...what else?
Hi! This is a little mockup of a sort of audio/video art combo i've been trying out for a while now. Really like these weird computery visuals. I've really been wanting to make this stupid piano album for ages now but I just can't get the piano how I want it to sound. There are lots of really great melodies and chords in this thing though but it's still early days. Hopefully I'll find it within me to make some creative strides soon, I would love for it to be done by christmas but at this rate who knows. This was kind of fun to put together though. I have indeed returned to this specific song again, as again life has reminded me and people I love of its' impermanence. What else can I reall...

Hi! I stumbled upon another fun tuning, this time its in sawmill tuning (fDGCD) but a capo on the first fret. Sounds really cool, and again a little idea quickly arrived. I'm beginning to think any tuning outside of double C is giving me bursts of creativity!! :) If I have enough of these I'll try to record them all more properly and make some kind of album or collection out of them, that would...

Hello again! I recently stumbled upon a really fun tuning (g A# G A# D) on the banjo and some cool ideas came out of that, this being one of them. Could probably have gotten a better take of this but I'm happy enough with it as is, it gets the point across anyway. Have a good one :)

I went on Snapchat this morning and saw an old clip from three years ago of me playing a rough version of this song. I always really liked it but never got a good video of me playing it properly to put on here. Always got really unlucky and would record it several times over and each time I'd forget to either record video or audio or sometimes both. I figured that Snapchat memory was a sign tha...

Hi again, it's been a minute! I've been keeping my banjo fingers fresh but something about recording a banjo tune in a city apartment just didn't feel right. It has to be played in the countryside (preferably a porch but today was too windy for my microphone), and now that I'm back in the woods for the summer, the time is right! I've been listening to a lot of Adam Hurt recently (again), specif...

It hurts just as much to live it as it does to watch someone close be in that terrifying space; the lead-up to losing someone they've loved enough to build their days around. To know that they're asking themselves where all that love will go, now that it can't arrive where it used to. I have no good answer to that question, because I think in that moment no answer is good enough. It just has to...

Hi guys! I've moved and am officially settled in since a good while. I've been having a lot of fun with music lately, just making fun little melodies and songs without really feeling any pressure from it for the first time in a long time. Been singing a bit as well, not because it sounds great but because it FEELS great :) Might put some of that on here if I feel just a bit braver! Anyway, this...

Hi! Here is another very dark video (colorwise), I really tried to get ahead of it this time but the sun just managed to sneak away in time. Oh well. This is a song I randomly stumbled upon a couple of months ago. I really love how moody it is, the original recording of it is pretty old so it sounds all crackley and wobbly, it's great. Do listen to it, if you haven't already, and take care :)

Hello everyone, and happy new year!! I'm making the most out of my banjo during the month I have left in my house before I move to an apartment as I suspect the neighbours aren't as fond of loud clawhammer banjo playing as I am :) I decided to try to tackle this song today, but I am slowly coming to terms with the fact that I might not be good enough to play it yet. This is by no means a perfec...

This arrangement as a real good finger stretcher, not sure I did it justice but I gave it a good go! Really love this song, only found it a couple months ago when I stumbled upon Chet Baker's cover of it. This version of it is done by the legendary Kenny Burrell. I would never be able to transcribe it by ear, luckily someone else is and that someone is Francois Leduc. His channel is amazing and...

I'm getting into a bad habit of posting grainy, dark videos. On the other hand, we are in the actual dead of winter here in the north, so it is constantly dark and grainy! So not entirely my fault :) Here is a short and simple arrangement of a new christmas song that I actually enjoy a lot. Hope you like it, and that you all are doing well with whatever you got going on :)

