Dungeons & Dragons. Real life vs. VTT (Virtual Table Top)
Running D&D using a VTT (Virtual Table Top) instead of at the table with friends

DM skills: coming up with ideas on the fly (pt3)

Making decisions on the fly when the players decide to go ‘off script’ can be a common problem for many DM’s A lot of this comes down to just diving into practicing certain skills during the game and reviewing your preparation habits

AD&D vs 5e : Rules complexity (pt2)

Another thought on speed factor and comparing OLD and NEW D&D rules functionality “Yes but that rule is also in 5e” Here is why that’s a problem

D&D Wizards : Early vs New (pt 2)

‘Early D&D wizards were unbalanced and their low hit points and spell limits made them shitty to play New D&D wizards are balanced and useful at first level and that makes them better’ I disagree

Creating high quality weapons for Old School Essentials or BX D&D

As a DM, How I very simply implement high quality or crafted weapons into the game world while differentiating them between normal and magical weapons, without making either redundant
Random Encounter Tables: How I quickly build a table to suit a specific location

I’ve tried the traditional styles and made many of my own. Now I just use a table for a specific location with 6 slots Here is how I make it work
Why does tracking turns and random encounters matter in Basic D&D and Old School Essentials?

Old School D&D. Is it just nostalgia?

I'm going to have to buckle down and try my hand at vtt gaming if I ever want to play regularly again.
It’s rewarding mate. VTT games are better than no games at all imo
As a DM I operated under the military adage that "No plan survives first contact with the enemy." I learned early on to sketch out the raw bones. Start-Events-Preferred Outcome. Expect the unexpected and roll with the punches. But my one immutable rule was always "I am the DM, this is my world, and as such my word is final" I was running the game/scenario/campaign to have fun and provide a good experience for my players. I'd encountered my share of Rules Lawyers. (I swear, the young ones are THE WORSE) But when the game was over, did everyone have a good time? That was ALL I wanted.
Iiss the hours of pouring over spell compendiums like I was an actual wizard studying. Now it's the same regurgitated spells like fireball instead of something like "age to dust"
What I enjoyed in AD&D 1E was playing the game. The guys I played with were getting together to have fun. None of us had the "must defeat everything immediately and win over all obstacles" mentality. Hell, before the gaming started we set up the snack bar, the sandwich bar, and the drinks bar. We're talking 6-8 hour games. It was time to reconnect with each other, swap stories, and decompress from the "real world". Nothing like that exists in any online game. And like you said about the mechanics of it all, I want to have a good time, not spend half of the campaign arguing semantics and variables of overly complex rules. I've walked away from games like that. I'd give about anything to find players like that today.
To be honest, I am not familiar with "modern" D&D. My first D&D set of books were in a white box, with paperback books (and the horrible drawings) and a set of cheap, ugly dice. I also purchased all of the additional books that were out. I accessory manual to D$D and a copy of Chailmail. I stopped playing right before the updated version came out to replace AD&D. I know what you mean about playing Magic Users. Early low-level parties could expect the MU to be glued right behind the Cleric to be closer to Healing spells. And I have to admit, I had never thought of the MU being unbalanced. The disparagy even crossed over to Tunnels and Trolls, Elric, and most of the other early RPGs trying to become the next new thing. It saddens me to find out that MUs are so over the top now. I'm betting I wouldn't even recognise the game anymore. I gotta confess, I really miss playing. Oh well. I guess that teached ME to live this long, eh?
I completely agree with the notion that 5th is filled with too many little things to keep adding time to everyone's turn. I remember when you could have your turn calculated out using the movement factor system. It allowed you to know exactly how far you can move while still have x number of attacks, based on the effort used for the weapon, and being a martial class meant something g more than high HP.
Great advice!
Cheers mate. Just a thought dump
Early DnD required as you say more awareness and patience to play. (I only played upto 2nd edition before other interests and life gave me no time to play) There is so much content now and for want of a better word more legislation that less imagination and lateral thinking is needed, or expected. People seem to forget that the Rules are guidelines agreed upon and lore also. But the buck stops with the DM/GM. I dislike the idea that nowadays you could be playing making decisions then someone pipes up and states there is a rule for that. Its seems that back in the Day the DM and Players handbook were adequate. with a healthy splash of Monster manual.
Hay great quality of your content is so good but your channel views and subscribers are not increasing accordingly. I found some of your channel issues. Your channel's videos are not SEO optimized The keyword section of your videos is not properly customized. Video related keywords are not used in your description box. No link building has been done behind your video Your video has not been promoted on any social media for organic growth. The most important thing is that your channel is not monetized If you want I will help you to solve those problems in your channel and also help you to get your potential subscribers and views from your targeted location
I need versions of the 2e books, that have THOSE covers, BUT the internal layout of the black covered re-do's XD
"They respect their customers" - "Everything is intentional" - These two simple lines are the reasons I love the OSE line of products. So much thought goes into the layout, design, and quality. A truly great series.
I'm finishing up a 3 year AD&D 2e campaign before starting a 5e campaign. We pretty much just use what we like from all the editions. Good video.
18/00 str + weapon specialization was op.
