If you follow your M3/4 videos and the videos on here look familiar, that's because they used to be on another channel I created called M3 Diaries. For reasons I won't go into, I had to delete it. Due to numerous requests, I've decided to put them back on-line on this new channel. I'll still be doing videos on my car (and others).
Hope you enjoy!

BMW M3 Competition Package - Week 1 thoughts
So let's get the disclaimer out of the way, this video was made for two friends that were waiting on M3 CP's and wanted some thoughts and I couldn't be bothered to write it all down!
So if you find it long and boring then apologies.
It's interesting watching this 6 months and 10k on as I know so much more about the car. Shall be putting up a 10k video shortly.

So this was the video two that I did. As requested it was outside the car going over things I'd done already.
AC Schnitzer M4 Comparison

This car was the reason I bought an M3. Having been a bit despondent with the standard suspension setup and lousy wheel control (given that slug of torque), I decided against buying an M3 BUT once I'd driven this car for the first time, it showed with decent coilovers, it could be a brilliant car. This was my first trip back comparing my standard CP to the M4. I have since then now got the same...
Bedford Trackday in BMW M3 Competition Package

Shot a while back now - my first track day with the M3. Car was great apart from the brakes (something I've sorted now). Was interested to see at the beginning how got on with TC on (in interests of research). Skip to about 15 mins to see it all a bit quicker. And yes I know the brakes wouldn't have been helped by having the TC on!!

So first of all, apologies on the shaky camera. I left the image stabilisation on which is why it looks a bit bouncy - I promise the ride isn't that bad! I always knew I'd probably go for an all coilover setup on the M3 as whilst improved, there was still a limit to the rebound quality of the standard dampers. Since filming this video (which was a while back now), I've adjusted the dampers furt...
BMW F80 M3 vs M3 F80 Competiton Package

So I was asked loads of times what was the difference between the non CP and CP cars. Before I started changing mine (in fact the week before), I called up those nice people at Chandlers Brighton to see if they could lend me a non CP MY 16 M3/4. Unfortunately we had a few issues with a) weather, b) technical issue with microphone and c) me being a plonker and leaving behind some kit so apologie...
Looks like Gatwick Airport car park to me!
Good spot!
Wow sounds insane! Tempted to do it to mine. Do you know if this may affect the warranty?
Great review. Thanks. Liked and subscribed.
What colour is the CP?
It's San Marino Blue
What exhaust tips have you fitted on your CP and how do you find the finish holding up against the usual bmw pitting on the darker tailpipes?
They are the Cyba exhaust tips. Bought them via PM on Bimmerpost. Have to say nearly 30k miles on, they have held up really well.
Where is the homelink button on a 2017 Bmw M3 Competition Package? To set it up i need to press and hold that button, but this car har iDrive system instead of Homelink system.
Hi. What's your daily fuel consumption? Thanks for nice video.
Over nearly 30k now I've averaged just under 25mpg.
enjoyed your review thanks. Ive been looking at getting a used m4 comp pack for a while now. Enjoyed watching it. cheers
Gotta make more vids. Quality and info is perfecto 👌
Great review! is it true that 2016 M3/M4 base had revised dampers all around that makes the ride more comfortable on uneven pavement? as I don't see that changes recorded in the bimmerfest.com M3/M4 MY thread.
There have been changes the whole way through. MY 16 cars got revised dampers of which the CP shared the same rear damper and only front one was unique. They also did a fair amount of work on software to improve things. It's still continued with MY18 cars now getting revised software to move things on again.
Bloody good review. Thanks. Going to trade in my RS5 for a ZCP M4 soon.
Guys... M3 Competition must haves ?
Set the idrive to show the sports displays rather than nav/phone book next time 😂😉
Enjoyed the video, top work! Would hope a set of carbon ceramic disks would have solved your issue with the brakes.
Problem is I track the car regularly and I can't afford to be replacing disks. Have solved the problem now.
Is this stock exhaust?
Had to think about it. Nope, this a modded exhaust. Removed secondary cats and modded rear box on standard CP exhaust. Details of Paul who did it - facebook.com/Paulscarwelding/ There's a video of it when was on dyno being mapped here - ruclips.net/video/PUe3kksYA9E/видео.html Will get round to doing a video when I get time as lots has changed on car.
