    At 17:26 we hear the forte timpani stroke on an E natural on the large timpani. Rachmaninov originally intended for only the lower strings to end this First movement but I tend to rather like the substitution of the timpani stroke. A lot of Conductors opt for the timpani ending as well. Petrenko with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra is a good example
