Independent testing tells the TRUTH about cardboard house sheathing!
Are ThermoPly, Dryline TSX and other brands of cellulose sheathing as strong as they claim? I discovered this document from the APA that discusses the independent test results from them and TWO universities revealing surprising details about buildling your house with cardboard!

A regular day in the life of an inspector - project for HS students
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.14 дней назад
This was originally created as a request from a real estate agent who wanted to throw my name into the basket of real estate professionals submitting "day in the life" videos to be shown to high school students. It was a fun assignment and I really enjoyed putting it together!

Builder said it was ready for inspection...

They gave me the date to come out to do the buyer's inspection of this beautiful new home so one would have expected it to be ready, right? Wrong. Good thing the buyer was diligent enough to have their inspector come out to take a look!

I don't like having a project manager because they usually confuse "coordinating the trades and doing quality control" with "micro managing and bossing around people". But apparently some workers do need special supervision... Shame on the builder and even worst, shame on the trades.
I am certain that the the drawings do not match what is shown , no engineer or architect would design that .. not sure how it passed a framing inspection! A large portion of the roof load where different roof lines tie together is in supported and the birds mouth should rest on a top plate or beam and make contact with at least 3 inches of bearing …. What a joke
The 2x10 is cantilevered in more than the 2/1 required. The 1x4 is a furring to make the roof plane in. The roof is probably not going anywhere in the next 40+ years. But yea best practice would be to make the stem wall the proper height to begin with and continue it at least to the valley intersection. 🤓
Uh, yeah, canitlevering that valley was a stupid attempt at a cover-up of shoddy work
Stop allowing Paisas to work on Construction sites!
Builders will use *anything* that makes it to the site. No quality control on materials whatever. SMH
Not good. It should be reported. People could be killed.
Not a framer here and i know that's wrong. Sorry, i mean, that ain't right.
Owl pellet? You knew right away. Thought someone sneezed their chew out.
Lotta hacks out there that’s why we have inspections! 20years in the truss industry I have see some shit 💩
Holy crap man. That is horrible. As a tradesman and business owner, I wish people knew how these modern homes are built. They are worth less than a home from the 70's in my opinion.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
Well that is the new craftsman work the government wants.
Makes me appreciate my patched up house from 1950 more.
This is what happens when people with no experience or proper training become project managers/supervisors/foreman.
That’s dangerous
I can guess what the crew looked like.
Not an expert but, but this does not look good, and I hate the design anyway. Anyone can see that it's not good to bore large holes thru a stud. The builders put 2 & 3 studs together to compensate for this, but as the video shows, the inspector was not accepting this. I guess the obvious solution is that drain pipe runs should be in basements or crawl spaces.
I'm actually getting scared to build a house here when I see all this insane unsave builds!
Horrible That beam on top is just sheered off. By the looks of it, it was a proper piece of wood. It moved an inch after sheering off in the direction of the beam itself, so compressive force How much force do you have to apply to accomplish that??? Thats got to be 10 tons or more. How on earth do you build so crooked that this force can come into play there??? You cant solve that with a repair, bc it means the entire build is wrong.
I dont really understand building houses from wood. Im from NL/Europe and all houses here are built from brick. I dont really know why, but i suspect because of our wet weather and wind, wood is not very durable in these conditions. Of course we can build with wood and i guess if you look back far enough, you wil find some wood, but even historically, its all brick/stone. We do use wood for floors, although thats also less and less so. And since those walls are double, inside wall and outside, the wooden beams that span for the floor, rest on the inside brick wall. All forces go down through that wall. (and that wall is connected for structural strength to the outside wall. Thats more expensive than wood building, but heck if its your home, you want it to last at least your lifetime, right? I cant imagine building a house with sheathing of hardboard. Thats crazy. Anything will penetrate that. It has very low structural strength. And it would be rotting away here in decades, if not just years. We dont even use that for a shed in the garden. Its doable for the backside of a cubbard. Nothing more. Why do people accept this???? Also, its pretty easy to