    First play: Question that has to be asked of the official is did he try to throw him at the bench? If so, he's gone for flagrant. Definitely the 15. Second play: And I've got ANOTHER late hit there. And the question I have on that one, that looks to be two consecutive plays too. Third: Good no-call, but given what has apparently already gone on in the game... Fourth: Definite DB UC 72 Purple. Could be more than that.

    Brian I have a correction towards your first intentional grounding video/example. Rule 7-5-2 exception: 2C states, the passer is the only player to possess the ball after the snap ends is the only player who can intentional throw into an area not occupied by an eligible receiver. I believe the video illustrated a double handoff which make it illegal for grounding.

    • @WPIALFootballOfficials
      @WPIALFootballOfficials Год назад

      You state the rule correctly however we cannot penalize a passer for starting his motion then getting hit and the ball going in a place which isn’t in his control. We have to judge the entire action not just where the ball ends up.

    Brian, I don't usually say much on these, but on your IDP at 11:34, the lineman are on the 30 when the pass is released. If I am seeing this correctly, the LOS is the 31. @@briandow2974 I actually noticed that watching it back as well (our crews game). Hard call because the ball goes past the line of scrimmage and typically those middle screens are designed to send OL to second level and catch the ball behind LOS. So when the RB and the ball go beyond LOS it’s natural to think Ineligible Downfield. Tough call but definitely a great one to review with the crew.

    I don’t see how you arrived at a no call on the first aiding the runner clip. (-24 min. Mark) it appears that #8 clearly puts both hands on the back of the QB and begins to push. Seems text book aiding. What am I missing?

    • @alexchavez3383
      @alexchavez3383 Год назад

      I agree with you, by the book this would seem like a penalty. If they were just pushing the pile and maybe made inadvertent contact with the ball carrier, that'd be fine. The narrator seems to think if there's any contact with anyone else besides the ball-carrier, that allows it, which seems on the wrong end of the expectation spectrum.

      He is making a play but he uses his hand as leverage on the WR shoulder not allowing the WR to jump. That’s how I see it. The film isn’t the best so I can also understand your point of view.

  • @briandow2974
    @briandow2974 Год назад

    At 20:10 in the film, the deep wing has to be focused on the tackle, sideline, and potential fumble. The opposite deep wing or the near LOS should pick up this BSB. I do not think the near deep wing can be expected to get a BSB and miss a potential fumble. It should be a foul but others need to see it.

    • @WPIALFootballOfficials
      @WPIALFootballOfficials Год назад

      If the deep wing is further back he/she can see the tackle and the block. That is why I mentioned about not being so close to the action.

    Great stuff, really appreciate the extensive breakdown! For the potential BSB 20:50, a way I like to think of it is: the blocker's arms are like the suspension on an old car. If the car bottoms out going over a bump, sure the suspension might have been engaged, but the force was transferred directly from the body of the car (helmet/shoulder of the blocker) to the ground (player being blocked). If the suspension gives, but takes most of the force of the bump, we're fine, no harm done.

    Thank you so much for posting these each week and each year! I am a newer official who has learned a bunch from your videos! I have a question about the blindside block @20:44. The definition of a blindside block established by the committee is “a block against an opponent other than the runner, who does not see the blocker approaching,” and now results in a 15-yard penalty. The committee also states that the blindside block “involves contact by a blocker against an opponent who, because of physical positioning and focus of concentration, is vulnerable to injury. Unless initiated with open hands, it is a foul for excessive and unnecessary contact when the block is forceful and outside of the free-blocking zone.” Given the above information, I do feel this action by the blocker would warrant a blindside block so long as the defender did not see the blocker approaching. Thoughts? Thank you!

    • @WPIALFootballOfficials
      @WPIALFootballOfficials Год назад

      Knowing the rules is great, however, knowing how the apply the rules makes an average officials great. We all strive for consistency and I do not think we could say with 100% certain that the defender did not see it coming especially with the force of the hit in his breastplate. I think it is in our best interest to treat that type of block as legal.

    Thank you for doing these training videos, Brian. Much appreciated even in Nebraska. I will comment on the holding call (play begins at the 10:55 mark). You voiced support for the call. Though our view from the bird's nest video is limited, I wonder if the defender's own momentum caused him to stumble. There was very little initial engagement, I don't see any significant turning of the the defender's shoulders, and he did not go all the way to the ground as I think he would have if illegally grabbed and thrown.. In the reality of the game, that center needs to get the hands of the defender off in order to execute the screen blocking. I feel this flag was unmerited. Curious of others' impressions. No, I am not a former offensive lineman. :)

    At the 22:00 play you’re talking about the RB passing the ball forward to the QB…. Are you saying this is illegal? They are behind the LOS and it is the first pass during the down… by my understanding, legal. Please elaborate

      No that is not what I was saying. The call was the passer was across the LOS when throwing the forward pass which was not the case.

    Out of curiosity, why is the home team wearing white?

    Around 20:13 on your video for that touchdown, you noted another 2/3 seconds went off. Is that still on the Field Judge to check the clock when they are motioning for the TD but in addition to that, they are trying to clear the play and no extra curricular action. Or does it fall on one of the other officials to assist during that play to get that time right? I know you have the side judge to assist you on clearing the play so the right answer is probably to let him clear that why you are watching the clock

      The entire crew is responsible for the clock but the Field Judge is primary. That person should be keeping it on his/her wrist and checking it with the game clock after each play late in the half game. So even if there is cleanup needed with the players, a simple check with the watch and the GC can be made after the players or situation is handled. Even a quick glance to the clock as they are crossing the GL will give you a reference point too prior to cleaning up.
