"Susie Lee" - (Uncle Dave Macon) 5 String Banjo
"Susie Lee" by the great (Uncle Dave Macon) was requested by someone on instagram. This was kind of a tough one to emulate as there are no covers ANYWHERE to study at all. So I decided (2-finger C) would do the job and it did it quite well! I'm down-tuned quite a bit here so if anyone wants a lesson on this long forgotten tune let me know in the comments. It's a very fun tune to play because it's fairly simple to do but it also challenges you to utilize the whole fingerboard. Playing this fast isn't necessary as it can get tricky but it definitely makes it more fun. I HIGHLY recommend y'all check out Dave Macon's recording and see how ridiculously fast he plays it. #banjo #folk #bluegrass...

"Shady Grove" - Played On A Custom Built Banjo At The Devils Lake!
Просмотров 5434 месяца назад
As promised here's a deeper look on my newest commission build. And as stated in the title, this indeed the devils lake AKA "Lake Diablo" of Washington's North Cascade Mountains. This is not a natural lake however. In 1930 the Diablo Dam was created at a height of 389 feet making it the tallest dam in the world of it's time. Thus created the reservoir that would later be one of the most beautif...

''Red wing'' - A Pretty Little Native American Folk Song On The Banjo! Also, Adios My Friends!!
Просмотров 9066 месяцев назад
One last video before shipping this banjo out. ''Red Wing'' is an old folk tune I picked up from the TV show HEE-HAH. If anyone's wondering what the title means, it's nothing bad. I'm just leaving the mainlands for a bit to take care of some family and personal business down in Maui-Hawaii. On the other hand if I don't make it back for whatever reason then at least you know where I went. I will...

