It’s funny how the first Team Plasma theme starts strong then it’s just kind of derivative. Only to be outshined in every single way by Neo Team Plasma. That said, despite not liking Sword & Shield the Team Yell theme is a slapper.

Imo Unova is the best one without a question. Its percussion and punching notes go astronomically hard and also has melodies that make you feel things... A culminating journey. Hoenn’s is my second favorite. Those claps go hard. But its remaster is just fine. Shoutouts to BDSP for making the Elite Four sound actually different and not just lower pitched Gym leader theme. And Alola’s Elite Four sounds straight out of Pokémon GO which makes it the most different and unique by far. Paldea’s is almost Unova tier but it is ruined by the little teeny tiny fact that a lot of players couldn’t hear it at all due to the bug repeating the first 5 seconds. Funny, but unfortunate.

The only ones I would call boring are the Johto (HGSS moreso than the OG) and Sinnoh versions. Everything else is peak Imo. HGSS Kanto is awesome awesome awesome. Chaotic but also makes sense. Unova introduced the Last Pokémon Standing version so that Galar’s could run (or chant). And why lie, the Galar Gym Theme is an absolute BOP. I will say: The Sinnoh remake Gym Battle theme is really really good. I’m a fan of explosive orchestra man. And the second part of that theme is great.

Absolute hot take because people are too nostalgic of FRLG but the LGPE version of the Kanto battle theme is peak, the orchestraling of such an iconic theme brings out the best of it. It has attitude and the horns in the song mean it. Hate the game all you want, the music remixes were 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾 The closest we’ll ever get to actual Pokémon live orchestra in a game.

I’ll die in my lonely hill with the Paldea trainer battle theme. And let it be known that the Kanto, Unova and Alola trainer themes are some of my favorites as well. But to me Paldea mixed every instrument that was good from the other 3D games. It uses trumpets right, timpani right, synths right... It absolutely sounds the right amount of competitive. The others steer towards too dangerous, too serious or not serious at all (which is not a bad thing), but the Paldea one is just right. And it’s not even a honeymoon phase kind of thing. I liked it from minute one because just like the Let’s Go P&E one, it sounds like it has attitude. ...Meanwhile I really really hate the Galar one. It’s loud, it’s too trebley and badly mixed, it’s messy and yeah it has the Pokémon main theme but so does the Unova theme sooooo...

All we have for now is his slower, orchestral arrangement of the grunt theme from USUM's Episode RR, which is still super awesome! It also includes brief references to the Rocket Hideout and Encounter themes. - Maxie/Archie: The ORAS version of this theme is such an upgrade from the original. The USUM one is pretty cool too, and I enjoy it for its own reasons, but ORAS's blaring brass combined with creepy electronics and gritty guitar is just pure villainous musical bliss. - Cyrus: For some reason this theme gets me hype no matter which version is playing. The triplets might make it feel a bit less serious at some parts, but I think the arpeggiations and chords used are just killer for a battle of ideals such as this. - N/Ghetsis: While N isn't the true villain of Black and White, I felt like he was worth including here since he was hyped up to be such throughout the whole game. His final battle theme still feels like a confrontation with a major antagonist though! But Ghetsis, brings the true villainy, with choir and timpani alone presenting a truly evil, dark tone. The B2W2 remix takes the theme to a new level with an amped up tempo and guitars, while USUM's version is a pretty direct upscale of the original content. - Lysandre: This theme starts as a remix of the main Team Flare theme at first, but quickly shows it's a unique composition. The rock guitar juxtaposed with orchestral strings and choir really sells his role as an antagonist. - Guzma: It's Soundcloud hip-hop in Pokémon. That's just awesome and hilarious. - Lusamine: The true antagonist of Alola comes with a fittingly menacing piano theme to rival Cynthia's (they even look alike... hmm.) Orchestra and choir once again make this a great battle theme for a villain. - Piers: Piers isn't exactly a bad person, in fact his whole team went against his wishes in their wrongdoings, but he's still the leader of a villainous team, so he gets to be here. Thanks Piers for giving us a killer synth-metal track in a Pokémon game! - Rose: This theme does not fit Rose's vibe at all. Maybe his role as the true villain, but this feels like a Ghetsis, Cyrus, or Lysandre-type piece with it's warping synths and orchestra. This combined with the in-three feeling also kind of makes this feel like a Final Fantasy boss theme or something. - Cassiopeia: Viewing this video will definitely spoil who this is, so once again you've been warned. This theme is right up my alley as an EDM fan and producer, but I would never have expected something like this to end up in a Pokémon game. It sounds like it belongs on Beat Saber or something; it's straight up hardcore club music! - AI Sada/Turo: We have Toby Fox to thank for this masterpiece. It reuses motifs of the Area Zero and Tera Raid Battle themes, a common practice in Fox's music. How this man makes such emotionally impactful music is just astounding. - Volo: This twist villain was already giving Cynthia vibes, but his theme is just a straight up orchestral arrangement of her iconic encounter theme. I think hops theme lacks the serious aspect of a rival battle. Its too happy for him because his goals are to beat his brother therefore he should be more motivated. Not a bad theme in general but i think it doesn't quite fit him

I love how energetic yet emotional the PWT theme is. Starting with what almost sounds like a heartbeat, then it hits you with the insane chorus that perfectly splices together action, emotion, bonds, struggles, triumph, hardship, beat, and tune. In my opinion, this even beats out Iris's champion theme.

