Also about bucktail, I didn't know about the difference in " flairing " for (roughly) the first years of tying with it. Today the information is a lot easier to find. And I guess that makes me old!😂😂😂
Read, Lords of the Fly, about Tarpon fishing in a setting where there was too little concern for the fishery among fisherman with their egos out of control.
My wife grew up in Annapolis, MD. and we spent a year there in 1987-88. The striped bass fishery has not been given the appreciation it deserves. I'd love to visit the east coast and spend money to catch and release fly fish for striped bass and bluefish. I hate the idea that these wonderful fish are not being protected as they should be.
Thanks for sharing your passion for protecting these fish! Come fish with us one of these days!
Thanks ! I needed a reminder that the snow and cold will pass. I look forward to your videos.
Thank you, and see you on the Zooms!
RIP Candyman
We miss you Mr. Popovics. You continue to be such an inspiration! What a legend!
Nice job the haul I use more to pickup the line and add speed to the cast I'm not aware if use on forward cast . Working for me when I'm changing direction I think I use hauling then
I have a question about how he is casting all his fly line without breaking his rod I don’t know if it’s just cause I’m using “budget” rods or if I’m doing something wrong I’ve broken the same 150 usd fly rod twice the first time I thought it was just a faulty rod blank but it broke again in the same spot the day after I trade in my first rod
Take up golf, bet you can bomb it, lol My Sage rods work well for getting 80/90 foot casts, fun game
Great video
Fantastic video as always. These are priceless.
These videos are treasures. Really fantastic.
🎉 Promo`SM
Quite an interesting set of background stories. A PDF of the tying instructions was mentioned near the end of the video. I don't see a link to this. Can you put it up please.
Wow, so knowledgeable
Great job catching up with Andy. He has done a really good job capturing the stories of some of the greats in the salt water fishery. But this was a well done opportunity to get him to fill in some of his own details. Nice work guys
Please post the Ben Whaley video!!!
Anybody knows what rod is Mark using in this video?
Looks like Hardy Zephrus
@@michaelbakewell7547 thanks, I magnified the video and it says Temple Fork Outfitters, however I can't tell what model it is.
TFO Mini Mag 300-400 grain 8’ 3 piece rod.
I think this is actually a natural way to cast. I am self though, other then a fly casting book i picked up when i was very young, but could barely read English back then, so it was mainly pictures. Somewhere along the way this unloading with the wrist just started happening and it felt right. I think the environment were i practiced at actually forced me to do it unconciously. Since the first time i tried to cast the rod in puerto rico, always had very strong head winds. So i had to make tight loops and get as much line speed as i could or it wasn’t happening. That also helped me on my back cast. I was sure that once i trew that loop behind me, it wasn’t going to fall on the ground, so i could take my time before the forward cast. I find this to be an issue when i teach other people. They can’t see the back loop, so they rush and don’t let it unroll because they fear its going to drop.
Agreed, CTaylor...FIRE ties.
These bozo's are all the same. Harping constantly about the evil man destroying the planet. This moron reminds me of the crazy dude who hung out at the old cottonwood camp on the bighorn. He would come in the fly shop in the morning and complain about the caddis fly's were going extinct. Don't worry folks the caddis are fine and so are the fish.
This is so cool, cant wait to get this dialed in!
Great explanation of his technique...love that he is casting a TFO rod!
do you know what particular TFO rod is he using?
It is a TFO Mini Mag 300-400 grain. 8’ 3 piece rod.
Ah, he doesn't know what he's doing! Just joking. I had the pleasure of watching him tie the Slammer with Yak hair quite a while ago at the Fly Fishing Show in NJ. Always a pleasure when he shares his knowledge. Thank you for this most excellent vid.
You guys may want to watch your own videos, especially the slomo sections. When Mark sais to load the rod (translation), it has almost no bend at all. Then when he sais to unload it (rotation) bend increases to it's max. What he sais does not nearly match what the video shows. Rotation bends the rod, not translation. Cheers B
you been fooled, camera angle lol
Best method...especially for salt anglers.