If the video is too long to sit through you can just watch the lesson if ya want. This is a song lesson and new banjo build combined into one video and I tried to keep it as minimal as I could. The Preacher and the slave is played here in the tuning (C-G-C-E-G) but can be played in standard G or any other down tuned relative tuning. Big Rock Candy Mountain banjo tutorial - (Harry McClintock)
I lost 50 pounds one year. I thought it was because I walked to and from the gym everyday. Now I’m realizing it’s because that’s when I was learning Sam McGhee’s Buck Dancer’s Choice. Guess these are the kinds of things they don’t tell you in gym class. Sounding top notch!
yeah there's a lot we aren't taught that should be taught right lol. thanks though, glad you enjoyed it!
@@kylewood4852 If only us old time/blues musicians controlled the education system. Oh how better a world this place would be...
Beautiful instrument....it's not a banjo...great rendition of a classic
you might say its the great grandfather of all banjos lol
Good stuff thanks
Burnin'! I almost like your version more than Clifton Hicks! Are you switching to 2 finger picking after each verse before you go to the next verse?
At the end I kinda am but between versus I'm still hitting with clawhammer but I'm hitting the 3rd string open, then pulling off the 1st string on 2nd fret followed by hitting the 2nd string open, finishing off with plucking the thumb string. All in that order on repeat.
Mcclintock is that you?!
Being from Knoxville, TN I'm sure Haywire Mac would approve of the cover and the backdrop, as well
Thanks, much love my brother in Christ! I pray you guys on the Eastside are doing alright and hanging on during all this chaos.
@kylewood4852 I'm in East Texas where life is always good, ol buddy...
More tutorials plz
Will do!
To all the Dave Macon enthusiasts, would anybody like a close up lesson to get started playing this tune if I put one together?
Absofknlutely!
Yes bro! Any lesson learned you put out would be appreciated
wow love that style you're attacking that thing! learning from your keep my skillet good n greasy lesson right now, might try this one next
Oh nice I hope thats going well! And thanks man, Stringbean was the first banjo picker I ever watched so I just assumed thats how everyone plays haha
That was awesome! We need to get you a straw hat for the summertime!
Thanks and negative on the straw hat. This cueball head and straw don't get along well ya see lol
Man you’re impressive. The laughing was spot on, just like the record. Keep em coming, Kyle!
Thank you much!
@@kylewood4852 For sure man. Been teaching myself banjo via guitar and am especially trying to grasp/play Macon's material. You've been a fantastic resource.
@@mixmastercj100 Well I'm glad you're getting something out of these vids! Other than Leroy Troy and a few others, there's really not a whole lot of good resources to study Dave's wild picking.
@@kylewood4852 Dude, tell me about it. It's tricky right now cause I've had no problem learning stuff by ear (namely guitar and harmonica) but since it's a new instrument, figuring out the nuts and bolts of UDM has been a real doozy LOL, and there's certain songs of his I REALLY want to play in particular. Is there a particular process you have?
@@mixmastercj100 I wish I had a solid process but since 2017 all I did was keep the banjo by my side and play it every bit of free time I had (even in a coffee stand drive thru lines) until things started to click. I'd say study all the chords you can in standard tuning, Two-finger C tuning and Sawmill tuning then listen to old recordings and try making out the chords and hand placements. To be honest, in the beginning all I did was study David Akmen (Stringbean) a bunch and just get used to swifty chord progression. Lastly you might try singing the song out as it can help you pick it out sometimes. Just curious, what's one of the UDM tunes you'd like to learn?
Ripping!
That was wild 🪕⚡️⚡️⚡️. Uncle Dave is smiling up there in Glory
Thanks man! This one really hits the spot.
It's mostly just the yellow jackets. Other wasps are pretty chill if you don't harass them.
You're telling me man. Them Yellowjackets need some anger management. That or a blunt lol.
@@kylewood4852 when I was a kid, I ran over a nest with the lawn mower, then a few hours later ran over another and they followed me inside. I must have been stung 40+ times. They put my ass in to anaphylactic shock. I thought I was gonna die on the way to the hospital. And (I've confirmed) I'm not even allergic to them. I'm cool with every other bee or wasp, but fuck a yellow jacket. Like your channel. Take care.
Thank you for posting this, been wanting to learn this song.
Loved that banjo and the performance. My Dad’s favorite song to sing while doing chores (he worked 6 days a week up to 10 hrs a day as a delivery driver to keep us all housed & fed). So I learned the “how can I work” stanza as: “how can I work/like other folk do?/well how can I work/when the sky is so blue?” Made sense in San Diego CA. Thanks for the post & for the memories moments!
This one is so nice, can’t wait to see Tyler and play it myself. Miss you friend.
Thanks!
❤❤❤❤
Don't get me wrong. The banjo is beautiful and he can play it. It's the name of the video
Or as I watch more , a " what I can play video"
This is a look at what I made video
Since no one else is entertaining you, I'll respond. You alright cuz? You seem to be stuck on repeat.
How is this a " build" video
Killer version of Shady Grove brother
Thanks Kenny!
dude could you play the devil went down to georgia i think you'd make a mighty fine cover
Perhaps maybe. Not really my vibe but I guess I could try.
I started watching you for the banjo. But you speak so powerfully about Christ and i love hearing you speak about your beliefs.
Thanks Charlie Brown! Too be honest, I've never been raised in The Faith Of Christ ever. Wasn't until 8 years ago I started having a hunger for God's Word. Better late than never I guess? From one bald man to another God Bless You!
That song almost makes me cry
It's a vibe for sure!
Fkn nailed it!
Da fk... He sings it just like it sounds in the original recording... I swear I could hear the "Pops and white noise" from the record lol Great performance, and I see Big Rock Candy Mountain is next... Thought I was the only one in the world with that on their playlist
Thank you much!
@@kylewood4852 Great taste in music man
Sounding great as always!
Thanks man!
That’s some fine craftsmanship, Kyle! Someday I’ll be your customer.
Thank you much! And yeah, whenever's clever!!
Really nice banjo! Looks and sounds great! Shady Grove sounds fantastic! I have lost trust in government and most every institution over the past several years. Putting faith in God sounds like a great idea to me. Jesus is Lord!
Be kool to see the kitties in future videos!
Hallelujah, Amen! I'll definitely get the little ones on here soon, thanks Dan!
God bless Kyle!
🙏
amazing playing and damn that's a beautiful spot, I wanna jump in that lake
Thanks Ben and yes it is! Lake Diablo is the name if you ever find yourself in WA
Beautiful, just a wonderful performance as always
