The Yellow Boots Homestead
Португалия
Добавлен 16 янв 2023
Hi! We're a French-American family growing with the flow in Alentejo, Portugal. We moved here in May of 2022, after living in and near Geneva, Switzerland for the previous 10+ years. When we moved in, our boys were always in their yellow boots, exploring our land with their childlike wonder. Yellow like joy. Yellow like the sun. So The Yellow Boots Homestead felt right:)
We're working to build a holistic, nature-centered family homestead, focused on Natural Health, Permaculture/Regenerative farming, Wildlife and learning how to be more self-sufficient (while also building community of course!). Here you can find calming nature footage, our journey in regenerating and caring for the land, healthy recipes, yoga classes, and more.
Thank you for watching along on our journey to make a dream a reality, step by step, with lots of love and gratitude in our hearts.

Finishing Planting the Trees in our Homestead Orchard
Hello there!
We're Calla and Jon, and we've been working to transform a slope on our land into an orchard. We finally finished planting the trees, which feels like a big milestone! Now we need to get irrigation & cover crop set up so that we can keep them alive when the rainy season is done.
Thanks for watching! We were able to buy all the rest of the trees for the orchard thanks to the views that our video "Harvesting Rainwater on our Homestead"! Your views really mean so much to us.

Hello from our homestead in Alentejo, Portugal! Last week we had our first big rain and were so happy to see that the swales worked well at collecting and absorbing the rainwater. Jon and the boys went to a nearby monthly market and got the first trees to plant into the swales on the slope. It's such a great time to plant after a rain and we planted the first 6 trees using some of our Barbary F...

Hello from our Homestead in Alentejo, Portugal! Over the last 2 months we've been putting into place a water harvesting system called swales. We've put them in 3 areas so far- a small slope without vegetation & very little top soil, a big slope we're transforming into an orchard, and, most recently, in our veggie garden. We have had very little rain since summer, and this last week we had a cou...

Good
I love your work
That means so much- thank you💛
Well done, you're part of an ancient and cosmic motivated process. Besides the nutrients they provide us, trees are our friends and lungs of the earth. "Trees, through the process of photosynthesis, absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen, essentially acting like the lungs of our planet by providing the air we breathe; this is why forests are often referred to as the "lungs of the Earth." "If I were a tree, and someone made a swing on me, I would enjoy their laughter. I’d be big and strong and help the day move along, I would help the people breathe fresh air. Birds could build their nests in my branches, my leaves would be green and healthy. Birds could lay their eggs and new life would begin. When the autumn came by my leaves would turn to gold. One by one my leaves, would full to the ground. I would stand there bare, fast asleep just waiting, for spring to come and start again. If I were a tree." Pamela Lutwyche
Perfectly said:) Thanks for sharing these beautiful quotes! 🥰🥰
Adoro Monchique, uma pequena vila algarvia que fica entre a serra e o mar. Vou lá muitas vezes na minha autocaravana (motorhome)
Muito bom:)
So much for global warming. 😂 You should learn to grow trees from seeds and cuttings, it’s very simple. I’ve grown thousands all for nothing. I swap for other trees of different species.
Oh yes we do grow from seed and cutting as well, but for the orchard we wanted to get some older so we can enjoy the fruit sooner;) Thanks!
Poplars and willows not only are beautiful , grow fast, are easy to propogate, but are very important to foster a heaalthy ecosystem. Cuttings this time of year is enough.
Yes! We’ve planted both other parts of the land:)We planted a willow cutting last year by the lake and thought it didn’t make it, but I just saw it’s still alive- so happy! We learned that the leaves on the poplar are great for mulch too! Thank you and cheers to striving for a healthy ecosystem!
Nice dogs.
They’re pretty cute huh?
Loved the sequence of you guys showing the trees! So funny😂 and so great the news about the non-fruit trees, I also have tilias and italian cypress, all doing well! I had already commented on the white poplars in another video, I love them too, I bought a few 1m high last year and I swear some of them (the ones in the more fertile side of the land) are 3m now! (The others are big too but not like this😂) If you have the trees dying, check if you are in an area with phytophthora cinnamomi, it is a huge problem: in the area I am at, the land is contaminated with it, so people are planting resistant trees, mostly stone pine (I am also planting carob as it is immune, from what I read). Check out this site (Aromas e Boletos) (I have no relationship with them but bought some mycorrhyzae from them), they now sell forest trees with some sort of treatment / innoculation that makes them more resilient to drought and diseases, including p. cinnammomi. Good luck!