OP? I don’t see how. It was incredibly hard to aquire. Not only did you need an 18 in str but you needed to roll a further 100 on percentile
I am looking fondly upon my book case that contains a great number of the AD&D 2E books that I spent several years gathering. I agree that it is the best version of the game but at the same time I also feel that BECMI (Rules Cyclopedia) is very close behind it if not tied with AD&D 2E.
Me too
2nd Edition was my introduction to Dungeons and Dragons as well, and I still have all my core books. The art was gorgeous, something later editions have not been able to capture. The biggest issue I personally have with this edition was the massive amount of tables that needed to be referenced. I found this would significantly slow gameplay (especially as a DM), and I do appreciate that later editions helped streamline referential data.
Greatest edition ever!
2E being the best?? 2E didn't have monks. Nuff said.
That’s why it was the best
yep also played basic for a bit too, loved2nd ed way more than 1st, quite liked the skills and powers rule set they did
AD&D 2nd Edition is where I got my start. Still play it to the day
I mixed them too. ❤️
Best edition ever! 5 edition sucks. 5 edition is a copycat of advanced d&d...
1e art was much better than 2e; especially the MM. 1e MM was all black ink drawings, but still superior quality of 2e MM in full color.
It’s a personal taste things I guess. That 1e MM art was pretty sweet though
There's a lot of gorgeous art by the likes of Larry Elmore in the 2e PHB, but it sadly doesn't illustrate useful things like weapons and armor like later editions.
Larry Elmore is one of the best5 artists of all time, and he is a cool guy. He spent so many hours talking with a Twitch artist on the CaveGeekArt Twitch stream, twice and is saved in the VoD's!
His best stuff was in BECMI I reckon
26:50 Ouch! 😱That page getting ripped hurt me. When I think of my old books, the thought of something happening to them stresses me out. Yeah, I know you can get copies from print-on-demand sites or Amazon/Ebay these days, but its not the same. Just touching one of my old books takes me back to when I first got it all those years ago. It's like traveling back in time to a better era of life. 📚
Getting new players in requires Ebay. Can't buy new books any more. I'm thankful for the option. I've got many originals though and I'm reverent to them.
Creating your own class was nice but as you say xp lvling impractical.
Combination of 1st and 2nd are the best, after that it just got bloated with micro managing money making filler.
Will you do more 2nd ed videos? It doesn't get enough love in my opinion but I like it. God I'm getting Planescape flashbacks just thinking about it. 😊
Id love to but I really just do these videos when I’m inspired. Thanks
Great into, Lee😂 I started with 1e in about 1986 then played 2e fir about 4 or 5 years. Well laid out - solid core rules.
Man, those books look gorgeous, great condition! I also mainly played 2nd ed. AD&D back in the 90s. TSR went hard on marketing and producing books back then (one of several things that ran the company into the ground).
80s BECMI Basic D&D kid here - we mixed 1e a lot in. Great stuff.
0 level characters is where my screen name comes from. Bought 2nd Ed. books with my paper route money. Still my favorite edition.
Nice. I'd forgotten how good the art and layout was in the 2E books
The layout was the true reason is was so great
The art in 1e was much better. 2e targeted a younger audience.
I’m, a nice guy, Lee! Send me one!
Ha tricky 😉
The version you have is the newest one - Gavin changed the initial encounter to make it less jarring.
Which one? Hole on the Oak or Winters Daughter?
@@leeosgamer74 Either! I have the PDFs but not hard copies - am currently running Hole in the Oak (the layout appears to have been improved by the addition of local area maps in each 3-page spread).
In the old winter's daughter version, some cultists are sacrificing a willing female victim on the stone outside. It's fairly harsh, but also kind of distracting from anything going on with the story. Norman rewrote it into the twitchy deer corpse.
Apologies if I assumed the identity of Mish Scott Correct me if I’m wrong
Nice haul! I haven't checked out Dolmenwood but I have the Advanced OSE books. 🏹⚔🧙🦄🎃🔥
The bookplate was just an extra thing for us deity backers. Traditional a part of the inside of the cover. That is occupied by the tables. So a loose sheet is the next best thing. The signature is by Gavin Norman.
Keep bringing the crappy videos! Ha! So that some people don’t think I’m a troll, I’m just following up a comment Lee made on FB. This looks like a cool set. Sorry I missed the KS. I just ordered from the restock.
Nice one, man. Thanks for putting it up.
Good unboxing (?) I am still waiting for mine to arrive
I had a playback error right after packing peanuts comment. Will try again.
But it watches fine on twitter.
BTW, for copyright reasons a few monsters (eg Beholder, Displacer Beast, etc) had to be renamed.
Nice! I'm hoping the next printing is released on time (supposedly later this month). Looks great! I'm 52 and started playing back in the late 70s, too. So for me, 5e can go piss up a rope!😂😁 I'm all old-school all the way.😎🧙
D&D 5e "Very hard to die", so true. No risk, no fun.
The Displacer Beast was NOT originally called a Warp Beast in B/X. It was one of the handful of monster names kept as a trademark and not released in the OGL, so OGL games like this put it in with a different name.
Ordered mine this week. Got the 2nd printing. They were out of the Advanced Fantasy Genre books. Looking forward to the new Advanced Fantasy compilation coming out soon
What a fantastic production those books are. Myself, I am waiting for the 2nd printing of the boxed set. Pretty excited. Thanks for posting. ~Fritz
The limited collector cover with the basilisk is definitely the best from 1st printing. The silver foil does make you wary to handle it too much though, which is why I also got the other limited edition cover. Excellent books.
Meanwhile I'm in the US and still waiting for my order from Exalted Funeral placed back in March.....
Watching over this .. I did note that I got a couple of facts wrong regarding differences with B/X and AD&D Points if you know what they are
Too many to list