When I first heard Penny's theme I really liked it. But now with the context of all themes coming back in on my mind, it feels out of place and wrong. I no longer like it.

Team stars theme didn't have to go as hard as it did

It was wholly apparent to me that Diamond and Pearl remakes were just uninspired cash-grabs, so I refused to either buy them or play them when a friend of mine offered me BrilliantDiamond to try. So I had never listened to the remade OST up until recently, surfing through these compilation videos. I must say I changed my opinion: they're not uninspired cash-grabs. They are pointlees, uninspired and over-priced pieces of shit.

i both love and hate that tower tycoon Palmer's theme is just Cynthia's, i love that its another chance to hear the banger that is the battle music, but they couldn't of made one new track for him.

Honestly just gonna rate this one by number and choosing the best faithful mix out of each one. Keep in mind I'm gonna keep Hisui separate though simply because it's like calling a frenchcore remix of a Mozart piece the same track. It's just not. 1. Sinnoh, perfectly captures the feeling of a trainer battle and is just powerful 2. Hisui, insanely good remix of the Sinnoh theme that is perfect for the game itself, and covers the same beats with new instruments and beats that hit at times even harder than Sinnoh, but I'm giving Sinnoh credit for this cuz it really did steal its whole flow bar for bar 3. Unova, the fact that they incorporate a key Pokemon motif throughout is great, and honestly it's just a bop that fits the region well. 4. Hoenn, this is just a great trainer theme with some good variation and hits every beat a trainer theme should. 5. Johto, because HG/SS goes hard and the trainer theme hits harder when you got those horns blaring and you hit a fade on Joey's lil RATTATA 6. Kanto, yeah yeah I know Kanto goes hard too but I'm a HG/SS fanboy so it's lower here but just know I think both the OG and HG/SS mixes go so hard seriously. 7. Kalos, it feels like it almost hits every beat but it forgets to have a calm moment. Still hits hard when you got those drums kicking and your mega evolved charizard is screwing your opps harder than Oak did Ash's mom 8. Paldea, wonderful that they did the same intro thing that Hisui does, it just elevates the track much more, and they even did a similar thing to Unova with that key Pokemon motif. This track goes super hard, but again it needs a calmer moment to help elevate it because it feels like it stays at 100% the whole time and that can get boring. 9. Alola, it feels almost too calm to be a trainer theme in the first place, but it does actually tell its drums to stop so it gets a +1 for me 10. Galar, I mean it's not a bad motif by any means but my gosh the intro alone might induce a migraine, and it seriously does not tell the drums to stop at all like they just keep going off. It's at 110%, 100% of the time, like slow down, make it simpler, create some calm halfway through to revive the feeling of the track again, don't use the main Pokemon theme in a low stakes battle against a Wooloo, and please add even a hint of intimidation here. Yeah I honestly think Sinnoh perfected the music formula here but hey the other themes aren't bad they're just not SInnoh.

Top 5 here we go I'm not including the first two that snuck in as gym leader themes pretending to be more important than who they were but still kinda being bops 1. Hoenn, honestly the drums on the new mix help elevate that to another level 2. Unova, banger track, fits right in with the whole "it's our job to jump you" thing 3. Sinnoh, I feel like although BD/SP was severely rushed the elite four mix here does enough different to warrant calling it a different theme, and a pretty good one at that too. It'd be like me adding power rock to the Johto elite four, just epic stuff. 4. Kalos, just some good synths and guitar tbh 5. Paldea, although it at times almost seems to switch into a Sinnoh-esque theme with the guitar, I think it does enough right to warrant a spot here As for Alola, it is NOT on the playlist sorry lol even if it fits I mean just no boppage here. Galar is just a worse gym leader theme, I shake in my boots more when I hear the regular gym leader theme intro playing alone because it's just *better.* And again, sorry to all my Gen 1 and 2 homies, but it ain't my fault they didn't bless you with more Battle! themes.

I started with HG/SS so I'm biased, but yeah if I had to name my top 5 1. Johto, and specifically the HG/SS mix because honestly it goes so hard 2. Unova, the introduction of the "last pokemon" theme alongside an already fitting gym theme just hits real good when you get there 3. Paldea, now HEAR ME OUT, this is honestly just a bop no matter how you spin it, and it encapsulates a fun, intimidating environment with a neat "last pokemon" theme at the end that actually ties into the actual gym leader theme like Galar does. However, people have the super valid critique of "where is that chanting coming from there's like four dudes here" and I agree so my headcanon is that there's a legion of invisible Unown surrounding the gyms that sing for each challenger when they do well ig 4. Galar, because even if it is much less of a bop and I would never put it on my playlist this is super hype in game because it fits the atmosphere super well. 5. Hisui, simply a cool remix of an already good gym theme Now before the 2D fans maul me I think the older games are better *games* but my goodness the modern tools and mixes just help the music shine so much better than the crunchy speakers of a DS or Gameboy. That's not to say there aren't amazing themes and music in the older games, like honestly I might even put more of the older game's music in my lists but idk I feel like a lot of it is miss. Also sorry, Kanto is OG but it ain't *that* good, Kalos doesn't seem to go anywhere really with its theme, and honestly Hoenn is kinda mid with the gym theme here. Alola is here too I guess, idk I have no strong feelings on Alola. I just like a good, fun gym leader theme that goes hard and starts out intimidating but gets you motivated and even slaps as it goes on.
