapphire Lounge or C1 lounge as well, do you think you’d still want the Platinum bc of the other benefits (& the your airport would still have a Centurion, of course), or would you opt for one of the other cards, since those other 2 have free guests for their lounges? (For now, anyway 🙂)
That would definitely be a consideration I'd have to make. I would still for sure get the Amex Platinum at some point at least for the welcome bonus. In terms of long-term though, I could definitely see myself just running with the Venture X if there was a C1 lounge in SEA as well. Really appreciate you watching!
Annual fees +5
Thank you for watching!
Why not go for the chase sapphire reserve. It does have technically a lower annual fee of $550?
Doesn't work for my own situation living in SEA with no Chase Sapphire Lounge & not a straightforward way to cancel out the annual fee with tangible benefits. Thanks for watching!
Very good informative video Matt!💪💪💪
Thanks so much Paul!
Matt look into the purchase protection benefit
True! Thank you for the suggestion!

excellent video! love your inputs!
Thanks so much Michael!
I recently started returning things and do a quick Google search for coupons before I purchase things online.
Interesting video. Love to see what you consider your financial splurges. Electric razors don't shave close enough. However if you get one, get a corded one - it will last forever. You still need to buy new blades but it's overall cheaper. I pay for RUclips premium plus some the Platinum card wipes away. Tipping - only on traditional tip roles - sit down service to people making a tip wage, bell services, Uber driver, hair stylists, etc. Interesting video. You're young - pinch all those pennies now and fund that 401. 55 year old Matt will thank me for it.
Absolutely, great advice here Chad. Appreciate you watching!
Agree with most of these. Definitely learned alot about credit cards and the “game” recently. I was wondering if you would end up upgrading your car when it made enough sense to become a write off. For EX: if your taxable income was like over a certain treshold and it just made sense to buy one (using whichever tax exchange/code). I hope that makes sense 😂
True True! Yes I would love to if it made sense! Thanks so much for watching Ricardo!
Can’t write off the car against your W2 income. Technically can write it off against business income, but that really comes with a lot of caveats. For 1, it’s a huge audit flag. 2 - you have to get a certain class of vehicle to write the whole thing off in year 1 vs depreciating it over 15 years, and it would have to be 100% for business use. 3 - there’s a principle called “ordinary and necessary” for writeoffs. Maybe Matt has another business that he doesn’t talk about, like contracting or plumbing or chauffeuring where a vehicle would be more justified. It would be frankly difficult to convince an IRS auditor that a vehicle is necessary to successfully run a Credit Card RUclips business.
Thanks for the info + video!
Appreciate you watching Jimmy!
Matt, Great list you put out. You missed a few cards from B of A like the unlimited cash rewards CC. Although it's 1.5 percent but with B of A honors it can be a lot more. Can you do a Business one with all the cash back cards and your rankings?
Definitely Fair. A lot of sneaky value with the Bank of America Rewards program. Yes- I can definitely add that video idea to my running list! Appreciate you watching Jeremy!
Dang! You hit it - A Travel card you cannot travel with LOL
Haha exactly 😂Thank you for watching Kim!
Great point, Matt. Many places will NOT accept AmEx Internationally bcuz of the high fees.
True!!
Amex eventually solved a mistake -I made- when booking but it took MONTHS. Literally. I was in regular contact with the hotels. Near daily (half world away). Sent contact information, e.g. Senior Reservation Supervisor (name, email & tel#), to my AmEx reps who REPEATEDLY claimed “no response” … to repeat. It all worked out.
Was considering the GOLD. Fee went up. DD bene is not for me (drink coffee black, no sugar & that shite is nasty IMO). Also, don’t typically use Resy. There are so many Mom & Pops near us. Been traveling a lot. Costs for hotels & flights are (almost always) higher thru AmEx than Chase. Platinum has the Saks (2, $50/year) which was great cuz I could buy Bombas (long lasting, but $$); however, they’ve seeming done away with Bombas…sigh
Got it. Yeah for you it seems like the Gold Changes were not good at all haha. So totally understand your points and why you'd want to avoid the Trifecta. Appreciate you watching Kim!
when the whole tipping culture started, i do admit that i was basically shamed into tipping for any and everything. now that its gotten so out of hand, basically just numb to the whole terminal-flip-while-standing-right-there tactic. if its pick up, im not tipping at all. if its dine in then my tip is based upon the services rendered.
Yeah completely agree with this! Appreciate your support!
Matt, Great video sir. There is definitely a lot of stuff people pay for and don’t realize they are paying for it. I like to get the streaming services during Black Friday they are usually a lot cheaper per month. The tipping culture has definitely gotten out of control. I don’t go to restaurants much because they are too expensive for a family of 5. We normally just eat in or maybe once a week eat out but eat at home when I order to go.
Thanks so much Jeremy. Yeah totally understand that. Eating out is so dang expensive these days. Appreciate your support!
Hey Matt! Great video well done sir!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate your support Sean!
Tipping 👏🏾 it truly has gotten out of hand! Love the way you articulated your point
Thanks so much Key! Really appreciate your support!
Things i tip for: table service Things i do not tip for: everything else
Totally agree!
If I’m at a restaurant and standing up, I’m not tipping. If I’m ordering to go, I’m not tipping. If I’m sitting for a meal and the service is at least meh, you’re going to get at least 20% from me and if it’s great service may be as high as 30%.
Very fair! Thank you for watching!
I quit tipping, yes. I've never heard anyone going to jail for not tipping(I'm not afraid my mental health is like Bitcoin). I travel more to abroad, and no other country has tipping . I'm living life with credit cards
Haha very true!
You clearly have never worked in the service industry. Those employees rely on tips for their income to pay their bills. In some states they don’t even get minimum wage so you not tipping is extremely rude and disrespectful so maybe don’t go out if you can’t afford to tip. In other countries they don’t tip because the service workers get salaries and it’s included in their wages.
@jordanginos9557 I get it. But, not to be rude or sound angry. Is not my fault that they chose to work there, right? I'm not gonna feel pity. I also worked in a high school part-time job ( lifeguard), went to college, had debt, and worked as well as a graduate. Got my full-time job. The American dream, baby. If I can do it, everyone can. No excuse for you to work in the service industry. Again, I don't mean to sound rude or offensive.
In America it’s rude not to tip in restaurants so yeah it is disrespectful. Maybe stop going to restaurants then because nobody is going to want to serve you if you’re going to be cheap because you don’t believe in tipping. Don’t waste their time.
@jordanginos9557 I see. I get it. I'm not enticing everyone to do it. I'm just saying that no one in the USA has gone to jail for not tipping 🤷 . If it is not a law, why should I tip? . It's not my fault there is not a law. Rule or not, I'm not the Congressman. My advice for the service people which I respect. Need to go there " congress ". Reference: 38 years in the USA never had a problem in restaurants in the USA. You can call me cheap, low life, or rude, It does not affect me. I didn't choose the tipping system in the USA, and no law required me to pay the tip. All this is not my fault ( customer). This is all thanks to the red, white, and blue 🇺🇸. Take it up there. I'm a law-abiding citizen. I dont create law I just following it. Again, they are great ppl they deserve an actual salary, not work for tip. This is what I want. Of you want to tip sure. I think they deserve regular salary
