Draco tavern. Great read. Also like the 4 book Dream Park series.

I've been looking for a good military scifi series, hope you review more of this genre.

It's a shame the story is mediocre, the artwork is so good. But when you copy LotR I'm not surprised 🤭

Great review! I wish Doug Moench could have told a more original story. I tried to find this at my local comic book shop, but all they had was the strangely similar DC Weird Worlds, based off of Edgar Rice Burroughs tales. I really like your crusader knight figure - I hope to find one for myself.

Thanks again for showcasing this series. The art is certainly intriguing, so I'll see about picking it up. As far as being derivative of Lord of the Rings, I'd say the majority of popular fantasy from the late 1970s up until recently has been copying Tolkien's homework.

I have seen the authors name in the science fiction fantasy section of my library and noted quotes from her on some of the military science fiction I have read. I might have to remember her when I have the time to read and am in the mood for sci-fi.

Bujold really is good at everything - plot, character, prose, dialogue, pace, etc. She's a master of the craft.

I had to stop viewing the video, because I plan to re-read this series now 30 or 40 years later. Everything LOIS McMaster BUJOLD writes is top-notch. But, I'll check out your channel, just based on this book choise!

Orphans of the Sky was one of my later acquisitions but it is one of my favorite Heinlein books.

I picked up some 1940's paperback Heinlein's at an antique store and put them in bags. I found a pile of the Conan Frazetta cover paperbacks at a small book store in a town close to where i live.

Looking forward to the Conan collection and REH discussion. Conan: The Road of Kings (Karl EW) is very good so far (only half-way through it).

I wish they would adapt this series for film or television already! btw I discovered a new series recently which I think you and Secret Fire would really dig. It's called the Forgotten Ruin series. I'll say no more, check out the synopsis and tell me you're not intrigued... :)

De Camps stories were more slickly written than Howard's but lacking in atmosphere to a degree. In my humble and limited opinion

I think they understand the character/universe well enough, and the info texts at the end of each issue shows that they do a lot of research!

Hi Grammaticus. That Dell copy is a real gem! When I was collecting the Dell 10 cent books back in the 80s, I think that one was quite expensive. If I'm not mistaken that one may be the last item in the set. (no, I never did complete that series although I do have Universe). I look forward to more videos as your channel is one of my favorites.

The franchise shouldn't be restricted to just military veterans, but military combat veterans. They will always vote against war unless when it's absolutely necessary. If we go several generations without any combat veterans able to vote then that's a win!

I recall reading the De Camp Conan books back when they were published, I don't recall any specifics of the Hyborian saga other than it involved evolution and devolution of the various races as the lands changed. I look forward to your videos on that subject.

Just when you think you got out, they keep pulling you back in! Also, looking forward to the REH's use of race in his stories. As a person who studied racism in university, it is fascinating how he uses race for both good and bad. You're doing great work sir.

Grammaticus, you never disappoint. :) I've read the entire series, but it took a couple attempts. While I've always loved the first book, the narration and actors in the second book put me off; it's quite different from the first book. I stopped reading the series at that point until a year or two ago, when I decided to take another stab at it. And I'm glad I did: It's one hell of a roller coaster, with characters you love dying, and those you hate surviving, all in one of the darkest universes I've read. But the final book pulls it all together, and for me made the read totally worth it. Unforgettable series. By the way, as an aside, I'm a Marine vet, and I can honestly my favorite people in the world outside of the Corps were our navy corpsmen. It's completely voluntary service-they don't have to attach to Marine infantry units. But they do and they take great care of us and I'll never forget that. Thanks for the great review, hope you enjoy the rest of the series!

People have been telling me I nead to read this for years. I guess I should.

I love the Black Company books, but my favorite Glen Cook of all are The Dread Empire Books., starting with A Shadow of All Night Falling. This is straight-up the BEST world building since Tolkien. I am serious. Also, whew, I have never seen magic anywhere in fiction more powerful than some of the magic you see and hear of in the Dread Empire books. Less than fun fact: the story is that some fan/friend literally stole Cooks treatment in manuscript for a follow-up after Reap the East Wind. He did eventually do some, but according to Cook a lot was lost to this unbelievable thief-jerk.

I devoured the first trilogy when I was young. Then the Silver Spike scared the snot out of me. 😮😳😱. Time to reread the first trilogy again, then the rest of the series. ❤😉

I've only read the first book so far and I liked it more than most modern fantasy. But I don't plan on reading all eleven books. I'll probably only finish the first trilogy.

Loved this series. Croaker is such a great protagonist. The wizards great fun. has the most satisfying ending I've ever read. Grim dark done right.

I actually read the first few books in the over the top 70s (which description I love, btw) and they have been firm favourites since then. I think I've read everything Zelazny's ever written and even after so many years I give them a re-read.

I first tried reading The Black Company a few years ago, and didn't think much of it. It seemed like an account of someone's D&D campaign given a gloss of Vietnam war films. I gave it another go a bit later, however, and something just 'clicked' and I really enjoyed it. Soulcatcher is a particularly memorable character.
