Hmm...from Tue-Sat, it's about 5 days, only Wide Area Pass cover 5 days. Below are some thoughts: 1. If you don't mind not using the pass for that one day, i might choose the Kansai Area pass as it is cheaper. 2. The longest distance is from Osaka to Himeji, which take about 1hr 3mins using Kansai Area Pass. (cannot use Shinkansen), if you don't mind the long ride to and from, then cheaper Kansai Area Pass is the chose. Unless you will travel much further distance. 3. I think the main advantage of getting the Kansai Wide Area pass, is using the faster Shinkansen ride, Hello Kitty train, and the unlimited reservation of train, and for much further distance. Whereas Kansai Area Pass, only allow 2 reservation, and cannot take any Shinkansen train. Hope it help with your decision.

When using the pass, you can take the JR Tokaido Sanyo Main Line Rapid, from Kyoto to Himeji, but it will take about 2hrs. Additional separate ticket is needed for faster train, and it take half the time. (not cover by the pass)

Yes, you can use the Kansai Area Pass from Osaka to Himeji station, but only the main JR line, the JR Tokaido Sanyo Main Line Rapid, it take about 1hr 32min. The pass don't cover the Shinkansen, so taking the JR line will take longer.

Why don't you try traveling from Ueno station to Kusatsu Onsen (if that's your destination), there is a direct train that start from 10am. (Kusatsu‧Shima train) The Tokyo wide pass cover the train ride. But when you get to the Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi station, the JR bus ride from the station to Kusatsu onsen is not cover. My first plan is to take Narita Express to Tokyo Station (covered by Tokyo Wide Pass, then take Hokuriku Shinkansen to Karuizawa Station. But the bus fare from Karuizawa Station to Kusatsu Onsen is 2240yen, so I'm thinking about going to Haneo station first (since it's still covered by Tokyo Wide Pass). From google, it does have the bus stop, but i can't advice on that since not been there before. But if i would, i still prefer the Ueno route, reasons : 1. After from flight, must be tired, i would prefer less train or bus transfer. Direct route is more preferred. 2. Don't have to worry if there will be bus at Haneo station, since it is in rural area and might be delay or cancel due to weather situation. 3. You can take the train from Toyko to Ueno instead of Karuizawa station. 4.
