Hi there!
My name is Christian Fludder, and I am a chiropractor for children, working in Brisbane, Australia.
And I love answering questions.
I've been practicing as a chiropractor for nearly 20 years, working in a children's only practice for nearly 10, as well as being involved in teaching chiropractic paediatrics across Australia. I've had a few papers published in the field of chiropractic paediatrics, but I am always looking to do more!

Time to update some of the information from one of our first episodes on PLAGIOCEPHALY with @AskDrChristian ! That was a long time ago, and so much has come out since then. Why PURPLE CRYING may be MISLEADING! (Not a huge fan!)

So have you heard about PURPLE CRYING? What is PURPLE CRYING? Well, let me just get this off my chest in the clearest way possible: I'm not a fan. I understand that parents can often look for a reason for crying, and this can often be given as a reason, but does it really answer why? Babies cry for a LOT of reasons. So have a watch and tell me what you think. Did you find being told your baby h...

So you know what can be confusing? Getting told your bub has "low tone". But there they are, laying on your chest, holding their head right up. Seems like good tone right? Well, what if this little sign has been misinterpreted? Tone is a bit of a tricky one to determine, but with some of the tests that we do, we can get a pretty good understanding of where your kid is at. Enjoy! REFS: 1. Flanag...

My baby is 7 months and has been on Omeprazole for silent reflux for several months. He still has little chokes with reddening of the face and tears every day, we well as chunky spit up multiple times a day. He also arches his back and has random sort of spastic movements. Is there a point where I should ask my doctor to try something else?
Helloo doctor My daughter 1 year old..... facing this problem in my baby ......😭😭 Please tell solution for this condition.... I can't control my emotions in One year 😞
Is it normal for a 3 year old to have some of these signs without having anxiety?
Hi there! "Normal" can be a really wide spectrum, and even then it can vary day to day. At 3 years old, we might see some of these as a normal action, but its when we see a few, and repeatedly that we start to think "hmmm" Thanks for the comment! Hope all is going well ☺️
Hormone changes from mother to baby.
Can be one possible reason for this - correct! But sometimes, it can also be a reflection of gut health, allergy, or other conditions as well.
I believe this is what’s happening to my son 😢 this is a call for a diet change 😩😭
Oof. Well i dont think i sway that much, but my muscles especially in the legs are always hypertensive. I do get a lot of twitching and spasms, plus the dizziness and nausea. I cant even fully extend or flex my neck due to uppercrossed syndrome, so i can only imagine it would be worse if i could extend the neck further. This explains why i get not only dizzy but also neaseous when i stand up, pretty much every time now. By any chance soes this also cause/ correlate with very cracky/popy joints and an inability to release tension in antagonist muscles?
...I think there may be more going on that a simple persistence of a reflex going on! Time to go get yourself evaluated by a good health care practitioner!
You said do do 😂
😂
What is my options I'm adult 3O I want to do surgery? Hospitals?
I genuinely have no idea for adults. Talk to your GP?
I have a son he is 2 yr old now and his is condition of microcephaly and also have this reflex how can it cure? By medication or by physiotherapy or its a natural cure conditions which can cure by it own?? Plzz help me i am so worried and also visited lots of doctors..
Ah now microcephaly is a description of your son's head size, but not actually the condition itself. You can have viral-induced, drug-induced, and genetics-induced reasons for microcephaly, and each of them would have a different method of managing. To be honest, there is a chance that it could resolve on its own, but there is also a chance it could continue or worsen. Without knowing more about your case I can't really provide more help!
Do you adult guys with plagyocephaly have muscle pain all over the body? It started happing with me around 30 years old?
No - typically plagiocephaly itself is a painless condition, but there may have been some tightness in neck motion when it first started. If your plagiocephaly started at 30 years old I would be going to your GP and getting some scans or further investigations done!!
Hi doc, is there any possible that our skull can be soft to deform? and what it could be cause and its treatment?
Hi there @neutraldude - there sure are conditions that can cause deformation! One is craniotabes; often the result of inadequate vitamin D but can be due to a bunch of different factors. Its very difficult to go into specifics for treatment because there are a wide variety of conditions that may have very different treatment requirements!
My 9month old baby suffering from aczema on her checks and little all her body and her scalp have a dandraff it's no go permanent plz suggest me what can I use foe
My baby is almost 5 months old, she is supposed to be eating 5-6oz each feeding, she always eat only 3oz and take a 15-20 minute break and then maybe finish the feeding after that (takes up to an hour to feed her sometimes) Not sure if she has silent reflex, could be the whole milk formula ??