Why would you get these two cars together and not drag race to see the difference the extra 25bhp makes. Spoilt the whole video for me.
Because there is no difference between them. It's all a load of crap that BMW use as a marketing ploy. We all know that the standard car makes far more than quoted anyway. A drag race would have shown absolutely nothing. 100bhp difference yes you would see but 25bhp (if it was even 25bhp) would be down to who pulled away better. Of all the things that make the CP different to the standard car, the power is the least important as there is bugger all difference.
I've driven probably 15 M3/4's now and only the GTS actually felt any different and actually I wasn't hugely impressed as didn't think it was that much faster. The torque curve on the non CP and CP are near enough identical. That 444bhp is at 7000. I had hoped it would make the power delivery a bit more spirited at the top end when standard car flattens but it just isn't the case. So no, I haven't driven both cars next to each other at the same time but I've been in and out of both CP and standard cars enough times to know there is just nothing in it. Amazed you were pushing out over 500bhp - about 460-470bhp seems to be around the norm on a CP car. Now a mapped car IS a different matter simply because the torque curve takes a HUGE hike. I've done 5k now with a map (was dyno'd at 537bhp) and it is just a different car. Makes the standard car feel very pedestrian regardless of whether it's a standard car or CP.
GTSussex I totally agree when you say the top end flattens. It's something I wouldn't of expected and wouldn't of ever found out on a test run with a Bmw sales man sat by my side ha. But since having the car 6months from new iv noticed it and if I'm honest it puts me off the car. I'm just waiting on the new x drive M5 :DD
Completely agree, the new M5 looks very promising. Looking forward to a test drive! In all honesty a bit too big for me these days but still keen to try!
I now have an M4 with the Competition Pack also in San Merino blue and it looks stunning, can I ask which carbon front lip & splitter, boot spoiler and rear diffuser do you have? are they the BMW ones or some other after market parts. How are they standing up to the test of time? Who did you get to fit them. Regards Ian
Hi Ian The front splitter is just the standard plastic one. If you look at the underside of mine, you'll understand why I didn't bother with a CF one. Having put my front up slightly since originally adding my coilovers, I don't get the scrapes I used to - it's a rare happening now but I'd cry if it was CF! This and the rest (which is CF) was BMW sourced and fitted. I scoured the forums and found the best pricing and asked my dealer to match (and they fitted for free before car was delivered). Overall, all standing up fine. As said, front splitter has taken a few bashes (and someone I lent the keys to managed to pull it off reversing) but it's still going strong and I know that it's not that expensive to replace. Hope that helps! Guy
Only just catching up on your VLOGs and really enjoying the personalisation of your car - shallow I know but the look of the car with this latest addition is fantastic. I did smile when you mentioned the compromises and how individuals who choose an M3 are looking to go quickly so shouldn't be worried by that which may not be the case if they owned a 320d - don't you know that a 320d is probably the quickest car on UK roads :) Regards, Kevin.
Hah! It's usually 116d's that give me the most 'come on, have a go' grief! Having spent a week driving a loan 430d, you realise that whilst the power is night and day different, the real joy with the M3 is the feel and the experience. It's not perfect by a long way but everything is a compromise in one way or another!
I had my little M135i in for its first service and due to an error by the dealer on some previous work I ended up with an M4 Competition Pack for 24 hours (post run in service status). From the moment you press the start button the car fizzes with energy / power - it really came home to me that this wasn't like my little car turned up a few notches, its a different beast altogether. The wheels do look better in the flesh and this particular car was a Yas Marina Blue colour which I did like as well. Yes the ride was 'choppy' at times but nothing I couldn't live with. Thoroughly enjoyed the day, the performance, the looks, etc - in summary the overall experience and I've been surfing the BMW UK used site looking at M3 CPs (I need the rear doors for commitments) every so often! And finally much like you I tend to get similar grief from Golf GTDs! Regards, Kevin.
