Unmistakebly the great alan Cumberland at the timpani. A pioneer of pedalling and changing the timpani parts of many 19th century according to the harmony and chords. The timpani parts of Dvorak, Verdi and countless other 19th composers are often horrible( not with Brahms, he wrote only for what the pedalless instruments of his time could provide). For lack of changing the notes rapidly before the invention of pedal timpani they mostly used the same two notes without regard of whether they fit into the harmony and chords or not. So, you get often horrible harmonic clashes, for instance an E natural in a D maj chord... It sounds a bit like our electric bass player in our school band, who could play only two notes. Having perfect pitch, ican´t listen to any recordings who apply this as written, legendary or not...Alan Cumberland was the first who changed this consistently. Sometimes a bit to much, but absolutely brillant. Nowadays it´s more and more common. Many timpanists around the world do it now, even in less well known orchestras....Alan Cumberland plays the same version as here also in the famous LPO recording with Giulini...This recording was the first i of Dvorak 7 i heard. and it changed my approach to timpani playing in those works forever,
Sounds amazing! I was born in 1979.
Have just been researching JS-Q for an article in "Gramophone" and the reports of this performance are extraordinary! What a joy to be able to hear it. Thank you.
Although Dante didn't include it in his version of The Inferno, there is a certain circle of hell reserved for the idiot that yells over the final pizzicato A...

Jesus! What a 1st horn player...in fact, all the brass were stunning. Bravo!
The greatest organ concerto! Do you have the 1973 concert of the London Symphony with Simon Preston playing this piece? At the same concert Pinchas Zukerman is the soloist of the second Bartok violin concerto!
Wow. Thank you so much for this incredibly valuable resource. May I ask what equipment you were using to record the programmes? In these days of digital everything, I always marvel at how good analogue & FM always sounded in my humble opinion.
Thank you for posting this. Elgar's choral music for me is one of the high points in all Western 'art' music. We are so privileged to have partaken in this glorious work, either by performing it or listening to it.
His best recording of this symphony by a Mile.
It's a real treat for me to hear this recording as my father Paul Kingsley is playing piccolo. He played flute and piccolo with the SNO for 35 years before he retired in 1984. The fact this was performed with HM Queen Elizabeth at the Royal Albert Hall is a real memento for me! Thank you for posting it. Noel kingsley
Gurrelieder Is a masterpiece. And this Is one of his best versions! R.I.P. great Maestro Andrew Davis!
Thank you for sharing this.I was at this concert in 1974, aged 6 (my first concert)! Some years later I discovered my mother’s recording of this piece by Rostropovich/Karajan and the BPO. It was my gateway into classical music and it is still one of my favourite pieces so to find this recording was really special for me.
I pity those who have never heard this work.
I have the second symphony too.If you're interested I can send it to you, I have also many concerts with Abbado and the LSO
Searching about since many years, Many thanks😊
Wow thank you! This was not easy to find.
Abbado was at his peak when he was conducting the LSO, great memories. According my opinion less relaxed in Berlin
I remember the performances. Splendid to hear them again after so long.
esto tiene tanto potencial para una escena dramática
Großartig!
Besser als die Studio-Aufnahme!
Großartig!
Stunning. Conductor and soloists at the height of their powers❤
Thankyou so much for this. I attended this performance whilst at uni. I did not know the work beforehand. The following day I ordered the box set recording by Boult. I have loved this work ever since.

RIP Mr Luxon. I'm grateful that you left us this performance of a work that's a favourite of mine. I think Charles Groves here gives an utterly persuasive reading.
The actual upload is wonderful. The tape seems to have a few 'blips' but nothing that should mar your enjoyment. The sound is spacious but one wishes the recording engineers had not toned down the important percussion section. Many, many thanks for uploading this valuable sound document.
Interesting point, I hear what you mean. However, there is plenty of timpani, if not too much. If you bring up the percussion you'll likely drag the timpani with it. Percussion can easily overpower in a cathedral acoustic though, always possible that is how the conductor wished it balanced, that is what I'd guess. It is incredibly clear though, all those wind lines come through wonderfully well, and there's still a sense of space around it too. I think they've done a great job (pun intended).
@@Stirlingv8 Many thanks for your kind and detailed post. Okay, I need to fess up. I am a percussionist and have played in this transcendental work so I must confess to being somewhat biased. The moment I whacked the tam tam was thrilling. All the best from the UK.
Em pleno auge as vozes citadas.
Caballe along with Price are one of the most beautiful sound but the problem for me is to understand the words while they sing.too bad
This is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard! It is miraculous that Ives was able to get this...amazing.
29:44
The acoustics of the Royal Festival hall are far better than the RLPO hall in Liverpool. A very interesting comparison is with the same piece and the same orchestra under Charles Groves recorded at the Liverpool phil available here on utube..
At 43:41 we hear the timpani solo C to D to Eflat roll
John Chimes on Ludwig Pro Symphonic timpani.
And at 47:10 we discover that the timpanist either can't count or can't follow the conductor's tempo (which hasn't changed). Either way we need a retake...
Thank you!! I love Klaus Tennstedt!!
The wonderful Cécile Ousset. I met her once after a recital at the Queen's Hall. Such a modest and unassuming person; we talked about the acoustics because she was worried that she might not be coming across properly.
For me, this rare performance tops them all. Jessye Norman in the soprano role is unreal.
I remember this performance back then. As good a one of this work as from anyone. Thanks.
Thanks for posting this! Just to add, the concert was given Sunday 29th October 1978. Also on the programme was Vaughan Williams' "Tallis Fantasia" and Benjamin Britten's "Purcell Variations and Fugue." Of the "Sea Symphony", the "Manchester Evening News" reported that Handford achieved "splendid results...some fine singing by the Halle Choir and also soprano Sheila Armstrong and baritone Rodney Macann in that order of merit."(!)
A superb post Thank you, Handford is almost forgotten today. Spent years assisting Barbirolli. Great to have this
This is great. Thanks
Superba interpretation!!!thank you!!
FANTASTIC! this is a very important recording! Thank you!
This is really excellent. Very fine sound. Thanks for posting your archive. Very very enjoyable!
Marvelous interpretation. Strong, firm, even masculine. Different. Love it.

Great to see that you are still going - thanks for the Tributes to Sir Andrew Davis.
Thank you! Been busy with house move. Had to put up something for Sir Andrew Davis however and do have more of his performances which will get uploaded. I'm nearly out of recordings up to 1983 and only handful from 1980s but loads from the 1990s onwards but possibly less interesting as newer but we'll see!
@@mcra2023 Whatever you have from the 90s will be interesting especially if the sound quality is as good as you are doing now. Please carry on.