Hi doctor, my son has turned 3 years now and he has been having constipation issue since last 1 year. We have tried all solutions to solve this. We have increased fibre foods, more water. No help. Family physician has suggested to give him Restrolax for few days. It didn’t help. After seeing this, I think the main cause is cow’s milk. He is very addicted to it. So much that he will drink anytime even if his stomach is full. He is very habituated to drink milk (200 ml) during bedtime and once again in the middle of the night. We have tried so many ways to avoid it but he cries so loudly until we give him the milk. I have tried to reduce the milk quantity by mixing water in it but still not helping with constipation. What can I do?
This is very tricky as milk can be quite addictive! If it is the milk causing the constipation you will need to wean off all dairy, and be dairy free for at least 2 weeks before you will start seeing changes. You can try milk alternatives, or just stop altogether (have fun with that...). On a side, at 3, there is no need for a milk feed in the middle of the night, this is likely pure habit now as well. A good dose of Vitamin D can also assist with any inflammation that may be going on in the gut and help with passing. All the best!
@@AskDrChristian Thanks for the prompt response doctor. I would start giving him a vitamin D supplement. I hope it helps a little at least. Yeah, it is pure habit because he doesn't sleep until we give him. Can we try giving him oat milk just to fool him? I am not sure if that can be given at the nighttime. Also, should we cut down on the yogurt as well? because I thought it helps for constipation.
If the yoghurt is cultured with bacteria, then it may be able to help, but if he is reacting to the dairy, then yes you would need to stop all sources: cheese, chocolates, cream, yoghurt, milk, etc. Even a teaspoon of this may be enough to trigger his reactivity! I personally use oat and my kids do too. The issue with fooling him is that milk can activate the same receptors in our brain that morphine does, so he won't get that same hit without the dairy. You could try mixing and gradually reducing the dairy, but this will take time as well.
Hello Dr. Christian, we have 2 month old baby which has what we think is "silent reflux". It's verry tough since she has a lot of pain and hysterical cries when is a feed time and also disrupted sleep. We tried with siryps but doesnt help.
You may need to look at your diet! It can take 2 weeks for aggravating substances to get out of breastmilk, and then a further 2 weeks to get out of bub!
@@AskDrChristian Thanks for the reply! I forgot to mention that she is on formula, not brest feeding. What can be done in that case ?
Hi there! So in that case you will need to look at the ingredients of the formula. Some formulas may be listed as being "hypoallergenic" or "cow's milk protein free". You may need to change formulas to help, but this is best done with some proper guidance by a health care professional.
@@AskDrChristian thanks for your feedbak we will do so. Wish you the best !
how can you tell if it's due to position or fused sutures? I noticed my baby's forehead on the right was sticking out more. I brought it up at the 1 month appointment and pediatrician said it was likely how my baby was positioned in utero since I noticed the first week. Now that my baby is almost 2 months I have noticed the right side of forehead is still sticking out, the back of the head almost comes to a point. The head is elongated like your last example. Baby prefers to turn head to the right. On the side of the head, left side sticks out further than the right.
Hi there ChuyChuy, So if its fused sutures, it has a very particular feel. I am very fortunate to have seen a couple of these now, and even better I had one parent who was comfortable enough for me to demonstrate them at a seminar I was presenting. Your paediatrician will (hopefully) know the difference between the two. If you would like, send me a few pictures looking at all directions to askdrchristian@gmail.com and I can review. Now, if it is the fused suture, don't panic; most cases they don't do much until around 4-6 months old and bub is a little more developed. If it isn't, I'd advise getting some musculoskeletal work done to see if you can improve things a bit!
I’m 21 years old and my whole life I’ve wondered why my face was so asymmetrical it was like a different face on both sides. I would constantly take pictures of the bad side and never understood why it looked like that. I love the other side of my face but was never able to fully embrace it because I’m so hyper focused on the bad side. Now I finally put the puzzle pieces together and remembered my family talking about how I used to always sleep one side of my face. I wish my parents didn’t try and hide this and would’ve been honest. Now I realize almost all of my insecurities about my face trace back to this. I’m so frustrated and have a list of surgeries I’m thinking off. They’re terribly expensive but I’m adamant because I want to see what I would like if I was more symmetrical. Im tired of feeling ugly. People have always commented that my face is long and skinny but they never realised it’s really all because of that one side that stands out more. I’m afraid the surgeries might change the good side of my face. The main surgery i want to get is a double jaw surgery do you think this can help fix the unevenness and push out the flattened jaw more? I was just ranting sorry but here r my main questions please -does sleeping on one side as a baby also effect the body?? Because I swear I also see an unevenness in the shape of my body where my hip and chest is noticeably flatter -is it true that it effects the nose and makes it more “beaked” like bc one side of my nose looks normal and fits my face meanwhile the other bad side is literally like a beak it protrudes more and my nose is super slanted. -is it also true that it effects the eye because on the bad side my eye appears to be bulging from the side Then of course my whole cheek and jaw is elongated and flat -I too have always noticed that I can turn my head on the good side pretty well but when I try to look over my shoulder on the bad side it’s not as comfortable and I have to shift my body more. I can’t believe all these things that I thought were random all connect back to plagiocephaly. It’s so annoying knowing that it was easily preventable. -does it affect cognitive functioning? Brain/mental health? Tbh I’ve grown up struggling a lot with mental health could this have played a part? My head is so flat on one side that I sometimes wonder if there’s enough room for my brain 😅😭 -as far as neurodevelopment delays is this actually backed up enough? I’m really freaking out with you saying plagiocephaly can affect quality of life all togetehr. I’m freaking out bc I thought this was just a cosmetic issue is this something that can actually have that big of an effect?? Because my family always talked about how as a baby I didn’t smile much or laugh much maybe at times but even looking at videos of me as a baby I had a resting face no matter what was going on around me and would laugh and smile just a bit here and there but always seemed to be in a bad mood lol later on as a toddler I became super fine though emoticons but I have always struggled in school. If you could please direct me to a book or article that goes deeper into this I’d appreciate it Thanks for responding if you do I’m really struggling with this rn lol
Wow now thats a response and a half! I'll do my best to cover what you are asking. 1. "I wish my parents didn’t try and hide this and would’ve been honest." To be fair; they may not have known. A lot of parents get told (rightfully) that most babies grow out of this. The problem is when they don't, but with our current knowledge it is difficult to know which kids will and which kids won't. 2. "The main surgery i want to get is a double jaw surgery do you think this can help fix the unevenness and push out the flattened jaw more?" I have no idea! This falls into the realm of cosmetic surgery, and I am very unfamiliar with what gets done there. 3. "does sleeping on one side as a baby also effect the body?" yes it can; we see this as an association with plagiocephaly, hip issues, and foot issues. If there is a general torque to your body going on, other areas may be involved. 4. "is it true that it effects the nose and makes it more “beaked”" Not sure on this one. I think genetics comes into play a bit more here. 5. "is it also true that it effects the eye" Yes, if it has progressed enough into the face it will affect the orbit and subsequently the eyeball as well. 6. "does it affect cognitive functioning? Brain/mental health? Tbh I’ve grown up struggling a lot with mental health could this have played a part?" Research suggests that it may be ASSOCIATED with cognition issues, but not CAUSE them. It's like saying the bruise on your leg is associated with your discomfort, but it was the bad tackle that caused it. One theory is that because the upper neck is one of the largest sources of stimulation for our developing brain, when it is limited in movement, the stimulation is limited as well. This area needs further investigation to really nut out finer detail. As for articles, have a look at this document. Its a little old now (and due for a refresh), but it contains a good chunk of what you might be looking for. accp.asn.au/Chiropractic-Evidence-Based-Management-of-Deformational-Plagiocephaly Thanks very much for reaching out!
Hi there, my son have plagiocephaly. Can it be possible to back in normal shape? What should I do? Thank you so much in advance
Hi there, It really depends on several other factors. How old is your son? How bad is it? What caused it?