We have an M235i Vert so I know exactly what you mean in terms of comparisons. M3 lovers will hate me saying it but the M235i's engine is just soooo much more classy. The M3 (mine especially) is just angry but there is that 'buzz'! Always amuses me when get in the 235 - just feels so slow! Yet spend a week in the Disco and it feels like a time machine. Then you get back in the M3 and it's like "holy cr*p" :-)
got my first track day coming up in my m2 and was going to run ferodo pads and just change to dot4 break fluid. what was your set up? oem pads and braided hoses? i do like bedford, great learning ground drove an m4 there with carbon ceramics, they were amazing.
I'm now running Pagid RS29's with braided hoses and 710 Racing Fluid. Much better.
I've had 2 days at Bedford and was thinking about upgrading to AP/Brembos. Do you think just changing the pads and fluid will suffice? Could put that money toward better dampers :) Also would you mind letting me know where you found them? Thanks
Hard question. Personally I'd sort the dampers before anything else but some might think otherwise. I'd love a big brake kit but I just can't justify the cost at the moment. The Brembo pads lasted longer than standard but still weren't great. Pagids, fluid and hoses are pretty good - a world away from stock. I'm probably going to fit the Revozport brake cooling system before next track day in a few weeks. It's the cooling that's the issue. I'm probably going to Cup 2's as well which will only make things worse. Brake bits I got from Martin at raceparts.biz - really knowledgable chap that supplies a lot of the BTCC teams.
Firstly thanks for your videos, I watched them before getting my m3 comp pack in Feb and don't regret it. I'm still learning to exploit the car for what it is and it's been a fun learning process. I would love cup2s but I thought they don't do them in the 265s that we have at the front? I also powder coated my wheels in black which I have been told might be affecting heat dissipation, hence after 3 track days I've almost warped my front brakes! Will have a word with Martin thanks again. Would love to see a new trackday video with your new mods.
Off to Bedford next month so will make sure I take some cameras. I have a set of black 19' M437 wheels which I'll be using for the Cup 2's!
congratulations on a stunning car
I bought the exact same car on April 14th, 2017, here in Canada. I bought San Marino Blue and Ultimate Package (which includes competition) I am going Dinan Stage 1 shortly and will move to 2 & 3 in steps, so I can enjoy each one separately. I plan to firm up the rear end and drop the car an inch (all better for the track) I am considering Volk TE37s and a squaring up of the wheels (not sure about this quite yet) I have the black 437m wheels as I felt the worked better with the San Marino, plus I liked the 19" look better than 20". Unlike you I am extremely OCD and have washed the car 19 times in 27 days. I paid for a clay bar on Tuesday because the dealer, or their PDI guys, caused water spot etching on the paint and glass. It never felt totally clean from day one. Since the clay bar the paint really seems to glow. Somehow I find this colour actually looks better on a bright rainy day. The water beads (when well waxed) seem to reflect the light in just such a way. Hell, I bought it on a rainy day. Of course, I am from Vancouver, so it's always raining here. Anyway, great car, except for the lack of feel in the steering. I love the M Performance exhaust sound, even though my uncle says it sounds like an Asian tuner's car. "Shut up Uncle Neil!"
San Merino my ideal choice. shakir orange is great too. agree stock exhaust tips too small. I think I'd run 19" wheels on a CP for daily comfort?
Great video, I've just bought one exactly like this in the same colour. This colour is stunning. I'm thinking of putting some spacers on it and this has given me the info on sizes that I'm looking for👍🏼.
If you dont mind me asking what do you do for a living
yea agree e92 with an akrapovic is lovely. Obviously the M3/m4 interior is a step forward but hate the fact that sound is pumped through speakers. Also my bro-in-law had a m135i and I preferred that to an m4 I heard the other day. Love the M cars so probably get an m4 or possibly a m5 if I feel the need for 5 doors 👍
Half the reason I have an M3 - have two car seats in back for kids. Love the fact I can pick up/drop off on school runs. Disabling the ASD is pretty easy and car sounds a lot more natural. I've changed the exhaust now. Whilst it doesn't actually sound any better quality wise, it's quite angry. That 35i engine is just lovely. But have to say, now mine's mapped there's about 200bhp difference between the two and God do you notice it. Must get round to doing another video....
yea I've driven both and ended up buying a Ltd 500 e92 with all the trimmings. prefer high revving cars ( guess that's y I had 2 s2000s) and the v8 won me over. Not knocking the m4 as I'm thinking of getting one or the c63s. But if it's sound ure looking for then the e92 is by far the nicest sounding M car (luckily in life different ppl like different things) good video and lovely car 👍
E92 is frankly in a different league to F80 on sound - totally agree. We have an M235i as well and it also is much better on sound - far more classy. Guy down the road has an E92 and I always put my window down :-) You've got a lovely car!
just buy a low mileage e92 with gruppe M or akrapovic exhaust system 💦
Lovely cars but this is my daily and the F80 is in a different league for that purpose. Had it been a weekend toy, I'd have probably been tempted with an E92.