build with brick. Once you have a good foundation, bricklaying is quite easy. You dont have all those joints that you have in woodbuilding. The material is also consistent in strength; doesnt weather or change much and in fact only gets stronger in time, while wood loses strength in time. Stone/brick also doesnt do much in temp and humidity changes, while wood, all sorts, change as temp and humidity change. It 'works', as we say and you have to allow for that. Which means building with wood is far more complex than building with stone or brick. All those joints is a nightmare. Its not like we dont know how to build with wood. We build sheds with it at times. Some architect may decide he wants to do something nice with wood, but generally houses are built with brick. Is it customary to build with wood, or is it that much cheaper? I can hardly imagine that. Cement and brick is pretty cheap. Ive been in the US 3 times. Saw the wood build, but.... i dont get why you would do that. I mean, if you build a brick wall, you can see from a mile away if its decent or not. If its wood, you have to check each and every joint ffs. Each joint thats not right, means the wall can fail. Each piece of wood thats not right, means the wall can fail. And then cover it up with hardboard, some tape and dry wall on the inside.... Thats a nightmare. I still dont get it. Hardboard? I thought that stuff was isolation and there would be a stone wall in front of it? Are you really saying this hardboard stuff IS the outside wall? So they slap on some stuc or what have you, for looks and thats it???
Friday afternoon special😅
“Vamanos amigos!”
“Yeah but my framing crew is fast bro!” Anyone care to guess the geographical location of the crew? Call me whatever you want but North American framers usually pay attention to this stuff because it’s their reputation on the line. The “others” care not about attention to detail because they’re paid under the table and just pop pop pop the framing guns and move on to the next job.
Somebody is going to have a boo-boo face when the post-frame inspection happens.
You sir have just saved countless lives!
Well thay should have built the pony wall the right hight and have a lvl beam underneath it where the load bering wall stops
Rafters should have continued down the wall into the attic with plywood on them so that the vally could be created on top of the plywood with a 2x10 laying flat as a nailer and the jack rafters then cut on compound angle heel cut to match the pitch of the other roofline.
We have known about this since 1853 when The Three Little Pigs was published.
That aint right
That's a fail
You get what you pay for 😂 👍
It would help if people didn't build such goofy weird looking houses. It looks like a Picasso painting or a house you would see in the Dr Seuss book. However anybody willing to use a piece of OSB paneling that doesn't even make it to the end of the trust needs to be Jack slapped. I see all this and say to myself no wonder storms destroy house is so easily.
That’s pretty terrible work. Are these people actually qualified carpenters?
Was this inspection performed before of after the building inspector was able to perform their inspection?
Take it out take it out take it out take it out you'll be held liable
I couldn't do this job. I'd walk on site, see chip board and write, "Tear it down and start over". That would be my report.
The more I see these crappy houses the more I want to just have my next house built out of cinder blocks and rebar. Or some variation of steel and stone like they do in Europe. This nailed together wood is no bueno
Wtf 😳
Wow. Aren't they supposed to use professionals to build homes?
I built my home in 2021, and used 15/32 CDX plywood for the sheathing. Is plywood never used in the south?
Creativity on whole another level! My issue, as an Architect working in the EU, is how is it possible in the USA to have a new building design approved without submitting a proper structural draft, accompanied by proper static calculation? How can such a large building be raised without a plan and proper instruction for the carpenters? Where's the construction site responsible and which type of qualification is required? I'm appalled!
Yo no gusta.
Framer since 80s here. This is why I always tell my guys/subs-"Build the house from the roof down" Not literally, but always look over entire plan, elevations included and they would have seen that needed to be a taller wall. They didn't catch until they started putting roof on and jerry rigged it instead of fixing correctly. I call them rookie school drop outs.
I have questions about like 4 things in this video. it's like a car accident that you can't stop watching. Stop illegal immigration!
There’s no lateral stability in how that’s constructed. A good wind is gonna collapse that roof someday. It’s not just bizarre it’s dangerous.
Honest question - how do builders just ignore things that are not code compliant? Is it because the city inspectors didn’t call it out so they “passed”?
American serial construction 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