My 8 months old baby has dust allergy in skin can we apply beclomethozone combo quadriderm ointment..my doctor prescribed that but it has side effects too...
Hi @vishwajeethraji, Sorry but I am unfamiliar with this ointment! Dust allergy can be tricky, but you can certainly look to calm the system down - sometimes probiotics or vitamin D can assist with this process. All the best!
My boy is of 5 weeks and his crown of head is up how to settle it
@AskDrChristian my question is if the baby’s right side at 3 months is flat and we want to correct it by repositioning them to always face the left side…wont that transfer the flat side to the left side? Or do we alternate to correct the right side or just keep placing the baby on the left side to correct the right side flatness Really hoping this gets a response 🙏🏽
Hi there! We need to have them being able to face left to be able to round the head shape back out again. Ideally, they will be able to move to both sides, but we need to let the pendulum swing to the other side for a bit to balance the shape back out. The hard part is if you don't correct whatever is causing them to face that one side all the time, no matter how frequently you turn their head, they will just keep bringing it back to their preferred side!
Thank you so much I need this and I think I have it
Hey doctor is there any affordable solution for this as an adult ? Surgeon cost you hell of a fortune , we can't live miserable like this whole life ?? 😌😌🙃🙃🙃
Hi there - and sorry but I have no idea! Over 90% of my patients are kids, so I tend to be up to date with kid stuff, not adults.
Hi Doctor, My 3 month old is suffering from Silent Reflux and the paed said it has turned out to be severe GERD. PPIs did not work on my baby he has following symptoms please suggest what can be done..he is active when not sleeping, and a happy baby otherwise, he is 13 lbs. It hurts to see him in discomfort and restless. 1. He keeps squirming or squealing in sleep and arches his back 2. He swallows the milk coming up in his throat 3. Constantly tries to keep things down my pushing and grunting and making movements and arching back 4. He mostly turns towards his rigt side 5. Feeding issues, he starts ro choke or gag while feeding 6. He is on breastfeeding from his birth, it was a normal delivery 7. He is gassy and his abdomen keeps making sound 8. Has very disturbed sleep, he needs a pacifier and likes to be held and swinged sideways. Only then he sleeps 9. Doctor said it is cause of overfeeding but i have heen seeing his symptoms from early stage 10. uncomfortable lying on flat surface, keeps squirming 11. He drools a lot with bubbles
I do not take any milk since it creates bloating to me, I have limited or stopped any milk products since I am breastfeeding. I eat wheat, rice, dal and sometimes chicken and egg, I drink Alkaline RO Water, taking Calcium and D3 supplement called Vehycal. He drinks milk only for 10-15 mins and thus I feed him every 2-2.5 hours. Nights it becomes 4-5 hours gap.
My 5mo has exact same symptoms
Same here with one month baby
Any solution? I’m facing the same issue
Very interesting. Silent Reflux (or LPR/Laryngo Pharangeal Reflux as its starting to become known as) is a bit of an interesting one. So often it is driven by allergy processes, with cows milk being the #1 trigger. In some kids, a complete cessation of dairy product is needed for at least 2-4 weeks to see any change - because just a single teaspoon of dairy product in your diet can trigger the responses! The next most common reason is coordination or control over the structures involved with swallowing. Musculoskeletally, we find problems in the neck may affect the ability to properly coordinate swallowing. And the real kicker here is the SAME NERVE that is involved with a lot of swallowing activity is involved in keeping stuff in your stomach! Has your bub had any other assessments done?
Hi my son is 2 weeks old and his face and head is full of pimples from one week. You can say acne developed from age of 1 week. I am really worried it became worse fully covered with postule pimples and he is totally on breastfeeding. I am avoiding soap and oils from last 2 days and now he has pimples on his back also from 1 day. Please do suggest what should i do to get rid of this ?
There are so many causes behind skin problems; diet, contact, hormones... If there is a bit of pus inside them it could be an infection, but sometimes it could just be little dots called milia - and these are two very different conditions with two very different managements! Best thing to do is bring your bub to a health professional so they can have a look!
Thank you sir
❤ love your stuff Christian!
Was that a fart logo? 💨