Just Bought M4, competition package but with M Performance Exhaust. It takes the programming of the flaps to a new level.
Hey! Another little trick is to turn the ignition on and put the car into sport or sport plus mode and then press the accelerator, this will open the valves and then when you hold the brake and start the car the valves are open. Could do with saving a bit of money haha
On your way to get the car detailed? lololol. Ummm... unless you have carbon ceramic brakes, or bought aftermarket low dust brake pads, that detailing on your wheels is going to last all of 1 day. After about 60 miles of driving, my wheels are caked with brake dust. I clean them several times a week.
Completely agree about brake dust which is why the wheels were removed and completely cleaned when body was detailed and then they were coated with GTechniq Wheel Armour to make them a damn site easier to clean. It's been worth it as residue just falls off them. Done the same thing with the 437's that are now on the car.
Funny, you look at reviews for that product in the UK and (1) there aren't many, but they're 5 stars, and (2) looking at Amazon's website in the US, it got 3 stars, and only 5 reviews. Seems no one has a product with thousands of satisfied customer reviews.
I have to confess i was cynical as to how long it would last but it has. Main thing they told me was not to use any wheel cleaner and don't go to any car wash places where they do. Just pressure wash and sponge. As said, my CP wheels came off the car a while back now and are stored. Won't go back on again now until car's traded in.
I've wanted to get some gold or copper colored rims, but I suspect they'll look worse than the black ones after half the driving distance. Have to pull over every mile and hand rub them clean, lol.
Hah! Have to say I have Pagid pads now and they are much better than the BMW standard ones.
Yes, the San Marino blue is much more vibrant than the Estoril Blue
Hello. how is the back seats? stupid question probably, but I was thinking bye one as a daily driver..
Use them with car seats for both kids no problem. Really practical.
One of the best consumer car reviews I've watched for many years. The subject matter of what the car is like to live with daily and how certain parts of its set up affects what the car is like on British roads really makes a difference. When I sell my current car I know what I'll be replacing it with!
Thanks - really need to pull finger out and do a 15k review now as have learnt a lot of things.
Please do. Awesome videos!
Oh man...that sounds sweet as a nut...lovely stunning car
The wheels are the best thing about the Competition Package. Can you order those wheels for the regular M3?
Not that i am aware of. They are starting to appear on Fleabay. I'd sell mine to be honest (have sat on a shelf for a while now as fed up with daily ride) but would dent my trade-in so keeping them.
VMR sells them on their website
My favorite reviewer has disappeared. Ended up ordering ZCP with 437's, waiting on delivery and can really use another clip!
Sorry, just been hugely busy with work and something had to give. I will have something up in next couple of weeks as I have changed a lot and learnt huge amounts which I need to share.
The burbling in the CP keeps the turbos spooled at low rpms in preparedness for quick throttle performance.
You'll find on both CP and non CP in Sport + there is distinctly less lag with turbos staying spooled. Wouldn't say CP is any different. Burbling is merely cosmetic, not that I'm complaining as it still makes me chuckle, especially as my exhaust hasn't been standard for a while now. Will get vid out when get a moment.
Hi GTsussex, I'm considering putting a clear bra on the front of my M4. Want to know what your thoughts are on that...have you considered that for your car? Thanks.
Wish I had to be honest - have lots of stone chips on the car after 15k. Problem was by the time I realised i should have done it, I already had the chips!
I've only ever heard bad stories of yellowing clear bras. I wanted to wrap the whole car, actually, and my detail guy (who stood to gain $5,000) talked me out of it. To me, that says two things: 1. He's really honest. 2. Clear wraps must have issues.