Would love a bit of footage from around your land…. Maybe a talk and walk or just a walk 😊 you’re making a difference, thank you
Thanks for sharing what you’d like! We were thinking to do one in the spring:)
Great video.
Thanks so much!
Beautiful . Good luck❤
Thanks!
I wonder how much rain you get per year? I’m in a very hot part of QLD and not a great rainfall and I reckon I could just about get away without irrigation etc. No swales, as my plants are living water tanks. Went 11 months this year without irrigation. Only reason irrigation is needed is for all the young plants I’m putting in regularly. Be interesting to see how your place progresses.
Funny to be watching your video and listen to you talking about the nursery in Monchique. We have a property there and all our trees are from this nursery. I highly recommended it as well. I'm lucky because it's like 300m from my property. 😅
Oh cool! Another good word for the nursery:) Thanks for sharing.
Which channel did you recommend in this video? I'm from Brazil and I love following your progress.
The Natural Farmer:) The link is in the description of our video-check it out! Thanks for following along:)
It would be great if you could inspire your neighbors to "swale". Might be a great way to mitigate wildfires. Forgive me if you've already mentioned it, but what about Olive Trees?
That’d be lovely! So excited to see how they do over time & hopefully the results will be inspiring for others to jump on the swale wagon haha:) We have lots of olive trees and want to plant more on the land as time goes!
Seems like you can't have too many swales on your property. Very happy for you folks!
It’s the year of the swales:)
...at some point, I imagine those fences covered with Hollyhocks. :)
Hollyhocks are so pretty!
So amazing to see this project coming to life and all the trees being planted. And the doggies playing!!
Thanks lovely:) Hehe glad you liked the doggy moments:)
Wouahh! It feels so great watching you planting so many plants and trees 🙏💕
Thanks for joining in our excitement:)
Can't wait to see the results. How's your winter garden doing?
Thanks! Us too! The winter garden I tried from seed was a big flop, but we just bought a bunch of cabbage starts and planted those:) Lots of kimchi, sauerkraut and baked cabbage in our future;) We’re also restructuring it and it’s taking shape:) Thanks for asking!
I see several large trees that have adapted to the rock substrate. Are you expecting the roots to break through the rocks? Looks like granite... is it a solid bank, or just lots of boulders and such. Another question, do you bring your birds into a protective shelter at nightime? Have you considered planting fava beans to "nitrogen fix" your soil? Dear friends of mine had an 80 acre ranch in a very dry environment. They had a large flock of Guinea Fowl, and chickens- but they didn't stand a chance with all of the predators. They even caged them in huge coops, but voles and weasels got through and decimated the flocks. My friends were elderly, and sadly just weren't up to keeping even with the cruel advance of nature. But for awhile, it was a beautiful thing to behold. Lastly, thanks for documenting your efforts, I wish this video was 3, or 4 years old, so I could see how things have worked out for you. 😁
Thanks for your comments and questions:) The rock isn’t granite- will try to show it better in a future video! We’re hoping the roots will navigate their way with time and continuing to build up the swales and cover them with living mulch. Yep we bring them into the coop at night. We had one flock taken out last year which was sad- we made some improvements to the coop and hope that keeps the predators out! The ducks don’t come back to the coop since finding the lake, so hoping to build them a platform once the lake is full. Thanks for looking out for our flock:) Yes:) We have some fava beans planted and planting other nitrogen fixers as well. Thanks again for watching and taking interest in what we’re up to:) Take care!
True.👍
✨
You should definitely add more swales!
Definitely;)
Do you plan on digging more swales?
Yes. Everywhere we can! Just need more hands and time haha
Can’t wait for the swales update during the rainy season!!
I thought u were supposed to put a couple of inches of dirt on top of the prickly pear in the fruit tree hole? Not putting the fruit tree directly on top of the prickly pear.