@@stephensmith9756 thank you very much!! :)
What strings do you use here? I've got myself a minstrel fretless and I'm running that with nylguts now, so I want to change up my other banjo to do more melodic style stuff like this, and I'm torn on what strings to use as I've no real experience with steel, always used nylgut. Currently torn between steel and nylon, but may just try both and see which I prefer. Yours has a nice crisp sound that works for this style that I can't really get with the nylguts I currently use.
@@solenum1 interesting, I would really like to try nylguts as well (and fretless, love it!!). Unsure what I had here but either daddario phosphor bronze 11s or ghs phosphor bronze 11s, definitely prefer the ghs strings so thats what i would recommend.
@@tgp4871 Thanks for the response! I never thought to try strings like that to be honest, probably because I've not played any other instrument so I've not stumbled across them. I think you'd enjoy the nylguts to be honest, tuned up they're real mellow and smooth, I recommend the aquila 1B's if you ever try them out. They take a day or so to settle but they aren't as fragile as people say, they stretch really well you just need to tune them up gradually if you want to hit your usual open g level tuning, just need to watch out for sharp burrs on your tailpiece, bridge etc.
Beautiful
@@BANJOBLUES thank you very much!!
Ive never heard anyone play the banjo like you do. Its a completely serene and vibrant soundscape. It envokes feelings in me that are deep, but not heavy. Its been nice to see your face in more videos (: Please keep sharing and I'll keep coming back. Thanks for the inspiration 🩷
Wow, what kind words of you to say, Danielle. I have to say I've been struggling with doubts about my abilities as a musician for as long as I have been playing and making songs, but hearing things like this actually help so much in trying to understand that there is some value in trying to create. Thank you very much for your comment, I so appreciate your kindness. Also, likewise!! You're an incredible artist yourself :)
@@tgp4871 Your sounds deeply emote and are so moving. You seem like a really special person and your uniqueness and originality really comes through in your music ☺️ I come back often to listen and feel part of that. Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing that struggle. I can completely relate. I've always had crippling anxiety around my music, I feel like I'm always chasing the dragon of the few times my music had paused my restless mind. My anxiety has rarely made me feel good enough, and all the progress feels so gradual that it can feel like swimming through mud - so seeing the growth can be hard. I gave up for many years and started playing again 2 years ago. I still only play every so often... I feel like if I played more I'd be a lot better. But at least I'm playing again 🥺 There must be some sort of lesson in all the challenging feelings we navigate. I hope that you're gentle with yourself and your journey leads you to a place that you can clearly see and feel how beautiful your music is 🌸 Thanks for letting me rant in this little box in your comment section 🫶🏼
@@danielle.rebelle I relate to all of that. It's a shame that basically all fundamentally human things have turned competitive. Feels like all this stuff that we are supposed to just do and experience together, like dancing or singing or drawing or playing instruments or writing or whatever else, has gone from being something that is as natural to us as eating or sleeping to another part of life where you need to constantly show receipts that you're progressing and that you somehow stand out from the rest in some unique way. Under those incredibly stressful circumstances, creating anything you love is just impossible. It's this societal shift where literally every single corner of your life, from your hobbies to your work to your relationships to your financial situation and all the rest needs to be optimized and constantly improving. Of course all this takes work, way too much of it actually. Creativity is supposed to be a refuge from all that but with the above line of thinking it's just another pressure point. I really had to try to give up that idea that I was supposed to sound a certain way and practice relentlessly to stick out. Trying to prove something everytime you pick up an instrument becomes such an absolute chore, it's awful and runs contrary to everything I think music and whatever other creative avenues there are is all about. Practicing to learn something new and getting better can be fun and exciting, but when it feels mandatory to proving you're worthy of calling yourself a musician it's absolutely wrong in every way. I think in those moments it's probably better to actively resist trying to improve until the thinking and feeling on it changes. Just picking up a banjo and strumming it a little while clearing your mind and listening to the birds is enough. Feeling the instrument, listening to the sounds it makes and carrying the weight of it is all enough. There is absolutely nothing to prove, it's just an illusion, a stupid idea that ruins everything fun about music. All of this is stuff I'm still trying to learn again and again, it's really hard to make it stick, but it helps hearing from other people who feel the same way. Thank you again for your kind words, I can only compliment you and your playing the same way. I'm happy that you picked up the banjo again, and hope to see you keep at it. I might have countered your rant with an even longer one here, you'll have to excuse me :) Take care!!
@@tgp4871Awe, you're a real one! I can appreciate everything you have to say about this, it's insightful. Colonial mentality runs deep. I'm unlearning, deconstructing and undoing, to rebecome myself. Remembering my purpose has been a journey. You're right, it feels like so much work just to make things feel easy. I feel like I put myself through mental bootcamp to try to be the best person I can be, and be the best at everything, but all I want to do is just be. Affirmations are important - thanks for sharing some of yours. I tell myself that I don't owe anyone anything. I don't owe anyone prettiness, perfection, self-mastery, masking, agreeableness... I remind myself that I don't exist in this world to put on a show for others - I'm here to express, not impress 🌻 Thanks in return for your kind words, they mean a lot! I actually picked up the banjo for the first time 2 years ago - and that's what inspired me to play again. I think all my videos except my latest 2 are from my first year of playing 🪕 I only played 🎸 before. My RUclips moniker is also my FB and Insta pages, no pressure of course, but reach out if you felt inclined to be connected✌🏼 Take it easy, have a lush night! 😌🌱

Oh, that's awesome, I love it! It kind of reminds me of when I've tuned to open-G but then tuned the fifth string down a half to F# to play sparkly dissonant stuff in A, D, or E major. Except your tuning is a lot prettier, at least the way you play it! Keep on experimentin'! 😁
Thank you very much, Stanley!! That sounds really fun, I will definitely try this out 😊 you keep on experimenting as well, checked out ur channel and its sounding stellar!! Subscribed :)

@@tonytommyblue7114 Hi! Thank you for reaching out, I really appreciate it :) Normally it would be fine but this arrangement I'm playing is actually from another artist on youtube called Jelle Snelders. Awesome. I love it, i hope to be able to play as good as you. I just got a banjo, my girlfriend is from Colombia and hasn't heard it before so i am sending her songs and she says the bajo sounds like the farm. So this fits well with you in front of a barn haha. Very beautiful song 🥲
Thank you so much, buddy, so happy you liked it! Banjo is so much fun, congratulations on your purchase 😊 i agree with your girlfriend it DOES sound like the farm!!
You've probably already answered this elsewhere but - whats your recording setup like?
Don't think so actually!! For acoustic stuff like this it's as basic as it gets: I use my Zoom H6 with the X/Y head on, place it at about the 12th fret (if it's a guitar) and fairly close, then adjust the input so when I play really loud it doesnt clip. That's it, then I take it into the computer and do some minor adjustments like normalising and a little EQ. This guitar gets a little bassy so I usually have to cut some of that out.
@@tgp4871 Oh that's a good idea, I've tried recording with a pretty decent dynamic and condenser mic in my office but I've never been happy with the quality, usually need to bump the gain a lot to get anything good out of it and then I run into a lot of clipping and stuff, and what I really hate is that for banjo you can usually hear my hand rubbing against the pot head/skin more than you can hear the actual notes, which doesn't seem to represent what I hear with my own ears irl. The portable mic looks like a great option and I could start recording outside of the office. Thanks!
Love it! Love the gorgeous background too. <3
Thank you so much! I love the background as well, its a really pretty garden in the summer :)