Thank you for your videos on the m3 competition pack! They have been very informative.
Again, I have to say, FANTASTIC video! Very well, I do have one question. I noticed the lower carbon fiber chin spoiler/splitter. Precisely who makes it and do you have a link for them? Thanks again fro a great vid. -Cheers
Thanks. The lower chin spoiler is just a BMW M part and it's actually the normal plastic one. The amount it gets scratched underneath, I couldn't ever cope with it being carbon fibre - would end up crying every time I scraped it!! :-)
OMG. Where do you live? You scape your front lip? Must be a lot of steep speed bumps there. There aren't many options yet for front lips. The best looking ones for the F80, so far, are from AC Schnitzer. They are expensive though. It's too bad we can't get the cool brake cooling tunnel Clubsport lips, but the F80's design doesn't allow them to make them for it.
Fantastic video! Thanks so much. Seems everything else is done by kids who are only obsessed with absolute performance numbers. Such a relief to see a vid by an adult who realizes that these things are actually designed to be daily drivers. Placing an order after the first of February. -Cheers
Could the slip in the rear be explained by differences in tyres? Or were both running on the same set?
Nope, they run different sizes. I've run had the standard tyres on 19's on my car and yes, I think a lot of the difference in slip IS down to the tyres and I question just how differently they actually are set up. Way behind with posting a video to cover all of this (will get it done soon!).
Supreme UK The slip is because of 2 things. The comp pack has a revised, stiffer suspension for better handling as well as wider tires. While a regular m4 comes with 255's in the front, 275s in the rear, the comp pack uses 265s in the front and 285s in the rear. Same setup as the m4 gts. wider tires, more grip.
GTS is a little different as it runs on Cup 2 tyres rather than MPSS or Conti's which CP has as standard. Also runs 19's on front rather than 20's. I've got a set of Cup 2's (in the same sizes) on 3rd party rims that I'm using for track days - completely different ball game once they are warm. Agree though that the difference between 275 and 285 rears is more noticeable that you'd imagine. I now run 295/19's (standard M5 tyres) for road use. Grip is in different league to the 275's.
that sounds CORRECT :)
Very nice m3 and good review 👍🏻
Had my ZCP order placed but backed out last 2nd. As a DD I felt I needed an ounce of Cush for my wife and kid (not totally selfish) actually it was the hardness of the CP seats that put me off not the lack of lumbar, wimp? Maybe a bit. But for my ears I did include the MPE with CF tips...Should be niiice. Thanks for the reply and really enjoy your clips, well done.
Thinking of going with the 437' 19's since presently an option, thoughts?? Yet again a fine clip.
Haven't had a chance to put up anything over the last few months due to work but I'll get something out shortly. In short, I've ditched the 20' 666 wheels and now run 437's instead. With my coilovers, the day-to-day setup now is vastly better as have much higher sidewalls. Put the 295 19 PSS from the M5 on the rear - very good traction.
really nice vid! Keep on going with those :) and I must say that the yellow m3 looks really good!
Good well balanced viewpoint keep them coming.
The color looks like estriol blue on regular 3/4 series to me, but the color looks sharp from any angle. BTW, Do you have the specs for your black tips? Especially the inside and length, I know I want 102mm out, but I'm not sure the inside and the length.
Very different in the flesh to Estoril Blue - camera can't always show it but darker and more purple. Afraid I don't know the inside and length. Sure someone will know the original diameter if you search hard enough - know original outside diameter is 73mm. Most tend to supply 90mm outside (which is what I have). A few used to do 100mm but now quite rare as 90mm way more popular. Have seem 100mm on Remus exhaust and personally I think they are too big but we're all different!
GTSussex okay, thanks for your reply. BTW, do you think your diffuser fits the 102mm tips?
I think it would be tight but possible. Not much around with 100mm tips to see but this might help you... ruclips.net/video/KuHvlbEOdpQ/видео.html
Could you give me a contact for your Cyba (not Cuba!) exhaust tips? Tried a search online, not getting anything back
The only way of ordering them was by posting up on Bimmerpost forum and the Derek PM'd you. I've just had a look and strangely all posts have been pulled - assume a sponsor complained. Might be worth messaging him (user name is Cyba).
