The Substance (2024) Reaction (Demi Moore's BEST Performance) (Request)
Hey Guys! This is one of the wildest and craziest horror movies I've ever seen. But put that aside for a moment; It's also just a good movie on top of that. Put the two together, and you really have a winner. Best performance I've ever seen from Demi Moore. And also fantastic job from Margaret Qualley as well as a smaller but great role for Dennis Quaid.

Hey All! This was a pretty enjoyable horror movie! The creature in this film did not turn out to be what I expected at all. Hey All! We're back with another gorefest, and this time I'm going into this one having met the real Art the Clown, Mr. David Howard Thornton himself! So, with the first movie I'll be straight-up honest. It was just okay. I rated it a 5/10. This sequel was an improvement over the first for sure. Although, the main strength in this series is the unbelievably large amounts of gore and violence. E...

Hey All! I had my friend Luis sit in on this one since I've seen this in the theater. Hey Guys! This was a super ambitious horror movie. At times I got lost in the logic, but have no doubt, this was a good movie. I find myself drawn to it for some reason. Awesome reaction! A bit of explanation for the snake, its a snake Yokai / spirit called Nure-Onna. It was purposely placed inside the big coffin to complete the 5 elements, so the whole grave is stable. We got Earth (soil), Wood (coffin), Metal (armor), Fire (samurai spirit), and Snake (Water).

If I remember correctly, the area where they filmed the final capture of the team was the same general area where they filmed Predator a few years earlier in Mexico. Donald McAlpine was the cinematographer on both movies. I think it was him who (in the commentary to this here) expressed shock that the piece of jungle from Predator had just disappeared within less than ten years.

Oh you served the Air Force? Back in the early 2000s I met a lot of you guys and from the 1st Inf Div, they all were deployed here in Schweinfurt Germany! We had some good times here, and we even talked about the novel by Erich Maria Remarque - All Quiet on the Western Front, cause Cpl Eugene Stoner from Texas, he just came from the NCO leaders school, he had to do an exam on it. I have no idea if he made it back home, I never met him again. Maybe someone knows him, his last deployment was 1st Inf Div in Germany, on the way to Afghanistan. That was 2006-7

The realities of German movie production at this time meant that the movie needed to be co-produced by German (and European) TV stations, with a special version prepared for TV distribution. Originally there was a theatrical movie version running ~150 mins (2.5 hours) (that the book's author, Lothar Günther Buchheim, was very unhappy with, in his opinion showing too much unprofessional behavior of the sailors). Then there was a TV series version running almost five hours long (first shown in 3 parts ~100 min, later in six parts of ~50 min.) Buchheim was much happier with this version. Years later, director Wolfgang Petersen put together the Director's Cut you saw, running ~210 min (3.5 hours). It's completely re-edited from all the available footage (there is some large chunk Petersen wanted to have, but couldn't put in, as the sound was damaged beyond repair, and they couldn't re-do it nicely enough. One of the major selling points of the DC was a 5.1 surround mix, and the only reason the DC is not running longer was that it would have been too expensive to convert many sequences to 5.1 which were not retained in a master easily convertible. The TV version was mono, and many of the scenes unique to the TV version only had this mono mix archived, not the original raw recordings needed for a 5.1 re-mix.) All versions got various transfers to English language. General consensus is to stick with original German audio and English subtitles. The original version had most of the English language done by the German cast themselves, but with significant content changes. There was a British dub of the TV version which was closer to the original meaning, but with many parts spoken by British voice actors. The dub for the DC is probably the best, again mostly done by the original German cast members themselves, but If I recall correctly all the audio versions were forced to change profanity and figures of speech significantly, while most of the subtitles were done closer to the original because they could, not being restricted by mouth movements and such. I have not seen all of the versions, but got glimpses of all versions here and there, and I seem to recall that the British subtitles of the TV version are probably closest to the original German meaning.