Thank you so much doctor I'm curious though can baby react to chia seeds
Hi Doctor, my daughter is 18months old and I have noticed that the right side of her head is flat as compared to her left side. She’s born 6weeks early and I believe this could have been caused by how I breastfed her during the early days because I didn’t know any better. However, I have consulted two head doctors and they said it’s moderate but now helmets won’t make it any different but I feel like I have let my child down and troubles me every single day. Please do you think something could be done at all? Please answer I know it’s years ago you made this video but I had just come across it. Thank you
Hi there, Sorry about the delayed reply! Firstly, its very unlikely that it was caused by the way you fed her. Most parents feed in the position that is comfortable for their kids, and if she had some difficulty moving her neck, you would have adapted to that, not the other way around. At 18 months, you can still make a difference, but it will just be slower in recovery than if she were 3 months old. With moderate, they are correct in that helmets will make only small changes. I would consider taking her to a musculoskeletal therapist (chiro/osteo/physio - just make sure they have some training in looking after kids). Hope that helps. And one more thing: you have not let them down at all. You are still seeking out ways to help!
My baby is 3 month old he has redness and dryness on his face and also cradel cap its from 4th week and still there what should i do he is on breastfeeding
Hi my baby is six months old, my started developing some small small rashes on the face, what should I do please
Keep a track of the foods that you have introduced, and see if it reoccurs when you give that food again 🙂
My baby has been crying since we arrived from hospital I also was told is normal and that it is purple crying period. i do still feel nervious about itr😢
Hi there - and sorry about the delayed response. When in doubt, listen to what your gut is telling you. Purple crying annoys me a bit as I feel its a bit of a "well... we know its nothing too serious so it can't be too much of a problem lets just give it time". Babies can cry because of discomfort - how was your birthing?
Hi dr, my twins were 25 week preemies and now home 3 months adjusted. My question is one twin is having trouble with his feeds. He starts to choke while feeding and sounds like he gets flem build up and gargling noises. He has good days where we can finish 3oz n other days he starts to choke with every few drops. Wonder if you can help
Hi there - and sorry about the delayed response! Do you find he's worse on one side compared to the other? The congestion can be mucous being produced, but the choking sounds more like a coordination issue - this is something I usually see becoming an issue in babies with musculoskeletal issues. Could be worth getting your bub checked by a musculoskeletal practitioner like chiro, osteo or physio 🙂
My baby is 3weeks plus old now and having acne on her face and they are slowing down later it was spreading all over her body was it a matter to corcern
Hi there - and super sorry about the really delayed response! Likely just neonatal acne or hormonal acne at that age. Keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't flare up and start to look red and angry.
My baby is 2 months old she is having flat head on her right side. She has nothing wrong with her neck movements & can freely move it on both sides. On our last visit to pediatrician he said it will go on its own just do repositioning it is due to baby's preference to sleeping on one side. Will it go on its own? Im not seeing any improvements, im extremely worried! As Drs dont consider it as much of problem if baby is doing well but im afraid n want to fix it before its too late! Kindly guide me? Is there anyway to send you my baby's head pics. Please reply
Hi there @Momeena7777 - very sorry about my incredibly delayed reply. How are things coming along?? This problem can go on its own, but there's a pretty good chance it won't... Personally, I'd get a review with a musculoskeletal therapist and get that range double checked. Babies at 3 months or so have a huge rotation capacity (back over their own shoulders - around 110 degrees!) and even a slight reduction in this may be enough to trigger a response. Where in the world are you located?
Alhumdulilah she is doing quite well! I'm from Pakistan and here unfortunately we don't have the facilities of helmet therapy but repositioning helped a lot. Flatness on the back still persists but my pediatrician made me understand that some head shapes are due to genetics too. There can be many factors to a head shape.Like other features of body nose eyes lips height it's not wise to expect to have all humans perfect round head shape and it has nothing to do with the functioning of the brain so just keep repositioning her head. Thank You so much for replying. I'm lil at ease as it's getting better but still not sure how it will turn out. She will be of 3 months soon. Can you suggest to me what I should do as we don't have helmets n other treatments of it available here. I would be grateful. Stay blessed