Please do support the letter referred to in support of the striped bass fishery.
Thanks for doing this video. I met Mark at a casting workshop on a Saturday in Rhode Island many years ago. He suggested I add drift into my cast. He also had me try casting his rod with a Sedotti Slammer tied on. It was a lot of fun and I it raised the bar for what I thought of as good casting.
Thanks for joining us Philip. We really enjoyed putting it together. Mark is a Jedi knight!!
I worked on slowing down and applying the power later in my stroke. I can already see improvement. Thanks to all you guys. I am extremely grateful for the help.
August - thank you for your willingness to share your casting video. You’re already an excellent caster, and we hope this helps take you to an even higher level. Tight loops!
Not only sculpin but juvenile craw and id say it even go fiddler crab
Been a fan of Brita's tying for a long while now. very much appreciate seeing her style and techniques 🙏🤘
I really like this ADD chatty McRandomFace guy! Really speaks my language! I do not fish pike, musky, or bass (because I dont have them where I live) but I do fish browns, rainbows, and carp. This fly is DISGUSTING in smaller builds. I've tied it with moose hair, and elk mane and it rocks!
Why not use white or neutral GSP? its basically clear.
cool video & info
Thanks ant!
Best session yet!
Thank you for watching! Gunnar is such a Jedi master. We keep watching this over and over lol!
South Florida fly fisher headed for LI in July and looking forward to some fishing there. I've never fished saltwater outside of Florida, so it should be interesting. I plan to tie up some of those flies you used here. Also, I was told by a casting instructor that his reason for reeling with his casting hand is so the line cannot get caught on the reel handle when released after hauling.
Cool Michael! Lets us know when you come our way, happy to help with any advice and maybe even meet up in person!
Great fly!
What a phenomenal breakdown! Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks benny! our pleasure. He is such a zen master! Hope you can join us Sunday, April 30 at 8PM Eastern for the live clinic!! Register on our website.
Sure this is OK for single fly but it causes closed loops…..so multiple flies will tangle?
Good Q Mike. I really don't think so. the loops are actually less tight than typical, and you can control them better, so I think it would work fine with more than one hook, but I'll ask Mark.
These guys can’t land a fish to save their life
Haha! You try it!!
Wow once again power house show guys!!!!! Made my day thanks again
Thank you! It's our pleasure to showcase these amazing talents!!
Thank you for another great & informative show! Jonny did a great job interviewing Brita. I don't know if anyone knows this but I am fan of Sage Fly Rods but that's not important. What I wanna know is what is Brita's discount from Sage when purchasing a rod. 😛
LOL!
Amazing guy & amazing career - love the 16 foot brotherhood thing
What a great informational tying session. Thank you for sharing this knowledge!
Thanks Evan!!
going in 2 weeks, first time for tarpon on the fly. Stoked!
How'd it go, Jeff??
@@mastersofthefly2930 tough, tarpon are different! Pretty slim pickings first several days, 1 or 2 for all day effort. Fortunately hit this mangrove lagoon last 2 hours of my last day...got 12-15! Good way to end.
Excellent- thanks for posting this great content
Our pleasure, Gerald. Glad you enjoyed it!
Hehe well we cheated a bit - shot from two boats. The first is a Seavee 290b that we got up in the skinny. The flats skiff is an East Cape Evo. Both great boats!!!
Great vid. First time seeing that type of boat. Like a flats combo for long range or???
And we’re those Raul’s guys ?
Yes! They are great!!
Headed there is April what rod did you guys generally run in the tight mangroves great video
Hey Shan. We mostly used 8 and 9-weight rods. I brought a 10 but didn't use it. The best rod was David's 8' 9 wt. Hardy, which was awesome for punching casts into the Mangrove tunnels :). And yes, those are all Raul's guys. You can follow him on IG @tarpontown for more info! Sounds like you're already booked, but otherwise, you can book through David: northflats.com
@@mastersofthefly2930 I also used a 8wt hardy. great rod.
Looks like a lot of fun