Yes! Minor adjustments to be made but happy with them so far!
@@chessman483 Yeah I watched another short video about it and realized we didn’t do that! Oops. Hope it’ll be ok.
I love your farm.
Thanks! It’s sends you love back:)
Are you planning to plant apples?
We have two apple trees that we planted elsewhere on the land, but Jon just bought a couple more:)
still catching up, thanks................🥰
Thanks for being here:)
So glad to find your channel, lovely video and family
Thanks so much for watching and for your sweet comment:) All the best!
Looking good. The more swales the better. I sinking at much water a possible here in Queensland Australia 😊
I name 2025 the year of the Swales;)
Did you know that the cactus you are cutting looks like the edible cactus? I think it is what is called nopal in Mexico. I tried nopal sautéed with salt and pepper and I liked it.
Yes it is! We use the fruit each summer to make delicious popsicles:) Haven’t tried cooking the paddles yet but will try. Thanks:)
good 👍❤
Be mindful when planting trees on the swale mounds, dig planting holes deeper into solid soil. In Summer the new mounds will dry out very quickly and newly planted trees should never dry out in their first year or two to grow well.
Good point!
Hi, nice job! I love your cute dogs! Maybe check out "Dreams of Green" ( www.youtube.com/@dreamsofgreen ). She is in Australia and has excellent videos on propagating all kinds of trees and shrubs and also on how to establish them in a hot, very dry climate.
Drought-tolerant and heat-resistant pigeon peas are an easy-to-grow staple food, and they attract pollinators too. as well the moringa tree is food for humans and animals
Oooo I’ll look into pigeon peas:) Haven’t seen any moringa trees near us, but will keep our eyes open. Thanks for your suggestions!
@theyellowbootshomestead i live in spain and bought moringa ,
@ Oh cool:) I’ll def be on the lookout- moringa is a great tree and tea!
how far from monchique r u ?
We’re much more inland.
primeiro 🙂
Your trees are dying from Phytophthora, not lack of water (which doesn’t help of course) it is unfortunately an issue that out Azinheiras and Sobreiras are going through. The only known way to prevent so far is to plant marioila (phlomis purpurea) near the trees since its roots are antagonistic to the Phytophthora. Get some seeds , plant them in trays and then plant them near the trees! 😊 good luck with your project, lovely having people like you around ❤
The road looks like a good place to capture more runoff in the future. Good Luck
Agreed! Thanks:)
Cut the dead grass and fill up the swales to prevent erosion when the rain comes.
We’ve mulched half of the swales so far and it’s cool to see the difference! Thanks- great recommendation:)
I’m all for this project, but hearing an American accent, why did you move to Portugal for this? Edit: Husband(?) accent gave away the reason hehe, never mind!
Haha:) We lived near Geneva before this. We have a video all about why we chose Portugal if you’re interested to hear more:)
Love what you're doing :) and I like the way you are doing the swales. One suggestion - try using transparent tube (hose) filled with water for leveling. I used this method many times and it is very easy and precise. Also one idea for planning your contour swales is to use drone, make pictures and than photogrametry, than 3d model :) . I would love to help
Thanks so much:) Nice idea for the water filled tube- we don’t have clear tubes or a fine, but will keep it in mind! Thank you !
Yes, you said it right, EROSION. Why, what you done we call it child swale. Just dig deeper and wider. Make no mistake by adding dirt on it, it will erode easily. Dont make spillways in the middle, alternate it on both ends, so that in case of blow out, the water doesn't cascade straight out and cause multiple erosion. about your road, make a slope on both sides, or make a ditch on one side facing the hill, and put some diy culverts made of tubular plastic pipes or concrete.
Thanks so much! We will adjust:)
Idyllic lifestyle
Make some swells across the road. If you can put pipes in the ditch then cover with rocks. I think that would help.
It’s a road that we drive on so they wouldn’t withstand a car, but yes we definitely need to direct the water and pipes in a ditch would be a good idea too. Thanks!
Slowing water run off is such a solution to bio diversity around you! Easier to dig the ground when it is wet rather than cement like when dry!!
Definitely! Thanks for your comment:)