Hi doc! I have a beautiful 5 mobth old. When he was born he had two bumps on his face that went away overtime. Now at 5 months last week his face started getting a few more bumps. I realised it spread to his body. Not a lot but just wnough to make me feel a bit concerned. He woukd get a few bumps here and there the past few months but nohing like this. What could it be? He is breastfed and im trying to use the breastmilk on the affected areas
Like little white dots? Red dots?
My baby is 4 months old she has a rash redish all over her body and the face It's not that itchy
I cannot sit still for over 50 seconds and even before those fifty seconds I’m extremely fidgety- I have asd and possibly adhd too and sitting still is a huge task for me, I often catch myself slightly rocking back and fourth and sucking my pinkie. I also have quite intense stims such as violently jolting my head back, biting my fingers, arms, etc. hitting and scratching. I’m a very paranoid and anxious person so I stim to calm myself down, sitting still makes me feel as though I’m going to be stuck in the same space forever and someone’s going to harm me. I’m desperately trying to learn how to sit still because people have told me it’s quite annoying that I can’t and that I’m just attention seeking and it’s a bit upsetting haha.
Can't really understand anything! Why the music
To see who can't filter out the distractions ;) Actually it was more a new video editor issue.

Hi there! Has he had his hearing checked?
Is there any idea on what is consider the amount of time I should stop giving it, to a 10 months baby with reflux, without impacting in their natural ability to grow their own gut good bacteria (and it could have a bad effect on natural production)?
Hi there @Leosuri! This is a common question I get. When we are born, we start building our own bacteria based on what is going in our mouths; initially breastmilk (which is full of bacteria) and then foods (which promote particular bacteria to grow). Taking probiotics is similar to eating fermented foods - it helps to promote good bacterial growth. Problem is when we have the wrong type, or a narrow variety, of bacteria present. If your bub has reflux going on, there could be many causes behind this, but taking a probiotic may be able to help. Once they are on a solids diet, the bacteria can change again, but what we eat will define what will grow, so taking a source of good bacteria may be very beneficial for the long term. The issue with long term use is not that it affects natural production, but you might create an imbalance especially if the wrong type of probiotic is being used. Hope that helps!
Great content, thanks a lot for you video
