Happy I found your channel man. Just setting up my own smithy now and am about to follow along with Black bear Forges first suggestion on making a bunch of hooks and leaves at first to work on skill work and hammer control. Thought about documenting my own journey of figuring this out too. I like how you have taken the time to describe your experience from your own beginners perspective too. Any advice on how someone would do a hook like this without a jig? Assuming I just get to stick with the horn until I can somehow make a jig like yours.
That’s awesome! It’s incredibly addictive. Without a jig you can definitely do exactly the same thing, it just takes a little more patience. I’d watch some videos on good scrolling techniques to help. I do have a video on that I’ll see if I can share. But just take your time and keep adjusting until you get it to look the way you want.
ruclips.net/user/shortsz84VeIH3peU?si=WhylwOWVE-CguIWH In this video you can see how I start the scroll and lift my tong hand up as I work the scroll towards myself. That will help keep it nice and even.

Hahaha Hank always knows what’s up.
Really helpful tip thanks!
I’m glad you found it helpful!
Is the vhain just for holding it steady? If so how heavy actually is it?
Yes it’s a sort of holdfast, it’s not super heavy, I welded two chains side by side so it holds a little bit flatter and has a bit more weight. But it’s a bit larger than a standard bike chain.
Hey, just found your channel. Nice work! Is that one of Brian’s keyed anvils or did you forge it out? I like the horn profile.
Thank you! This is one actually made by Andrew Larson. But it’s that same style. I love it.
Величайшее произведение Надо сдать в Эрмитах или в Лувр Но есть лучший способ на помойку ВЫКИНУТЬ
Nice pipe, what blend do you prefer?
I really like this Casey Jones Hero’s blend a lot. I’m not an expert on pipes at all though.
Я пересмотрел за последние 10 лет сотню видео о том как выковать крючок. Ваше - одно из самых лучших. Спасибо.
Thank you so much!
Great video, working on some rat tail knives and this helped a lot. What anvil are you using?
That’s great to hear! This is a mild steel keyed anvil that Andrew Larson made.
Nice clear video, well done 👍🏻
Thank you! I’m trying to get better at making decent videos and it’s harder than you’d think lol.
@@Bifrostforge22 oh i believe ya, it is hard haha. Im going to be making a multiple part series on restoring my Fairbanks power hammer in the next few months so ill be on the struggle bus with ya
Well that will be awesome and definitely worth documenting.
Thanks mate.
You're welcome!
Good video
I like this song, what is the name?

Great work man and neat set up
Thank you very much!
That's some anvil. Did you make it all or revise an existing one?
This is a keyed anvil made by Andrew Larson. The top part comes off and the base is a striking anvil. Very nice for all kinds of work.
Love your anvil mate.
These keyed anvils are so great. I got this one from Andrew Larson.
Girthy stock
Thiccccc
You should move camera so it is looking down on the face of the anvil when you start forging the flower. Also show the shape of the punches. Nice flower. Thanks.
Definitely a good idea. I’m planning on going back through and remaking a lot of my videos. Partly because of what you are describing and partly because my editing skills have improved lol.
I don’t get it. Pick your stock from something opposite of what you want to make? Maybe you like the challenge? What?
I like the asthetic of a forged down base, and it’s easier to forge it out than buying a giant chunk of 1/2” x 4” and having to manage that and cut it. It’s really not hard with a couple heats. A bigger hammer would do it easily in one heat.
Very beautiful piece.🙂👍👍👍
Thank you!
That is awesome, would love to see 👀 video on how to make! 👍
Well, I might have to do that. Not gonna lie, the first step is quite obviously phallic…lol. Like it’s uh, hard to mistake. So I was kinda hesitant to do a step by step 😂
Did you make those tongs?
These I did not make. They are a pair of Tom’s Tongs. I do like the feel quite a bit and have several pairs.
Strong hits. Youre really moving the material. How heavy is the hammer?
4.5 lbs.
This is painful to watch.
I agree. This was probably one of the first ones I made and uh it’s clumsy. Lol
Keep practicing!!! That’s the only way 😅😅😅
Now heat treat, sharpen the wings. 😊
Haha the ol spicy butterfly
Good work.
Thanks!
Now I don’t know nothing from nothing about blacksmithing. But. Don’t that anvil rock a bit much?
So this is a 225# anvil and I just have it secured to a stump so I can move it in the shop. Ideally I’d have it bolted to the floor and have almost zero energy loss. But I have to find a happy medium between ideal energy loss and shop functionality.
@Bifrostforge22 I made a steel anvil stand it's sitting close to the gas forge n coal forge. Everything esle 9:08 is on wheels other the the anvil n thee power hammer . I put the forge of choice in the middle. Sometimes I use both on the same item.. instead of takin the time to adjust the power hammer.. Sometimes I don't think it's easier tho !! Hahaha
@@bbqhoncho2720 yeah I now have a lot of things on wheels to move around easier. Sometimes it’s nice and sometimes it’s just shuffling things into my own way lol.
👏👍
nice, hell of a shop you built.
Oh thanks man! My brother-in-law actually had a huge hand in making it look so nice. He finished the walls and added lights and a ton of other stuff as a Christmas present.
Ain't gonna lie... I thought that read bottle opener and thought... That's gonna be a big bottle opener!
Haha that would be a giant one!
That's pretty neat.
Dude, where did you get your keyed in anvil? Andrew larson?
Yessir!
90 degrees would be impossible with an equilateral triangle. You can only turn it in increments of 120 degrees. :P
You are absolutely correct. I apologize, I am a moron.
Hi uncle Josiah it is me julia😊
Hi! Lol
Pretty cool.
Oi can't hear what you're saying.
Yeah I’m not really saying anything about the work lol
get you metal hot!
Very cool. I love that.
Nice
What will this be used for?
