A lyrical response to the life-and-times of one of folkmusic’s most totemic figures. Directed by Rob Curry & Tim Plester.
Southern Journey (Revisited): Stewart Lee socially-distanced Q&A
Sunday 4th October 2020 @ The Rio Cinema in Dalston, England. Filmmakers Rob Curry and Tim Plester recorded in conversation with comedian Stewart Lee, following a screening of their freewheeling music documentary meets road-movie SOUTHERN JOURNEY (REVISITED). The film was inspired by the legendary 1959 field-recordings made by Alan Lomax and Shirley Collins. Conversation (and subsequent Q&A) filmed from afar to adhere to social-distancing measures as then in place due to a rampant outbreak of human coronavirus.

Garm.
He's talking about Totem Records which was on Church Street in Stoke Newington which was a great shop - with some serious grading issues, mind. It was run by a guy who was fired from Reckless Records on Upper Street for having a 'fight' in the shop with a colleague - who was also fired - and happens to be a London record shop legend. No names mentioned.....
Flippin eck ! How have I missed this ? Marvellous x

Holy moly, he makes Laurence Fox sound good. Flatter than roadkill.
@badlydrawnsmiffy What are you, 13 or something? I don't have any songs. I'm no good at singing, and I'm aware of it....unlike flatface in the video.
@badlydrawnsmiffy I replied and gave an extremely witty retort. It's probably shadowbanned. Shame, because it was really funny. Not ironicly post-modern Stewart Lee funny (aka unfunny), but actually funny. I'm on probation with this account.
@badlydrawnsmiffy It's Friday night and you're looking at Stewart Lee videos and arguing (badly) with a bloke who made a comment 10 months ago. Seek help.
@@badlydrawnsmiffy I made several witty retorts. But it looks like they were sent down the RUclips censors' memory hole.
@badlydrawnsmiffy I fail to see how my lack of talent and inability to sing relates to judging your idiocy.
Does this insufferable prick have to ruin everything? Just do one!
Brilliant!
Blimey that bin bag being blown around in the wind has really let itself go
My god he has a voice and can sing, he should do it more.
Yes, he can sing. Like a deaf bored panda.
The jolly sailor lad has let himself go
could you please tell me where does the soundtrack comes from ?
Ossian Brown & Michael York, per Imdb.
Hi would it be okay to email you with some questions about the film?
No it wouldn't.
Stewart Lee should stick to pure comedy, he imagines too much from what are mostly soul free re write versions of Irish ballads - contrary to his assumptions (as he is ignorant of history) she is most pretentious, as she even keeps a straight face as she is enobled by the naive with that claim of no pretention and supposed purity! as for anonymity!! only if you're ignorant! Whether she actively knew or not, fact is she rips off a lot of ancient Irish ballads and airs. Likely ignorant of it after listening to her talk of 'white english slaves and indentured to America'! Pitiful if typical ignorance of history and of who were the main so called 'white slaves and supposed 'indentured' sent! To be fair to her, at the time the Irish were soon forced to lose their identity, so perversely even the poorest whites in america today imagine pride in their ancestors as supposed pure anglo saxon! Despite that claim not ever being generally credible even in England and despite the old folk culture of the including poitin brewing (moonshine) fiddle music & even Irish old style dance! No shock as that's history simple! Especially since the Hanoverians invented the british franchise for their own benefit- the modern rewrite of supposed history had the Irish all but written out. In a 100 years from now the british will be singing songs about Lidl and Aldi as if olde englishe
is that an electric guitar wailing behind oh that just took this song to a whole other place THANKYOU THANKOYOU THANKYOU!!

Did you make the film?
Beautiful. Such sad lyrics that parallel a 1908 Murder and film I'm working on that inspired Twin Peaks hazeldrew.com/. Researching how to license lyrics for Knoxville Girl and or this song or a performance of it. Any insights into who owns lyrics copyright would be very helpful.
beautiful

Where oh where can I see this in New Zealand. She is such an amazing woman. I have loved her music since first hearing her singing with Davey Graham on the album "Folk Roots, New Routes".
My favourite comedian. This man has been given too much talent.

Met them in person 5 years ago in Kentucky, and exchanged messages with them a few tines after that. (They are a Husband-Wife duo from Maine - Shanti & Buck I beleive). She talked about making mirrors crack by focusing on them or something like that. True story Good people.
Great song, based on a very old and anonymous ballad about Joseph refusing to pick cherries for Mary because he was having trouble believing she immaculately conceived. So he told her, "Have your Lord get you the cherries." So Baby Jesus commanded the tree to bow down and make it easier for Mary to have her druthers, berry-wise.
It was Yankee the squire As I've heard the men say Who rode out a 'huntin' on one Saturday They hunted all day but nothing they found But a poor murdered woman Laid on the cold ground About eight o'clock boys the dogs They throwed off On Leatherhead Common And that was the spot They tried all the bushes but nothing they found But a poor murdered woman Laid on the cold ground They mounted their horses And they rode off the ground They rode to the village And alarmed it all around It is late in the evening I'm sorry to say She cannot be removed until the next day The next Sunday morning about eight o'clock Some hundreds of people To the spot they did flock For to see the poor creature Your hearts would have bled Some cold-hearted violence Came into their heads She was took off the common And down to some inn And the man that has kept it His name is John Simms The coroner was sent for, the jury they pined And soon they concluded and settled their mind Her coffin was brought, in it she was laid And took to the churchyard This cold winter day No father, no mother, no long friend untold Came to see the poor creature Laid under the cold So now I'll conclude and I'll finish my song And those that have damage Shall find themselves wrong The last day of Judgement The trumpet shall sound And their souls not in heaven I'm afraid won't be found
Has everybody heard the studio version of this he recorded? It's phenomenal, I found it on Spotify.
Crystal Logic yeah I'm a big fan of Stew; one night recently I fell asleep listening to 41st Greatest Standup and woke sometime later and this was on. Trying to figure out how to play it now.
Giving it to us straight...