The abandonment of the enemy sailors was the movie's comment on the "Laconia incident". A German U-boat torpedoed the RMS Laconia, a converted passenger ship carrying soldiers and POWs. The U-boat's captain decided to rescue the survivors, marked his boat with red crosses and radioed that they operated as rescuers. However, both his sub and one other also joining the rescue operation were attacked by Allied forces. As a reaction, German high command issued a standing order for submarines to not participate in any such operations and instead do total submarine warfare, specifically contradicting seafarer's code of honor. The latter is also the conflict of the Captain in the movie in the situation. The honorable sailor in him wants to rescue, but supply situation and orders don't allow him to. The other incident the scene references is the sinking of the Greek freighter Peleus. It was torpedoed by a German sub, and left a big debris field (much like what we see here), which would give away the sub's position and attract counter attacks. The captain decided to take the debris field under fire with hand grenades and machine guns, which also means killing surviving sailors. It's not entirely clear of the captain was just interested in clearing the debris field or actively tried to kill the survivors, but nevertheless he and the other officers were put on trial for war crimes, the captain and two other officers sentenced to death, others to prison time. It was the only time Nazi U-boat personnel were sentenced for war crimes. As far as I recall, there was a long standing myth purported in Allied countries that German Nazi U-boat crews were monsters killing and shooting survivors based on this one and only incident where something like this happened

The "man overboard" scene wasn't scripted. One of the actors slipped, and the others stayed in character and reacted to protocol. (They had someone being wounded in the script, and they switched characters around to accommodate the accident.)

One of the major shipyards building the U-Boats was Mayer in the city of Papenburg. They still exist, nowadays building some of the largest cruise ships. They still had the plans for the U-Boats in their archives, and the set was build using those original plans.

The photographer, Jost Vacano, developed an extra small 35mm camera together with the camera manufacturer Arri to get all these shots in the cramped space. Only problem was that the camera ran very loud, being stripped of all the casing and dampeners, so they had to ADR all the dialog.

On your observation of them not having to take a tangent like this or a side-road... this episode becomes even more impressive on that front when you realize that they actually DID "have to" do the backstory in Episode 1. It's absolutely iconic from the game. And if fact, the fact that they NAILED that opening was pretty massive! This departure was genius on so many levels. My favorite, though, is that it demonstrates, after two episodes of bleakness, what "something to actually live FOR" looks like. I mean... why fight so hard to stay alive? Just to not be dead? That seems... uninspiring. Sounds horrible. No. You SHOULD be fighting to stay alive in order to LIVE. Y'know... A LIFE.

BTW from 40.000 german U-boat men only 10.000 every returned in WW.2. And for a second: As war went on a increasing part of the soldiers on german side in 2.WW starts to reject the Nazi party and their murderous actions and senseless ways of sacrificing them for only propaganda. But it was very dangerous to show this, it was even forbidden to make jokes up on the Nazileaders and their failures. For this you get into a Concentrationcamp or ends up being tortured or shot. The Nazi reign has been as brutal against its own population, as Stalin was against the russian population. And for the last. Seamen of all the world are a big family, they share so many. So of course the captain is upset, that there are still people on board,….and, that he has the order („Laconia-Order“by Hitler) not to help them, s that they have to day. This was for every seaman a tragedy. One guy cries in this scene, and the others felt really sick, of what they have to do. Of course, they were enemies but deeper than this they all has been seamen. Like pilots, different sides but part of one bigger family. Not easy to describe this.

Whereas this film, since my first viewing it left a mark and I've rewatched it several times. It's so much more profound; the story, its' ideas, the characters. Truly an underrated gem.

I believe the plane was a McDonald Douglas DC-3. Oh btw I think your wrong about the dialog, it is the way people communicate. I mean conversations usually involved people talking on top of each other not waiting for one person to finish before they say their line. This type of dialog is typical of Howard Hawks films. This film is considered a classic just like "The Day The Earth Stood Still" both released in 1951.

A lot of people have been unnecessarily confused by the "single consciousness" angle. Simply think of THE SUBSTANCE as a horrific feminist version of DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE. Jekyll and Hyde have radically different personalities, but they share the same consciousness, in the same body (instead of two separate bodies). In the same way that Jekyll was taken over & destroyed by Hyde (who represents Jekyll's unfettered dark side), Elisabeth is "consumed" and destroyed by Sue, who represents Elisabeth's intense, unfettered self-hatred.
